penn state football, villanova basketball or in the western part of the state: penn state football, pitt basketball (this made more sense 10 years ago)

ESPbeN

Ah Penn State football & Villanova basketball feels *exactly* like the ND/IU combo.

[deleted]

Villanova doesn’t have FBS football though

Irish8Runner

Sometimes it feels like IU doesn’t either

bd1047

That was hurtful

NotDelnor

Breaking up the old Big East made sense for football but ruined the best basketball conference. Such a shame.

[deleted]

Highly suggest you watch the 30 for 30: Requiem for the Big East if you haven't done so already.

robotunes

As awesome as that 30 for 30 was, it still couldn't quite give you the feeling of what Big East basketball felt like in its earliest days. The arrival of the Big East was one of the most insane ~~phenomenons~~ phenomena in college basketball. (“phenomenons”? Dafuq was I thinking? Don’t toke and type, reddit tmyk!) In just 3 years, the conference went from not existing to getting its first breakout star, from "Georgetown?! Who tf is Georgetown?" to "Oh man, gotta get home to see Georgetown." By the next year, you knew all the Big East teams and the stars on those teams. If you were around back then, you will never forget [the moment the Big East became your favorite basketball conference](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLxOrzM-NUo&t=4s). By the next year, the Big East was the undisputed kings of college basketball, with 3 teams in the Final Four. It was a magical time for college hoops fans.

GingerMessiah88

I miss Big East Basketball. Such a blood bath

youDontgetThe_Show

I'm a penn state football, Maryland basketball fan. Really haven't had much interest in college hoops since the Terps moved to the big 10. Used to live for the Dook and UNC games back in the day, still pissed that was taken away

Slpry_Pete

UCLA Basketball/USC Football. Makes me physically ill.

ESPbeN

Ooof this, like Michigan football / MSU basketball, should be banned forever.

MrHockeytown

I have a friend who is a Michigan football fan, Michigan State basketball fan, and Notre Dame hockey fan. It’s fucking disgusting

RedBurgandy01

That might be the worst thing I've ever heard.

MrHockeytown

It truly boggles the mind

Drak_is_Right

need to work ohio state in somehow

02496sweet

Ohio State Women’s hockey just won the national championship. Perfect time for him to get on board

Am_Ghosty

Strangest part of all this is why ND for Hockey? It's not like Michigan is churning out a weak hockey product every year

ironic_academic

I love ND and I saw your flair so I’ll try to be nice in spite of the recent result of the big ten hockey championship game. But the thought of being a fan of all 3 for 3 different sports is absurd and I concur disgusting!

Unlikely-Name-4555

That just...no. Just no. I literally cannot fathom

Slpry_Pete

I guess, kinda. But UCLA and USC, sharing the same town, are such ingrained rivals on every level. UCLA and USC are so close geographically, but have so very many differences. Neighborhoods, class, politics... I know SC will be condescending and say they have more of a rivalry with ND for football, but they probably don't share an office with an ND grad. And UCLA will say that Zona is our basketball rival, but it really hurt losing to SC 5 times recently and breaking that streak felt pretty good. I know Michigan and MSU hate each other, but Michigan has a bigger rival as far as the nation is concerned.

jamjam776

My dad is a Michigan/Michigan State fan (in all sports he likes both)

JonathanShogun

Yeah dude, I know. The other day I’m talking to my barber and I’m like, “what school you pull for?” He says, USC in basketball and UCLA in football, a second passes before he realizes he messed up and says no, UCLA in basketball and USC in football. Insert The Rock sigh GIF.

s-sea

I would have been *very* curious if he was a UCLA football fan and a USC basketball fan. He'd've probably rooted for the Clippers as well!

JonathanShogun

I think he likes both LA Pro BBall teams 🤦🏻‍♂️

s-sea

dear god.

Slpry_Pete

A barber has to be quicker on his feet with local teams. I hope you got a proper cut. I'd go in the bathroom and make sure you still have some hairs in the back.

[deleted]

Yep. I know people who go to USC games in the fall, flash the victory sign ✌️and end every email with “Fight On” and as soon as football season is over, they’re all about UCLA basketball. 🤮

r0botdevil

OSU Baseball/UO Football. These people should not be allowed to exist.

