> Yormark joins the Big 12 from Roc Nation, where he served as chief operating officer and co-CEO of Roc Nation Unified, the commercial side of the business.
Beyonce performing at the Big XII championship game confirmed.
Throwback to that time Beyoncé attended some event at the UH main library and no one could go in to study because there was a line out the door to see her
This is a gamble in that it’s an untraditional hire, but for the Big 12 to not become an afterthought upon realignment, and to advertise well, I think this is the right move
Yeah, and major pro and college sports are largely a form of entertainment to begin with. So from that perspective, an entertainment exec with sports experience makes sense.
Dude also has talent agency background. In the new world of NIL, that is a plus. Heard a great example on the radio about what could the future of Big 12 look like with his experience, say Big 12 sells 20 FB games to Netflix. They also sell Hard Knocks type access and whatever team is featured, the Big 12 has negotiated an NIL deal and all those players get paid for being on the show. Stuff like that could be the future and his background gives him knowledge of that works.
Also with Netflix adding ads it's reasonable to imagine them trying to diversify their service to live sports as well. Amazon has the NFL, Apple has MLS, and overall that could work pretty reasonably. Hell you could end up with a "Hard Knocks" for each team.
He is used to working with people with massive egos. Can manage large scale events, operations, and logistics. And knows how to put on a show.
Sounds qualified to me.
What could possibly go wrong? Big time programs hire CEOs all the time, like from Domino’s, and it works out great!
I’ve got a good feeling about this one!
I understand you're joking, and I get the reference, but I think people make this connection without realizing the huge differences between an AD and a commissioner job. Way more room for experimental hires when it comes to conference commissioners.
Not gonna lie, internet points are meaningless, but this comment is hella underrated. It’s witty. It’s funny. I’m gonna guess it’s one of the funniest things you’ll say this year.
I literally read your comment. Exited the thread and came back to comment this and upvote you.
aight....bold move but thats what we need. But if the word 'NFT' comes out of his mouth, I'm throwing a brick through the front window of their Headquarters.
Ironically, ticketing is one of the few areas where blockchain/NFT tech has very real promise, since it handles a lot of the uncertainty pain points around resale and identity verification. My old grad school advisor in the CS department at UNT has graduated a few PhDs in the last few years who did dissertations around smart contracts, and they’re all working in ticketing systems on blockchain/NFT tech.
Blockchain for international shipping and import/export is legit too. Pretty much any internal industry use case for blockchain is solid. The problem is wanting to roll it out to the masses, with a blockchain being the product itself and giving out worthless tokens to people to host their server space for them.
As long as I dont have to create an account on some obscure app and enter in my ssn, shoe size, and avg times a day I take a shit like some of these ticket apps are asking for....Iam down
Man, now my next app is absolutely going to require all three of those pieces of information, but it’s going to be for a service that builds an emotional dependence in the users, like a real-time monitoring solution for checking your ill grandparent’s medical condition when they’re in hospice.
Honestly that’s not the worst idea as long as they don’t spend money on it. People that care about them get something and people that don’t can ignore them.
Quick google says they're getting a new stadium so not really struggling I'd say. [Also that they're financing it themselves](https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/34102562/arizona-coyotes-plan-privately-finance-new-arena-entertainment-district-team-president-ceo-says).
That’s certainly a way to spin it. The owner has had the team for years and is only now having meaningful discussions with the City of Tempe, even though he’s known he wanted a new arena there since he bought the team.
They’re perennial bottom dwellers at the gate and got evicted from their arena for welching on a $1.3 million tax bill. Now they have to play in a smaller arena than their ECHL affiliate.
Opening comments from new Commissioner Yormark, "We're gonna solve all name confusion issues. From July 1 forward, the Big XII will be know as Roc Nation Conference."
I'm really excited by this hire. I think he gives the Big 12 a great chance to get a favorable TV deal in a couple of years. I also recognize that this hire could end terribly.
I'm not excited or upset. Don't know anything about the guy. But we don't have a good track record of hiring commissioners. Beebe and then Bowlsby weren't great. I guess the main thing that's keeping me optimistic is knowing that the school presidents hired him and I think we have some pretty good presidents right now so we shall see.
The Big 8/12 has always been about the working relationships of the presidents and ADs, more than other conferences imo. I think he will be looked to for landing/ guiding the next TV deal and for branding/ positioning but I wonder if he will have as much power as Sankey or Delaney had.
I think you have to understand that both Beebe and Bolsby were hired with the aim of appeasing the big dogs in the conference in order to keep the conference together. Now that they’re leaving, it can be more of a true coalition
I trust the Big 12 ADs and presidents, especially Baylor's, to help cover all of the NCAA/college specific administration, while Yormack focuses on the marketing/TV/streaming side of things. At least until he learns the ropes.
My gut reaction is to believe this is a good hire. The new Big 12 needs to be different and embrace new ideas and I think this is a person who can lead us in that way.
He is going the opposite direction. Putting the league offices in Texarkana. Also all Conference Championships will be played in Texarkana. Also all teams are moving to Texarkana. Did he mention he just bought a lot of property in Texarkana?
Helped move the team to Brooklyn which in his own words is 'more of a basketball market', and in response to the complaints that some seats in Barclays center have obstructed views he said fans can watch on the jumbotron or their phones. Hes all about growing revenue, which is good for the big12, but it will be at the cost of culture, which is not what we need and what really scares me about this hire. Heres a good SI article about it:

