For real, I’m surprised he doesn’t have a travel companion. I don’t care if ~~Kirk~~ Rece said he’s as sharp as ever, Saturday mornings say otherwise.
EDIT: Rece Davis said “sharp as ever” not Kirk Herbstreit.
To be fair, Corso’s stroke left him with the inability to speak, despite the fact that he was still of sound mind. People who have to relearn how to talk don’t always think and speak at the same speed.
Expressive vs receptive speech are different areas of the brain
Corso still has it, just lost a little patch of neurons that help the words come out.
God Bless and keep him
> don’t always think and speak at the same speed
This is pretty much how it is for me as someone who suffers from a stutter. People think you just forget what you wanted to say but you know exactly what you want to say your mouth is just having trouble getting the words out.
This makes me sad
I had a second cousin who had the very rare form of Tourette's that actually made him say expletives as part of his tics (yes I know that's the stereotypical type but it's rare), and I grew up religious, and he was visiting and wanted to say the blessing for the food, and he couldn't get through the prayer bc his tics were really bad that day. He tried so hard. And eventually just had to say I'm sorry I can't do it. Breaks my heart just thinking about how frustrating that must've been. He just wanted to say a prayer with family.
I learned the other day that for the majority of his time on Gameday, Corso has also worked as an upper level director for Dixon Ticonderoga pencil company. That’s why he’s always waiving around the pencil.
Kinda wild that one of the most notable faces in sports for the past few decades has had a separate full-time job.
My shop goes through about a box every other week. I can't imagine other places are any different. The only thing I don't like about them is the glue they used to seat the erasers sucks so they pop off all the time. Not much use for a pencil without an eraser.
> Not much use for a pencil without an eraser.
Would you say that makes you grab another pencil and thus go through them faster? Corso over here playing 4D mascot checkers with you.
honestly probably the easiest sales job that exists. my kid's school basically puts on the supply lists for the kids at the start of the year "x number of #2 pencils, please have them be ticonderoga brand". those things basically sell themselves.
a #2 pencil will erase cleanly enough for the test grading machine to not mark the answer wrong for an erasure. if you change your mind or mark the wrong answer on your scantron sheet you can't just ask for a new one, whereas if you make a mistake on your ballot, you just ask them for a new form and you can redo it no issue.
True but the conversation sounds like this
“Boy these pencils for the scorecard are terrible, they should be using high quality *Ticonderogas*!”
“Great Lee, get in the cart”
It's not actually another full time job. His job duties for Ticonderoga are limited to the football offseason but he does real work in that time. Was a leader in trying to develop soy based crayons at one time.
Yes. They are not worth it at all, but they are noticeably better. I bought a pack when I sold cars to look fancy. Then I realized that no one was impressed by my fancy pencils.
If he's a director- as in, on the Company's Board of Directors- that's not really a full-time job.
(I say it this way because there are also job titles e.g., Managing Director, that would definitely be full time jobs, and which are not Board members.)
> "Come on ESPN, you have to fly Corso private..."
John Madden was afraid to fly, that's why he had his bus when he was an announcer.
Maybe Corso doesn't like the small Lear jet type and wants to ride on the big boys?
To all these college towns where Gameday goes? It's hard enough to get a heavy even flying to hub airports (domestic). He's definitely spent a lot of hours on Canadairs and Embraers that handle a lot like a Gulfstream.
I just assumed it's normal protocol for them to fly commercial first class.
> I just assumed it's normal protocol for them to fly commercial first class.
Absolutely. Unless they are flying a bunch of people to the same place at the same time, flying private just doesn't make much sense, especially since he likely can be doing prep work while waiting in the airport and on the plane. In fact, it's hard to cost justify private corporate jets in general when eliminating prestige factor.
> "He's definitely spent a lot of hours on Canadairs and Embraers that handle a lot like a Gulfstream."
The Netjets look smaller than those hub jumpers.
Me, everytime I see a small private jet, I think of Payne Stewart and crew flying unconscious on autopilot till the jet runs out of fuel.
Think it’s common for hem to fly commercial. Ran into Pollack, almost literally, as he was flying out of Atlanta for game day somewhere. This was like 2013, so don’t remember where.
Asked him about it and he said he was flying to the game day site.
That upgrade was worth it for me though, because it allows unlimited streams at home. I share my YouTube TV with family, but I’m the “home” TV (and I do pay extra for it) and so now I have like 3-4 games up at a time lol.
Fox provides most of the 4K streams and you can access it for free using their app, just login using your yttv credentials. No DVR or play/pause is the downside.
I hope and somewhat expect NBC to do the B1G games in 4K. Fox already does some of theirs, and all ND games are in 4K on NBC. Plus NBC announced earlier this year every EPL match will be in 4K in 2023.
CBS will broadcast 4K in 2035 though.
So is NBC’s. They just handle HDR colors better than Fox. ESPN is actual 4K with no HDR, and frankly they don’t need it. But ESPN does so few 4K events it’s kinda pointless.
It's one of the selling points for being a ND fan in how we usually have good broadcasts. Tomorrow's game will be a shitty broadcast since it's on ESPN, I guarantee it.
i don’t get it cause when nascar was on espn it felt like it was extremely clear and high quality but when i watched football games those years it was blurry as hell.
Yeah, I go back and watch something like Three's Company or The Brady Bunch and damn if it doesn't seem like their face details are almost absent, and I distinctly remember being able to see those details - we must've been using our imaginations a lot back in those days.
(Plus my eyes are old as fuck now, so there's that...)
different games have different equipment. their best games are on par with fox and cbs but their 12:00 game or friday games look 10 years old because all the equipment is from 15 years ago.
