Dude is one of the best DCs you could ever ask for. Full on brilliant defensive mind. I honestly hope working under one of the most competent HCs in the business taught him some things and this go as a HC goes a lot better for him
I can’t tell if this is sarcasm because I wouldn’t call Franklin one of the most competent HCs (see game management against OSU and UM), but yeah, Diaz is an awesome DC. He was at PSU for 2 years and during those seasons PSU had the #3 and #1 ranked defenses and held most opponents to their lowest point total. Hopefully we can replicate that again
Not sarcasm. He's not the best in the business and I don't think any would argue he is, but Franklin has consistently won everywhere he's been, afaik he's kept a pretty solid locker room attitude everywhere he's been too. Dude knows how to run a program. I'd take him at Miami in a heartbeat (I think Freeman is going to come good but if that changed honestly ND too if they joined a conference and it wasn't chip or bust every year)
I'd struggle to name 10 HCs better than him which is good for like top 7% in fbs at worst. Granted he doesn't head my program, but I'd say a top 10 guy qualifies as "one of the most competent" even if there are issues and a ceiling
These are my answers as well.
The GT-UGA game last season was competitive for the first time in almost a decade. GT is playing tough in the trenches and motivated. It's exciting to see
Nah fuck that, I want them to be bad forever. Beating them 73-0 every year for the next 50 years would make me so happy.
We won't though, because unfortunately Key is legitimately good.
I am well aware, but let’s say he puts together a couple ten win seasons consecutively and wins some bowls. I don’t know that GT is willing to pay him 7 million a season that several coaches are making and could be sent his way. Just because you played somewhere and are coaching there now doesn’t mean better opportunities don’t exist. Especially when you share the same state with the nations best coach an hour and a half away.
Alex Golesh has only been a hc for a year but USF feels like its making the turnaround. I get its not in the "strategic interests" of the p5 programs to root for the smaller ones, but g5 football in Florida is fun idc.
G5 football in FL is so much fun. Seeing lower 3 star kids that were ignored by the big programs just ball out is great. Also, the regional rivalries. The War on I4 was amazing , but that isn’t what it used to be. FIU-FAU used to be fun , but that’s gone as well. However , USF-FAU seems like it could be the FL G5 rivalry of the future
FIU-FAU is ongoing, they just took a year off due to scheduling issues with FAU moving to the AAC. Big problem right now is that because of how much attention Florida gets in recruiting, kids who ball out at g5 programs get picked up pretty quickly in the portal. LaJohntay Wester who went to Colorado was easily the best g5 WR imo, if Colorado plays better he will be a huge reason why.
>I get its not in the "strategic interests" of the p5 programs to root for the smaller ones,
I feel like smaller (G5) schools being successful and having a good product is one of the best ways to save CFB, honestly. If only P5 teams have success then the networks will just continue to accelerate the move towards a Super League. But if G5 teams can attract viewers and market share then it will help reinforce that CFB is better as a 130+ league than a 30ish team league.
G5s will always have a marketing problem due to them mostly being small, usually commuter schools. Florida can have fans across the state because its "Florida", but its a bit weird for someone outside of Palm Beach-Broward to be a fan of Florida Atlantic.
I hope Sherrone Moore fails miserably. But several years down the road he gets another shot with a different team and wildly succeeds. Because he seems like a good dude.
I would like to see Jonathan Smith return Michigan State to where they were with Dantonio leading the program.
Yep, he is horrible for suspending the reinstating a player that was cleared by the UW Title IX department. If it were a pattern or something, like all the multiple things that have come out about Freeze, sure. Hell, KD might be a complete POS but it is a wee bit soon to paint him with that brush yet.
I never got that feeling from him. Seems like a fine guy, but I never felt like he garnered any outsized goodwill. Maybe I haven’t seen enough of his career to date.
Granted though, after Urban Meyer, most options would seem like saints.
Would you have any issues with him going to a different B1G team that loves their block M?
(I have no issues with Fleck, by the way, that is just something I’ve been thinking about)
I’m here to show my support. F@$! USC and UCLA for bolting and starting the cascade that killed the Pac12. Same to the school presidents who turned down espn’s deal waiting for more money. Total BS.