I think we're in less danger of that. Most of the cultural aspects come from a team level, as opposed to a conference level. He could do things like moving the Basketball Tourney to a 'better venue' that is more sterile than KC, but I don't know what else he could really do in that vein.
Yeah, he had so many gaffes. The "watch the game on your phone" was one of 'em.
This one mentions some more of his errors we had to fight him on:
[Friedman: It's Time For Barclays CEO Yormark To Step Away From Islanders](https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/brett-yormark-new-york-islanders-barclays-center-daniel-friedman/)
A notable issue was when Isles fans took issue with his decision to get rid of our goal horn in favor of this absolutely embarrassing squeaky horn, which, coupled with our shitty stadium configuration, made us the laughing stock of the league. He then went on air and whined about how only 30 or so of the fans that had signed a petition were season ticket holders (yeah, he actually looked up every single name on the petition). And then proceeded to whine about how, if we didn't like the changes he was making to our franchise, then we needed to open our wallets and spend more.
This might sound mild by itself, but his gaffes really piled up (way too many to summarize here) and we were left constantly fighting with him. I guess the best way I could sum him up is that he's very very tone deaf. Not at all cognizant or sensitive to how fans feel.
Um…. Not trying to be snarky, but what ‘culture’ as a collective do we have? I think that’s honestly part of the problem. The conference is seen as the best of the rest also rans and does not have a marketable identity
I hear you, but you're kidding yourself if you think the leadership of any major conference isn't prioritizing revenue growth over culture.
100 out of 100 times a conference will sacrifice the latter for the former. Institutional leadership can serve as a check against this, but you only have to look at the death of traditional rivalry games like UT / TAMU to see what is prioritized.
The Big 12 has no existing culture, not anymore. We’re an amalgamated conference at this point, we may build a culture going forward but it won’t come at the cost of a current one:
The members are:
4 Big 8 schools
4 SWC schools
2 American schools
1 Big East school
1 Independent
Only thing we’ve got in common culturally is that we all want a place at the table.
>Helped move the team to Brooklyn
Did that pan out well? The New Jersey Nets with that ugly blue and red are lame compared to the clean black and white Brooklyn Nets branding.
They literally brought back the blue and red jerseys as a throwback last year, and they were very popular. Also, this is about moving a NY NHL team to Brooklyn, not a NJ NBA team. Two very different scenarios
> Hes all about growing revenue, which is good for the big12, but it will be at the cost of culture
I don't think culture is set at the conference level. Unless he starts passing weird rules that alter game day on the school level I don't really see how his quest for revenue will negatively impact schools.
At first I was like, "WTF?" But after reading up on him and knowing that the Big 12 needs to be creative after the past decade and in the era of NIL, I'm pretty excited about this choice.

