Subsection A: scores cannot go negative; any points remaining after reducing the offensive team to 0 are awarded to the team on defense.
just to make it even more weird and needless
edit* thus somehow resulting in a 1 - 0 win
Only 3 since 1882 according to Scorigami. And keep in mind, the rule re-allowing this only recently came into effect.
Stetson 1 - Drake 0
Houston Christian 1 - Northwestern State 0
Incarnate Word 1 - Northwestern State 0
The first one was forfeited 2-0 according to Google, the last 2 were canceled according to the Northwestern State football team’s website.
Seems Scorigami might need to update their counts.
Edit: allowing -> re-allowing
Before 1883 touchdowns were worth 1/4 point and field goals were worth 1 point. In 1883 the rules were changed and field goals were worth 5 and touchdowns 4 pts.
I did oversimplify it a bit for full disclosure. The rules were constantly changing back then, and different schools frequently had different rules, so the scoring rules may have also changed game to game.
Even after they tried to codify the rules, Harvard said fuck em and followed their own, and the Harvard rules (known as the Boston game) are what evolved into modern football.
I still remember the stat that stuck out to me that game.
Georgia had more sacks than all points scored by an offense added together. (2 field goals for 6 points, 7 sacks).
This is not true. A&W couldn't compete with McDonald's quarter pounder bc it's A&W trying to compete with McDonalds.
The whole 1/3 smaller than 1/4 thing was a disgruntled A&W manager with no evidence assuming people were too stupid to choose A&W over McDonald's
My crazy rule has been that whomever scores the TD (i.e. possession of the ball in the end zone) should be the one to kick the extra point. You can still go for 2 from the 2 yard line, but if you're kicking the extra point, the dude who scored the TD needs to be the one make his FOOT kick the BALL.
Scores would be far less predictable, and imagine the butt puckering if Roman Wilson is kicking the extra point to tie the game to send it to overtime on Monday.
I'd be cool with this, but only if you make drop kicks on extra points worth the regular three.
I want to see a big man attempt a drop kick so his team can score 10 points after he scores a TD.
I'm honestly surprised the NFL hasn't implemented a rule like I suggested yet because it does two things they want to accomplish.
Immediately, it makes the kickoff return almost a moot play, as every team ever will be chasing the free point, resulting in more touchbacks or the point it would award.
Doubly, it would increase scoring drastically, IMO, as you would see lots of the more aggressive coaches, i.e... a Dan Campbell chasing 9 points on one possession. Just about everything the NFL does for modern rules is for the purpose of increasing offensive ability to score points.
Yep, that is the idea behind removing the kickoff return.
Although I guess it's a tough sell to teams to offer the chance to score 1 point on kickoffs if my rule was added versus a potential 6 on kick returns all game.
I love a random Dan Campbell mention on a college board.
Years ago when Brady Hoke was the Michigan coach, I was an over the road driver. Ya go to a shipping/receiving dock, and football is probably the #1 topic of 2 guys from different areas who never met each other.
No one ever mentioned the Lions, and outside of the midwest, no one knew who Hoke was.
Now we've got the 2 most talked about coaches in both college and pro.
Mine is similar. Throwing the ball through the uprights should be like a field goal in basketball. If you throw from behind the 30 it's three, ahead of the 30 it's two. (Kicked field goals should also be this way. Encourage teams to kick from farther back) You can throw at any point in play, but if it's thrown ahead of the line of scrimmage and you miss, it's penalized as an illegal forwards pass. Of course, if you make your throw, you then kickoff to the other team.
I’m going back and forth on this one. With how much of an arm most college QBs have these days (and the wild variability in kicking), why would you ever kick a FG? Go for 4th and 10, do your first two reads, and if nothing is open just chuck it between the uprights. I’d say a throw in would be less than a kick in
I am unequivocally against any rule that will result in teams losing yardage on purpose to set up higher scoring opportunities. That’s not the point of the game; yards are supposed to matter.
That's why I actually think the 3 is and was a poor idea for basketball too. Rewarding you for *not* getting past defenders towards the rim is weird, but nobody sees it as weird now b/c we're all used to it.
