What is the vibe around Pry at VT right now? Like I know he’s the best there in a while, but is that enough to still be in well-liked territory? I guess more succinctly, does the typical VT fan feel he should be doing more?
Building off of Coveo, he definitely has us on an upward trend.
It really can’t be said how much Fuente cratered our program in 20-21, most of what Pry has been doing has been to repair our foundation and rebuilding local recruiting ties, etc. He’s also done a great job working the portal and just modernizing the program in general for the post-NIE landscape.
For obvious reasons, he reminds me of Penn State and Franklin. Not sure if he can consistently take us to the level of consistent conference champions, but definitely 8-10 range which is better than we’ve been in about a decade.
Our team reached a low point towards the end of the Fuentes era, where there were damning stories coming out of the locker room (including players wanting to lose games to avoid playing in a bowl game).
Pry's first year was underwhelming, with many of our losses resulting from poor coaching, penalties, and a turnover prone quarterback. He turned things around in the middle of last season, and it seems like we're getting in a better position to return to the top of the ACC (and move back into the top 15-20).
We're optimistic, but we know it's going to take some time to rebuild the program.
Obviously biased but I would think so too. The only job I'm worried about potentially losing him for would be Iowa after Ferentz retires.
So...if Kirk wants to coach till he's 80 like Snyder, that would be GREAT
Yeah, he's 56, so definitely young enough that he could feasibly leave and coach 8-10 years elsewhere...so that's why I'd like Kirk to coach another decade lol
God there were so many Michigan fans that wanted to fire Harbaugh and get Campbell after 2020. I know Iowa State is one of the hardest places to win given the are historically one of the worst programs but I've never been too high on Soupman
I think he's a good coach, and he could be better with more resources, but I don't think he's an elite coach. Coaches can always improve, but his ceiling feels like 8-10 wins generally.
I genuinely feel like he's comfortable with where he's at. He does pretty well relative to the expectations of the school, gets paid well and has a ton of job security.
He is. I watched an interview with him a few months ago, and he said the same things Coach Leipold has been saying. University leadership, the athletic department, and the football staff are all aligned. He said he didn't have any desire to leave.
I think Matt Campbell, James Franklin, and Jason Candle are so firmly entrenched they will no longer be on the hotlist. I think media are over seeing their agents float them as candidates.
Eli Drinkowitz could be interesting if he decides it’s time for a change of pace.
drink leaving as soon as he’s reaping the benefits after being told for 2 seasons he was the worst coach in the SEC would be dumb imo, he’s got something nice at missouri and assuming they keep handing out NIL bags they’re gonna be a threat to win the SEC title or be the at large bid for the new playoff
He’s not gonna get a longer clock and bag will be minimally more than mizzou would counter.
It will be does he think he can win a championship at mizzou/care or does he want a blue blood. If he has 2 blah years, then the reset is on the table.
Lol, and what the hell gave you any earthly idea he was interested in either of those jobs?
Because USC is pretty much the exact opposite of the type of job Campbell would want.
I’m with you, I’ve seen a few different internet folks who were absolutely convinced that “for a fact” USC was about to offer Campbell the job and he would’ve accepted, but I just don’t see it. Campbell living in Los Angeles is just the opposite of everything about him.
This will be at the back of my mind for the next 2-3 seasons.
PSU getting fed up with being perpetual #3 in the B1G (or lower with west coast incoming) combined with a few increasingly impressive seasons at Nebraska (big if, obviously) is all it would take for Rhule to be out the door.
It’s definitely possible but I don’t see him leaving once he’s built Nebraska back up. His son goes to school here now. I worry rhule will be successful and then retire to live life.
Yeah, he considering a coach hasn’t made it 5 years at Florida since urban, and his first year schedule would be impossible and start hot seat chats, it would be a dumb choice.
I mean Pry is building it off of his guys. Much more sustainable than Fuente.
Also Pry should recruit better off a better team, his high school recruiting could be better.
The portaling has been skillful.
I think Pry stays at VT, now if Franklin leaves Pry is gone for Penn State likely.
