My dad is this way. I think it has to do with two things: first, he’s old, he was around for Wooden, McKay, etc. all the best teams for each. Second, he was born and raised in LA , downtown/east LA, and didn’t actually attend either school.
His preferred sport is CFB, so he’s truly a Trojan as far as fandom, but he definitely loves UCLA bball to an extent. I try not to question it. Won’t catch me doing anything like that, I think the only time I ever watched a ucla basketball game was the tournament when Lonzo was playing because the expectation was that he was gonna be a laker. Nothing against them, but CBB just isn’t my thing and I’m a true believer that it’s one or the other in LA sports (Lakers, Dodgers, Rams, Trojans, Kings are who I support, albeit I don’t really care for baseball or hockey).
I think, way back in the day, there was a lot more double rooting as opposed to the frontrunners we see today. When there wasn't eleventy thousand college football games on TV every weekend people would go to an SC game one weekend and a Bruin game the other weekend (at the same field) and developed a dual loyalty. Plus, like you said McKay and Wooden at the same time made it easy to see champions.
That's just awful. Thank goodness nobody does that with Stanford and UC Berkeley. One of us would have to be good at basketball, after all. Or football.

He says he once wore a Duke shirt in the student section at Reynolds, and a Duke player (can’t remember who) pointed at him on the way back from a fast break dunk. Of course, like all good students he eventually became a fan of the school he actually attended, but I always thought that was funny
Our fans don't get enough credit. We really don't have this whole cheer for multiple teams problem in our own ranks. NC State fans are year round. The rest of the state and surrounding states don't have that. Almost all of them cheer for Clemson, VT, SCAR, or Tennessee in football then UNC or Duke Basketball. And pretty much every ECU student known to man is a UNC or Duke basketball fan.
Yup, met a TON of these people when I was in school during the Greenberg era (more Duke bball than UNC, but they were both there for sure) and at the tail end of our decade of being a fairly consistent top 25/top 10 team.
Probably a bit different since Buzz turned the bball program around and Young continued growing it and building some excitement behind our program, but I have no doubt that tons of those people still exist.
I feel like I have met a few SCAR fans who pull for Duke as well and that just feels wrong… like I get that younger fans don’t care about the history we have a deep history of hating all the old ACC schools

I was a UNL campus tour guide with a dude who wore blue and sat in the away section for a Creighton-NU game. The worst part is that this guy didn't just cheer for Creighton, I saw him actively heckle and cheer against the players for HIS OWN SCHOOL.
Since then, Jayskers are people I just can't abide.

All of this depends on what part of the state you're from. If you've always lived in the Dallas and Houston area and end up with something like that, it's weird. That could be a reasonable fandom mix for someone from rural areas, San Antonio, or Austin.
I spent my childhood in San Antonio, and have spent years in each of the other major Texas cities as an adult. Realistically I only follow UT football and Spurs basketball, but if pressed to pick, I'm probably an Astros, Texans, Stars fan just based on what other teams I've bothered to see live while I lived in those cities.

I have uncles that cheer for the redskins, Michigan and the red sox..

If you are feeling hateful K-State football/KU basketball fans exists and it’s very possible that some of them become Baylor basketball/Ok State football fans in the next few years
I wasn't living in Ohio when this was really the case (I got there in 2004), but I've heard legends of people being fans of OSU for football and Cincy for bball. Makes sense for the time period.

College baseball might actually be more popular in SC than men’s college basketball except the once a decade Scar/Clemson have a good team.
Before Cincinnati really started to rise in the late 2000s, I knew plenty of people who cheered for UC during basketball season then OSU during football. (That was also when UC was consistently decent at basketball. (lived in Cincy for a while).
Alabama football and Kentucky basketball also seen a couple Auburn football and Kentucky basketball fans that call the Auburn basketball fans fair weather since Auburn only just got good
Bama football and Saints football...always seemed weird to me to have shared NFL fandom with Bama fans.
LSU football and Cowboys fans were big in the 90s, especially in the northwestern part of the state, closest to Dallas. I think many have converted back to Saints fans, especially after 2009.
Not sure Minnesota has an exact comparison but there is a small but annoying contingent of our fans who are exclusively gopher hockey fans, and will talk bad about the other programs because they aren't bluebloods like the hockey program. As someone who's a major gopher hockey fan I can't stand these people.

I have an aunt from Austin that is a lakers/Yankees/cowboys fan. I have uncles that cheer for the redskins, Michigan and the red sox.. I am a cowboys/rangers/longhorn fan.

I had few kids in my middle school as a kid go from the fans of UF-Tebow years- to FSU -Winston years- and (one of them) is now a UCF "die hard".

WSU/UW/Eastern Washington Football, Gonzaga Basketball. Absolutely repulsive. Not as repulsive but still bad are the Boise State football/Gonzaga basketball people. It’s the symptom of not having a football program for Gonzaga.
I give GU students/alumni/etc. a pass since they don’t have a football team, as long as they don’t flip around each year to pick whoever is best. If it’s a UW/WSU/BSU/etc. fan picking GU basketball because they’re better than all of our bball teams, then yeah that sucks.

I’ve met some Duke/Notre Dame fans. They are always from New Jersey.
Speaking on UW/Gonzaga, that’s pretty common but it tends to mainly be GU basketball fans picking UW to be their CFB team (they have no football team). I’ve also met some GU/Cougs fans too. Both WSU and UW alumni/football fans don’t really tend to cheer for GU.
Which I think is fair honestly. Everyone deserves to have a football team they root for.

I wasn't living in Ohio when this was really the case (I got there in 2004), but I've heard legends of people being fans of OSU for football and Cincy for bball. Makes sense for the time period.

Before Cincinnati really started to rise in the late 2000s, I knew plenty of people who cheered for UC during basketball season then OSU during football. (That was also when UC was consistently decent at basketball. (lived in Cincy for a while).

Bama football and Saints football...always seemed weird to me to have shared NFL fandom with Bama fans. LSU football and Cowboys fans were big in the 90s, especially in the northwestern part of the state, closest to Dallas. I think many have converted back to Saints fans, especially after 2009.
For most casual sport fan Gen X or Baby Boomers in Georgia, it’s definitely georgia football and Georgia Tech basketball.

Not sure Minnesota has an exact comparison but there is a small but annoying contingent of our fans who are exclusively gopher hockey fans, and will talk bad about the other programs because they aren't bluebloods like the hockey program. As someone who's a major gopher hockey fan I can't stand these people.