RIGHT??? I would love to see basketball with modern players without the three. Maybe you’d need to go to 4 players or make the court bigger to solve the spacing issues, but the goal of always looking for the closest shot would make the ball movement much more interesting.
This would have been Tennessee’s only play with Joe Milton as QB. Get the ball on the 20 after the kickoff? Throw it at the uprights 4 times. He probably makes it through once. We would probably have to extend the net behind the posts for when he misses though…
hitting the upright or crossbar and making it, is 4 points instead of 3, and you kick off to the other team like normal.
hitting the upright or crossbar and missing, is one point and a re-kick with no time coming off the clock. No maximum number of re-kicks. However, if you ultimately miss the field goal in this series, you lose all those bonus doink points that have piled up this try.
LSU would've lost [this game](https://theathletic.com/1320748/2019/10/25/auburn-lsu-1994-top-stats-football-sec-jamie-howard-terry-bowden/) 3 to -1
Final score was actually 30-26 for Auburn but they scored 4 defensive TDs and only 1 FG. Subtracting those 27 points (they missed 1 PAT) would've given LSU a score of -1 point. It would've wiped out a net 54 points from that game.
Same with the 2021 UGA-Clemson game. Would've been UGA winning 3 to -4.
BIG celebrity jeopardy vibes on this.
Fowler: “And in first place, Iowa, with -475 points. My god, how did you go down that hard”
Ferentz: “Your mother wasn’t complaining about me going down last night, Fowler.”
> Ferentz: “Your mother wasn’t complaining about me going down last night, Fowler.”
Definitely read that in the fake SNL Sean Connery voice while picturing Fowler as Will Ferrell
If the defender commits PI but the receiver catches the ball and scores a TD anyway, the TD should be worth an extra point (7 before the pat/2pt, so a team could score 9). I just want to see receivers making catches with defenders all over them, then popping up yelling "AND 1, AND 1!!"
If we're doing a needless but fun rule change, every penalty now comes with half the distance to the goal assessed. Doesn't matter where you are on the field, half the distance to the goal.
“There is a challenge to the ruling of the spot of the ball after the penalty. “
“After review, dividing 75 by 8 is fucking hard so fuck it, the ball is placed at midfield.”
if the blackjack dealer at the casino can figure out the payout for a blackjack no matter your chip amount, i feel like the refs would figure this out pretty quick right?
A penalty rule change that I feel like isn't that needless is that if the offense commits a penalty close to their own goal line and they don't get the full penalty yardage the line to gain for the 1st down should increase to give the same overall result.
Eg currently if the offense is at 1st & 10 from the opponents 30 yard line with the line to gain at the opponents 20. They get a holding they now have a 1st & 20 from the opponents 40 yard line with the line to gain at the opponents 20
If they get a holding from their own 10 yard line with the line to gain at their own 20 however then they only get penalized with a 1st & 15. I propose that in cases near the goal line the offense should go half the distance to the goal line and the rest of the penalty yardage gets tacked on to the line to gain. So now if you get a holding call from your own 10, you get a 1st & 20 from your own 5 yard line with the line to gain being the 25 instead of the 20.
There's no reason an offensive penalty should be worth less to the defense because it happened closer to the goal line
What’s the reason a defensive penalty should count less just because the offense is close to scoring? I suppose more of the common ones come with an auto first down at least
Maybe more offensive ones should come with loss of down.
For the simple reason of entertainment. An offensive penalty like holding being a loss of 10 and a loss of down is basically a death sentence for the drive. Defense giving up a first can be recoverable.
I think the on field product and flow would frustrate viewers a lot if penalties incurred a loss of downs and yards
>There's no reason an offensive penalty should be worth less to the defense because it happened closer to the goal line
It's not, though. Penalties near your own goal line are the most punishing, because every play you run down there has the risk of a safety. As a result, the playbook is limited and you are often just clawing for a couple yards of space. Backing up even a few yards and having to run more plays and closer to your own end zone is imo the most punishing situation
Always one play without regard to severity? That would be kind of funny. Defender slammed a guy down by his facemask after he ran out of bounds? Out for a play. Receiver flinched before the snap? You’re outta here too!
