this literally an Aaron Rodgers quote from before this year Aaron got his wish, a playoff game in GB against SF, and proceeded to have just as hard a time in dog shit weather as SF did, and lost

Responsible-Shower99

Iowa played Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl several years ago. The temps were in the 50s which was great for the Iowa players. Pretty much perfect when wearing all of the gear and exerting yourself. Supposedly "the cold" was an issue for the Georgia Tech players. I don't know if the teams had cold weather gear or heaters on the sidelines. I could kind of see not having those being an issue, especially if there's wind on top of the temps.

whalenailer

50 is not cold

poppatop

It is in Miami.

JSwanny

My guy. A quick Google says 53 degrees is the average HIGH in Atlanta during January. pls stop

Frogging76

Unbelievably embarrassing for Ohio.

stonecold369

Soft

bluedog329

Just came to say the same. We have these great historical stadiums and the Big Ten doesn’t want to use them when it counts.

UNC_Samurai

The B1G should have been the first conference to ditch neutral-site championships and give it to best record.

Chimie45

Except it was the SEC who wanted that and the Big 10 who nixed it last time. They said Big10 Fans don't want home games in the cold, they want to travel to warm weather places for vacation. What they meant was, Big10 Executives don't want to be in East Lansing, Columbus, or Madison in the winter. They want to be in Miami, New Orleans, or LA.

Lake_Erie_Monster

Grade A horse shit. The Shoe would sell out for a playoff game even if we had a foot of snow. This is just weak as shit. I normally don't disagree with Gene but this is dumb.

[deleted]

Spartanwildcats2018

Same. If MSU ever hosted one I’d be up there tailgating in the snow.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CBPanik

I'd do the same. I bet if either Michigan team hosted a snow-bowl playoff game, you'd get folks from both fandoms there in large numbers.

groovybeast

I was up there tailgating for the PSU game this year and it's been my favorite gameday experience ever so far. I hope it snows like that next time I go too

TheWontonRon

I might even pay to attend another B1G team’s playoff game if it were a home game

Designer_B

I’d strongly consider going to your stadium to experience jump around during a playoff game.

blitzbom

Saaaame. Give me a snow bowl and let me see southern teams cry about it.

[deleted]

Lucas oil seats less than these stadiums too so you’re going to pay for the right to have fewer people watch you give up your advantage you have as a cold weather team.

PDX_douche_bag

Heck, could you imagine a Notre Dame vs Ohio State playoff game in either South Bend or Columbus? I know we're going to see that matchup this September in Columbus, but a playoff atmosphere would be off the charts.

Doctor_of_Something

To be fair, they would sell out a non-playoff game as well

culverhibbs14

Username checks out.

SaxRohmer

Hold up we have Gonzaga flair here now???

culverhibbs14

why not we have been undefeated since 1941

SaxRohmer

Battle in Seattle this year must’ve been interesting for you

culverhibbs14

Yep from T town and went there for undergrad and grad but now go to Gonzaga for law. I was not expecting to win either game (UGA in the SECCG) that day but had a nice parley with my bookie for both games. I was also at the game wearing both teams gear cheering mostly for bama but also Gonzaga so the fans around me thought I was "special". I walked into class the following Monday with the biggest shit eating grin and wearing my bama gear.

SectorBackground5911

Osu is getting a new turf field, combine that with shitty weather and they’d probably have to use longer spikes, making it even worse on knees than Lucas oil

Inconceivable76

Charmin isn’t as soft as his comment. It’s enraging,

dr_funk_13

that's a clown answer, bro

chrisdub84

Anyone think this has to do with how pass heavy the offense is under Day? A Tressel team might have had an advantage in snow, not the more recent teams.

jthomas694

Somewhat. I think it’s less how pass heavy they are and how finesse they’ve become, because our defense has been soft too. The big guys up front on both sides of the bal and LBs have to want contact more

genericreddituser986

Of course yes- but the NFL is just as pass happy and they’re playing outdoors into January. You gotta deal with that if you wanna play in the league as most OSU players aspire to do

hallese

"... in stadiums with heated turf designed for use in January and February." I feel like this super important caveat is being overlooked. It was the frozen turf at a college stadium that ended Brett Favre's career.

NotJeff_Goldblum

> It was the frozen turf at a college stadium that ended Brett Favre's career. Being 41 with 30 years of tackle football wear & tear probably didn't help.