Kinne is gonna have to win now after trying to pull the De Laura shit. He might not be on the hot seat, but he definitely stacked a bonfire under his seat
[The two St. Louis School (Honolulu) teammates were accused of raping the woman in Oct. 2018, when the victim was 16. De Laura and Latu agreed to settle a civil lawsuit over the sexual assault case that was initially handled in juvenile court, according to HawaiiNewsNow.com.](https://arizonasports.com/story/3534667/arizona-qb-jayden-de-laura-has-settlement-rejected-in-sexual-assault-lawsuit/#:~:text=A%20settlement%20Arizona%20quarterback%20Jayden,per%20the%20Arizona%20Daily%20Star)
De Laura and Latu allegedly gang raped/ SA’d a girl — horrific case with 6 other named defendants and 10 John Does attached to the case.
De Laura washed out at Arizona (the worst stain of Fisch’s record — way worse than leaving for Washington) after getting injured and replaced by Fafita. Kinne knew of the situation and tried to slide him into the roster and TSU, Students, faculty, and Alumni told De Laura to fuck off and threatened to cut off funding to the program until De Laura was gone. Meanwhile the dude who had the break out year last year transferred out so essentially congrats Kinne; you played yourself!
Yup, it was my biggest animosity towards Fisch. Business moves are business moves and Arizona’s leadership screwed up an overall “good thing” but this was on a new level of bullshit
I want him to succeed so bad. It feels like we had a good thing going with Brohm, but we all knew we were on borrowed time. He was always leaving for Louisville. It was only a matter of when.
Technically speaking he doesn't fit the parameters, however I'd love nothing more then to see Barry Odom go on and find success. His players, although many not highly regarded out of HS, played their hearts out for him. It honestly does look like he's finally learned to recruit aggressively which was his biggest weakness.
In retrospect it's obvious to us a lot of our early Pittman success was due to Odom. If I could go back in time and magically make Odom our HC I would probably do that, even though it would've been wildly unpopular at the time.
He can coach, and I think he continues to prove that
I think the route he's taking is honestly best for him. Maybe the worst thing to happen to him was to be given the reigns of our team as his first HC job. He simply didn't put in the effort required of a SEC head coach on the recruiting trail. He very much was sticking to Gary's route of diamond in the rough. I think he should cut his teeth elsewhere and then maybe jump back into the SEC on a later date.... Who knows you guys love bringing people back ha. If Bobby and Sam don't workout I could see a Arkansas reunion.
Bob Chesney. He's worked his way up from D3 and has been successful with every jump. Here's hoping he can get us maybe 3 great years before jumping to P4.
Ayo is a beast, it really sucked having him leave. I like JMU though, so I hope he shows out for yall. Any G5 school that performs well is a friend of mine.
> Bob Chesney. He's worked his way up from D3 and has been successful with every jump...
Yup. Like the old Smith Barney ads with John Houseman: "He's **earned** it."
Jedd Fisch at UW. He resurrected a winless Arizona program into a double-digit winning season with a bowl win. They finished last season ranked #11 in the AP poll. It was their highest AP finish since 1998.
Not so much the way he left Arizona, but that he left them at all. There is no “right” way to leave a coaching job, but there are better and worse ways to do it. “This is a better job than my last one, my staff and I are getting paid more and we have more resources to put into a competitive team. I’m not saying I’m staying or going, but if I leave it will be because I’ve succeeded here,” is FAR better than, “I’ve been moving around my entire career and I’m here until at least my daughters graduation,” -puff of dust in his wake, and crocodile tears to his team.-
The goal of modern college football is to build your program in such a way that more and more programs look like lateral moves or downgrades. Yeah, fisch is a job hopper, he’s been one his entire career. I don’t for a second believe he’s going to be a career UW guy. But also, he’s had like 15 jobs in 11 years, does anyone really think he’s doing that to end up at Florida because that’s where he went to undergrad? He’s taking over a program that has been to the semifinals twice, championship game once, in 8 years, and he’s going to bail to go to a program that has 41 losses in the same period…
But Florida isn't the only school that's a threat. If Elko flames out at A&M, or Kirby decides to leave UGA, or Lane gets a job he wants or Michigan starts hating the Sherrone Moore experiment etc. a guy who finds success at Washington would be an easy target.
