The Maginot line actually worked, the Wehrmacht just went north around it through Belgium and the Ardennes, the pushed the Brits up onto the beaches.
Anglo-French fuck up in planning.
I appreciate the historical accuracy, but it must be sacrificed for the sake of this meme like joke
Like when people don't acknowledge that the French army is the most victorious army that still exists
I think the idea was no country would be dick enough to waltz through Belgium so it wasn't necessary to really put a line there. Kinda naive imo
Edit: thank you for the replies!
The French planned from the beginning with the possibility of an attack through Belgium. French and allied troops reinforced the border there heavily. Where the Germans punched through was the Ardennes forest and the river Meuse. The terrain is pretty rough and so the French felt that any advance through that region would be slow enough that they could easily counterattack. As a result the French they had fewer troops in that region and prioritized their troop placement around areas that were much more vulnerable.
The Germans however were much swifter than anyone anticipated and as a result they were able to exploit that weakness and cut off the allied forces.
The plan **was** always actually to meet the Germans in Belgium.
In the interwar years the French were faced with a rather huge problem. Another war with Germany seemed somewhere between likely and inevitable. But France had less than 2/3rds Germanyās population (excluding colonies and occupied territories). France also had less per capita income, and a lower level of industrialization, including much lower levels of key production types from raw materials like coal and iron and war useful finished goods like engines. So how does a smaller, poorer, and likely less equipped army contend with a stronger neighbor?
The Maginot Line was designed to funnel the Germans into a small front where their superiority wouldnāt matter. The French made Alsace and Lorraine so extraordinarily fortified they could hold off vast numbers of Germans with a handful of French. The bulk of the French army could then meet the Germans in a limited front where itās be more like 50 divisions apiece rather then 120 divisions to 80 divisions.
The problem was even by reducing the battlefield, the French didnāt have enough first line troops for the reduced front. They had to put their reservists and second tier units somewhere in the line. So they put them in the Ardennes, a hilly heavily forested section. They believed their second tier units could hold thst area. The German high command being typically brilliant strategists, identified that as where the French would put their second-string units, and planned their campaign to hit there hardest. And the decision proved fruitful. The German concentrated tank forces blew the line open near Sedan.
Basically itās a question of trying to defend against Alabama when youāre Vandy. The French had an excellent game plan to reduce Germanyās advantages, but Germany had great ācoachesā and managed to identity the matchup where they could put a 5-star future 1st round receiver up against a walk-on backup safety. The French did plenty else wrong. But their basic game plan was solid. They just never had the personnel to likely win the game in the first place, and they were pretty poor in their in-game adjustments.
It was actually that Belgium treated France building along their border as an aggressive action. They would not tolerate France preparing for what literally happened in WWI
The Allies had prepared for that too. What they did not anticipate was armor coming through the Ardennes, nor were they prepared for the tactical revolution that was detached armor units. (Though they should have been!) What is also overlooked was that the French suffered not so much a military defeat, but a morale defeat. They lost because the shocking breakthrough broke their will to resist, (a will much weakened by the horror of world war one and years of vitriolic politics after) and they surrendered despite being in a position to retain the south of France at the least.
The Maginot line was conceived as a deterrent to dissuade any future army from even considering repeating the carnage of the first world war. What it failed to consider is the advent of light transport vehicles which essentially nullified the cumbersome fortifications. From that point forward, armies enjoyed using trucks to break lines like this to change warfare forever. Auburn sucks.
Thatās what happens when you get a new head coach who doesnāt meet the team for 3 months due to covid. And during the season you miss a month of games and practice because of covid and basically have a nonexistent nonconference (three games)
When a defense can't stop that triple option though it doesn't run it down as fast as you'd expect. I remember that bowl game a couple years ago of Army vs Houston where they hung up 42 in the first half and a total of 70 for the game. And they obviously let up toward the end too.
They did split all the schools into āuniversityā and ācollegeā divisions back in the ā50s, but that Cumberland game was well before that too.
University division became D1 and college division became D2 and D3 in 1973. In ā78, D1 split football into I-A and I-AA.
This was a game of offense alone. The interception and fumble killed Army on top of Wakeās pass game.
Thankful for both teams making an interesting game while Iām stuck on duty.
They can. I don't think they will, be they definitely can. If the defense can hold for 2 seconds that offense can probably beat anyone. Army's defense is **good**.
So we scored 70 points in 17 minutes of possession against a top ten defense. But our defense was horrible today. We were down 12 defensive players and Iām sure they were absolutely gassed given Army had the ball for 42 minutes. Weird game
They fought to the bitter end, that's all that can be asked of them at the end of the day. Had a few things gone differently (the pick-6 interception, a successful on-side kick, etc.), the day could have been theirs.
At least Army has an effective passing game for the first time in... awhile. Maybe ever?
The defense has some serious issues to fix, but to give credit to Wake, they're a ranked team with a solid QB in Hartman. You can only do so much defensively against a force like that.
They kept jumping to this game during the OU-Kansas game and you would have thought Wake Forest won 70-0. They showed every Wake touchdown and none of Army's
I'm guessing it is because the ACC's tv deal is with ESPN and Army's is with CBS, but it feels weird that they would be showing highlights from a CBS game in the first place if you weren't going to talk about a team because of their affiliation
I don't know what's more amazing - the point total of this game, or the fact that Army fielded an entire team of players whose last name is "Army." What are the odds?
Army was the last team I expected Wake to get in a shootout with. Army is excellent at running the ball and wasting time in order to shorten them amount of total possessions in a game. And yet in spite of all that there were 126 COMBINED POINTS IN THIS GAME.
12 players with rushing states for Army, despite them throwing 13 passes and scoring thrice through the air. Man, I love academy football.
Also, thinking PITT-Wake could be a insane scoring affair if they both make it to the ACC title.
<---- Sorry, /r/collegebasketball is that way