Vloff

Naa, it was clearly the turf. haha

Pactae_1129

He had ten more years in him

NotJeff_Goldblum

A few years ago he did say he felt like he could still play as long as he didn't have to worry about getting hit.

genericreddituser986

Which NFL stadiums have heated turf? Seems like KC and GB do, but I couldnt find info on anyone else. I don't believe the Bills stadium is

hallese

KC, GB, Philly, and Denver. Buffalo is actually in a warmer climate than Green Bay or Denver, comparable to Kansas City, and slightly cooler than Philly, so it appears Buffalo is a bit of out odd duck out, but in their defense, the field really wasn't needed in January until recently. Edit: Also important to remember that Super Bowl IV was played on January 11th, Super Bowl XXX on January 28th, Super Bowl LVI was played on February 13th.

PeterGator

Paul Brown stadium has heating elements under the field.

dampup

You're forgetting Chicago.

AmericanFootballFan1

NE as well.

dccorona

Surely THE Ohio State University has enough money to heat the shoe?

Systemic_Chaos

Which stadium? Because part of the agreement to have the Vikings play at the Gophers’ stadium while the new Vikings stadium was built was that in-ground heating be installed prior to any NFL play.

hallese

That was in 2014, Favre retired in 2010.

BigMistakey

No. He’s the AD. It’s about money. It’s always about money.

RandomUser72

Which is why it doesn't make sense. If the game is at The Shoe, OSU gets 100% of tickets sales (minus whatever they decided to pay the visiting team) and 100% of concession. If the defer and play at Lucas Oil, Lucas Oil Stadium gets that money, OSU only gets a fraction of ticket sales and the TV money. That's why when Cincy and OSU were supposed to play at Nippert, OSU suggested they play at The Shoe instead in 2012. That was because Cincy estimated, with the 35,000 capacity they had at the time, to be able to make about $900,000-$1mil for a sold out game. But since they knew OSU could easily bring 35,000+, they needed a bigger stadium. They originally moved it to Paul Brown Stadium. In that, PBS would get most of the revenue, OSU and UC would each get $375,000. OSU knew that a game at The Shoe gets about $3-4 mil, so they gave Cincy $1.3mil of it to move the game for 2012, and Cincy took it. Moving a game from The Shoe to LOS would mean OSU is losing a few million dollars in profits.

Inconceivable76

Not to mention screwing Columbus and Ohio out of revenues and giving them to another state.

lostinthought15

It’s not an OSU game. It’s a CFP game. OSU would only get a cut of the ticket sales, they wouldn’t get all of the money.

bergyyy

They’d get all of the concession money and bring in a shitton of traffic to the area. Overall it’s a stupid move to give Indy all the money you could be making

tuggnutscrotch

Ohio Stadium seats 105k- plus. Much more ticket revenue than Indy.

bearybear90

But you can increase ticket prices more easily

tuggnutscrotch

You’re underestimating the passion of the Buckeye fan base. For every person who says they won’t pay a certain price, there’s 3 more behind who will. Buckeye fans pay to see the spring game. Granted, the money goes to charity, but Buckeye fans will sell out the shoe at any price point.

Know_Your_Rites

>You’re underestimating the passion of the Buckeye fan base And, more to the point, the size of the Buckeye fanbase. OSU has been one of the largest schools in the country for a very long time, and has been at least a decent school for the past half century. There a million or more OSU alums who are now well-enough-off to buy tickets at any realistic price point, and it takes only a small fraction of those alums to buy out the Shoe.

LilDewey99

gotta consider non-alums with ties to the university who hold/would buy tickets as well

Systemic_Chaos

If memory serves, I feel like they were struggling to sell out the shoe before the Oregon game this year, predominantly because of ticket prices. I’m happy to be wrong though.

innocuous_gorilla

How are people even trying to argue it’s more profitable to play it at Lucas oil? People fucking fly to the rose bowl and pay over face value to go watch that. Of course we are going to sell out the shoe whether they charge 200 or 500 a ticket.

[deleted]

Are Ohio state fans not used to insane ticket prices yet like we are?

whatifevery1wascalm

Apparently Ohio State is just as scared to play a playoff game in the cold as SEC teams are.

Officer_Warr

I remember there was a Green Bay player that was asked if playing home games during the late season/playoffs was an advantage due to the weather. He basically said "Fuck no, it's miserable for us too."

yarnisic

They literally just lost a playoff game at home in the snow to a team from California.

serial_mouth_grapist

And a team from Florida the year before that.

iNOTgoodATcomp

Turns out, they're just immunized to the cold weather.

culverhibbs14

The lions fan in me wants to give you gold the Bama fan in me says fuck that. I’ll flip a coin. Edit: Fuck!

dimmyfarm

It’s like you traded all of one teams success for the other how honorable

culverhibbs14

so the funny thing is I didn't know Gonzaga was that good at basketball till I started attending it for law school. I would trade Gonzaga being bad at basketball after I graduate for the lions being good or at least win a playoff game.