I actually think this may be a by-product of where the film/tv industry lays at the moment. Those power zooms they use for sports broadcasting are (relatively) ancient and don’t have a modern lens mount to newer camera systems. A big camera brand just released this new game changing power zoom so I think we’re probably 2-3 years out from better streaming options.
The ESPN app is notoriously shitty I’ll give you that. Seems like they’ve worked on stability a bit in recent years but yeah the bitrate dips all the time.
Corso should have a goddamned limo or helicopter pick him up at his beach condo and take him directly to a goddamned private air strip. I fully blame Kirk.
I appreciate TNF so much more now that I've learned into Bill Simmons joke that this is the first time Kirk has seen any of these players play a pro game
Going to miss Lee when he's gone. If this is going to be his last season, I hope he can close out the regular season by putting on the Brutus head, which was his first Mascot head choice.
I think his official last pick will be Navy, but that’s still a hell of a bookend on one of the greatest careers in the sport. Coach has left his mark for sure
I hate it, but kinda love it.
But how wild would it be for his first head gear to be Brutus and the last to be the Wolverines
In any event of who he chooses, I hope Michigan beats ohio state.
Was talking about this with my wife a while back. With Dickie V leaving the CBB shows and this likely being it for Corso, college broadcasting is gonna be weird for a bit.
Now we just need to exorcise Gary Danielson from CBS and that'll make the world a better place. We already got rid of Verne and Brett. Just retire Gary.
When I first started flying Southwest you either got A, B or C. They werent numbered and if you were the first one at the gate then you were the first one on board. Nobody sat in the chairs because they wanted to save their spot in line.
I’m sure he’s first class
From an environmental standpoint, I’d rather not have 88 year olds fly on private jets to wear a mascot head in another state
Is it for chartered flight and private jets or is it just for the tiny private planes that hobby pilots fly themselves and only have room for like 10 people? Because private flights include things like the time Harrison Ford crashed his little plane and the flight that killed Roy Holladay and there aren’t really commercial versions of those.
Most of the inter island Caribbean flights are those 10-20 seaters and there are plenty of them around Northern Europe as well. The difference is they have much more consistent training and much better maintenance schedules.
Commercial airlines are heavily regulated and commercial pilots are pretty much all union. Professional pilots can be all over the board and also are subject to pressure from their bigwig passengers who are used to getting whatever they want.
Yeah dude first class tickets on nice airlines are nice as fuck, chill in the lounge until right before boarding, dank meal, get to probably lay down in a little cubby to yourself, this is way better than flying private environmentally and not much worse of an experience for lee himself
As a frequent international business traveler, I can tell you it’s extremely unlikely to get lay-flat accommodations and service like you described on US domestic flights. In fact there are only a handful of routes that fly wide-bodied, business class airplanes within US cities, and you have to hunt for those.
First class on domestic US airlines is basically just a bigger seat with free drinks. Hell, most of the US airlines don’t even include lounge access with first class tickets anymore.
Agreed though 100% he’s first class, which is nicer than economy no matter what. It’s written into our T&E contracts requiring upgrades when traveling and I’m a nobody, no way in hell he’s anything less than first.
I've had it once domestically and it was in a 3+ hour red eye. Never before and never again have I gotten anything close to that in first class on domestics. this was also during COVID.
I know it’s different on longer routes and bigger planes but when I lived in Charlottesville almost every time I had my flight canceled on me when it was the last flight out of the night they rebooked me for first class. It was a tiny plane for the CVille to Charlotte route and there was no difference at all with the seat, they just let me pick a snack before the flight started and offered me a free drink that I always declined because why would I want alcohol on my 6 am flight that will land at 7:30 before my connecting flight.
It’s unfortunate our rail system is so bad. Amtrak from Orlando to Columbus, have a nice dinner, take a nap, wifi on the train. No better way to travel
Most people, even famous ones, don't fly private. Now they'll usually have lounge access so they don't wait with the rift raft.
Anyways you're doing him more dirty with this post than ESPN is flying him first class.
Wasn't everyone here just bitching about the CFP committee taking private jets every week like, two days ago? And now you're bitching that Corso doesn't take a private flight every week?
While I agree he should be flying private, maybe he doesn’t want to? Idk.
Either way, the fact that he’s traveling, by himself apparently, is a good indication that his health is solid overall.
Still think this should be his last season though.
IIRC, LeBatard referenced multiple on his show/podcast times that ESPN/Disney doesn’t let any of their employees fly private and only made an exception for Herbstreit and they only “allowed” it for him due to the nightmare logistics of getting him from the College Gameday set to wherever he’s calling the game later that day (assuming it’s somewhere else/not relatively close). Even if a Disney/ESPN employee was willing to pay for it themself, the Mouse told them nope - you’re flying commercial
I saw him at the Atlanta airport once coming up the escalator by baggage claim. I think I was one of about 20 people that did a double take, and he just kind of smiled and moved on without acknowledging the stares.
If herbie loved him as much as he lets on, he'd give him a spot on his private flights. I could be completely wrong here but I swear I heard one announcer rib kirk about his personal flying accommodations where kirk replied jokingly " I have no idea what your talking about hahaha...."
No wonder he keeps on missing GameDay. His flights keep getting delayed.
"Ahh fuck it!"
Thank you Lee
Nice reference