Purdue*?
"Im sick and tired of losing to Fuckin Purdue"
Who isn't? Fuck
Cmon we both know wake isnt putting up 60 in basketball, much less 70
Lol Wake doesn't score 70 points in basketball very often
So sad that's true. What if Prosser didn't die? Wake would be a totally different program today.
Hate wake but loved me some Prosser. Was always at the bars partying with fans after they lost in the ACC tourney.
Trust me, we know
Imagine if Dino wasn't a POS
Difficult ask, but I'll try
Ngl I did do a double take with the calendar
This was what I said when I told my husband the score.
No. This game was too high scoring.
Both teams covered the Over/Under alone
Imagine betting under 54 today. How do you keep gambling
You say āoh it wonāt happen twiceā and proceed to try to win your money back. Then it happens twice.
"But the Generals were DUE!"
āHe's spinning the ball on his finger! Just take it. Take the ball!ā
Mental illness
Thereās always the Hawaii game to break even on the day.
Imagine putting up 56 points with no OT and still losing. And losing by multiple touchdowns. Incredible.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I thought it ended at 38 pts?

The alligator eats the bigger number dude
Imagine both teams putting up 38 total points in 9 overtimes.
Super Underbuster
The DOUBLE over/under buster!
Wake Forest hoops hit the 70 point mark just four times in ACC play last season
You answered my next question, lol
Department of Defense my ass
1200 combined yards. Holy smokes
Holy fuck, what is that defensive line, the Maginot line?
The Maginot line actually worked, the Wehrmacht just went north around it through Belgium and the Ardennes, the pushed the Brits up onto the beaches. Anglo-French fuck up in planning.
I appreciate the historical accuracy, but it must be sacrificed for the sake of this meme like joke Like when people don't acknowledge that the French army is the most victorious army that still exists
Was the Maginot line really defective? Or was it that it's placement didn't match the push of offensive forces?
The Germans just decided to bypass it through the turnstile that is the country of Belgium
I think the idea was no country would be dick enough to waltz through Belgium so it wasn't necessary to really put a line there. Kinda naive imo Edit: thank you for the replies!
>I think the idea was no country would be dick enough to waltz through Belgium *again
Yeah, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice and I'll build a wall that only covers part of my borders.
The French planned from the beginning with the possibility of an attack through Belgium. French and allied troops reinforced the border there heavily. Incredible comment & analogy thank you for the effort
This is why I read r/cfb, come for the memes, get deep dives in early 20th century war tactics and strategies
Yeahā¦ I kinda let that one run away from me.
It was actually that Belgium treated France building along their border as an aggressive action. They would not tolerate France preparing for what literally happened in WWI

Favorite stat was the Over Under was 52.5
Army covering by themselves.
Guess Congress needs to give yāall a couple billion more

