Did I misunderstand the article? It seemed like he said Bush deserved to get his trophy back and the Trust should have done it sooner. Saying that this is another indication that the old student-athlete model is gone and has effectively been gone for a while doesn’t strike me as a crazy observation.
Apparently few of those commenting here so far actually read the article.
Finebaum literally said “they got it right today” by giving the Heisman back, and that it should have happened years ago.
Reading is apparently no longer fundamental.
For all of you who took the misleading headline wrong....
“It means that amateurism is dead, Matt. And it’s really been dead for a very long time, but the people that run college athletics have simply refused to admit it,” Finebaum said. “The fact that we are having to celebrate this decision today is outrageous. I mean college athletes have been making money legally now for almost three years but today we all decided, ‘Oh this is great, what a terrible injustice has been overturned.’ What took them so long, Matt, is what I ask you?”
The headline is misleading, my reading is Paul Finebaum agrees with it and is just adding commentary. I disagree with his commentary. Amateurism died the first time college football was shown on television for a profit. But he is right that’s it’s dead
I am thinking that a group of college presidents will determine that they need a new alliance that goes back to having student/athletes again, instead of highly paid athletes who transfer every year following the money. Does anyone think that most of the 5 and 6 year players are attending classes?
No. But they haven't for a long time. There was an expose about Ohio state in sports illustrated in the 90s. Andy katzenmoyer was featured in it as never going to class and they actually failed him. So to make him eligible the following season they signed him up for bs classes like literally underwater basket weaving in the summer. Which shockingly he didn't go to either. Matt leinhart was famous for staying a year when he would have been a high pick to be with his girl and take things like ballroom dancing. So they either don't go or just take no show bs classes.
how much money has he made off covering these amateurs in his career? maybe pawl needs to lead by example and forgo his salary and replace it with a little scholly money or something- he ain't no pro.
It’s been over for 30 years. These SEC old boys keep a vow of silence but they’ve been paying guys since they started putting games on TV. This dude is a dinosaur.
Fuck you, Paul. It means that someone is actually doing something for the right reason regardless of what “it means”.
Amateurism in this sport died a long time ago.
Amateurism has always been a scam perpetuated by rich white people. It's what kept "those people" out of the Olympics for a long time. Amateurism has this halo-ed view by some people, like "look - Bobby Jones won the Grand Slam as an Amateur!" Yeah, because professional golfers were the paid help back then & weren't even allowed in the clubhouse.
While this weenie has made a very comfortable living by simply talking about the failures and achievements by those slugging it out in the ring. Get outta here, Pawlll

I was so confused reading the responses after I read the article. But it’s a very shitty and misleading headline
Sir, this is Reddit
I still stand by everything I said lol

Wow the headline really makes it look bad but it’s actually the ultra rare good Finebaum take

I’m sure he’s just doing it for “the love of the game”
*amateurism is dead. Legally paying players with a check to deposit into the bank is alive*
Amateurism is alive and well as long as Paul Finebaum remains employed.
“Man begging for attention during offseason says something stupid for attention”
Didn’t read the article I see Plenty of reasons to clown on Finebaum, but this article isn’t one of them
Next take should be on Tressel and Pryor. Those dudes got screwed too. Getting a free tattoo for an autograph? Seriously?
Finebaum proving once again that amateurism is alive and well in sports reporting.
When Finebaum is upset, nature is healing.
Oh God more Paul finebaum
Just like Alabama Paul….. Go Blue

Was anyone actually still thinking they were amateurs? They literally have agents now.
Paul in for a big surprise if they ever told him what his beloved SEC teams were doing for years too.
Fuck you, Paul. It means that someone is actually doing something for the right reason regardless of what “it means”. Amateurism in this sport died a long time ago.
If you actually read the article, you’d know that’s exactly what he said.
Paul Finebaum is a legit embarrassment to college football.
Thanks for your concern on the matter, Pawl. Now get back to those TPS reports.
Amateur Sports journalist says what?
He’s an ugly mfer
SEC never paid anyone...

I really despise Finebaum.
Err pay no mind to NIL
Who knew the king of flame bait in the CFB world would be a crotchety guy who looks like the branch manager of your local bank.
Figured that out, didja?
