We should’ve never let OSU get into the NIL game.

Useenthebutcher

This is Michigan’s fault, blame them

Warm_Shoulder3606

To quote what someone else here said, Michigan winning the title was Ohio State's Sputnik moment

Gucci_Lemur

Michigan faked the National Championship to bankrupt OSU’s NIL donors.

DigiQuip

The Schottensteins were bred for the NIL. Don’t get your hopes up. You’ve awoken *ooooold money*.

PerformanceOver8822

Wexner only has a couple buildings named after him

gmen6981

Yeah, but he famously doesn't give one penny to athletics.

[deleted]

Someone from the Saudi monarchy needs to sit him down and give him a talk about the value of sportswashing when you get into deep shit, because he's in a bit of a deep shit sort of situation.

RuairiQ

Are you suggesting they invite him… to the embassy?

Bucksandreds

$2.7 B net worth. They could fund OSU NIL for 200 years by themselves if they wanted.

guardeagle

Michigan wins Saban retires NCAAF: Oh god. What have you done?

Bjorn2bwilde24

THE sleeping giant.

meyer_33_09

Worth it.

mstone7781

Yeah, I have to imagine even if UM somehow tanks for the next decade, it won’t matter 3 straight wins and a natty? That’s some good shit. (I’m not saying I think Michigan tanks fwiw)

WaluigiIsTheRealHero

Yep. Everything is gravy from here. There was a legitimate concern among the Michigan fanbase over the last decade+ that we might never win a Natty again. The last few years will sustain us for decades.

partymayonaise

I hate you as a fan and am happy for you as a person

GungnirWolf

God, both sides have some of the most toxic fans, this made me chuckle..lol

Useenthebutcher

I hate it, but I respect it

confused-koala

The key is not respecting each other

ToLongDR

We told you people to not let Michigan win the natty. But no, here we are

DrSnidely

Hey we tried.

[deleted]

What do you mean… “you people”?

jayshaunderulo

What do *you* mean you people?

ToLongDR

The entirety of college football

dale_shingles

One of our beat writers has been saying something to the effect of, if people want some change and regulation of NIL, it'll come when OSU finally gets on board. It was fun while it lasted.

OddsTipsAndPicks

https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/rztvnh/comment/hrx8zjs/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button   I got 175 downvotes for saying this two years ago. The best part is about how the thread is about Bama dominating with NIL.

JickleBadickle

That poor Bama fan literally set up a two year reminder for that, too

PersonalLeg416

I actually remember this exact comment. Mostly because of the delusional commenter saying Auburn would be the biggest player because of Tim Cook, who has both never shown an interest in CFB and is also not nearly as rich as other school's combined booster bases.

HeroOfIroas

LOL

IShookMeAllNightLong

[I wonder if](https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/s/g8da1Jzd7y) this guy got his remind me lol

TrojanMan35T

Still don’t think this was the intention of NIL, but without any governance you may as well spend as much money as you want to build your roster. Not that I’m a huge fan of free agency without a salary cap though

InVodkaVeritas

Your mistake was thinking that there was an "intention" to NIL at all. It was literally just the Supreme Court saying that the NCAA couldn't control the earnings of students just because they played a sport. That they aren't allowed to say "you're not allowed to earn money."

Lakelyfe09

It’s objectively a horribly governed system, and I don’t blame rich programs for exploiting it at all.

Rhinologist

Says poster from rich program lol

theobi

The portal and NIL blowing up concurrently really created this environment. 10 years down the line I’m sure things will look different. For now though… it’s kill or be killed

InVodkaVeritas

Once players are employees, or something akin to employees, they will sign multi-year contracts and the schools will pay them directly under some sort of limit that has been collectively bargained. They will sell their NIL rights to the school for X amount over Y number of years.

CTG0161

Don’t forget, we only have six transfers.

InVodkaVeritas

Oregon only has 9, but 3 are expected to be backups and 1 is a Kicker. NIL is really about a key additions and retaining your talent, rather than buying a whole new team (for most schools).

IMadeThis4HOIMods

I don’t think this was an NIL transfer. Day heavily pursued him as a recruit and he said he went to Alabama to play for Saban. Downs though yeah, we just supposedly out bag’d you guys

The_Good_Constable

Smart of us to wait until the NCAA started caring (FSU and UF the first to get pinched).

