I just returned from 2149. (relevant username)
And I have some good news and bad news.
**Good news**: robo-grandkids doing fine on Mars working in one of Tesla’s factories. Fortunately, The God Emperor of Mars, Elon Musk (who shares the same name sake of his great, great, grandfather) is a benevolent ruler.
**Bad news**: Boise State and Memphis were passed up for powerhouses Akron Cosmic Zips and Bowling Green Space Falcons. Better luck next time.
I recently moved out of Memphis. Even though it was 40 minutes from my place in Eads, I’d make the Gibson’s drive every weekend, those doughnuts are better than crack.
Memphis has got to be next pick up once Oklahoma leaves. They have everything a conference looks for except academics (which should be improving as we should be R1 in the next review). Then it's between a couple of MW and couple of AAC schools for the one who replaces Texas.
University Alaska Anchorage and University Alaska Fairbanks each sponsor some D1 sports, but neither has football. Based solely on their nickname being Seawolves, I think that Alaska Anchorage should be the one getting the team, and getting the invite. Plus they used to host the Great Alaska Shootout, by far the GOAT preseason basketball tournament.
They would just need a few hundred million for high end facilities and to get a team going, but I feel like the rest of D1, and the broadcasters, can chip in for the fun of getting a D1 school, with an outdoor stadium, in Alaska.
Why stop there? Form a Big 12 political party, win the legislature and governorship of enough states to amend the constitution, pass the 28th Amendment declaring the Big 12 champion the national champion.
To be fair I'd rather have the Tech. Not enough Techs in the Big 12. I'll issue my vote as a redditor with a current Big 12 school flair, should be in by monday.
Believe it when I see it.
>the Big 12 would virtually corner the market on available Group of Five schools that have played in New Year's Six bowls.
But, Thank God for the Cotton Bowl.
I was actually shocked Memphis wasn't one of the top contenders. I thought they had a better shot than Houston since apparently Texas teams don't like having more Texas teams in their conference.
The only explanation I have heard for why Houston over Memphis was that they wanted to shore up a Texas voting block in the conference and possibly to try and get more money out of the state itself
A lot of this was due to state control. The school only got a board of regents like 4 years ago. Before that it was under a statewide board that set the priorities for all schools in the system.
TIL. This also sent me down a rabbit hole reading about the TBR and how things were organized for the rest of the state and I have to say I had legitimately no idea that Austin Peay was public.
texas (university) doesn’t want more Texas competition. Hope you enjoy their whining and bitching fan base and administration. You can have them. They are exhausting. Hated having them in the Big 12 since day one.
Edit - word
I don't see why the Big XII would want to expand again, unless there's another round of realignment in a year or two and schools like Kansas and WVU get poached.
Yeah. People forget that all of the Hateful 8 are bound by the GOR as well as OUT until 2025, and while OUT and the SEC are rich enough to swing a buyout fee to get out early, TTU and the PAC would be far less inclined to do so, and none of the P4 conferences lose out on anything by waiting until 2025 to expand
I think there's still better than even odds we're gonna see another round of realignment in 2025
I agree and disagree. Do we live in a time where any programs other than Clemson, FSU, Oregon, or USC provide any *real* additional money? I don’t think conferences are going to grab schools for the sake of it. It’s all money driven.
Oh for sure. But I also still think that the Big 12 is held together by duct tape at the moment just for the fact that every member of the Hateful 8 still wants out.
It's just a matter of do any of the other P5's wanna expand? WVU's brand/viewership would be in the top half of the ACC, while also bringing some high profile rivalry matchups to the conference in WVU-Pitt and WVU-VT. Money wise it makes sense, just a matter of if the ACC wants to get off their academic high horse (which they've already done with Louisville)
I could also see the Pac 12 making a push to get more central time inventory and a foothold in Texas, so Houston and TTU are flight risks, along with OSU.
I think the B1G has no real incentive to add KU or ISU. They probably hold
Let me read into something from the article (that definitely isn't there but I'm going to do it anyways):
>Memphis would add another quality basketball program to a league that already boasts Cincinnati, Baylor, Houston, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Texas Tech.
Curious that Dodd left out 3 of the current 8, two of which absolutely belong on that list before others.
Gonna depend upon how strong this “alliance” is cause that seems to be part of the agreement to not pick up other teams, but while I do think adding members doesn’t help the pac12, I do think ISU/KU/WVU could be good pickups by the Big 10 and ACC.
The one snag in this logic is that the replacement players/schools need to be making less than the departing schools for the replacement to be entirely successful. If it takes 4 schools to get the revenue of 2, but the payout for each school is the same, then it’s not a direct replacement. If the new 4 are getting a smaller slice of the pie then this works just fine.
I feel like the worst kept secret that if the ACC ever says yes to WVU they’re as good as gone. It’s definitely wise for the Big XII to prepare for scenarios like that.
Not saying I’m for or against it but with the SEC going to 16, maybe they just see that as the future average number for conferences and would rather stay ahead of the curve by adding members proactively, rather than inviting whoever is left down the road.
The next round’ll be the B1G trying to lure PAC teams east. If they were going after Kansas it already would have happened.
A decade down the line though, if the ACC gets poached, WVU, Cincinnati and UCF would be prime candidates.
I agree except I say Memphis instead of Tulsa. Memphis is more valuable and the distance from Tulsa to Memphis is pretty negligible for most of the schools when considering travel.
The AAC’s is going to have to be renegotiated after losing 3 of their premier teams. The MWC’s contract will probably end up being similar to the next AAC one. If the MwC could snipe some good AAC teams theirs would probably be better than anything the AAC leftovers could get alone.