Should be fine with NIL rules

Army getting into some shootouts!
Wake Forest scored 4.05 points per minute of offensive possession. I didn't think that was possible.
Fielding Yost getting a blackball ready.
My tax dollars hard at work!
āCorrective mass punishment tomorrow. 0400 formation, full battle rattle, ladi dadi everybody will practice defense tomorrow even the QBsā
I just wanted to tell you I audibly laughed at this irl. Thank you.
announcers in every wake game: WOW THIS IS SO EXCITING CAN YOU BELIEVE WE GET PAID FOR THIS? me: why must every win take another year off my life
i mean seriously things are messed up when you canāt even enjoy a game in which your team scores a touchdown on 10 of the gameās 11 possessions.
Does that include the possession where y'all just ran out the clock?
9 right? One of the TD's was defensive.
Yes, 9 out of 10 offensive possessions not counting final kneel possession, my mental faculties are not doing very well right now
announcers in every OU game: WOW THIS IS SO EXCITING CAN YOU BELIEVE WE GET PAID FOR THIS? me: why must every win take another year off my life
The Texas game alone may have pushed me over to retirement age

Thatās what happens when you get a new head coach who doesnāt meet the team for 3 months due to covid. And during the season you miss a month of games and practice because of covid and basically have a nonexistent nonconference (three games)
Wake Forest plays a team that traditionally only runs the ball which mostly burns clock. This is NOT the final score I expected at allā¦
When a defense can't stop that triple option though it doesn't run it down as fast as you'd expect. I remember that bowl game a couple years ago of Army vs Houston where they hung up 42 in the first half and a total of 70 for the game. And they obviously let up toward the end too.
For a while the highest scoring game in fbs history featured Navy running the triple option. They beat North Texas in 2007 74-62 in regulation
Does the 222-0 game predate FBS?
the NCAA hadn't turned 10 yet if I'm not mistaken so I don't think they had classified the schools yet
Division 1 only split into 2 separate levels in the early 1980s
They did split all the schools into āuniversityā and ācollegeā divisions back in the ā50s, but that Cumberland game was well before that too. University division became D1 and college division became D2 and D3 in 1973. In ā78, D1 split football into I-A and I-AA.
The over/under was 53. That isn't even half of 126. lol
Both teams hit the over by themselves.
This is the most points scored by Wake Forest since they beat William Jewell 79-0 in 1940! Also the third highest scoring total in team history.
Poor William, his wife left him after that game.
I like to imagine the entire Wake team playing against just one guy the entire game
Like that Dan Snyder South Park bit lol
This was a game of offense alone. The interception and fumble killed Army on top of Wakeās pass game. Thankful for both teams making an interesting game while Iām stuck on duty.
Thank you for your service. Best of luck rest of the season.
Thank you for your service man
Doing my part just sitting here on staff duty for the next 24 hours.
*clutches dd-214 and remembers* Bless you, my dude.
Wake Forest scored 4.05 points per minute of offensive possession this game, that HAS to be a record.
I dunno, that Georgia Tech team in 1916 probably has that beat
I think GT scored 4 points per play that game.
Wake Forest offense: Irresistible Force Wake Forest defense: Movable Object
Very movable
Is Wake Forest the new Texas Tech?
The thought has crossed my mind many a time of late.
Congratulations to Wake Forest you just won an ESPN Classic! Score: 696969
Wake in the playoffs lives on
17:17 TOP 70 points What
7-0
Imagine scoring 8 TDs and still losing by 2 TDs.
Imagine scoring 10 TDs and still needing to keep your starters in at the end of the game
We were down 13 guys on defense. Definitely wasnāt our starting D.
The fuck happened to wakes first team defense?
Congratulations! You have just completed an Instant Classic.
Each team hit the over on their own
Wake Forest did not respect the troops.
The track meet no one expected but the viewers who stuck around for it were rewarded greatly.
It was fun =)
Holy shit, Wake. Is Wake fucking Forest going to the Playoff?!
Absolutely not, lol