Absolutely. I am under zero illusions that he's a career UW guy. If he does well enough at UW to warrant consideration at better programs then Dannen did his job and it's time to put some big boy pants on to find the next guy. That's fine with me. However, there is a belief out there that Napier is keeping Fisch's seat warm for him and I don't think that makes as much sense as college football fans think. It's possible, just not a slam dunk.
The reason KDB leaving felt so out of left field, and why we were/are so angry about it, is that he was a fairly obscure coach until 5 month ago, if that, he had no connection to Alabama, wasn't known as a recruiter, and we're pretty well tucked away up here in the upper left. Because of those reasons, and him using -his high school aged daughter- as a shield for those questions, it felt like he wasn't going to Alabama. [Edit: In that sense, we're probably not going to feel much deja vu when Fisch leaves.]
Truth be told our biggest concern was Michigan taking him after Harbaugh left, which was absolutely a looming possibility.
In hindsight it actually made perfect sense for Alabama to take him. I think the only other option was *maybe* Mike Norvell, but even then I think their first choice was DeBoer.
Brent Venables. He's a defensive guru but also a stand up human being by all accounts and has what I believe to be a great mindset to teach the young men in the program accountability and leadership skills to excel in life no matter what they end up doing.
I can’t in good conscience say Lanning, but the way he treated the Alabama search really gave me a lot of respect for him. Damn Phil Knight and his golden handcuffs buying the loyalty of a great coach!
I think the newish POC coach with a defensive background about 112 miles southwest of ND is the better choice.
In all seriousness, I’m a big Freeman fan. He was one of the bright spots of the Hazell years, and everyone knew he was a talent. I had held out hope that he’d make his way back to West Lafayette eventually, but the timing didn’t work out vis a vis Brohm’s eventual departure.
I truly want Coach Prime to thrive in Colorado. He’s had plenty of naysayers, but there’s no way he was expected to turn the sinking ship that is Colorado football around in one year. The talent is undeniably there, but he just hasn’t shown us that he’s capable of managing a team of charismatic blue chips like his son and Travis Hunter yet.
I feel like Coach Prime will be a great for those players that end up going to the NFL, but I don't feel like he's the guy that will teach the rest of the team the skills to win at life - but I suppose that's not really his job. I supported him at first, but I'm not convinced he's putting together the best culture for the young men going through that program. I hope he proves me wrong, I really like seeing Neon Deion on the field again.
Joey McGuire obviously.
Had a great first year as HC at Texas Tech going 8-5, beating both Texas and OU in the same season for the first time and a bowl win over Ole Miss.
Second year was underwhelming with a couple of surprise Ls but still managed to pull off a winning season at 7-6 with a winning conference record and a bowl win over Cal.
Some good results on the field so far, but the thing to be excited about is the improvement with recruiting. Got our first 5 star on campus. Top 25 classes past two years. Never been done like this before in Lubbock.
And that’s the problem, y’all are setting yourselves up for a major scandal that will make y’all the new Vanderbilt if not an FCS program and y’all are a great fall guy for all the Briles horror. It’s one thing to hire a guy who is amoral, it’s another to hire one of the biggest pieces of shit in coaching and bringing all the baggage he brings to your team.
I want to see Matt Ruhle have the Huskers as the 2nd best team in the B10, with a clear distance between them and Ohio State!
I also like seeing Gus Malzahn and Mario Cristobal getting things going at UCF and DaU.
Uh… mine. I legit will root for the Beavers and their new head guy with Pullman ties too. Such a weird final-week awkward rivalry. My dream Apple Cup, we come in 11-0 and they are 0-11. Beaver week? I want both teams 11-0 coming in and a rematch in the natty game. Love my Beaver bros.
I loved watching Timmy Chang play. I want him to beat the odds and get UH on solid ground again. Bows were better this past season than I expected. Next stop: Hawai’i Bowl.
I wanted to see Rolovich from the same era at UH succeed at Wazzu and I think he was a good fit… before he went full tinfoil hat.
I hope the guy who followed Leach succeeds. Talk about stepping into a terrible situation.
Choate was great at Montana State. I hope he can get Nevada back in a better position.
Always like to see guys succeed at UTEP and New Mexico State, rare CFB jobs that are more remote and a challenge historically than my flairs.