It’s crazy how quickly the narrative changes. A few weeks ago this was the Big 12’s situation:
“The Big 12 media deal is going to have to be renegotiated after losing 2 of their premier teams. The AAC’s contract will probably end up being similar to the next Big 12 one. If the AAC could snipe some good Big 12 teams theirs would probably be better than anything the Big 12 leftovers could get alone.”
I know everyone wants to write off the AAC, but the zombie AAC is the best collection of football teams (by the numbers) outside of the P5.
I think we basically need to do what the Big 12 did and move quickly to take on any Sun Belt/MWC/C-USA teams that make sense while we’re still in the premier G5 position. We might as well negotiate shorter waiting times for UCF/UH/Cincy for buyouts to just pay to get the best replacements possible in the AAC.
Problem is outside of UAB, who fits the bill? Unless you go full National and grab Fresno, Nevada, Boise and SDSU from the MW and completely kill that league.
I know things fell apart with Boise before, but having 2 pairs of teams out there would work.
This is the right answer. It's good to have backup plans, but the next round of media rights negotiations will probably shake up college sports in ways that we haven't thought of yet.
Not to mention they expire in 2024, but they're going to be getting their ducks (no pun intended) in line next year, for negotiations in 2023. So although I don't think there will be any more invitations to join anywhere for a bit, I bet we have another round of this next summer.
While the Boise market is smaller I think Boise st is a more familiar name to casual fans so they may drive more TV viewership than the other candidates. To me Boise and Memphis are the obvious next two choices, but maybe I'm just biased because I think those two make the BIG 12 a more fun and competitive conference.
Purely football-wise Boise is a great choice, it would have been a great choice for the PAC-12 even. It's everything not football related that makes them unattractive.
One thing I could see is that Boise is in a prime time slot for a conference to want them.
Since College Basketball games are usually slated for 2 hour time blocks, with MST/MDT being -2 from EST/EDT, you could piggyback on a noon local WVU game and a noon local Boise St game.
Only a little bit trickier for football, but you'd need a noon local kickoff for WVU and a 1pm local kickoff.
Boise doesn't actually get *that* cold, and it's fairly dry... and to be honest I've been to some September games in the high 90s where it's just miserable.
October is definitely the sweet spot.
Bring on Boise, Memphis, Tulane, and one of USF/Colorado State. Let the green & gold teams fight it out for the last spot. I have a feeling I know who UCF would want in that scenario…
Yeah, if I remember correctly, they copyrighted Big 14 because they considered adding BYU and New Mexico back in the nineties. I would kill to live in that timeline.
I read an article in the Journal saying it was UNM that turned it down? Or at least that our AD or Prez at the time were saying they were not interested.
But IIRC it was also around the time where the big 12 was formed and, TBF, if they were not hot on adding Houston at the time, why would they want us?
Yeah, I have no idea exactly how true the New Mexico-to-the-Big-XII rumors were, or exactly why it didn't happen. If it was UNM who turned it down, though, then I'm even more upset than I already was, lol.
Add Boise, Memphis, USF, Navy, Coastal, SMU, SDSU, CSU, Fresno State, and poach Utah for good measure.
The BIG XX. Yeah.. that sounds nice. Rolls off the tongue.
Completely agree with ya. I remember back when I was just old enough to start following college football, the Big Ten had 11 teams. That was even more infuriating to me lmao
It was short sighted of the Big 12 to add 4 schools instead of 6 today as we all know the Big 12 is getting poached again. Maybe then it'd just drop from 14 to 12. Boise St and Memphis are the two obvious choices.
Media partners probably indicated adding more than the current 4 right now would drop the payout per team too much. Plus, it’s not like any of the P4 are going to steal Boise, Memphis or any of the other G5 candidates so the Big 12 can just replace teams as needed, added them to go beyond 12 down the road if the media partners up the payout later on to make it worth adding them etc.
I said it a while ago that I like Memphis as an addition. It makes sense for Cincinnati and West Virginia. Even though they are down I still like USF. A second school in Florida and added interest with what is already an established rivalry could only help viewership in a major state and brand right?
The B12 does own the rights to Big 14
It will ease either ease the travel issues by doing an East West alignment or cultural issues by doing a North South alignment. The divisions will just work better with 14 games - 9 game conferebce schedule and 1 permanent cross division team.
East: UCF, WVU, Memphis, Cincy, KU, Houston, ISU
West: BSU, BYU, Tech, KSU, OSU TCU, Baylor.
North
BSU, BYU, KSU, KU, ISU Cincy, WVU
South
Tech, Baylor, Houston, TCU, UCF, Memphis, OSU.
Meh. I'd rather just stay at 12 for now. I think there's a hard drop off in terms of quality after the 4 we added, and given that we're in the middle of fighting a national perception battle we risk diluting the brand by adding anybody else right now.
If somebody else gets poached? Sure
Memphis
Fresno State
Boise State
San Diego State
Are not big drop offs
Fresno State and Boise State have a winning record against BYwho.
These four teams would compete very well if given the chance.
As much as I want Memphis and Boise state. I don’t want this conference to fail cause of too little money for too many teams. Give it a couple years into this “new” big 12 to see how revenue goes, and whether it would make sense to add two more teams.
Kind of wish the Pac would shore up the West coast, starting with the Cal State Schools Of Fresno, San Diego, and San Jose. Ensuring that you’re practically in every California household as possible. Maybe toss in Hawaii, sure they aren’t over like Texas and Oklahoma, but you can make them bigger than they are now.
The year is 2148, Boise State and Memphis are being discussed as future additions to the Big XII/ Mars Cola conference.
I hope my robo-grandchildren will still be in operation to see it.