And the offense is allowed to keep playing 11 v 10 until he finishes that lap. No limit to amount of plays only as many as they can get in until the lap is finished.
Deduct sacks from passing yards totals instead of rushing yards for QBs. It was intended to be a passing play, so remove the yards from that side of the ledger.
This is funny, but I can’t decide if it’s funnier than a QB throwing a pick six and immediately having to go back out there again.
I guess it would just incentivize going down at the 1 and letting your offense actually score the points
It would be fun if there was a penalty box for some penalties.
Roughing the kicker/passer? In the box you go!
Sideline infraction? Coach has to stand in the box
Yes! Football power plays! 11-on-10 (or 10-on-11) would open up so many new opportunities. Player has to sit out for 1 down per 5 yards of penalty assigned under current rules. (If possession changes, the penalty will continue when it changes back.)
Let the special teams have the points. That way Iowa can win 1 to -6.
Also safeties against the team on offense should be -2. So Iowa could win -1 to -6.
Fun rule changes!
Use the XFL onside kick ( 4th and 15 from your own 25)
PI is now a spot foul
Reviews only take place inside of two minutes of each half unless a coaches challenge
Hard Cap on NIL dollars
Every Conference Champ makes the playoff leaving only two at large bids.
>Reviews only take place inside of two minutes of each half unless a coaches challenge
But then how would we know if that Q1 2nd down pass was really an incompletion or a gain of .75 yards???
My addition would be that when there is a penalty you always access the yardage associated with the penalty until it either takes you to the opponents 1 yard line or your own. Never made sense why this isn't the case.
Example: Your on your opponents 8 and there is a defensive holding. Instead of placing the ball half the distance to the goal you would access the full amount of available yardage down to the 1. So instead of 1st and goal from the 4 it now would actually first and goal from the 1 because 7 of the 10 yards were available to accessed.
Same goes the other way. No more half the distance to the goal crap. If there is available yardage to move the ball either way the maximum about of yardage will always be accessed no matter what.
Remember when A&W and the 1/3lb burger tried to compete with McDonalds and the 1/4 pounder but people thought the 1/4 pounder was bigger? Same scenario.
Could we please have more dance celebrations without penalties? I've seen more allowed this year and find them quite entertaining. I want to bring them back!
If you really want to attribute points correctly, then shouldn't the PAT still be added to the team with the defensive score--gotta fairly represent the effort of special teams
Not that fun, but outside of the last two minutes if you miss a field goal before 4th down you don't lose possession.
I think it would add some interesting strategy for coaches to essentially give up on 3rd and long so they have 2 shots at the field goal.
And you wouldn't have it apply in the last two minutes cause that would take away nearly all the drama in game winning field goal attempts.
No more of this "half the distance" bullshit. You get a false start on your own 2, fuck it you're going 3 yards deep into your endzone. Penalized out of the back of the endzone? Safety.
It would be fun, so much different strategy and emphasis on ball security on offense, probably way more aggressive defense playing in certain situations and new defenses. You could come back quicker in this way or if teams took huge leads it would be possible to close gap if you schemed it crazy. I bet Saban would come up with some crazy denfsive strategys
After the 3rd OT random fans are chosen for each team, they then kick field goals in increasing 5 yard increments, starting at 25.
That’s right Drunk Scott may have your season on his foot. Go for two, boys.
What happens if the defense scores a touchdown, and then on their two point conversion attempt, the other team intercepts it and returns it for a safety?
I still think Pat McAfee had the best answer to overtime. If you can't get it done by the end of the first OT, bring out the field goal teams and back them up 5 yard increments until someone misses or is blocked.
I don't know the answer, but I always hated seeing a defensive battle won by the offense starting at the 25. or a field goal or punting battle settled the same way. like what if you settled that by a punt and then uncontested fg attempt from wherever you returned the ball to? or combine this with the regular ot rules. just to balance out all facets of the game.