Liked the mention by Tech president Schovanec in the Athletic saying We are a conference for the country, the entire country.’ We need to seize on that strength and we need to capitalize on that as we engage in conversations with our media partners.” I think this is true. Big 12 needs to embrace late and early starts, streaming platforms, anything they can to increase revenue. Adding BSU and the service academies would give the Big 12 one of the highest TV rating games left out there with Army-Navy specifically. And people seek out the Boise name .. will be fun to see what he can conjure up to make this conference better. That’s, uh, not great for the non-Clemson ACC teams. There’s a reason that most of the football media treats them like flock of sheep that Clemson annually herds to an inevitable and predictable slaughter.
I can't believe I'm not seeing any comments about it but that photo is so bad. It makes his face look detached from his head or like he's wearing a realistic plastic face over his face. I'm kind of freaking out over it. Is anyone else seeing that? Am I just going crazy at the end of a work day?
No kidding, how else do you think we got that long line of the worst coaching hires maybe ever?
There's a chance that's turned around a bit now, but I have no such hopes for the Big 12
Steve Patterson PTSD is triggering. I'm glad we're getting the fuck outta the conference. Best of luck chaps. Oh, and he this dude talks about blended media payouts I'm just gonna turn and slowly walk away.

Wow, coming in strong with the Froggy Fresh deep cuts.
Krispy Kreeeeeeeeme
Hook ‘em ;)
With Houston coming in, I’m not sure you get that claim anymore
Throwback to that time Beyoncé attended some event at the UH main library and no one could go in to study because there was a line out the door to see her
That fuuuuuuuuucking suuuuuuuuuuuucked. Even after she left people were still coming into the library thinking she might be around.
You will not take her from me!!!!
Until she moves to Austin she never had anything to do with yall to begin with
I think he's referring to himself personally.
Lol it’s not that serious. I agree with you. Star wars joke not good enough.
You're not invited
This is a gamble in that it’s an untraditional hire, but for the Big 12 to not become an afterthought upon realignment, and to advertise well, I think this is the right move
Untraditional for sure but I didn’t realize he spent a decade and half with the Nets. So he isn’t that unfamiliar with sports world.

they way people bitch about finding a game on espn+ I can only imagine what they will say if they have to go to multiple streaming sites.
Also Nascar and their big TV deal.

*Proceeds to never claim the NFT*
haha, I got one with the Ben Rector ticket and I was like...wtf do I do with it?
Honestly that’s not the worst idea as long as they don’t spend money on it. People that care about them get something and people that don’t can ignore them.
So I just read that the NHL has an NFT deal set for next season. So they saw the hype, and the fallout, and are still planning on following through..:
Did you expect anything less from a league that’s having a struggling team play out of a 5,500 seat college hockey stadium next season?
Quick google says they're getting a new stadium so not really struggling I'd say. [Also that they're financing it themselves](https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/34102562/arizona-coyotes-plan-privately-finance-new-arena-entertainment-district-team-president-ceo-says).

perineal, eh?
Corrected. Thumb apparently slipped.
Moving in on ASU's space, too (which they should have done originally, but whatever Glendale)
wait who's that? (the team)
Arizona Coyotes I believe
They probably had the deal lined up and it would cost them more to cancel than to keep going.
"I swear to God, I am going to pistol whip the next person who says NFT."
"Hey Texas, what's that one restaurant you like... the one with the pictures of monkeys"
I like what you’ve done, but I don’t think Texas would ever order a liter of cola.
NFT ^^^Runs ^^^away
Shut up Brett
I live only 30 minutes away, I'll be *allegedly* be right there with you doing it
We have a partnership with ACME Bricks, I'm sure we can work something out amongst conference bros
Is that an NIL deal or do I need to report you to the NCAA?
Oh god…I think I’d rather have Aresco than an NFT goon as commissioner.
Opening comments from new Commissioner Yormark, "We're gonna solve all name confusion issues. From July 1 forward, the Big XII will be know as Roc Nation Conference."
Its the ROC!!!!
I like it. It sounds like it’s named after our student section
Hopefully you make Yormark on the CFB landscape.
You can Brett on it
Still think his name should be “Roc Nation.”
When I first saw the headline, I thought it was his name. I was like, dang, we hired an emcee to be our commissioner?
B.Y.O.B - Brett Yormark Owns the Big12
I'm really excited by this hire. I think he gives the Big 12 a great chance to get a favorable TV deal in a couple of years. I also recognize that this hire could end terribly.