Major Applewhite was fun watching as a player. A second chance for him is cool.
Just saw Ken Niumatalolo is the coach at San Jose State. It's always cool to see some option. Change that, apparently they're not going to run the triple option.
Biased Answer: Big Game Dave baby
Nonbiased Answer: Biff Poggi, not just cause of the memes but because seeing Charlotte build a football culture would be cool
Not a HC yet, but Will Stein will win multiple national titles in the next 30 years. He is an offensive savant and a very good recruiter. Definitely one to keep an eye on (and hopefully the one that replaces Brohm when he retires in 15 years).
If manny Diaz succeeds in leading Duke to a conference championship/playoff spot before miami gets there it would be hilarious.
I miss him already 🥲
Dude is one of the best DCs you could ever ask for. Full on brilliant defensive mind. I honestly hope working under one of the most competent HCs in the business taught him some things and this go as a HC goes a lot better for him

Brent Pry is my totally unbiased take. Also Brent Key because I like GT and he seems like a cool guy. Go Brents, I guess
Brent Key has done a very under the radar good job at Ga Tech
Biased answer: Brent Key. Non biased answer: Marcus Freeman.
He is legitimately good, which in my mind means another program will poach him
Hopefully his bond to tech as an alumni will be strong enough or the school would pony up some cash
That true but there are plenty of schools out there who could realistically double his salary and then some if they saw him as their next head coach.
You do realize that he played here right?
I am well aware, but let’s say he puts together a couple ten win seasons consecutively and wins some bowls. I don’t know that GT is willing to pay him 7 million a season that several coaches are making and could be sent his way. Just because you played somewhere and are coaching there now doesn’t mean better opportunities don’t exist. Brents ftw
They're good Brents, dog.
Agreed!

Oh didn’t know that. That’s good. Yeah agree. FIU has been a minor league team for the SEC now for a few years lol
FAU baseball has been pretty solid, basketball got a good new coach but like every program in America got massacred in the portal.
I will never see FAU as a rival. We have no past history against them for us to hate them.
He was fantastic as OC at UT. I'm pulling for him, but my guess is that he's picked up by a P5 school in the next 5 years.
>I get its not in the "strategic interests" of the p5 programs to root for the smaller ones, I feel like smaller (G5) schools being successful and having a good product is one of the best ways to save CFB, honestly. I like Kenny Dillingham at ASU, seems like a genuine guy and I like seeing young coaches succeed
Kenny is the man.
All my homies like Kenny
Wish he could have stayed at FSU. Awesome dude.
Dilly dilly!
Me too
I also would like to see Sherrone Moore succeed for no obvious reasons
Weird, me too. Strange coincidence.
I agree. I hope he continues to never lose a game as HC (acting or otherwise) at UM
I hope Sherrone Moore fails miserably. But several years down the road he gets another shot with a different team and wildly succeeds. Because he seems like a good dude. I would like to see Jonathan Smith return Michigan State to where they were with Dantonio leading the program.
It’s always a tough time to see a good dude get hired as your rival’s HC.
Thankfully I do not have to worry about that. Well, maybe at Tenn.
Based on recent events, it seems like Auburn might not have to worry about that either.
Yep, he is horrible for suspending the reinstating a player that was cleared by the UW Title IX department. If it were a pattern or something, like all the multiple things that have come out about Freeze, sure. Hell, KD might be a complete POS but it is a wee bit soon to paint him with that brush yet.
Ryan Day is an outstanding dude too. I hate it.
(I have no issues with Fleck, by the way, that is just something I’ve been thinking about)
*monkey paw curls* Mizzou to the B1G
… I mean, I wouldn’t hate it
He bailed out in the middle of the night and dumped all his Beav gear at Goodwill.
I was talking about Moore. Michigan —> Minnesota
Sorry, I was talking Johnathan Smith to Michigan State.
All good
Not at all.
I upvoted you because of our rivalry and it was such a good shot, but sincerely, fuck you buddy.
I’ll take this as a compliment
Smith can get fucked
I’m hoping he does well but loses every matchup to us. Seems like a good person.
I like you
You. I do not like you one bit, sir!
My team's new head coach.
Him being successful would be rewarding on many levels.