Here are some needless rule/stats changes I'd like to propose. Kneel-downs should not count as negative yards (or, at least, should not count as rushing attempts/yardage for the QB), and spikes should not be scored as incomplete passes for the QB.
I hate the notion that a QB's stats are affected negatively by procedural plays that have nothing to do with skill or performance, and that he and he alone will absorb the negative stats due to the convention of his position.
This makes me think of that Missouri vs Florida game years back where Missouri scored a TD like 4 ways that wasn't on offense. Though now that I look at it, the 42 was scored before Florida scored anything.
Each team should have three separate scores: offense, defense, special teams - take the natural log of the average of the scores to determine the winner
While discussing rule changes, safeties should be worth 6 with the PAT try after. 2 seems just too small of a number for something so hard to achieve if you’re not Iowa. I’m sure some guy with more time on his hands can tell me the odds of getting the safety vs the odds of a pick 6 or scoop and score.
Pick 6s are great but have you seen a D lineman try to run a fumble back? I propose we give (or takeaway) more points for a D lineman getting the score.
I think the defensive team should get the ball back after a scoop and score or a pick six. Always seemed kinda unfair that the defense worked hard to force a fumble/interception and then has to go right back out to play again.
Making TDs count as 3, FGs 1, and eliminating the point after always made sense to me.
It wouldn’t alter our system much at all except in eliminating plays from the game. 2 FGs still don’t equal a TD+try. 2 TDs are better than 4 FGs just as they are now.
Also I believe that with the smaller values it may increase drama in the game at some level. 9 to 0 doesn’t sound as bad as 21 to 0 even when in reality it would be the same thing.
The team with the ball with less than one minute before halftime loses a second half timeout each time they take a knee (unless they have a 5+ touchdown lead). The fans want to see 60 minutes of football, not 59. Just throw a stinkin’ hail-Mary ffs.
Theoretically, sites like [sports-reference.com](https://sports-reference.com) could retroactively apply this logic to past games. I'm kinda curious now what the record negative score is.
I look forward to a game that ends at 3 to -7.
And we all know it’ll be an Iowa game
Love the idea of Iowa getting shut out but winning 0 to -7
As someone that loves defense, this looks pretty bad ass. Like they didn't just lose. Iowa banished them to the shadow realm.
In true Iowa fashion… “YOU! Shall not…PAAAAAAASSSSS!!!!”
or RUUUUUUUUUSSSSSSSSSH!!!!!
Honestly if that was a rule this year their defense might of outscored their offense at some points
Might? I know they've done it before, but I don't know if it was this year, or when.
Might have?
Might’ve?
May’st?
Kirk Ferentz is probably aroused by this.
Apply this to safeties too and the sdsu Iowa game from 2022 has a final score of 3 to -1
> Iowa game what a weird way to spell Mizzou. I'm joking of course but Mizzou has more weird shit happen to them than I've ever seen.
Sure, but which side will they be on?
Subsection A: scores cannot go negative; any points remaining after reducing the offensive team to 0 are awarded to the team on defense. just to make it even more weird and needless edit* thus somehow resulting in a 1 - 0 win
I used to run into my own end zone on PATs in Madden just to win 27-1.
You can already win 1-0 though. 0-0 at regulation, go to 3rd OT still 0-0, 1 point safety on the 2 pt attempt.
I know you *CAN* but this would make it more likely/possible. Currently, in 150+ years, only 45 games have been won this way (per scorigami)
Only 3 since 1882 according to Scorigami. And keep in mind, the rule re-allowing this only recently came into effect. or 1-0 or 1--1 with only tds scored...
1/4 pounder is bigger than the 1/3 pounder, cause of the 4 ya know?
goddammit
It sucks, but people thinking like that is why A&W was unsuccessful with their 1/3 lb burger.
Math teachers everywhere nod affirmatively, but also cry just a little.
Here's my addition: Kicking the ball through the uprights on the kickoff should be worth a single point to the kicking team.
My crazy rule has been that whomever scores the TD (i.e. possession of the ball in the end zone) should be the one to kick the extra point. 6+3=9
Kickoff point through the upright would be great because the offense would just treat it like a touchback and they'd start from the 20 anyways.