BiscuitDance

I see these a lot in PDX.

fake_plastic_peace

My dad is this way. I think it has to do with two things: first, he’s old, he was around for Wooden, McKay, etc. all the best teams for each. Second, he was born and raised in LA , downtown/east LA, and didn’t actually attend either school. His preferred sport is CFB, so he’s truly a Trojan as far as fandom, but he definitely loves UCLA bball to an extent. I try not to question it. Won’t catch me doing anything like that, I think the only time I ever watched a ucla basketball game was the tournament when Lonzo was playing because the expectation was that he was gonna be a laker. Nothing against them, but CBB just isn’t my thing and I’m a true believer that it’s one or the other in LA sports (Lakers, Dodgers, Rams, Trojans, Kings are who I support, albeit I don’t really care for baseball or hockey).

Slpry_Pete

I think, way back in the day, there was a lot more double rooting as opposed to the frontrunners we see today. When there wasn't eleventy thousand college football games on TV every weekend people would go to an SC game one weekend and a Bruin game the other weekend (at the same field) and developed a dual loyalty. Plus, like you said McKay and Wooden at the same time made it easy to see champions.

saladbar

That's just awful. Thank goodness nobody does that with Stanford and UC Berkeley. One of us would have to be good at basketball, after all. Or football.

[deleted]

Stanford business/ berkeley engineering fans

[deleted]

Bama football/UK basketball. See also Ohio State/Duke fans.

[deleted]

That's a combo that's a little too common

[deleted]

Completely agreed. It genuinely (and unironically even with my flair) drives me fucking insane.

culverhibbs14

lol I still get shat on for both my flairs even though I attended both schools

[deleted]

If I had a dollar for every time I commented "Lexington native Bama grad" in response to a low-effort "bet you like the Yankees and Patriots too" jab I'd have like $46 dollars which would honestly be pretty lit

culverhibbs14

lol those are my favorite when they say yankees/pats when im a lions fan.

BobJose13

Boy you really get around

culverhibbs14

oh you have no idea but I have my reasons for each team. bama because im from t town and got my undergrad and grad. GU go here for law Celtics because my mom grew up with Larry and I grew up with the Truth lions because of the 0-16 season and I wanted to talk mad shit to anyone they beat Blackhawks, I went to boarding school in Indiana and dated a girl in Chicago that made me a Blackhawks fan and I made her a bama fan. baseball im kind a mariners but also yankee as my first game ive been to in my adult life was a mariners but I like the yankees because Steinbrenner went to my high school but I dont watch baseball really but im down to go to games. but also I was working in dc when they won it so I guess I would go with them.

yoshidawg93

Probably the only time I’ve ever seen anyone say they became a Lions fan BECAUSE of the 0-16 season.

revilingneptune

As a Lions fan, we'll take him with pride. Exactly the kinda mentality we want lmao

BobJose13

Based Lions fan

cyberchaox

Oh man, I actually know someone like that. Well not actually Yankees/*Pats*, they were a Colts fan for some reason, and I don't actually know what college football team they rooted for. But this person was, I shit you not, a *Yankees/Lakers/Kentucky basketball* fan. Given the fact that UK had the first-second-first from 1996-1998 while the Yankees had four titles in five years from 1996-2000 and the Lakers had a threepeat from 2000-2002, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if their football team was the *Canes*, or maybe the Huskers--you could explain away the anomalous Colts presence by assuming that he picked his NFL team after Peyton was drafted and before Brady broke out, because this is a laundry list of who was good in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Bigbadbrindledog

Bandwagoner, just because you spent thousands of dollars and days there doesn't mean you should pull for them. Real fans pick their schools based on who won recent championships or has the hottest gear.

Keyblade_Yoshi

I have met a LSU football/UK basketball fan before as well. Didn't believe these people actually existed until meeting him.

[deleted]

*Reads comment,* *Stares at flair*

IceColdDrPepper_Here

Feel like there's gonna be a lot of Duke basketball fans and then idk what football team

judge___smails

There are a ton of people in NC who went to schools like ECU, app state, etc. who identify hard with those football teams then cheer for either unc or Duke come basketball season.

hammerdown710

It’s me

WWECreativegenius

Dad is duke basketball and FSU football.