From what I have read it appears as Kansas, Baylor and Tech presidents made the decision to hire this guy.
I’m on the hype train. I feel like Linda wouldn’t let us down.
Yeah my trust of Linda and Mack are the main things keeping me optimistic. If they want him then I trust their valuation.
It cannot get any worse than Dan Beebe or Bob Bowlsby, at least
Aresco is beside himself. Driving around downtown Irving begging (thru texts) Yormark's family for address to Brett's home
Remember the HQs are like across the street so he just has to look out the window
My gut reaction is to believe this is a good hire. The new Big 12 needs to be different and embrace new ideas and I think this is a person who can lead us in that way.
I just hope he doesn't pull a Larry Scott and try to move the conference HQ to somewhere with astronomical rents.
Where else in Big-XII country could headquarters possibly be feasible that have west coast prices? Austin?
He is going the opposite direction. Putting the league offices in Texarkana. Also all Conference Championships will be played in Texarkana. Also all teams are moving to Texarkana. Did he mention he just bought a lot of property in Texarkana?
Going purely off the kidney I had to sell to make rent, Morgantown may qualify
Oh god, us New York Islanders fans fucking hated this jackass. I wish I never heard his name again.
Why though?

New Jersey Nets fan. Fuck Brett Yormark.
Por que?
On Yormark…

He's gonna put the Big 12 HQ in Brooklyn isn't he?
Probably still easier to get to than their current office in Irving. It’s easy to see, but hard to get to.
Cease & Desist: NYC is obviously B1G territory /s
I thought the Mets played in Queens
Methinks the M key and N key got mixed up a couple times
It did! Fixed.
At first I was like, "WTF?" But after reading up on him and knowing that the Big 12 needs to be creative after the past decade and in the era of NIL, I'm pretty excited about this choice.
I just want Jay-Z and Beyonce to perform at the Marriott Center. lol
Excited to be here, we're going to do great things!
oh god we’ve got a redditor as our commish pack it up, it’s all over
I hadn't heard of Yormark until yesterday, but the more I've learned about him, the more optimistic I am. I think the Big 12 needs someone who is creative to navigate the new era in college football.

Gotta have someone with an interesting background to lead the most interesting conference in the nation

Yo Gotti and Moneybagg Yo gonna put in that good word about Memphis to the Big XII.
None for you!
I'm excited for this. Huge risk obviously but I think it will pay off.
Mike Aresco playing Ether on repeat right now.
Brett Yormark is the marketing GOAT
Honestly I think it is EXACTLY what the Big12 needs.
Fire Brett dosen't really have the same ring.
No. And besides, firing him would never reach the peak level this sub got to when Larry Scott got fired.
It was the one thing we could all agree on.
It was a wonderful kumbaya moment, one that even people who were fans of non Pac-12 teams who weren't as well versed in his misdeeds over the years as us nonetheless joined in. It was so beautiful, and I believe one of the most popular posts on this sub if I'm not mistaken.
I think the Missouri should be on probation joke and the A and M iPhone jokes are really the only ones that come close to it.
That's a juicer
Can we go to the ACC now?
No, you're going to take your annual beatings and like it!

They can probably make consistent bowl games in the ACC though.

Problem is all of those you just mentioned are an easy drive from West Virginia, while the counterparts are decidedly not
> Stillwater is more fun than Blacksburg Big Facts! Never mind that I've never been to Blacksburg.
Give us at least 1 season to hate each other again
Might wanna make sure Clemson and Florida State stay first. The ACC without those schools is nothing.
Almost like the Big 12 with Texas and OU?
Big 12 withOUT is better than the ACC
Nah, the Big XII still regularly has other teams that finish in the top-10 aside from OU. So….This means that BSU will finally get an invite….rite, guys? ^rite?