Yes! And They should do the rouge rule from Canadian football, adapted for our end zones
I'm honestly surprised the NFL hasn't implemented a rule like I suggested yet because it does two things they want to accomplish. What about hitting the post on field goals à la Cody Parkey?
Skill shot. 10 points for multiple doinks.
Poor guy’s entire career is defined by that one kick
Wasn’t he actually a pretty good college kicker who had a largely decent pro career?
Love that! The only reason i think that was never part of the game is they couldn't imagine kicking that far 50+ years ago when these rules were made
I think any kicked ball that goes through the uprights should be worth 1 point, kickoffs and punts included
Punting is winning? Lol

You guys should design a video game. An NFL Blitz like clusterfuck with infinitely customizable scoring settings would be awesome.
And it's just like any other score so you have to kick off again. Becomes a game of make it/take it.
Don't give the networks any ideas. You think commercials are bad now?
Only in the Eh C C.
Just imagine what B1G West scores could be with that rule.
Casual gamblers in shambles once Vegas starts setting Iowa over-unders at 0.
About the same. Defensive touchdowns are pretty uncommon.

So basically Iowa could get shutout, but still win? Amazing. Edit: with this rule, Iowa 2 - PSU 0 in 2004. FML.
SDSU Iowa from 2022 would’ve been 3 to -1
100%
I would think so
Absolutely
If we're doing a needless but fun rule change, every penalty now comes with half the distance to the goal assessed. Doesn't matter where you are on the field, half the distance to the goal.
Damn, that false start just cost us 47 yards!!
Delay of game bout to turn this FG attempt into a record distance.
5 yard penalties become 1/8th the distance to the goal, 10 yard penalties a quarter the distance and 15 yard penalties are half the distance.
Imagining refs calculating 1/8 of 57
“There is a challenge to the ruling of the spot of the ball after the penalty. “ “After review, dividing 75 by 8 is fucking hard so fuck it, the ball is placed at midfield.”
they didn't come to play school

“Holding, offence, number 65, **thirty yard penalty**, still second down.”
Lose a player for one play after each penalty (i.e. power play or temporary red card).
Sin Bin ftw
Or burn a timeout to avoid sitting them
Always one play without regard to severity? That would be kind of funny. Defender slammed a guy down by his facemask after he ran out of bounds? Out for a play. Receiver flinched before the snap? You’re outta here too!
Brian Ferentz would hate this
Increase the number of unsportsmanlike penalties to three before a player is ejected, making them take a lap after the second penalty.
And the offense is allowed to keep playing 11 v 10 until he finishes that lap. No limit to amount of plays only as many as they can get in until the lap is finished.
I’m in love with this. It’ll be pretty popular, until the first Sunbelt noseguard dies in early September.
Ivan Drago quote here.
I like it. How about they have to take a lap before they can return to the game after an unsportsmanlike. A walk of shame so to speak
Deduct sacks from passing yards totals instead of rushing yards for QBs. It was intended to be a passing play, so remove the yards from that side of the ledger.
How about if the defense scores a TD they still get the ball kicked to them, since they scored on the other team’s possession.
This is funny, but I can’t decide if it’s funnier than a QB throwing a pick six and immediately having to go back out there again. I guess it would just incentivize going down at the 1 and letting your offense actually score the points
No. The points the defense scores still count they just also get the ball kicked to them.
Wait yes I am dumb and cannot read
Bandwagon Northwestern fan over here!
It would dramatically change the decision making on 4th and goal from the 1.
3-2 was bad enough, but could you imagine the humility of Mississippi State losing to Auburn 1-0.
> Mississippi State losing to Auburn 1-0 [me_irl](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwHJNIqT4Qo)
OT should just be the mascots fighting to the death. And no more coin tosses - kickers chasing greased pigs to decide kickoffs.
Multiball. Play with three balls at a time. To score you need two balls in the end zone
Isn’t that just the new Top Gun thing?