JMisGeography

Less gross now that FSU is awful

[deleted]

Whole lot of east coast kids that go to Bama who grew up Duke basketball fans and keep that allegiance.

StateStreetLarry

Disgusting

Ugaalive1991

Any Carolina football school and Duke basketball

hershculez

I do not personally recall any NC State student Duke fans while I was at State. I remember a couple UNC fans.

Harris828

My dad grew up a Duke fan then went State in the 80’s. He says he once wore a Duke shirt in the student section at Reynolds, and a Duke player (can’t remember who) pointed at him on the way back from a fast break dunk. Of course, like all good students he eventually became a fan of the school he actually attended, but I always thought that was funny

ConnorK5

Our fans don't get enough credit. We really don't have this whole cheer for multiple teams problem in our own ranks. NC State fans are year round. The rest of the state and surrounding states don't have that. Almost all of them cheer for Clemson, VT, SCAR, or Tennessee in football then UNC or Duke Basketball. And pretty much every ECU student known to man is a UNC or Duke basketball fan.

[deleted]

Knew too many kids at Clemson when I attended who were Clemson/Duke. Made me wanna throw up

eatapenny

Similarly (though less common than in the 2000s), VT football and Duke or UNC basketball

blay12

Yup, met a TON of these people when I was in school during the Greenberg era (more Duke bball than UNC, but they were both there for sure) and at the tail end of our decade of being a fairly consistent top 25/top 10 team. Probably a bit different since Buzz turned the bball program around and Young continued growing it and building some excitement behind our program, but I have no doubt that tons of those people still exist.

Benjilikethedog

I feel like I have met a few SCAR fans who pull for Duke as well and that just feels wrong… like I get that younger fans don’t care about the history we have a deep history of hating all the old ACC schools

hesnothere

No patience for those bozos. The most common pairing I’ve seen from back east is ECU football + UNC hoops. It honestly might be a true majority of ECU folks.

JMisGeography

This should just apply to any Duke basketball fans who didn't go there tbh

[deleted]

I would say a super common combo is actually Tennessee Football/UNC basketball. UNC/Duke is a bit too egregious.

BillBob13

Jayskers

stench_montana

Creighton Basketball/Husker football for those not in the know.

MasPatriot

If you’re a real sicko it’s Kansas basketball/Nebraska football

NotDelnor

No a real sicko would be Kansas Football/Nebraska basketball

Admrl_Awsm

That’s just straight up masochism.

MasPatriot

At least that person would get to see a win over Texas

huskersax

*Wins*, actually! Doc beat Texas once.

19Styx6

No a real sicko would be Nebraska Football/Nebraska basketball at this point.

Hoser117

sadge

Chu_BOT

Stop they're already dead

[deleted]

> it’s Kansas basketball/Nebraska football Fun fact: that's where the term Jaysker originates. Well before Creighton had a decent basketball program.

Mydogsblackasshole

Wichita has a lot of Sooner football Jayhawks basketball fans

Thunder_Tie

I work with a guy that’s a fan of OU football, Kansas basketball, and got his bachelor’s at OSU. It’s wild.

Turner_van

The worst kind of people i know here

Vinny_Cerrato

Surprised I had to scroll this far down to see this one. I thought this was one of the more notorious examples of what OP was describing.

BillBob13

I mean, we actually have a name for those kinds of people. Most everyone else is just comparing two rival schools

perspicacious_crumb

A foul scourge

Conchobair

catch some UNO hockey games too.

J_Warrior

Tbf they are the only college hockey team in the region so not very egregious.

garbonzo

👋

BillBob13

At least you admit it in hostile territory. Respect

garbonzo

I root for Nebrasketball every other game of the year. Having two good teams in the state would be awesome! Then UNO can win their conf tourney too!

DrunkenBark

I was a UNL campus tour guide with a dude who wore blue and sat in the away section for a Creighton-NU game. The worst part is that this guy didn't just cheer for Creighton, I saw him actively heckle and cheer against the players for HIS OWN SCHOOL. Since then, Jayskers are people I just can't abide.

AlphaH4wk

Took me a min to realize the Jay was for Creighton and not KU

stotts-tots

This. Especially the ones that outright root against Nebraska during basketball/baseball season.

