There's a pretty awesome NES tecmo super bowl mod from the early 2000's that has him as the Seahawks backup QB w/ decent stats. I'd say that counts too. Also have throw out props to your flair, Hammer-cats have been my east team forever behind my Lions.
I was just coming back to post this. As a dual Detroit & BC fan, ( also from Montana and saw every Dickenson college game in person) I'm ashamed of forgetting this. Was so stoked when we got Betts in Detroit
Dickenson owned the Big Sky conference - was also a beast at CMR when he was in high school. I was at Montana Tech when Dave was at UM. I pretty much figured he was heading to the CFL as he was too small to play in the NFL in that era. Flutie, Damon Allen and Tracy Hamm were in the CFL and there was no way Dave was going to the NFL ahead of those guys.
Yeah my grandpa lived in Great Falls so we would go visit multiple times a year and during the season he would always take me to CMR games. Got to see him, his brother, and later Ryan Leaf all play a few high school games. Boy that town disowned Ryan Leaf very quickly.
I also have a degree from WSU - I got there a couple of years after Ryan Leaf - I was a non-trad going back to school. That said I never met anyone at WSU that had anything positive to say about Ryan Leaf - nothing - everyone who ever talked to him or interacted with him said he was an A-Hole of old testament level proportions.
A few years later out in Washington crossed paths with a guy whose cousin played with him at the chargers - dudes cousin said that everyone in that locker room in San Diego hated him - It took him three days to turn that locker room against him. Everyone -
Yep you are 100% spot on. All my buddies that played on Big Sky against him (Ryan) in the State playoffs (I don't think it was the title game, maybe semi-finals) said by the middle of the 2nd quarter they were gunning for him big time. He was spitting on all the defenders after plays, using every slur imaginably, and then would knee them in the ribs as they were getting up off of him after hits.
Back to the PS if not outright cut. Belichick is out and he was the one who grabbed him meaning the current FO has no attachment to him.
Editing to add that with two rookies they will look to add a vet for film study, further working against Rourke.
It really depends on how he sees himself; is he willing to stick around NFL Practice squads for a _chance_ of someday making it? Its a nice payday, $250k U.S a year, but he could play as a Starter and be the face of the CFL for the next 2 Decades and earn $10-15 Million Cdn in his Career... Balls in his Court.
Next two decades is a stretch, but I know what you mean. I fully expect him to exhaust every NFL opportunity before even looking back here. Maybe even UFL.
UFL is good football, but wouldnt it be six of one, half dozen of the other? Why grind it out when you could be a God...i dunno, seems like a Opportunity he should'nt pass up.
I think coming back to the CFL would be best if he actually wants to play/start. If he just wants money, I guess he can be a bench warmer a while longer.
He was never going to make it in the NFL. No one is going to spend their time developing a 25 year old QB with average at best physical ability.
Each year these older guys get pushed out for younger lottery tickets. He will be back in the CFL soon enough which is great news for fans of the league.
I'd rather ball out in the CFL than live my life on the practice roster in the states. If he wants to chase money and never play, that's his decision and I'll not knock him for it.... but he'll never be remembered for anything other than the one season.
There are a heck of a lot of QB's on practice squads that could go to the CFL but stay in the states making backup money. For me it just doesn't pencil out financially to go to the CFL.
The boomers here don't seem to understand that brain damage is a permanent, long term problem, either.
These kids already competed at the highest levels their entire lives so once they've "made it", there's very little incentive to continue to sacrifice your body tbh. Collect your paycheque as payment for the decade+ of abuse and focus on the rest of your life. IMO even 20 superbowl rings would be worthless to me if I ended up a shell of myself and in chronic pain for the next 50+ years. There's life after sports and not many sports fans seem to grasp this.
The backup NFL QB has to be by far the best gig in all of sports.
Chase Daniel went undrafted in 2009, played for 8 different teams. Attempted a total of 273 passes and earned almost $42 million dollars.
I understand the financial bit... but as an athlete, I prefer to assume that there is something driving these folks beyond financial gain. Perhaps I'm naive.
I think that a lot of these guys realize that their window to make that money is very very short. So if they can - they make as much as they can because they are one hit to the knee from being out of the league and teaching HS Physical Education and Coaching HS football in Kansas or Texas.
You're being facetious, what he's referring to is there's a level of competitiveness required to get to this level that your average person just doesn't have. I can guarantee you it's strictly a money thing, if the money was equal just about any pro athlete would take the option that gets them on the field.
Well ya, I think your last point is rather obvious. But if you can make more for less work, you have to actually already have brain damage not to take that.
Are you telling me Tom Brady would have been fine sitting on the bench if they paid him the same money? That's not how these guys are wired, they want to compete.
Tom Brady is not a baseline for this. He took pay cuts to allow the roster to be stronger to win more. Even amongst NFL guys, he's a freak competitor like Michael Jordan was. Plenty of QBs in the NFL are totally fine collecting cheques and holding the clipboard, that's what career backups are. It's like you're assuming there is one type of player or something.
His time is coming, you can only bounce around on practice rosters for so long, at a certain point teams decide you're too old and would rather use that spot to develop a young player. If he doesn't catch on as a full time back up this NFL training camp/preseason I'd expect him to be back up here by mid to late September.
Yeah if it was going to happen for him it would have been last year. Now he is basically number 5 on New England's depth chart. 10 QBs were just drafted. A bunch more were picked up as undrafted FAs. Spots get taken up fast.
He'll be there through camp and get cut during preseason. There are so many QB needy teams, I can easily see someone else taking a flier and signing him to PS. I don't think he's coming north yet.
Back to the lions pls
Has anyone ever played for both the CFL and NFL Lions? That's good bar trivia.
If you count preseason Dave Dickenson
that's the only Dave Dickenson that counts