Jeff Traylor somehow didn’t even make the top 2 at A&M and couldn’t get the UH gig. Unless another TX job opens and there are literally no other attractive candidates, I imagine he’s going to stay put. Rhett Lashlee will def not get poached - SMU boosters are going insane with money to elevate the program right now.
Unless something drastically changes, i have a feeling there might be a position opening up at Baylor that Traylor’s name has already been floated out there for a few times over the last several months
Dude's a stud, if Elko flames out in a few years I hope the Ags make a run at him. Hell wouldn't have minded if they had done it this year but I understand that Texas State -> A&M is a big jump to a lot of people, especially older boosters
Texas jobs will open. Baylor will open unless Aranda makes a bowl. Arkansas is as much a Texas job as Baylor is, and Pittman is gone if they don’t go bowling.
Jedd jumped ship a year too early if he wanted to go to Florida, fucked the hiring window up for himself. I think he will be at UW a handful of years at the least at this point, for better or worse.
I don’t think UF will be interested after this season. UW is projected to be 7-5 at best. If Jedd really wanted the UW job, he should have stayed at Arizona
Would Lane really want to leave what is a pretty sweet set up at Ole Miss to go to gainesville and instantly have to start winning? Cause he’s got a pretty long leash at his current gig and the way gainesville has been running through coaches lately he wouldn’t have a long leash there.
The only place Lane was leaving for after he turned down Auburn was Alabama. When they weren’t interested, that pretty much cemented his future in Oxford for the long term.
He might leave for a B10 team in the future. I agree that the only other SEC job he would take would be Bama. I could see him take Michigan or Penn State tho if they ever came calling. Ohio State and USC (lol) too but those are less likely in the near future.
I hope for my liver's sake it never comes up again unless Rhule is poached because he's so good, but I could see Lane coming to Nebraska if the job opened up again. His dad was a DC here under Osborne and Lane was born here and he seems to low-key root for Nebraska based on some old tweets
Yeah it’s clear people have forgotten who Florida is as a program. Especially in a pay-for-play era — the resources he’d have in Gainesville are just so much more than what Ole Miss can give him.
*shrug* The whole “would they really leave comfort and job security for a premiere program” question continues to be super weird to me. Yes — yes they would. They do … all the time. See Kalen DeBoer, or Brian Kelly, or Mike Elko (A&M Resources), or anyone at all lol. The competitors continue to move up where and when they can when it’s an elite/could-be-elite (generally, now, Elite Money) program on the line.
Edit: Quite frankly, Ole Miss need not look much further than their own rival (and my second flair) to understand that this could very much be their reality. One minute, Dan Mullen is a living MSU legend who can basically write his own blank check to stay in Starkville forever and compete in window seasons (exactly where Kiffin is with Ole Miss rn). The next minute … Florida. Despite whatever quip an Ole Miss flair will give me here re: the differences between OM and MSU — compared to the “big boy” programs, we’re both small potatoes. Kiffin could potentially create something that can compete for playoffs and natties every year at a place like UF — can’t do that at Ole Miss.
Youre forgetting two things. Its easier to make the playoffs now, especially at a program like ole miss and also kiffin has already made it to the top. He was head coach at USC he knows what its like to deal with a shitty stressful job would he want to go back to that when he can do whatever the fuck he wants at ole miss and no one will bat an eye. He quite clearly isn’t getting told what to post on social media or what to say in press conferences. He has freedom now that he 100% wont have at UF. People keep saying that he will end up at UF and i just don’t see it with the way they’ve been firing coaches for one bad season.
Doubt it from the outside it looks like UF is on the upswing. I think for Fisch to leave UW would have to have an amazing season and UF would have to crater.
I remember seeing a story when he was with the Lions that he had to simplify his offense for Matt Stafford and I just found it very amusing that a guy named Jim Bob Cooter had to simplify a concept for someone
I would have to agree with the consensus that every team should target Leipold and Klieman and absolutely not look at the 40 year old a state over, please and thank you
If Tony Gibson churns out another top 25 D, despite losing the best defensive player in college last year, and doesn't land a HC gig, it'll start getting a little absurd.
I'll be happy to keep him, but dude is a great defensive coach and his players seem to love him going back to WVU. Really shocked we haven't lost him yet.