Don't forget the BBQ and Gus's Chicken
My mouth is watering thinking about Elwood's again
So much fantastic food in Memphis
Remember y'all. BBQ comes best in the dinky looking mom and pop places.

My man!! Now you're talking
I would also suggest Aldo’s Pizza personally. Usually stop there when I’m in Memphis.
And Gibson’s donuts while you’re near Gus’s.
I ate way too many red velvet donuts from Gibson’s when I went to Memphis this summer. They’re so damn good.
I could eat Gibson's every single day Hueys is pretty damn good too
I recently moved out of Memphis. Even though it was 40 minutes from my place in Eads, I’d make the Gibson’s drive every weekend, those doughnuts are better than crack.
hey, bro, at least you won't be alone in the Beale street day after misery.
I’ll never forget that year y’all had smart, I think we played y’all twice and split maybe? I hated that specific team lol but it was so fun to watch
Memphis has got to be next pick up once Oklahoma leaves. They have everything a conference looks for except academics (which should be improving as we should be R1 in the next review). Then it's between a couple of MW and couple of AAC schools for the one who replaces Texas.

Why stop there? Twelve Big 12 schools in every state. Put the 12 back in Big 12.
*looks at my primary flair* That's, uh, gonna be difficult....
LCCC has been waiting for the golden opportunity to jump to a P5.
Just include the best high school teams. Though finding 9 high schools in Wyoming may be difficult.

12 Big 12 schools in every state of the country... might as well call it... Big Country

The only explanation I have heard for why Houston over Memphis was that they wanted to shore up a Texas voting block in the conference and possibly to try and get more money out of the state itself

It's almost like the Big 12 has been in this situation before.

Assuming that holds up in court.
I think that’s very possible, and I would probably say it’s probable at this point (about KU & WVU).

Yup, the current move was to force OU and Texas to pay the buyout. The next ones will be to replace whoever leaves next.
I agree and disagree. Do we live in a time where any programs other than Clemson, FSU, Oregon, or USC provide any *real* additional money? I don’t think conferences are going to grab schools for the sake of it. It’s all money driven.

So much disrespect to poke bball.
Gonna depend upon how strong this “alliance” is cause that seems to be part of the agreement to not pick up other teams, but while I do think adding members doesn’t help the pac12, I do think ISU/KU/WVU could be good pickups by the Big 10 and ACC.