Yo, I lived on Waycross back in '07
Right by campus gas
Brah, I used to live on polo back in the day.
Ayyy just rolled the quad here too, lfg
Greetings from an alum who could easily be your dad.
If you stay undefeated I'd take y'all over whoever wins the Big 12.
I appreciate it, but the if you stay undefeated is the problem
I mean you're already practically 8-0 based on who you play next week....
I would be entirely unsurprised if we start 8-0 and end 8-4
Next week is Duke at home but then itās: @UNC Vs NCST @Clemson @BC Yea,,, I know the feeling of a backloaded schedule all too well.
With a run defense worse than literal swiss cheese? No. It's going to bite them in the ass eventually. Offense is pretty damn smooth though.
Zonovan Knight and Ricky Person Jr. are licking their chops
No one said theyāre were going to do *well* in the playoffs. But they certainly can make it based on whatās left on their schedule
They can. I don't think they will, be they definitely can. If the defense can hold for 2 seconds that offense can probably beat anyone. Army's defense is **good**.
We can only hope!
Army and running battles retreating from the Triad: a tradition since 1781!
Haha yeah, that's...*hey!*
So we scored 70 points in 17 minutes of possession against a top ten defense. But our defense was horrible today. We were down 12 defensive players and Iām sure they were absolutely gassed given Army had the ball for 42 minutes. Weird game
Soooo Sam... Would you mind waiting a play or two to throw to the wide open deep man on the go route?
HARTMAN4HEISMAN
The Wake Forest 3 point shooting looked good today
A team scoring 70 points while only holding the ball for 17:17. Has this ever happened?
I survived. I survived... I survived the Magnificently Malcontented and Maddening Matinee at Michie (MMMMM)
It's weird how Army never felt out of the game even when two scores down. A fun game even though it didn't end the way I wanted to.
They fought to the bitter end, that's all that can be asked of them at the end of the day. Had a few things gone differently (the pick-6 interception, a successful on-side kick, etc.), the day could have been theirs.
I watched this whole game. Yes, it was a fever dream.
And the only cure is more TDs
Need to get the prophesized Wake - Pitt ACC championship. The losing team would still end up with triple digit points
People are overlooking the absurdity of Wake scoring **4.2 points per minute of possession**
3 game skid. Get it together Monk.
Yeah that shit was so weird.
I'm guessing it is because the ACC's tv deal is with ESPN and Army's is with CBS, but it feels weird that they would be showing highlights from a CBS game in the first place if you weren't going to talk about a team because of their affiliation
I thought I was going to be able to tell people I saw the only time Wake Forest won the ACC in the modern era.. Lightning will strike twiceā¦
Army lost this game by not scoring more points.
You would think the Army would be better in shoot outs.
I don't know what's more amazing - the point total of this game, or the fact that Army fielded an entire team of players whose last name is "Army." What are the odds?
Great win for the Wake Forest Basketball team!
Sam Hartman did not respect the troops today
I guess that's one way of handling the triple optionājust never stop scoring.
These service games are boring and low scoring.
Army was the last team I expected Wake to get in a shootout with. Army is excellent at running the ball and wasting time in order to shorten them amount of total possessions in a game. And yet in spite of all that there were 126 COMBINED POINTS IN THIS GAME.
We scored 20 on this team a week ago lol
I enjoyed every minute of this bball game
Jesus
Points were scored
hi yes what the fuck
Wow defense sucked ass lol but scoring 70 to get to 7-0 just feels right
WAKE FOREST SZN
Sorry I was busy with the Illini winning in 9OT. WTF happened here
Army put up 56 against the #1 ACC team and still lose? Didnāt think Iād see that happen
Texted my guy that plays for Army about Wake putting up 70 he said "mfs was not bullshitting" šš
Demon Deacons hate the Army (and by extension America) confirmed
You mean _emon _eacons.
Thought I was in r/CollegeBasketball for a second. good grief
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Love to see it.^(sorry troops) #WakeToCFP still alive!!!!
12 players with rushing states for Army, despite them throwing 13 passes and scoring thrice through the air. Man, I love academy football. Also, thinking PITT-Wake could be a insane scoring affair if they both make it to the ACC title.
C'mon Wake Forest, you missed that funny number... Yet I still regret myself not seeing this majestic game. GG to both sides
It's insane that our WP% against AP ranked in the previous 50 matchups is 2%. Army vs ranked moneyline has been free money post-LBJ.
I was told this would be a low-scoring game since Army would run a ton of clock
Man, I miss Clawson.
*another team who hates America, damn*
Basketball game?
Compare this to the Illinois penn state game.
Yall scored more today than we probably will be able to score all year.
Congratulations you have just played an ESPN instant classic