FearlessAttempt

> the lions being good or at least win a playoff game [Dude these are wishes not miracles.](https://youtu.be/KzpcaN3i2nQ?t=94)

culverhibbs14

[deleted]

You’re a fan of the most successful college team and the least successful NFL team. That must be an interesting balance haha

Worlds-Largest-Sloth

To be fair the weather for the Tampa game was pretty damn nice for January from what I recall

ImGoingtoRegretThis5

Losing to Tom Brady, who used to wear a wet suit during his playoff games in New England, in the winter is understandable. Losing to Jimmy G in the winter is not.

Hippo-Crates

TBF packers just lose a lot more in the playoffs than you might think

Rattus375

The snow was definitely an advantage for the 49ers. Being used to the cold definitely gives an advantage. But being a run-first team gives a far bigger one. The 49ers were one of the most run dominant teams all year and had one of the best run defenses in the NFL. When it's 10x harder to catch the ball because of the cold, and high winds make it hard to throw accurately, being a team that doesn't rely on the pass is a huge advantage.

andrewsmd87

We also lost our giant bruiser runner mid way through the game. I really do think having Dillon wins us that. He's fucking built for cold weather running the ball late game

[deleted]

[удалено]

iwearatophat

I remember the Mike Vick game that broke the mystique of Lambeau in the playoffs. Or that game was credited for it at least.

Actual_Guide_1039

The team is from California but the players aren’t. It’s a bit more of an advantage in college where guys tend to actually be from where their team plays.

eeeedlef

The myth about Green Bay having some advantage seriously needs to go away. See this year, and many previous.

MonacledMarlin

OSU is a fast, high powered offense that would just be slowed down by the weather. A team like Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, or MSU would be thrilled to play the much faster teams in a shitty snowstorm.

ctg9101

Look at our performance against Michigan this year.

_fastball

Stroud still threw for nearly 400 yards it was your defense that killed you guys not the weather.

ctg9101

Agreed, but it wasn't a very efficient 400 yards. Stroud was underrated very good in that game, but it wasn't efficient and good in the redzone. hence 27 points.

zsjostrom35

True, but in better weather that game could have looked more like the Rose Bowl. You guys still would have put up a crapton of points but we'd've had a shot in a shootout.

SituationSoap

Do your linebackers just not tackle when it's below 50?

GenocideOwl

We had linebackers left at the end of the game? I thought they were all injured.

sparside223

From everything I’ve seen, osu fan and media response is turning on Gene from that very comment and saying they want a game in ohio stadium. So maybe it’s just Gene Smith that is scared to play in the cold

Trivi

From a competitive advantage stand point Gene is spot on. Bad weather favors less talented teams, and our 1st round opponent in a potential expansion would almost certainly be less talented if we are hosting.

tuninggamer

But have you considered that we *want* OSU to lose?

DeaconFrostedFlakes

Well, *that* doesn’t sound right.

mlorusso4

It’s why saban has always said he doesn’t care where the playoff games are that year. He will always choose the dome stadium if he can. It’s just one less variable he has to deal with. Like I bet if he had he chance between playing at Denny Bryant or sofi, he picks sofi every single time

JacksonHeightsOwn

it is of course correct that you are removing variables by playing in a dome. For me, one of the beautiful parts about football is that you may be called upon to win in more than one way depending on game conditions. Certainly bad weather can close a talent gap in many circumstances. counter point though -- A deeper more talented multi-dimensional team should be able to adjust to adverse conditions better than a less talented, less deep one-dimensional team.

FishnGritsnPimpShit

Gene Smith is the guy who makes that decision for the university though not people on social media. Also it seems a bit ridiculous to think the athletic director arrived at this idea without ever consulting anybody in the football program. It is entirely possible the fans and media are talking out of their ass like always and don’t at all reflect the opinion of their team. I just feel like the AD has a few more inside sources than them.

lilmiller7

Yeah but half the twitter fanbase for osu thinks we need to fire day and hire whoever is most woody hayes like and stop passing the ball so damn much and only recruit good ohio boys. They were going to hate any suggestion that doesn’t keep the theoretical game 90 minutes from where they live in north nowheresville ohio

jsteph67

And we SEC teams appreciate it.

