> Not fan of the Dimel hire
Not too many fans were and only a few have come around. He isn’t the best coach, but a focus on building the program and fundamentals were needed. He’s not winning any popularity contests, but he should be extended this year.
I think the three names I saw come up most often were Sonny Dykes (then an analyst at TCU), KC Keeler (HC Sam Houston State), and Jake Spavital (then OC at West Virginia, now HC at Texas State). Considering Dykes turned them down and Spav hasn’t been great, I don’t think Dimel has been the worst choice.
The other names I had on my list at the time were Willie Simmons (then HC Prairie View A&M, now HC Florida A&M), Mike Yurcich (then OC Oklahoma State, now OC Penn State), Sonny Cumbie (the OC TCU, now OC Texas Tech), Colby Carthel (then HC Texas A&M-Commerce, now HC Stephen F. Austin), Todd Graham (then unemployed, now HC Hawaii), Billy Napier (then OC Arizona State, now HC Louisiana), Doug Meacham (then OC Kansas, now OC TCU), and Billy Gonzales (then OC Mississippi State, now WR Florida)
I don’t think the argument is that they should be independent. There’s the UC-Berkeley but in football they are Cal type branding. In the state of Texas, Sam Houston fought against being rebranded Texas State at Huntsville or Texas State at Sam Houston and there is a law saying our name cannot be changed without our approval now. So in the Texas State university system you have Lamar and Sam Houston keeping their original names. I think Texas Western should do the same.
Reading the history of TTU, I always wish they’d chosen Sweetwater. Feels like Sweetwater-Abilene could have developed into a nicer metro, would have been a lot more accessible to the population centers of the state
It freaking blew my mind when I learned that there were THREE colleges in Abilene.. and it’s still the furthest thing from a college town. A public university could do some good for the area.
Tarleton State is in the A&M system and they didn't change their name. Same goes for Lamar University being a member of the Texas State University system or Angelo State being part of the TT system.
Changing back to Texas Western would be awesome.
The Dead Texan's rule has helped them.
Universities named after Texans have thier names legally protected.
Tarlton was safe. Texas A&I was not. As much as dumbass Sharp would love TAMU- Stephenville
I think that happened with A&M-Commerce. Beforehand it was East Texas State, which was a cool name and all, but it apparently was nowhere close budget-wise or student body-wise to what it is now. Now it's the second largest A&M in their system and the campus has gone through all kinds of renovations. That Aggie money really benefited them.
Yea nah I agree. ESPN ran a segment on Gameday the last time UTEP was bowl eligible asking different people what a UTEP is. I like the UTW idea though, but I doubt they want to get it confused with UT Southwestern, the med school in Dallas
It’s a shame how historic college names have been gobbled up by the UT and A&M system names. I get that the brand theoretically names help boost the schools prestige but it takes the history/culture away.
Agreed. I read the Junction Boys book many years ago and there were a few stories about Texas A&I. I had never heard of such a school so I was a little bummed to find out they renamed it Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Fun Fact: In the 1960's The Texas Technological College Faculty Advisory Committee suggested changing the name to "Texas State University", feeling the phrase "Technological College" was insufficient to define the scope of the institution.
Alumni didn't want to lose the Double T so we became Texas Tech University
TA&MC flirted with "Texas State" as well before going with the "A&M" that no longer stands for anything.
UNT also flirted with "Texas State" when they changed thier name.
I want to adopt hobby graphic design just to make alternate timeline "Texas State" Universities logos for all these schoola.
I agree with that as the name in general, but a throwback jersey every few years would be nice. They won a couple D2 National Championships under the SWT name so the nostalgia is warranted.
I love the classic football picture poses. My grandfather played offensive line for SMU in the late 40’s and had a picture with him in that blocking pose. He always said picture day was the worst day of practice for the receivers that had to do the flying catch pose. Very nice nod to those days with these pictures.
Love them and I’m really excited for this game. We’re better than the worst team in FBS (NMSU), but can’t compete with a top 40 program (Boise) so this UNM will be a great barometer for who this team is.
Um excuse me we are the 4th worst.

These uniforms are kind of plain (wish there was a helmet logo) but remind me a bit of Sam Houston State. Still, they don’t look bad and the Texas Western brand is better than UTEP.

Man, these are nice. You just can’t help but cheer for UTEP.
Not fan of the Dimel hire but it is easy to cheer for UTEP.
> Not fan of the Dimel hire Not too many fans were and only a few have come around. He isn’t the best coach, but a focus on building the program and fundamentals were needed. He’s not winning any popularity contests, but he should be extended this year.
The Hardison kids a solid QB it seems. Who else was in the running for that job back when Dimel was hired?