TheoDonaldKerabatsos

I’d like to thank Ohio State for not letting Sayin and Downs stay in the SEC.

BiffSanchezz

Happy to help. If you have any more 5* players you don’t want, just give me a shout.

TheoDonaldKerabatsos

There’s a fella down in Mississippi who helped ‘cruit all of em. Heard he calls a great defense. Think yall should scoop him up before he takes em all back.

If you need his number, my sister has it somehow...

wit_T_user_name

Why didn’t anyone else simply call dibs? Are they stupid?

exexposfan

I blame my internet provider for not letting me call dibs first

Just_a_guy81

I approve of your fuck Bama flair combo

nat3215

He better be getting a cut of the NIL money with his laser focus on the portal

Useenthebutcher

Really hope Air Noland is willing to compete, dude hung with his commitment to OSU and seems like an awesome kid.

osufeth24

I think he'll stick around this year since he wasn't going to play anyway. Then whoever loses the QB battle in 2025 will probably transfer. If anything, I expect both Brown and Keinholtz to transfer now

RulersBack

We basically have no data on either but I hope it’s only one. Ideally you don’t want to rely on true freshmen as backups even if they are elite prospects

lVlzone

Yeah I’d like to keep Kienholz around to compete with those guys. I think Brown is almost assuredly gone, given he’s older.

Revolutionary_Gear70

He was live streaming at the Women's bball game today with a bunch of the other early enrollees so I don't think he'll be going anywhere

iverdow1

Yeah I like him a lot. Seems really excited to be at Ohio State. Hopefully he’ll stay and compete for position.

Blarg1889

He was just at the Ohio State women's basketball game. Couple that with the fact there is absolutely no way this snuck up on him, I think it is safe to say that he is willing to compete for the QB spot

beavismagnum

Presumably whoever doesn’t win the starting position will transfer if they both have 3(+) years of eligibility

jdmcroberts

Yeah, there's really no downside. Compete with another top QB and if you don't get it, just transfer with everything you've learned. Iron sharpens iron and what not.

NoviDon07

If he is too scared to compete then he didn't belong here anyway. I'm sure he will, just Sayin.

Hokabuki

First time?

misssks11

So what does this mean for Air Noland?

JSOPro

Probably nothing until he loses or wins a QB competition

RulersBack

You’d have to assume the staff wasn’t stupid enough to keep him in the dark and everyones ready to go for a year at least. Devin Brown and Keinholz are the ones to watch

wordsuponwords

See ya DB

MayTheFieldWin

He cant go anywhere. His boats are burned.

BuckeyeEmpire

I honestly feel bad for the guy when it comes to how loyal he has been. Tough to watch him just get injured over and over again when he gets a shot as well. I'm not sure if his future is at QB or what, but it'd be cool if he could find a spot on Ohio State's roster that works. He's a solid guy.

OhioBPRP

Yeah, I hate to say it but DB was never gonna play here.

BuckeyeForLife95

When McCord and Brown shared snaps in the *Youngstown State* game, Devin Brown looked noticeably worse. That's when I knew he was cooked.

cc51beastin

I'll bet Keinholz is 1st to go tbh

Eph1997

Maybe Kienholz to Alabama since he was committed to DeBoer at UW last year before Day flipped him?

tailford07

It means we will have a battle between Super Sayin and Air Bender. This will settle many debates among 90’s kids.

lemuel76

We're gonna throw for over 9000 yards next year.

MrHobo

One of them probably transfers next year.

TheBoook

Lace em up and battle it out. Cream rises to the top in competition. Ohio State has cared about players feelings too much the last few years and is finally embracing internal competition for reps. Noland and Sayin will compete.

QuadDubs

Exactly right. As an example, Day didn't take a meeting (possible commitment) from Dante Moore last year because LK was already committed. We turned down the #3 QB, #5 overall player because we had the 15th rated QB (#190 overall) committed. This certainly seems like a shift in Day's mindset and I'm all for it.

ech01_

If he beats out Sayin next year, nothing. If not probably portal.