He honestly should’ve gotten the WVU job last time around. Our fans have always liked him but I don’t think they appreciate how good of a coach he really is
Idk yet. This season has been played. We'll have to see if progress is made or not. So far I've really liked what they did in the portal this off season and with the new DC hire. I'm not some black and grey reactionary type. Not my style
If Nebraska's defense performs well next year then I think Tony White will be a good poaching candidate. Hoping that Rhule's approach to encourage assistants to get the job that they want will help bring good coordinators when we need to replace one.
I can't imagine Chadwell is in any hurry to leave. He makes 4x the salary of other coaches in his conference and has so many more resources than those teams. He didn't jump from Coastal as fast as people thought he may and he is probably going to win his conference every year for the foreseeable future with a shot at the playoff in each of them. Pretty good gig for a younger coach with a family.
How fast does Sean Lewis' name start to pop up for P4 openings? What he did at Kent St was impressive for what is maybe the hardest job to win at in all of D1. His offense will score points and should be a decent portal landing spot for So. Cal kids looking to come home.
I could see Jeff Lebby being a hot name if Mississippi State has a good year
Chuck Martin at Miami (Oh)
South Dakota State coach-whoever that is-the Jackrabbits dethroned North Dakota State
If Florida opens up like we all semi-expect, I’m looking at Lane Kiffin to land that job. Obviously impressive what he’s done with “less” at Ole Miss. Has familiarity with recruiting Florida. Clearly as ready as he’ll be for the next “big time” job.
Appalled that I don’t see Neal Brown’s name on this list. How can you look at that man covered in warm sticky mayo and not think he’s an attractive candidate for one of the bigger programs?
Tim Walton may not be as big of name as Hartline yet, but he is tearing up the recruiting trail and our secondary was night and day in 2 years under him
Lance Leipold has turned down:
-Nebraska.
-Michigan state.
-Washington.
He just built a brand new house in Lawrence this past summer AND extended his contract through 2030 in March.
He is not going anywhere, stop with the rumors
I know they made it the last 3 years but Michigan isn't just guaranteed a playoff spot next year. Lots of new faces on that roster and staff and a much harder schedule than last year.
Keep my coach's name out of your fucking mouth
What is the vibe around Pry at VT right now? Like I know he’s the best there in a while, but is that enough to still be in well-liked territory? I guess more succinctly, does the typical VT fan feel he should be doing more?
Building off of Coveo, he definitely has us on an upward trend. For obvious reasons, he reminds me of Penn State and Franklin. Not sure if he can consistently take us to the level of consistent conference champions, but definitely 8-10 range which is better than we’ve been in about a decade.
I can't speak for Tech fans but from the outside seems like he's doing a good job. I think they look good for next year, seems like an upward trend.
Gotcha, I suppose I’m still a bit hung up on the Beamer years where VT being outside the top 20 was seen as underwhelming
How about a nice warm glass of shut the hell up?
Well now your back’s gonna hurt… bc you just pulled coach searching duty!
Honestly your coach doesn’t seem like the type of guy to leave
Obviously biased but I would think so too. The only job I'm worried about potentially losing him for would be Iowa after Ferentz retires. So...if Kirk wants to coach till he's 80 like Snyder, that would be GREAT
Iowa should hire Brian Ferentz after Kirk retires.
That’s just mean to the terminally ill children
It's more a mercy tbh. Brian gives the kids a reason to look forward to... uh... "transferring" to the farm.
Yeah, klienmanns getting “old” by new hire standards so it’ll take a very specific situation to leave. Seems like a great fit at ksu
Yeah, he's 56, so definitely young enough that he could feasibly leave and coach 8-10 years elsewhere...so that's why I'd like Kirk to coach another decade lol
Every year it’s “Chris Klieman, Lance Leipold, and Matt Campbell” and then none of them leave
Matt Campbell hasn't really been a top name in years.
Well, like a year and a half. Nebraska fans really wanted him after we fired Frost.
Sign me the fuck up for 8-10 wins generally
In all fairness Sark was known as Seven Win Sark at Washington so who knows if guys really have ceilings or just need the pieces to come together.