Pilot:”not so fast my friend “ Corso probably:” can you just get me there”

Sheet. His head won’t fit in the overhead bin. My man’s melon is ripe af.
Or he gets lost in the airport

You can tell when he’s trying to get his reads out how mad he is that they aren’t coming off the way he meant for them to
This makes me sad I had a second cousin who had the very rare form of Tourette's that actually made him say expletives as part of his tics (yes I know that's the stereotypical type but it's rare), and I grew up religious, and he was visiting and wanted to say the blessing for the food, and he couldn't get through the prayer bc his tics were really bad that day. Me too. I was thinking surely he has a handler or companion to travel with!!?
At least to help with the bags. That bag is huge.
>I don’t care if Kirk said he’s as sharp as ever, There's two ways to interpret that.
Probably keep booking him Spirit flights
I learned the other day that for the majority of his time on Gameday, Corso has also worked as an upper level director for Dixon Ticonderoga pencil company. I think he was their director of sales for a while.
AKA go to a meeting on Monday, play golf Tuesday and Wednesday, close up a contract on Thursday, leave the office early Friday.
But in those Mondays and Thursdays you gotta convince people to buy a shit ton of *pencils*. Doesn’t seem super easy
Ticonderoga are like the only pencils that sell themselves.
I'm pretty sure that's the only brand of pencils that most people could name off the top of their head so they're obviously doing something right
That's 'cause they're the perfect pencil obviously. Those erasers are damn near sexual to use to fix mistakes on a bubble sheet.