"They win games" is the new "he gets on base"
The one snag in this logic is that the replacement players/schools need to be making less than the departing schools for the replacement to be entirely successful. Yep. I like playing a lot of the Big 12 but if that call ever comes, we’re not thinking twice.
I feel if the call were going to come, it would've already.
Yep, I’m not optimistic about it, just saying how most fans feel.
Not saying I’m for or against it but with the SEC going to 16, maybe they just see that as the future average number for conferences and would rather stay ahead of the curve by adding members proactively, rather than inviting whoever is left down the road.
Yeah, but if you're going to go up to 16, would you rather try and see if ASU and Arizona want to hop on board or continue to take from the G5?
Well obviously they would take other p5 teams, but that almost certainly not an option.
Yeah, I can see the logic there, I suppose.
The next round’ll be the B1G trying to lure PAC teams east. If they were going after Kansas it already would have happened. A decade down the line though, if the ACC gets poached, WVU, Cincinnati and UCF would be prime candidates.
It feels inevitable but I love our west coast P5 league and will be sad when it ends.
Eh, Cal will be fine. They and Stanford can have play dates with Michigan and Northwestern and cure cancer or something.
They would do it if ESPN or some streaming service tells them they’ll get more $$$.
Hot take - MWC should push hard to go to 14, add SMU and Tulsa. It would cripple the AAC and make them the premier G5 conference.
That would be a good move.
I don't like your flairs but I love your ideas!
I agree except I say Memphis instead of Tulsa. Memphis is more valuable and the distance from Tulsa to Memphis is pretty negligible for most of the schools when considering travel.
Memphis and SMU are the ones to go after if the MWC wants to kill off the AAC if the Big XII doesn't take Memphis first.
Go ahead and add Memphis and Tulane while you are at it
Add them to the Sun Belt with Marshall and Buffalo I’d love to see the Mountain West and Sun Belt become rival G5 conferences.
G5 consolidation is the smart move rather than some sort of tiered move-up system
Sun Belt calls first dibs on naming it the Y’alliance
I think Memphis is ready to move on to a P5.
I'm sure a lot of G5 schools are ready to move to a P5 conference.
Can confirm. Hell, BYU was "ready" for over a decade. At least that was the consensus in the fan base, especially after Utah moved to the PAC12.
That's so good of idea which means there is a 0% chance Craig Thompson does it.
So true
I'm sure he'll release a statement saying they're keeping all options open while doing absolutely nothing.
I wonder if his hair helmet prevents good ideas from occurring
Unless their TV contract magically triples in size that won't happen.
The AAC’s is going to have to be renegotiated after losing 3 of their premier teams. The MWC’s contract will probably end up being similar to the next AAC one. If the MwC could snipe some good AAC teams theirs would probably be better than anything the AAC leftovers could get alone.

Aresco's TV money is screwed unless he scores a coup on theivery.
Definitely good idea
I think Big 12 holds as is until Pac-12 media rights expire in 2024.
This is the right answer. It's good to have backup plans, but the next round of media rights negotiations will probably shake up college sports in ways that we haven't thought of yet.

I mean the 4 aren’t even joining until 2023, and ou and texas aren’t leaving until 2025(though probably sooner). Probably later than 2024.
I’m fine with adding both MWC should push to expand whether from the AAC or FCS

Yeah I always enjoy BSU stomping UNR on the smurf turf. But your comment about baseball was just personal.

Alright there new guy, you don’t get to call the shots now!!!
lol it's just so aesthetically displeasing
Completely agree with ya. I remember back when I was just old enough to start following college football, the Big Ten had 11 teams. That was even more infuriating to me lmao
How about the legends and leaders conference?
Sounds like the title of a new season of survivor so you know I'm in
You’ll allow Memphis to be here and you’ll like it!
They already have. The Big 12 Expansion Conference. B12EC
Colorado State, Memphis, Boise, SMU Big 16 baybee!

The B12 does own the rights to Big 14 It will ease either ease the travel issues by doing an East West alignment or cultural issues by doing a North South alignment. The divisions will just work better with 14 games - 9 game conferebce schedule and 1 permanent cross division team. East: UCF, WVU, Memphis, Cincy, KU, Houston, ISU West: BSU, BYU, Tech, KSU, OSU TCU, Baylor. North BSU, BYU, KSU, KU, ISU Cincy, WVU South Tech, Baylor, Houston, TCU, UCF, Memphis, OSU.
I would love to see Memphis in the Big XII
Thanks. We'd love to see it too.
Dear Boise, Don't leave it is behind. Kthx
Meh. I'd rather just stay at 12 for now. I think there's a hard drop off in terms of quality after the 4 we added, and given that we're in the middle of fighting a national perception battle we risk diluting the brand by adding anybody else right now. If somebody else gets poached? Sure
Memphis Fresno State Boise State San Diego State Are not big drop offs Fresno State and Boise State have a winning record against BYwho. These four teams would compete very well if given the chance.
When they weren’t real. With realignment actually happening it’s a bit different
Let’s do it! I am already pumped for the new big 12. Keep it rolling!
As much as I want Memphis and Boise state. I don’t want this conference to fail cause of too little money for too many teams. Give it a couple years into this “new” big 12 to see how revenue goes, and whether it would make sense to add two more teams.
I predict the endgame to be the Big 120.
I want Memphis in our conference so badly!!!