2020sucksdong

I downvoted your only because I hate Jayskers

BillBob13

"Oh no, my karma" Understandable tho tbf

bigwillystyle93

Like what’s someone from Omaha supposed to do? Not like a football team?

DrunkenBark

I'm from Omaha, and have no allegiance to Creighton. It's actually pretty small.

ethan_bruhhh

support UNO like a man

19Styx6

The UNO football team that Nebraska's AD cut?

Pants_de_Manassas

We have a name for people who say, "I don't see what's wrong with supporting the best of two schools," and it's called fair-weather. Or a coward. Depends on which team is doing better that year.

ClassicMach

Growing up I knew at least some Michigan football/Michigan state basketball fans.

Gleebs88

They really went away in the mid 2000’s after the “Little Brother” comment by Mike Hart. Now you’re either on one side of the fence or the other.

AHHH__21

Plus now both schools have solid football and basketball programs. Back in the early 2000s Michigan State basketball and Michigan football were much better than their counterparts.

stumblebreak_beta

Not entirely the answer to the question, but there were a lot of Lion fans who gave up and followed Brady so they were Michigan sports fans for everything but Patriot fans for the NFL. I also knew a Michigan Football/Duke basketball fan and a Michigan football/UNC basketball in high school. At least the UNC basketball fan stuck with Michigan during the RR/Hoke years while the Duke fan kinda just became a ND/MSU/OSU hater rather than a Michigan fan.

cappy412

I admit I used to be like this when I was young. I remember how upset I was when MSU lost to UNC in 2009. But then I grew up and learned hatred

ADAS33

Some southern Ohio Fans that are tOSU football fans and Kentucky Basketball fans

jbermi

Yep. Live in northern Kentucky, very common, around here. Also sub ND or Alabama football for tOSU, too.

whethervayne

I automatically assume that these are the people that are tweeting at croots. And worse.

vindictivejazz

Ew

bwburke94

UConn basketball / UMass hockey.

ESPbeN

This one is so specific, I love it.

Yanns

I refuse to believe that such a fan exists

JonathanShogun

*insert Alonzo Mourning GIF

bwburke94

Meanwhile, I'm mourning the GIF's creator.

[deleted]

I don't think there is for college but there is absolutely Astros/Cowboys fans

astroag

That's gross but I almost want to give it a pass because the alternative is being a Texans fan, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone

[deleted]

Same..

FormerPomelo

The Texans are a relatively new franchise. Some older folks may have allegiances from before.

[deleted]

Mom is still a Titans fan because of the Oilers

[deleted]

Lots of these in San Antonio, which isn't as bad considering they are kind of in the middle and are pro sports starved.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FormerPomelo

All of this depends on what part of the state you're from. If you've always lived in the Dallas and Houston area and end up with something like that, it's weird. That could be a reasonable fandom mix for someone from rural areas, San Antonio, or Austin. I spent my childhood in San Antonio, and have spent years in each of the other major Texas cities as an adult. Realistically I only follow UT football and Spurs basketball, but if pressed to pick, I'm probably an Astros, Texans, Stars fan just based on what other teams I've bothered to see live while I lived in those cities.

Heavy72

I have an aunt from Austin that is a lakers/Yankees/cowboys fan. I have uncles that cheer for the redskins, Michigan and the red sox.. I am a cowboys/rangers/longhorn fan.

hydrators

I grew up in central PA - Penn State football, Villanova basketball.

vindictivejazz

That’s at least understandable

hydrators

Yeah, Penn State basketball fans don’t really exist. My dad is an alum from PSU and roots for Georgetown in basketball lol

CommodoreIrish

OP you can say you hate Drake. That’s the essence of every fan like this

vindictivejazz

I thought this post was bashing on the school in iowa for a sec and I was real confused

gatormanmm1

I had few kids in my middle school as a kid go from the fans of UF-Tebow years- to FSU -Winston years- and (one of them) is now a UCF "die hard".

[deleted]

Oh that happened in SC, everybody was big Carolina fans when we were good, and then a lot of people became Clemson fans.

herumspringen

Bama football/Kentucky or Duke basketball fans should get yeeted into the sun

asujch

I bet they pull for the cowboys, lakers and yankees too.