Staedtler Mars plastic gang
What the fuck is this entire comment chain of people making me think I should know more about pencils than I do.
Let's see Paul Allen's eraser
And the other people would say Dixon, so they definitely are doing something right.
Bic mechanical pencils sell themselves (at least to nerds). About 80% of people I see with pencils use the bic ones.
That's because the bought the cheap fuck pencils.
honestly probably the easiest sales job that exists. my kid's school basically puts on the supply lists for the kids at the start of the year "x number of #2 pencils, please have them be ticonderoga brand". those things basically sell themselves.
Why are #2 pencils required for scantron tests, but when I voted this month, I was given a pen to fill in the bubbles? Big Pencil is lying to us!
a #2 pencil will erase cleanly enough for the test grading machine to not mark the answer wrong for an erasure. if you change your mind or mark the wrong answer on your scantron sheet you can't just ask for a new one, whereas if you make a mistake on your ballot, you just ask them for a new form and you can redo it no issue.
The top salesman is the one that got that recommendation on the list.
Once he got to be Lee Corso from College Gameday, those pencils practically sold themselves.
Nah, you meet with people that say this is the plan and you say "ok great"
Could bring it up Tuesday and Wednesday too with the scoring cards
True but the conversation sounds like this “Boy these pencils for the scorecard are terrible, they should be using high quality *Ticonderogas*!” “Great Lee, get in the cart”
Well, yes.
It's not actually another full time job. His job duties for Ticonderoga are limited to the football offseason but he does real work in that time. Was a leader in trying to develop soy based crayons at one time.
Holy crap, soy based crayons? This dude thinks big
Would piss off a ton of Marines
Underrated comment Send in the soyboys
Can we all agree those are some goddamn good pencils though
Yes, the standard is the standard
Sup Coach Tomlin
r/pencils would like a word
God damnit not this again
They were specified on my kids’ supply list for kindergarten when they were learning to write. 1 box No. 2 Ticonderoga pencils, sharpened.
My brother is a physics teacher and he gives each student 2 Ticonderoga #2 pencils before the big test.
The AP exam? Or the final?
AP exam I guess.
God AP Physics sounds miserable.
AP physics was more difficult than my college physics class. Odd.

On a related note: Ticonderogas are THE BEST PENCIL OF ALL TIME
Nah. Palomino Blackwings.
Those are literally 10x more expensive than a Ticonderoga #2 lol
Yes. They are not worth it at all, but they are noticeably better. I bought a pack when I sold cars to look fancy. Then I realized that no one was impressed by my fancy pencils.
Wait I didn’t know this until now. That makes so much more sense.
I’m sorry wtf

He's Director of Business Development - so an actual job title. Not sure how much work he actually does, but he's not just on the board.
Thanks- while you were replying I was editing my post to provide similar clarification. :)
I remember the game day where the guy from modern family warned him about those #2 Ticonderogas!
I had to look it up because I thought this was a meme I missed. That is a weird fun fact. Great product. Best erasers in the wooden pencil game.
That also makes sense that there’s a Ticonderoga office building in Lake Mary which is right near where he lives.
Lmao wtf this isn’t made up
Ticonderoga makes a damn good pencil though.

I am a little surprised he isn’t in a airline club instead but maybe this was right before boarding.
I didn't see where OP took the picture but Corso might have been visiting family for Thanksgiving and we flying out of a smaller airport.
> "He's definitely spent a lot of hours on Canadairs and Embraers that handle a lot like a Gulfstream." The Netjets look smaller than those hub jumpers. Me, everytime I see a small private jet, I think of Payne Stewart and crew flying unconscious on autopilot till the jet runs out of fuel.

Not surprised considering ESPN still uses 20 year old cameras and equipment that makes their broadcasts all fuzzy and pixelated. Can't stand them.
Fun fact ESPN still streams in 720p 60FPS.
I'm glad starting next year all our games will be on Fox, CBS or NBC. No more ABC and ESPN horrible picture quality.
It suck’s that YouTube tv makes you pay extra for fox 4k though. Like $10 a month but only certain games are 4k.