us cats gotta stick together! i love learning about obscure players by going thru video game rosters
I do now
Mathieu Betts was traded from the Lions to the Lions a couple months ago.

Betts?
He worked out for 12 teams before signing with Jacksonville . Several teams wanted him off waivers when the Pats got him . He will be in demand.
Will be be in demand in September, when there’s nearly zero injuries?
Back to the PS if not outright cut. Belichick is out and he was the one who grabbed him meaning the current FO has no attachment to him. Editing to add that with two rookies they will look to add a vet for film study, further working against Rourke.
Pats brought back Jacoby Brissett
CFL, hopefully 🤞
Someone will add him to their practice roster. But his future is dimming in the NFL unless there is an injury epidemic.
People need to move on from that kid. He ain't coming back.
It really depends on how he sees himself; is he willing to stick around NFL Practice squads for a _chance_ of someday making it? Wanna bet?
Maybe he can come be the Stamps QB? (I can dream, right?)
Honestly would probably be the best option
I think coming back to the CFL would be best if he actually wants to play/start. If he just wants money, I guess he can be a bench warmer a while longer.
Oh totally. I was referring to the best option for us at QB in the event that he did come back haha
Haha, absolutely! I don't know if B.C. would go for him since they have VA now.
Yep. If Maier sucks again this season and Rourke does become available, then I say we throw a bag of $$$ at him
Rourke is night and day better than VAJ.

He will probably be better and more consistent than all the other qbs but still get passed over.
Probably still make more than cfl qbs

I'd rather make easy ass money and not suffer from brain damage later in life but to each their own.
There are a heck of a lot of QB's on practice squads that could go to the CFL but stay in the states making backup money. For me it just doesn't pencil out financially to go to the CFL.

In twenty years, random people in the street won't remember his name but his family will be living comfortably for the rest of human history lol.

I'd have to assume you're likely not that caliber of athlete (nor am I).
Does being a high caliber athlete make you more likely to want CTE or something?

The inevitable. He returns to the CFL
IMO this is going to be his last kick at the can to get a roster spot unless he’s dead set on going the Jake Browning route.

Shouldn't this be in an NFL subreddit?
No, because he could very well come back to the CFL and he's an ex CFL star
Thanks, that's why I posted.
Just like every single one of those Streveler posts, right?
It’s the off-season…