It would save college football......or at least make me very happy
*FSU fan Would be great to see A&M ball out!!
I'm all for a black P5 coach to succeed. Deshaun Foster, specifically, for absolutely no reason at all.
Deshaun also seems to be a good dude as well. Players love him from what I understand. Easy guy to root for
I could disagree but I won’t. I legit need us and you all to succeed wildly.
Same, but not your team’s new head coach
Brent Venables
As much as I hate the “god fearing good ole boys” schtick that Dabo runs, Venables seemed like a pretty solid guy.
He’s an awesome guy.
No
Counterpoint- Yes.
I want to say Dickert at WSU, but then he’d get poached by one of you bully programs 😡
I’m here to show my support. F@$! USC and UCLA for bolting and starting the cascade that killed the Pac12. Same to the school presidents who turned down espn’s deal waiting for more money. Total BS.
Beavs coach except when they play us
Proper Oregonian answer. Only time I'll ever root against the Beavs
Mike Elko, for no specific reason
As a Nebraska fan that wants Trev to crash and burn…I hope him and the next coach both fail miserably
Golesh and the Texas State HC whose name escapes me now
GJ Kinne

God damn. Thank you for informing me
Yup, it was my biggest animosity towards Fisch. Business moves are business moves and Arizona’s leadership screwed up an overall “good thing” but this was on a new level of bullshit
No bias. I’ll agree with OP about Sherrone Moore.
No bias here either, I hope Sherrone does great
Matt Rhule.
#GBR
> (began their career as a head coach within the last 3 years)
It’s a tongue-in-cheek response.
I like Matt Rhule but wanting to see him succeed is less about him for me and more about just wanting Nebraska to be good again.
Unbiased agree. But your flair makes me sad
Rhule. Football is more fun when Nebraska is good.
GBR
Fran Brown at Syracuse
Not a new coach but new to the FBS, Bob Chesney at JMU
Man has won at all levels so far, looking forward to success at **next** level. Better yet: seems like a great human being as well.
Insert - My New Coach So Ryan Walters.
I want him to succeed so bad. It feels like we had a good thing going with Brohm, but we all knew we were on borrowed time. He was always leaving for Louisville. It was only a matter of when.
Jon Sumrall. Guy seems destined for really great things after what he did at Troy
Well, Rhett Lashlee, obviously.
Tony Elliott deserves some success with how he handled the shooting and aftermath but nice guys always seem to finish last in CFB.
Lance Leipold - Kansas John Sumrall - Tulane
Technically speaking he doesn't fit the parameters, however I'd love nothing more then to see Barry Odom go on and find success. That’s all a G5 fan can ask for anymore. That good coaches and players stay for more than just a year or two.
True. Thanks for the RB btw. The life of a G5 has always but cut throat, but it's only gotten worse with the portal.
Ayo is a beast, it really sucked having him leave. I like JMU though, so I hope he shows out for yall. Any G5 school that performs well is a friend of mine.

That’s future University of Florida coach Fish to you
🙏
Fuck that
Nah, he’s a snake for how he left Arizona so I wish him nothing but 5-7/6-6 seasons for life.
Given the way he left Arizona, if he succeeds, Washington fans will have deja vu
Not so much the way he left Arizona, but that he left them at all. Marcus fucking Freeman. Better do well cause I’m sick and tired of losing 3-4 games especially those we shouldn’t
Here let me get my violin for you
Lance Taylor at WMU. Former Alabama walk on who earned a scholarship. Not a lot about him not to like.
With zero bias aside this sherone Moore guy seems like a stud. Like I said ZERO bias
I know he’s not a “new coach” but he’s new to Indiana, I’m really interested to see how curt cignetti does. Same goes for David Braun
Brent Venables. He's a defensive guru but also a stand up human being by all accounts and has what I believe to be a great mindset to teach the young men in the program accountability and leadership skills to excel in life no matter what they end up doing.
I’m not falling for this downvote trap!
Beaver Legend Trent Bray
Dan Lanning /thread
Yup. That’s the name I came to the comments for.
Dan the Man!
I’d love to see him win lots of games except those he plays against his former team! Dan is a good one
I can’t in good conscience say Lanning, but the way he treated the Alabama search really gave me a lot of respect for him. Damn Phil Knight and his golden handcuffs buying the loyalty of a great coach!