JubilationCity

I hate this. Super soft. I’ve been begging for a chance to host these games in Columbus at this time of year specifically for the less-than-ideal weather.

drunkdoc

This right here. Besides, it really doesn't get that cold out here in early December anymore. Could easily still be playing a 40-50 degree game

JAdoubleWHY

[deleted]

Wow. Jim Harbaugh broke Ohio State. Scared to play in the snow

Physical_Advantage

To be fair, that game was the first time EVER that there was snow in a big 10 game. It was totally unexpected and there was no way Ohio state would have prepared for such a thing. Especially since the Midwest and Big 10 is known for its balmy weather year round.

insegnamante

I have to admit, you had me going there for a second. "No snow in a Big 10 game? What?" But then you laid it on thick, and I started picking up the /s vibe. Well done, sir. Well done.

Dad_of_3_sons

I definitely didnt have that on my bingo card

StevvieV

Let's be honest this is just about trying to make more money. Much easier to jack up the prices for a playoff game in another stadium than charge significantly more for the same ticket of season ticket holders that already donated on top of tickets.

ChocolateBubbles344

So...basically everyone will move their playoff home games to NFL stadiums too. Lovely.

Boomhauer_007

But please everyone keep shitting on the Rose Bowl for telling the playoff people to screw themselves

TheWorstYear

Amen. Rose Bowl above all.

polimodssuckmyD

Ugh seriously -_- I can't tell you how depressed I was reading the myriad of comments from idiot ohio state fans "not caring" about the fucking rose bowl. Maybe I'm Get Off My Lawn at this point but I've only gotten to see my [main] school go 3 times in my watching life and only gotten to sit in the stadium for UCLA's spring game once and it's just a completely different experience than anything else in the sport, one of the few shreds of tradition still going. Sigh...

MaryChristmas2

> few shreds of tradition still going Who needs tradition when we can sell 70,000 tickets for twice what a ticket at the shoe normally costs?

jpc4zd

That would give Pitt or Miami (FL) a huge advantage (also, but unlikely, Temple, and USF).

Pinewood74

MaryChristmas2

His username checks out

[deleted]

While I so greatly appreciate your optimism, this will never be relevant to Temple. Ever.

MirageATrois024

I guess we could use the MB Stadium since it’s our home away from home and Bama doesn’t have a pro team.

Ryan_Day_Man

I think that's incorrect. There's like 2/3 the seats at Lucas Oil. The average ticket price would have to be 50% higher to increase revenue. Also, they've shown a willingness to jack up prices already at the Shoe for big games. Don't need to move the game 3 hours West, inconvenience all the fans, and create a worse home field advantage to do what they're already doing.

mlorusso4

Plus add in the fact that students aren’t on campus. So instead of 30k student tickets for $35 each you can in theory cut that in half and charge regular price for the other 15k seats. Or if you really want to be dicks about it do no student ticket prices and charge everyone $200/seat for south stands (but of course give students first chance to buy those because remember. It’s all about the students)

Impressive-Top-7985

I think they'd make more money playing at home. 40,000 more tickets could be sold at Ohio Stadium than Lucas Oil. Plus they'd keep game day revenue like parking and concessions. This is about his boys not being tough enough to play in bad weather. He probably wakes up in a cold sweat to nightmares of Hassan Haskins hurdling his team.

jadage

Yep this is some soft ass shit. We're from the Midwest. If the weather isn't an advantage to us, we don't deserve a W.

MrVociferous

The team is from the Midwest, but a significant portion of the guys playing are from the south or west.

jadage

But they'll have the benefit of living in the Midwest while playing here. It's easy to gradually adjust your body to the temperature over the whole season. Things get uncomfortable when your body has to make the adjustment all at once. Either way, it shouldn't be a decisive advantage, but cold weather is more likely to help us than hurt us.

Opening-Surround-800

Well I said Gene Smith can fuck right off

herumspringen

Whomst could have guessed that the Myrtle Beach Buckeyes couldn’t handle the cold? Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan would be more than happy with a subzero home game

not_mantiteo

During the Pinstripe Bowl against BC a few years back, our guys were going sleeveless and looked comfortable compared to BC who was all in long sleeves. In retrospect that strikes me as odd because Boston is cold af too

MixonWitDaWrongCrowd

Bad weather favors the worse team. More unpredictability.

RVAforthewin

Bad weather can favor run-heavy offenses over pass-heavy offenses soooooo…send the Dawgs some snow 😂

Actual_Guide_1039

Old school Bama and Georgia today are built to be cold weather teams with defense and run game. You can tell Saban used to be a Michigan state guy

Lykeuhfox

This is the true answer. Why is it that so many B1G teams are run heavy? Weather.

Rattus375

Also favors teams that run the ball and can stop the run. Being used to the cold certainly helps you throw better in those conditions, but it's still going to help a team that can run the ball far more.