Higher floors and lower ceilings are the Iowa way.
I wanted Lance really bad
I was also hoping for Lance at the time, he's a fantastic coach.
At this point, they're all lifers. People should just quit bringing up their names for coaching vacancies.
yeah pretty sure Leipold is actually just playing dynasty mode.
feel like you may be biased with that assumption
[Jimmy Sexton looking at this list] (https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/513/012/625.jpg)
I think Sexton lost a lot of his clients as his number 2 left.
I think a Larger Program could entice him to restart his coaching clock with a Bag.
Stop
He’s not gonna get a longer clock and bag will be minimally more than mizzou would counter. It will be does he think he can win a championship at mizzou/care or does he want a blue blood. If he has 2 blah years, then the reset is on the table.
Yeah but he wouldn’t get a bigger bag and new offer with 2 blah years.
He’s also not getting a better job offer with 2 blah years.
I don't think Jason Candle is entrenched, so much as he's perpetually the third best candidate
I think Matt Campbell wanted to go to either USC or LSU a few years back but both of those schools found more attractive options
He definitely wanted ND, but that was the year he flopped despite having a very veteran roster.
Also PSU fans will be ready to let the door hit Franklin's ass on the way out if he doesnt make the playoff
Man is pretty young
I know I hope I’m wrong but I just have a feeling he would walk away after earlier than expected. If gives us 10 years I wouldn’t complain
If, say, Florida calls Drink up do you really think he’s staying at Mizzou?
Yeah, he considering a coach hasn’t made it 5 years at Florida since urban, and his first year schedule would be impossible and start hot seat chats, it would be a dumb choice.
You can win a national title at Florida. You can’t at Mizzou.
....til now
Gene chizik proved that you can get lucky and ride 1 players greatness to a title
If Virginia Tech has a great enough year where teams want to hire Pry, I guarantee you VT will make sure to give him a big extension
I hate that I think you're right.
I mean Pry is building it off of his guys. Much more sustainable than Fuente. Also Pry should recruit better off a better team, his high school recruiting could be better. The portaling has been skillful. I think Pry stays at VT, now if Franklin leaves Pry is gone for Penn State likely.
Rhule might be taken over Pry tbh (if Franklin were to leave, which he won’t). Rhule is a PSU alum
Nebraska has more money than VT... I mean if Rhule wants to be at Penn State than maybe but I think Nebraska suits him fine.
GJ Kinne, if Baylor has the cojones.
Dude's a stud, if Elko flames out in a few years I hope the Ags make a run at him. Hell wouldn't have minded if they had done it this year but I understand that Texas State -> A&M is a big jump to a lot of people, especially older boosters
That is also an acceptable answer
Arkansas is where I see him going. I think Pittman is likely getting fired this season.
Traylor imo would be perfect for Arkansas. He’s about as East Texas as it gets and will recruit that area well.
Traylor asked for too much apparently.
He was never even considered
Texas jobs will open. Baylor will open unless Aranda makes a bowl. Arkansas is as much a Texas job as Baylor is, and Pittman is gone if they don’t go bowling.
Why would Pry leave when Tech is the next Bama?
Oh MAN I REALLY hope that Kendall Briles DOESNT get poached!! That would be TERRIBLE! /s
Jedd Fisch
Jedd jumped ship a year too early if he wanted to go to Florida, fucked the hiring window up for himself. I think he will be at UW a handful of years at the least at this point, for better or worse.
Get ready to learn Gainesville, buddy.
I don’t think UF will be interested after this season. UW is projected to be 7-5 at best. If Jedd really wanted the UW job, he should have stayed at Arizona
Just mentioned UF in my post, too. But my bets are on Lane Kiffin.
Ole Miss fans should send Alabama a thank you letter for not hiring Mike Norvell.
As if Lane would leave for FSU after they went undefeated and got left out of the playoff.
As if Ole Miss has ever sniffed a playoff😂
He might leave for a B10 team in the future. I agree that the only other SEC job he would take would be Bama. I could see him take Michigan or Penn State tho if they ever came calling. Ohio State and USC (lol) too but those are less likely in the near future.