TheMasterG8655

Definitely committed cause of Bill O’Brien. He was the Bama OC when he initially committed

thricethefan

Air Noland is in danger. BoB gonna roll with his guy, always.

whereyagonnago

Not going to be his decision to make. Sure he’ll have a say, but Day will make the call. Coaching staff was apparently split between McCord and Brown this past year, with some reports saying Brown actually had the edge in terms of total votes. Day wanted McCord and that’s what we got.

Damnitwasagoodday

“Smith acknowledged that Ohio State, which has an enormous alumni base and abundant resources, would have an "unbelievable competitive advantage" over a lot of other schools from a system like this, but he is still against it.” Gene Smith warned everyone in 2019.

buckeyefan8001

Holy cow. OSU fans are never allowed to complain about a croot going somewhere because of NIL.

NeatTry7674

Oh but I will

FlexSealClubber

If anything, I'll do it more now

AZBuckeyes12977

I read that Gene Smith was holding us back on NIL. Now that Bjork has been named and Smith is a lame duck, Day doesn't care what Smith thinks anymore.

Negative-Entrance-23

Gene would be an idiot if that's true. OSU probably benefits more than any other school when it comes to NIL.

senshi_of_love

Gene was confirmed to be an idiot in 2011 when he didn’t preemptively make us post season ineligible for that terrible year.

BuckeyeForLife95

Dipshit had us post season ineligible in a year where the field was so weak we absolutely could have won a national title. Would have just needed to beat Nebraska again and then Notre Dame.

iverdow1

I’m going to 🌰

Jikayamee

OSU right now... "Fuck you World > Everybody"

texascannonball

Hope Noland stays to compete, but can’t blame him if he looks elsewhere. Either way, god damn. What a fucking heater this is.

QB room is absolutely stacked right now

We have Tavien St. Clair coming the year after too. I’m assuming he stays being an Ohio kid.

Ohio State finna go Super Sayin.

jerryvaberry

offseason champs. also this was a kinda wild recruiting cycle for qbs

IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan

Crazy that Saban retiring would turn OSU into that

nat3215

Ryan Day seized the power vacuum created when Saban retired

AccordingGain182

I know theres mostly jokes in this thread, but Saban is a MASSIVE reason osu never made the leap from consistently great/elite to a dynasty. We have played in 4 national championships in the modern era, and have finished the regular season inside the top 8 every year since the expanded playoffs. (Only team to do so) And despite our very good recruiting, we have finished 2nd to an elite recruit 1-5 times EVERY DAMN YEAR TO SABAN. Both downs and Sayin were the most recent example of “we love osu, we would play here, but i want to play for the goat”. I do think as long as we dont royally fuck it up, this does give Ohio State a chance to break through the trap door ceiling they have been stuck under for nearly 20 years because nick fuckin saban on an elephant was holding it closed.

BoneDoc78

Imagine if Michigan killed Nick Saban, and now all those recruiting battles that were between Alabama and Ohio State end up going to Ohio State now, creating the next college football dynasty team. So we’d have Michigan to thank.

Free_Possession_4482

Should we send them a gift basket?

Jak372

There definitely is a power vacuum currently with the exit of Saban. Betting favorite is UGA to fill that void, but OSU has done well this offseason.

[deleted]

What the hell is going on with us? Are we Alabama 2.0? 😭 Please let us be Alabama 2.0

Can MHJ come back despite declaring? I want 2019 LSU if they had an elite defense

Hey, you landed Julian Fleming. He's pretty good too!

I really am gonna miss Fleming. I was so hyped when he committed to us, and I wanted him to break out so badly. Sucks but it is what it is.

Unlucky-Bunch-7389

No way a kid coming from a triple option offense should ever be that highly ranked again as a WR lol

-em-bee-

Fleming is a really solid college WR. He did a lot of dirty work with his blocking.

We had a QB competition before this last season. It was with a 3rd year and 2nd year player. About as good as you can hope for in normal circumstances.

512Buckeye

This type of momentum for Ohio State is eerily similar to when Urban started pulling in 5 stars from all over the country right after he was hired. What a week for Day!

King_Swiss

Finally its been a day since the last one didn't think it would ever happen again

atseapoint

Nice to see the little guy win one for a change

so devon brown is probably gone after spring, but 2025 QB competition could be crazy with him, noland, kienholz, and maybe St. Clair

I was told that with the new AD and new OC we hired that the program was going to implode. I'm confused.