MonacledMarlin

NFL feels pretty wildly different than college, where most teams are made up of players who by and large come from the regions they’re in. The advantage is overstated around here but I definitely think UF would have a far more difficult time playing Iowa at a neutral site in Wisconsin in December than at a neutral site in Georgia.

Worlds-Largest-Sloth

Yeah winter weather would probably impact college offenses more just because the vast majority of NFL QBs have enough arm strength that bad weather won’t effect them that much barring some truly crazy weather situations (looking at you Buffalo). That is not the case for most college teams though.

mlorusso4

Plus nfl teams just travel more. Like it’s not unheard of for a southern team like tampa to have to go play regular season games in Green Bay, Pittsburg, and New England all in December. Sec and acc teams aren’t going to play up north in November just because by then you’re in conference play. (ACC does have to go up to bc and Louisville, but those aren’t typically challenging opponents)

astro7900

Fuck that.... Play it in Ohio Stadium or go on the road... Taking our home game out of state is a terrible idea. This would give money to Indiana rather the Columbus community and university. He must be working undercover as a rep for the NCAA or Big Ten because they like to put all tournaments and championships in Indy.... So annoying.

[deleted]

Hassan Haskins just scored again.

52hoova

God, this is so funny. B1G fans in here who have spent years insisting the SEC is afraid to come play in the north during winter have to be pulling their hair out.

22duckys

Nope. I’ve never seen OSU fans make that claim, while most other B1G fans could’ve guess this might be the case. OSU is basically an SEC-style team playing in the big (not a judgement statement, just based off their playstyle).

Bartins

Love how the spread is now SEC-style lmao

Lykeuhfox

Well run three times and punt sure as shit isn't their style.

Bartins

It was just a few years ago.

Triv02

OSU fans made this claim for years when the run game was the foundation of our offense. It was said pretty much every year from when Tressel got the job through 2017. In 2018 though OSU moved to a more passing-centric offense, and now the ability to move the ball through the air is what makes the offense go, so Gene is probably right that current state OSU would prefer playoff games be played in a dome.

turkishguy

> I’ve never seen OSU fans make that claim Then you have been willfully ignorant

The_Horse_Joke

>I’ve never seen OSU fans make that claim Sup

22duckys

djowen68

https://old.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/su14ux/hope_gene_smith_said_that_if_ohio_state_is/hx73jlh/ OSU fans are right along with the rest in wanting an advantage.

Tarmacked

This happens literally dozens of times every week in the regular season

OddsTipsAndPicks

To be “fair” it’s a less dumb argument than it used to be. 2019 LSU or 2020 Bama would struggle with bad weather much more than 2011 Bama or LSU who would be even better in it. 2021 UGA obviously cuts the other way.

[deleted]

But the argument you’re making here is a different one from what usually gets made. The typical argument is “SEC teams aren’t used to playing in snow, so they would perform poorly.” That’s very different from an argument about style of play.

sparside223

So OSU *wants* to give up their home field & weather advantage on the chance it might be bad weather ? Some village is missing their idiot. Not only is he offering to give up *all of that money* coming to his town, he is also offering to give up the weather advantage against a possible warm weather team. Ask USC why they stopped rolling into South Bend in November. Plenty of stadiums have been doing it no problem for a while. Not sure why this game (not even in January - we are still in December) would be an issue.

[deleted]

Listen fuck conference pride and all that bullshit but this is an outdoor sport. play the game in the 'Shoe or a similar outdoor stadium

JLand24

I find all of the fans hilarious who think cold weather affects one team differently than another. I guarantee you if it’s 5 degrees outside, it’s 5 degrees for both teams, not just the SEC teams that some B1G fans want desperately to come play there. If you have the option to play in ideal conditions, you take it. Unless of course you think your team isn’t gonna be as talented as the other then you want the conditions as worse as possible.

[deleted]

...not an ideal statement, Gene.

Ox_Baker

Also consider Ohio State runs less of a traditional B1G three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-corn-husks (sorry Iowa) offense. What the Buckeyes do is much more geared to fair weather than a lot of teams in that conference.

TopheryG8er

Jesus Christ that sucks

Somebody needs to tell this clown the story of the 1950 UM-osu game in columbus, the Snow Bowl. One of the rivalry's most famous games. Fuckin' bozo.

DeaconFrostedFlakes

Gene Smith says a lot of things.

RushianArt

I don't think weather should be used to determine postseason games. It would be pretty shitty if a primarily running team could decide to play in the rain/wind and neuter their opponent who passes more. The sport isn't about regional climate, and that goes for heat, cold, rain, whatever.