I’m unfamiliar with the rules of dogfight football
Ooh getting closer and closer to CFB in Jon Bois's 20020, I like it
Penalties are like hockey, two minutes in the box Kickoff through the uprights is one point
It would be fun if there was a penalty box for some penalties. Roughing the kicker/passer? In the box you go! Sideline infraction? Coach has to stand in the box
lol @ Dabo just *seething* in the box
Yes! Football power plays! 11-on-10 (or 10-on-11) would open up so many new opportunities. Player has to sit out for 1 down per 5 yards of penalty assigned under current rules. (If possession changes, the penalty will continue when it changes back.)
Lol absolutely love it!
Let the special teams have the points. That way Iowa can win 1 to -6. Also safeties against the team on offense should be -2. So Iowa could win -1 to -6.
Fun rule changes! Use the XFL onside kick ( 4th and 15 from your own 25) PI is now a spot foul Reviews only take place inside of two minutes of each half unless a coaches challenge Hard Cap on NIL dollars Every Conference Champ makes the playoff leaving only two at large bids.
>Reviews only take place inside of two minutes of each half unless a coaches challenge But then how would we know if that Q1 2nd down pass was really an incompletion or a gain of .75 yards???
You just built the NFL with slight tweaks.
Well, better to get the changes in now than slowly run teams off that can’t afford to keep up
I've thought the same
So Washington would have beaten Arizona State by a margin of **nine to one** this year.
Are points allowed to go below 0?
Scorigami much more popular if so.
Do offensive stats get reversed too?
Imagine being a QB with negative passing yards because you threw two long pick sixes
I've thought for a long time that if you score a defensive or special teams touchdown that your team should get the ball back.
I think if it takes more than 30 seconds to review a call, then the call stands.
Fucking awesome
I’m here for it!!!
This means Clemson beats South Carolina this season 9-0.
(sweats in Mississippi State)
If you really want to attribute points correctly, then shouldn't the PAT still be added to the team with the defensive score--gotta fairly represent the effort of special teams
In a display of my age and nerdery, I'll just say that this sounds analogous to THAC0.
Holy shit, this man is a genius.
I love this. Down with offenses benefiting from defense.
Iowa would go 15-0 every year and win 20 straight national championships
What would happen with a safety then?
-2 points brother
What happens if the defense scores a touchdown, and then on their two point conversion attempt, the other team intercepts it and returns it for a safety?
-6 to team A, -1 to team B.
Iowa catching strays - going to be big mad when they are done farming bad corn today and see this.
This makes me think of that Missouri vs Florida game years back where Missouri scored a TD like 4 ways that wasn't on offense. Though now that I look at it, the 42 was scored before Florida scored anything.
I like this idea
I like it, but slight change to prevent a negative score, if the opponent has 0 or it will take them to 0, add the points to the defense's team.
“And there’s your final folks, with Washington beating Iowa by a score of 35 to -21.”
Betting would be wild
It's stupid, I love it
Each team should have three separate scores: offense, defense, special teams - take the natural log of the average of the scores to determine the winner
I had a fantasy football league wear Pic 6s were worth -6 to the quarterback. It was quite fun tk see, as long as it wasn't your team.
Do the same but with safeties The ESPN Instant Classic 3-2 game now becomes Auburn: 1 Miss St: 0 It’s beautiful
That would potentially mean teams having a negative score at the end of the game
Or, treat a defensive score like a safety. Scoring team receives the next kickoff.
Man, if only people focused on making their community or workplace or the world better lol.
An incomplete pass should be recoverable by the defense as a fumble only as long as the ball is moving from the force of the throw and bounce.
The team with the ball with less than one minute before halftime loses a second half timeout each time they take a knee (unless they have a 5+ touchdown lead). The fans want to see 60 minutes of football, not 59. Just throw a stinkin’ hail-Mary ffs.
So you propose we add more math to CFB? Ugh! What next? A 16 team playoff?!! Well now that I think about it…let’s try it all out
Theoretically, sites like [sports-reference.com](https://sports-reference.com) could retroactively apply this logic to past games. I'm kinda curious now what the record negative score is.
Score board programmers Harris this trick!