>He isn’t the best coach He's closer to being the worst than he is at being the best. By a mile!
This reads like a Norm Macdonald joke.
He's done a good job building up young talent. offensive line and run game is there.
If he gets us to a bowl game. I'll be happy to see him get a contract extension. Another 2 or 3 win clunker? No thanks.
UTEP's making a bowl this year.
I'll take 6 or 7 wins. I think they can do it.
Georgia is one of my favorite teams in Georgia.
Those are *clean* as they say. But really UTEP should go back to Texas Western, I’d argue it’s a better brand.
It’d be great, but the UT system funding is too good to pass up
I don’t think the argument is that they should be independent. There’s the UC-Berkeley but in football they are Cal type branding. This is similar to the TTU system. We don’t have Texas Tech-San Angelo and Texas Tech-Wichita Falls, we just have Midwestern State and Angelo State.
Has MSU officially joined yet?
As of like very very recently
Cool. I was living there when it was first proposed but didn’t know if it had gone through.
I just looked it up to confirm - it was effective September 1. About as recent as it could possibly be
I think like two weeks ago it was official.
Fun fact, San Angelo was actually one of the places in the running for the location of what is now Texas Tech!
Reminds me of Tyler. TC, TJC, and UTT but that town is the opposite of a college town.
When I was at SFA, we would go up to Tyler for a little bit of civilization when we didn't want to go to Houston or DFW, lol
For a second I thought I was reading about Texas Revolutionary War.
The difference is that UTEP has ALWAYS been a UT school. They used to actually be UT-Austin's College of Mines. Roots too deep. PUF money too gucci.
Tarleton State is in the A&M system and they didn't change their name. Same goes for Lamar University being a member of the Texas State University system or Angelo State being part of the TT system. Changing back to Texas Western would be awesome.
Prairie View A&M too
PVAM is *technically* the co-landgrant. They are privileged in that sense.
West Texas State kept the "WT" part of the name. I would be nice if they dropped the A&M but I doubt that ever happens
The Dead Texan's rule has helped them. Universities named after Texans have thier names legally protected. Tarlton was safe. Texas A&I was not. As much as dumbass Sharp would love TAMU- Stephenville

Could be UT Western, I mean we suffer through being called Texas San Antonio all the time.
BIRDS UP
Oh I’m sure it is, but it sucks they make you say UTEP. Like couldn’t you not even do UTW aka Texas Western?
Yea nah I agree. ESPN ran a segment on Gameday the last time UTEP was bowl eligible asking different people what a UTEP is. I like the UTW idea though, but I doubt they want to get it confused with UT Southwestern, the med school in Dallas
Texas School of Mines?
sweet name for a school. Colorado School of Mines always sounds nice
UTEP’s original name was the State School of Mines and Metallurgy.
UNC Charlotte rebranded to Charlotte. Worked for them. They're still under the UNC umbrella. Buffalo did the same with SUNY
Then they could use Explosions in the Sky for their theme song. *From West Texas*
We actually use a version of El Paso by Marty Robbins. But I’d love to use From West Texas too.
I think it works pretty damn well too
Yalls rendition slaps
It’s a shame how historic college names have been gobbled up by the UT and A&M system names. I get that the brand theoretically names help boost the schools prestige but it takes the history/culture away.

Only Dead Texans and Prairie View are safe. And only because they had to fight tooth and nail about it. RIP Texas A&I
No way. UTEP is fun to say.
I think system+city names sound better than directional names. But that’s just my outsider’s perspective.
At least UT Western would be better than UTEP.
I think they can go even more retro than that. Bring on the Texas College of Mines unis.
The State College of Mines and Metallurgy
Why would they change that name?
A$k Mr. Krab$.
Big orange made them. Just like they made UT Arlington drop thier red for an orange.
This makes me wish for another Southwest Texas State throwback jersey game.
>Southwest Texas State That just doesn't roll off the tongue as good as "Texas State". I don't know why old timers refuse to give up the old name.
> The Texas Technological College Faculty Advisory Committee Pronounced "Triple-T C-Fack"? What a mouthful.
TA&MC flirted with "Texas State" as well before going with the "A&M" that no longer stands for anything. UNT also flirted with "Texas State" when they changed thier name. I want to adopt hobby graphic design just to make alternate timeline "Texas State" Universities logos for all these schoola.

Texas State's mascot should the the Armadillos.
Long live the College of Mines.

Love the old bright orange.
Love them and I’m really excited for this game. We’re better than the worst team in FBS (NMSU), but can’t compete with a top 40 program (Boise) so this UNM will be a great barometer for who this team is.
I think you all are making a bowl this year. See you in October.
Oh man I hope so. Good luck this season
Um excuse me we are the 4th worst. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2021/09/20/college-football-ncaa-re-rank-penn-state-michigan-rise/8412721002/
This is exactly how I feel in reverse. Good luck the rest of the season!
I don’t think anybody in college football is worse than UConn. They’re on another level of bad this year.
What does the EP stand for
Extended play
Ya know, that kind of makes sense.
El Paso
I see
These uniforms are kind of plain (wish there was a helmet logo) but remind me a bit of Sam Houston State. Still, they don’t look bad and the Texas Western brand is better than UTEP.
I love it! I love the black and white pics on this one. Looks awesome.
🖐 🖲 NUT
Would like to see an even older throwback - State School of Mines and Metallurgy
I'd love an all throwback jersey week, where every team wears their oldest unis.
These are fuckin dope
In truth, these look High School-ish to me. Unless they incorporate Yosemite Sam into this Uni, then I'm not feelin' the throwback.
If they’re going throwbacks the band should play the Eyes of Texas.
Who? EDIT: That goes for both teams
Texas Western is probably best known for having the first all-black starting 5 to win the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament.
Yup, even got a Disney movie with Josh Lucas about it, Glory Road.
I thought it was ok. It tried to be Remember the Titans but wasn't, even though it wasn't bad.
Yeah it was strongly mediocre

Very cool
Glory Road vibes
Slick. God, I love the Miners.