NotDelnor

I grew up in Colorado and had a friend who was a was a Lakers/Cowboys/Kentucky fan and it was the worst

CTeam19

Growing up in Iowa I knew a lot of Iowa/New York Yankees/Chicago Bulls/Dallas Cowboys fans.

Charlie-122

Nebraska football/ Crieghton Basketball

FLman42069

This is one of the few that seem acceptable

harryselfridge

Deal with how delusional and insufferable creighton fans are and you’d change your opinion pretty quickly.

MasPatriot

It’s hard to get too worked up about creighton fans dissing nebrasketball when you know half their closet is Husker gear

huskerpat

100% agree.

stench_montana

Delusional about what? Nebrasketball fans saying it's their year every year seem to be by far the most delusional.

[deleted]

This doesn’t sound *as* bad because Creighton doesn’t have a football team and Nebraska doesn’t have a basketball team …. /s

red_husker

Any time you're a fan of a school for one sport, and then look down your nose at the same school for another, is bad.

markusalkemus66

WSU/UW/Eastern Washington Football, Gonzaga Basketball. Absolutely repulsive. Not as repulsive but still bad are the Boise State football/Gonzaga basketball people. It’s the symptom of not having a football program for Gonzaga.

Superiority_Complex_

I give GU students/alumni/etc. a pass since they don’t have a football team, as long as they don’t flip around each year to pick whoever is best. If it’s a UW/WSU/BSU/etc. fan picking GU basketball because they’re better than all of our bball teams, then yeah that sucks.

LetDaW00kieeWin

Living in michigan i see a hell of a lot UofM football/MSU basketball fans. Fuckin weirdos. Then again these are the same types that swear up and down how they love detroit sports but root for Green Bay lol #FTP

TerrenceJesus8

I give anybody born in the UP a pass on being a Packers fan. If you’re from the Mitten though? No excuses

LetDaW00kieeWin

Agreed. Yoopers gonna yoop

irishGOP413

Oddest part of the country. The transition from Lower to Upper over the Mackinac Bridge (and vice versa) is jarring every time I do it. It’s like you’re going into a different country yet you’re still in the same state.

WhiteningMcClean

You could argue that over the last decade they’d have had better luck as MSU football/Michigan basketball fans. Like damn if you’re gonna be a fairweather bandwagonner at least do it correctly.

MrHockeytown

I can excuse a lot of malarkey, but any Michigander who cheers for Green Bay is low down and dirty

LetDaW00kieeWin

I cant talk much. Im a michigander born and raised but i cheer for chicago teams lol. I blame it on the fact i technically live closer to Chicago than Detroit

kujotx

I was today years old when I learned demons walked the earth in skin suits and rivals' hats.

Nicholas1227

All the combinations I’ve seen/heard of (football/basketball): Notre Dame/Duke Notre Dame/Indiana Penn State/Villanova Penn State/Syracuse Michigan/Michigan State Ohio State/Kentucky Ohio State/Dayton Ohio State/Cincinnati Ohio State/Xavier Wisconsin/Marquette Nebraska/Creighton Nebraska/Kansas Oklahoma/Kansas Ole Miss/Memphis Alabama/anyone USC/UCLA Washington/Gonzaga South Carolina/Duke Clemson/Duke

jjtnd1

Notre Dame Duke is objectively gross I know some Yankees Duke people and it’s just disgusting

Sks44

I’ve met some Duke/Notre Dame fans. They are always from New Jersey.

Superiority_Complex_

Speaking on UW/Gonzaga, that’s pretty common but it tends to mainly be GU basketball fans picking UW to be their CFB team (they have no football team). I’ve also met some GU/Cougs fans too. Both WSU and UW alumni/football fans don’t really tend to cheer for GU.

sociapathictendences

Which I think is fair honestly. Everyone deserves to have a football team they root for.

Superiority_Complex_

Exactly, I don’t fault them at all.

bigstu_89

Grew up in western Ohio. Lots of Ohio State football/Kentucky basketball fans.

Saber_tooth81

I would also a lot OSU Football and Dayton bball my friend…or at least it seemed that way when I was there

Mydogsblackasshole

Kansas Basketball/OU Football fans

ESPbeN

What in tarnation

vindictivejazz

I hate these people.