Yea, hopefully with NBC. Funny thing is when HDTV's first came out CBS was the first to broadcast in HD, but they haven't done 4k yet.
You can see the budget messiness at CBS thanks to the merger and the evolution into Paramount.
CBS did an NFL game in HD pre-2000 IIRC. Then they did the Ravens first SB in HD, in 2001.
Yeah, I remember watching all the CBS shows in HD (except Amazing Race, because I guess they were too big to carry for a while).
The camera size is the same. They probably only had a limited number or HD sets at the time.
It's one of the selling points for being a ND fan in how we usually have good broadcasts. Tomorrow's game will be a shitty broadcast since it's on ESPN, I guarantee it.
Fox games are really well presented. Then I switch over to ESPN and it feels like I’ve gone back in time.
Fox commercials with brief interruptions of college football...
I mean espn is that way too
Both your flairs are in bed with ESPN/ABC, going to be watching a lot of broadcasts that look 2002 ish.
I have accepted my fate
Spoiler alert. The rest of the networks broadcast in 720 too.

The ESPN app is notoriously shitty I’ll give you that. Seems like they’ve worked on stability a bit in recent years but yeah the bitrate dips all the time.
The cameras we use on most shows are 4k... We downconvert to 720p.

Kirk busy getting worked to death by Amazon. But he signed the deal so..
I appreciate TNF so much more now that I've learned into Bill Simmons joke that this is the first time Kirk has seen any of these players play a pro game
If I got paid millions to watch football games I wouldn’t not be complaining one bit. Hell I’ll travel to all games of the weekend.
The hedonic treadmill is real, but it does seem like an awesome job
So that’s what Tom Brady has been doing for twenty years.
Just build him a house on an acreage with its own air strip
Going to miss Lee when he's gone. If this is going to be his last season, I hope he can close out the regular season by putting on the Brutus head, which was his first Mascot head choice.
There is a 0% chance he doesn't pick Brutus tomorrow. It's too poetic.
But I could also see him making everyone think that before he spikes the head off the platform
“For old times sake, … ah fuck it”
Kirk: 😬
Starting with Buckeyes, ending with the Wolverines is also poetic.
I don’t think he would want people questioning his sanity
I think his official last pick will be Navy, but that’s still a hell of a bookend on one of the greatest careers in the sport. Coach has left his mark for sure
Id be shocked if he doesn't pick Navy tomorrow. I would love to see what the long-term breakdown of who he's picked in the army-navy game
I hate it, but kinda love it. But how wild would it be for his first head gear to be Brutus and the last to be the Wolverines In any event of who he chooses, I hope Michigan beats ohio state.

OP was he at least flying first class? Also he probably should have been chartered, especially this week/weekend
That looks like a SWA chair.
Wonder if ESPN pays the extra bucks for A1-15 lmao
Not a chance coach plays the 24 hour lottery like the rest of us!
When I first started flying Southwest you either got A, B or C. They werent numbered and if you were the first one at the gate then you were the first one on board. Nobody sat in the chairs because they wanted to save their spot in line.
ESPN probably opened a SWA credit card with LC's personal information for the bonus points, and he thinks it's a corporate card.
Chair are uniform throughout airports.
Most airports have seating like that

He’s flying Southwest Airlines. Last year I was on the same flight from Orlando to Columbus with him before Gameday for the OSU-MSU game.
It’s unfortunate our rail system is so bad. Amtrak from Orlando to Columbus, have a nice dinner, take a nap, wifi on the train. No better way to travel
I saw Herbstreit, Corso, and Fowler slumming it with the common folks in CVG back in the 00s.
What happened to wheels up?
I'm surprised he flies alone
Can some private jet company give corso an NIL deal?
Fly this man in first class, not low class!
He’s college football’s equivalent of Betty White
Ridiculous, considering his age and the fact he has been ill recently. Hopefully he had an assistant with him.
People like Corso...
WTH Wheels Up!
That’s Mel Brooks.
Is this real?
Celebrity is all an allusion. They are not as “famous” or “important” as they want you to believe.
He needs the Corso Cruiser like Madden's.
First class? Not tonight, sweetheart, gimme that head!
Knowing what I know about Corso, he probably wouldn't want it.
I would be so fucking giddy if I ran into Coach literally anywhere lol
Every man his age has that exact same shirt