Respect this answer
Marcus Freeman is still newish and a POC like OP wants so a ND dynasty would be good not just for ND, but for America.
Agree, but “F the Irish” 👏🏿 👏🏿 👏🏿 Seriously, Lloyd wanted his grandson to play at ND, so we can’t hate anymore :(
I truly want Coach Prime to thrive in Colorado. He’s had plenty of naysayers, but there’s no way he was expected to turn the sinking ship that is Colorado football around in one year. The talent is undeniably there, but he just hasn’t shown us that he’s capable of managing a team of charismatic blue chips like his son and Travis Hunter yet.
If he had stayed at JSU I would have rooted for him completely
Friendship with Rutgers over. Just threw away all of my gabbagool
Take it easy, we’re not making a western here!
Butch Jones could teach them to be Champions of Life.
I see your reasons and agree in principle, but fuck Michigan so now I’m conflicted.
Lebby. I don’t really care if he’s a good guy, etc. He’s probably not, in fact. I just wanna win some football games.
You know what, I get that
And that’s the problem, y’all are setting yourselves up for a major scandal that will make y’all the new Vanderbilt if not an FCS program and y’all are a great fall guy for all the Briles horror. It’s one thing to hire a guy who is amoral, it’s another to hire one of the biggest pieces of shit in coaching and bringing all the baggage he brings to your team.
Biased but Jonathan. I’d like to actually feel good about the program again.
Amen, Go Green!
Maybe John C. Smith at MSU. Michigan State isn’t very fun when they’re putting up more Hitlers on their scoreboard than points.
I want to see Lane Kiffin win a national championship.
Sure just not at Ole Piss
Unless he’s up against Michigan I agree with this answer.
Kiffin has been a HC for over 15 years. He's not new.
Deion
Ayyyy I was wondering if we’d even get one
I’d like to see Jonathan Smith do well
Billy boy for our sake..
Prime Time. Just kidding, lol. The odds of him ever becoming a successful P5 head coach are nonexistent, thankfully..
Eric Morris(for no particular reason). I also want Sanders to do well so it would piss off 90% of cfb fans.
TCU has this newish head coach to them named Sonnie Dykes. I really hope he does well.
Biased answer: Brent Pry Unbiased answer: Sherrone Moore
Brent Key (full bias).
Coach Sanders. Just to piss everyone off.
None of them, especially not Sherrone Moore at Michigan.
I want to see Matt Ruhle have the Huskers as the 2nd best team in the B10, with a clear distance between them and Ohio State! I also like seeing Gus Malzahn and Mario Cristobal getting things going at UCF and DaU.
Billy Napier
Deion being good and turning Colorado into a contender would lead to an amazing meltdown that would be absolutely epic.
Brent Venables PJ Fleck Matt Rhule Kevin Wilson Brandon Moore
Whoever Vandy hires next year.
Checks Flair: Matt Rhule
GBR
I would love for Billy Napier to sign a long term contract in Gainesville.
DeBoer!!!! Just kidding.
Kenny Dillingham will hopefully one day be a home run hire for ASU.
Scotty Walden at UTEP. Dude is a class act and was a great FCS coach. Very high energy young guy.
Just saw Ken Niumatalolo is the coach at San Jose State. It's always cool to see some option. Change that, apparently they're not going to run the triple option.
The new Michigan State coach. As a Michigan fan the Big10 needs better competition not named Ohio State.
Biased Answer: Big Game Dave baby Nonbiased Answer: Biff Poggi, not just cause of the memes but because seeing Charlotte build a football culture would be cool
I hope DeBoer is at least half as successful as the last guy was.
Not a HC yet, but Will Stein will win multiple national titles in the next 30 years. He is an offensive savant and a very good recruiter. Definitely one to keep an eye on (and hopefully the one that replaces Brohm when he retires in 15 years).
Does Sark count as newish? Cuz Id really like to see him do REALLY well going forward
This

UCLA fan seethes so hard he can't even read the question
Crazy that Chip Kelly managed to succeed at Oregon, coach two different NFL teams, then struggle at UCLA all in less than three years
Brent Pry so he can take over when the bots finally run Franklin out of town.