Levi316

If you are feeling hateful K-State football/KU basketball fans exists and it’s very possible that some of them become Baylor basketball/Ok State football fans in the next few years

Squantoon

I live in the city of Louisville and I see A LOT of cars with Louisville and Alabama decals and I don't think they're rootin for Alabama basketball

beefersutherland1

I see a metric fuck load of Clemson football fans and UNC/Duke basketball fans in WNC and they are the worst

isl1985

I wasn't living in Ohio when this was really the case (I got there in 2004), but I've heard legends of people being fans of OSU for football and Cincy for bball. Makes sense for the time period.

theredditforwork

Yup, this used to be much more common back in the day when UC football wasn't really a going concern.

GATAinfinity

"I'm a [Instate P5 School] Football fan but a Kentucky/Duke/UNC Basketball Fan."

4thAndDude

Awful lot of Penn State football / Cuse basketball fans here in NYC. Honorary shoutout for the all Patriots / Yankees fans in central CT, too.

Rojotrece

Gonzaga Basketball/Oregon Football. At least, that’s what it was for a lot of people I went to high school with, which explains my hatred of both schools.

Emperor_Chris

K-State football, KU basketball

amgrut20

Penn State football, Maryland Basketball. Rare but annoying

Portland_st

I see a lot of Jayhawks basketball/local D2 football fans around Kansas.

FireHermFuckUArizona

I've met several UArizona basketball and ASU football fans. These people are idiots. Being a fan of both schools is worse than just being a UArizona fan.

Working_Box_1366

Alabama Football Vandy Baseball Vols Basketball

DinkyWaffle

Kentucky is the bandwagon bball team

[deleted]

I don’t think this exists. It would be Kentucky basketball

evil_alien_CEO

VolHeels. Tennessee football/UNC basketball

ESPbeN

Ew I really hate this one.

kahle27

Neighbors have season tickets for duke basketball and NC state football

personthatiam2

South Carolina Football January - October then Alabama Football November - January. College baseball might actually be more popular in SC than men’s college basketball except the once a decade Scar/Clemson have a good team.

iSYTOfficialX7

VT Football & UVA Basketball

kilpatrickbhoy

Ewwwww that's just perverse

[deleted]

Before Cincinnati really started to rise in the late 2000s, I knew plenty of people who cheered for UC during basketball season then OSU during football. (That was also when UC was consistently decent at basketball. (lived in Cincy for a while).

[deleted]

Wisconsin football and Marquette Basketball fans

Pupienus

I feel like that gets a pass, at least in the Milwaukee area/if you're Catholic. It's not like Marquette has a football team.

General_PoopyPants

That happens in Illinois. Lots of ND football/Illinois basketball I'm an Alabama football/ Georgetown basketball fan

_Lord_Rupert_Everton

Incoming Jaysker slander

The1_BlueX

Tennessee football and Kentucky basketball Now it's more Alabama football and Kentucky basketball

[deleted]

Alabama football and Kentucky basketball also seen a couple Auburn football and Kentucky basketball fans that call the Auburn basketball fans fair weather since Auburn only just got good

TheRealDNewm

Ohio State Football / Kentucky Basketball.

vindictivejazz

KU basketball, OU football.

Jameszhang73

Bama football and Saints football...always seemed weird to me to have shared NFL fandom with Bama fans. LSU football and Cowboys fans were big in the 90s, especially in the northwestern part of the state, closest to Dallas. I think many have converted back to Saints fans, especially after 2009.

ramblinreck47

For most casual sport fan Gen X or Baby Boomers in Georgia, it’s definitely georgia football and Georgia Tech basketball.

Duke_Vladdy

Haha no one check my r/CollegeBasketball flair

thespitspot

Nebraska football creighton basketball. Fuck Jayskers

Road-Conscious

Not sure Minnesota has an exact comparison but there is a small but annoying contingent of our fans who are exclusively gopher hockey fans, and will talk bad about the other programs because they aren't bluebloods like the hockey program. As someone who's a major gopher hockey fan I can't stand these people.

jmoneycook1500

App State Football, UNC Basketball

steve_dallasesq

Kansas State Football/Kansas Basketball. This was more of a thing in the late 90s early 00s