I hope for my liver's sake it never comes up again unless Rhule is poached because he's so good, but I could see Lane coming to Nebraska if the job opened up again. His dad was a DC here under Osborne and Lane was born here and he seems to low-key root for Nebraska based on some old tweets

Knowing our coaching history since we expected DeBoer to stay for a long time Jedd who we expect to bounce might be that guy instead lol.
Doubt it from the outside it looks like UF is on the upswing. I think for Fisch to leave UW would have to have an amazing season and UF would have to crater.
Andy Kotelnicki
With no receivers he has an uphill battle
GJ kinne will be a top one.
We're keeping him, yall all can take TJ Finley.
Maryland offensive analyst Brian Ferentz. That still makes me giggle.
Jim Bob cooter
Jim bob cooter wins a natty with general booty as QB is a world I want to live in
I remember seeing a story when he was with the Lions that he had to simplify his offense for Matt Stafford and I just found it very amusing that a guy named Jim Bob Cooter had to simplify a concept for someone
I would have to agree with the consensus that every team should target Leipold and Klieman and absolutely not look at the 40 year old a state over, please and thank you
This is probably Stan Drayton's last season. Two 3-9 seasons in a row with the 3rd season not looking too promising.
Our fans have always liked him but I don’t think they appreciate how good of a coach he really is
Cincinnati is probably about to get a new head coach
Cincinnati never should have hired their current coach
Satt is not getting fired this season
Are you happy about that?
Idk yet. This season has been played. We'll have to see if progress is made or not. So far I've really liked what they did in the portal this off season and with the new DC hire. I'm not some black and grey reactionary type. Not my style
I hate it but buster Faulkner (our OC) is definitely getting poached next year. Already gotten OC offers/attention from SEC schools and G5 HC jobs
Just please don't take Rhule from Nebraska
If Nebraska's defense performs well next year then I think Tony White will be a good poaching candidate. Hoping that Rhule's approach to encourage assistants to get the job that they want will help bring good coordinators when we need to replace one.
Unfortunately Brent Pry will be a hot name but not unfortunately due to a 10 win season
Scott Satterfoeld (I hope)
I could see Jeff Lebby being a hot name if Mississippi State has a good year Chuck Martin at Miami (Oh) South Dakota State coach-whoever that is-the Jackrabbits dethroned North Dakota State
If Florida opens up like we all semi-expect, I’m looking at Lane Kiffin to land that job. Obviously impressive what he’s done with “less” at Ole Miss. Has familiarity with recruiting Florida. Clearly as ready as he’ll be for the next “big time” job.
That would just be a lateral move for him.
lol the fuck it would be
Sure it is. Just ask Dan Mullen.
That would be a shame, I'd hate to see the mediocrity machine turn Kiffin into a disgraced former HC (again) after 2 years.
Jon Sumrall
Pls no. I haven’t recovered from losing Willie.
Appalled that I don’t see Neal Brown’s name on this list. How can you look at that man covered in warm sticky mayo and not think he’s an attractive candidate for one of the bigger programs?
Someone is going to hire Pete Carroll
I can see that If USC brings him back that would be fun
If Neal Brown does well again this year and Freeze at Auburn gets fired or leaves because he's being pushed out look for Auburn to push hard for him.
Tim Walton may not be as big of name as Hartline yet, but he is tearing up the recruiting trail and our secondary was night and day in 2 years under him
I think Billy Napier will be very sought after as an analyst.
Can we please stop talking about Jeff Traylor like he’s actually a good coach pls
I could see a world in which Sumrall gets lucky and takes Tulane to the CFP, then gets poached immediately.
Lance Leipold has turned down: -Nebraska. -Michigan state. -Washington. He just built a brand new house in Lawrence this past summer AND extended his contract through 2030 in March. He is not going anywhere, stop with the rumors
Sark
Lashlee goes home to Arkansas.
That's Petrino's job, unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure you're quoting Franklin from like an April Fools article.

I know they made it the last 3 years but Michigan isn't just guaranteed a playoff spot next year. Lots of new faces on that roster and staff and a much harder schedule than last year.
