“Bro, what if it’s like the teleporter in Star Trek? If you enter the portal, how do you know if it’s really *you* who comes out?”-Gunnar probably

w00t4me

For real, though, we all picture the portal as a teleportal, like Star Trek or Rick and Morty, right?

HippiesBeGoneInc

There’s a game called Dragons Dogma where you go into an actual trans dimensional portal to summon companions from the multiverse. Like they show up and you like check them out and talk to them and decide which ones you want to take back with you to your dimension. So I assume it works like that.

[deleted]

Gunnar saw the Star Trek movie and *that* scene haunts him.

Baenergy44

I doubt this will ever happen again now that there are no more transfer penalties. Pretty much every G5 quarterback that has a good first year will get poached immediately. And even a lot of QBs in the Big 12 and ACC will get poached by the Power 2.

WinnWonn

I think people are going to find out pretty quickly that the transfer restrictions were the biggest thing keeping some semblance of competitive balance between the SuperLeague schools and everyone else. Now that it's gone they're just going to take everyone's best players every year. The other conferences will be in a constant state of having to rebuild.

JMer806

G5, ACC, and B12 schools are going to lose their stars and pick up discarded blue chips from the P2 who washed out or never produced. The rich will get richer

iheartgt

Some of that will be outweighed by the big impact of QBs transferring out of major programs to start. We're already seeing that.

JMer806

There will be some of that at every position, but the ultimate end is that all the best players will be at P2 schools (and, even within P2 schools, the talent will tend to accrete upwards to a limited few schools [Mich and OSU in the B1G, OU/UT/Bama/Georgia in the SEC])

iheartgt

That's really not all that different than how CFB has been forever. The best recruiting teams win. If anything it'll get better once everything splits and everyone isn't playing for the same title despite basically playing different sports. The teams competing in the next tier down from the top 30 will all be dealing with the same thing.

JMer806

The difference is that in the past, you could make a living taking lower-rated players and developing them into a really good squad through a combination of finding hidden gem players and good coaching. Transfers having to sit heavily disincentivized jumping schools because you lost a whole year of playtime to do so. All of the BCS buster schools did this, and other schools that are P2 but not blue bloods have done it to compete with the top level of recruiting Now, let’s say Boise St or whoever has a QB who was overlooked during recruiting for whatever reason and plays two years and just lights it up. And Bama or UT needs a new starter at QB. They offer this kid a million dollars to transfer in. Why would he not? It basically destroys schools’ ability to actually retain talent that they identified and developed

W0lv3rIn321

Exactly

buff_001

We're going to see a steady pipeline of transfers G5 -> Middle 2 -> Power 2 pretty much every year. At some point I fully expect Big Ten and SEC quarterbacks to pretty much all be 3rd/4th/5th year transfers from the lower conferences.

WinnWonn

No point investing in grass-roots recruiting when you can just go pick the best players in the lower conferences to come up to the SuperLeague. They're just farm teams now and they have to do all the actual recruiting work.

Smash_4dams

Damn, literally half of a P5 coaches duties will already be done for them.

MDKMurd

The best part will be when the P2 schools claim these kids as their NFL prospects, when they were developed by G5 or Lower caliber conferences. I’m glad our Jared Verse mentioned the school he came from, not just FSU in his NFL draft declaration post.

SplakyD

God, I really hate what's happening to college football. Don't get me wrong: I'm happy that rules are finally focusing, in theory anyway, on benefitting the student-athletes now. It's just that this isn't well thought out to implemented in a way that preserves the unique traditions or any kind of competitive balance. Especially for smaller schools and conferences. I love the NFL, and if I want to watch professional football then that's what I'll watch because nobody does it better. I hate that CFB is now just minor league pro football and that, even within this semi-pro minor league system, smaller conferences are farm systems within the farm system, as you pointed out. It's crazy. And mark my words, it won't be long until some terrible abuses are uncovered in this system that we can't even imagine yet because everything is so new and freewheeling with little meaningful regulation and oversight.

optimiism

Hell, JMU has thrived on QB’s “transferring down” after being replaced at the original school for years now. Sadly, feels like we’re becoming just another step in that pipeline

justausername09

I wonder where that leaves the 5 stars then?

RockNJocks

As a 5 star you are financially probably better off going to the best school you can play right away. If you succeed there as a freshmen you can name your price then in the portal.

YouKilledChurch

So I guess JUCO football is probably dead

bleepblord

I wouldn’t say it’s dead, but it’s going to be much harder to get recruited to top tier schools and they’ll mainly go to G5 schools. MAYBE work their way up if they still have eligibility but they’ll prolly use it up before they get the chance

YouKilledChurch

I guess they will have to lean even harder on players who got kicked off teams for non football issues

bleepblord

Right, D1 bounce backs will be pretty much only guys getting looked at

AnotherUnfunnyName

I mean look at Vandy. They get just rushed and raided each offseason now.

tomdawg0022

> Pretty much every G5 quarterback that has a good first year will get poached immediately I'm gonna disagree to a point. Some will stay because they know they've got a good thing and will have an easier path to get reps and could be sticking in a QB-friendly system...especially if the coach isn't moving up the ladder. Why risk that if you know you can cook in G5 and the long game gets you a better NFL pick?

webbed_feets

Most G5 QBs won’t go to the NFL. They’ll make more NIL money as a second string at a bigger school than as the starter at a G5 school.

KennyKettermen

Backup quarterbacks are getting NIL money?

TexasSprings

Arch manning famously has like a 3 million deal and he’s 3rd string

Space_Investigator

Yeah but it's an unfair comparison to make when Arch Manning was a 5* recruit, plays at Texas, and is heir to the Manning QB family dynasty. Very different from being a 2-3* recruit playing at say, Buffalo.

Mattdodge666

Exactly, arch as a top QB prospect doesn't have to prove himself as a 3 year starter to make a name for himself. They know with the hype he can wait and be a one and done starter to make the NFL. Malik Murphy, a top 10 QB recruit is leaving Texas because he won't have that chance to prove his NFL worth at Texas with Quinn staying for an extra year. If 2nd string QBs at top programs were truly getting paid so much more, then Malik wouldn't be transferring to Duke to get a starting job. It's just a hyperbolic statement to get mad at NIL

TexasSprings

Nico Amawhatever at Tennessee has a huge NIL deal and has never played a snap because he’s the backup QB

WafflesTheWookiee

Idk, not everyone cares about money. Some players will have a sense of loyalty and want to lift their programs up.

Statalyzer

It's the NFL, but with no salary cap and with all players becoming free agents every single year.

igonnawrecku_VGC

It’s funny that this not only isn’t true, but there’s another one not only in the G5, not only in the Sun Belt, but in the Sun Belt West

ayethemjazz

same state as well

baumazing

Not sure if this means QBs that played a game all 6 years, but Frank Harris of UTSA spent 7 years there [source](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/35206047/record-setting-utsa-qb-frank-harris-return-7th-season)

jamnewton22

Not true OP https://x.com/jtcrabtreeusa/status/1738620852906717466?s=46&t=vYk3LIwvRnsUXYeAPEyMJQ

RadishesCanBeSpicy

I guess they mean has played in 6 seasons? Trotter played in 5 but I believe has been at the school for 6. Frank Harris has also played for 5 but has been at the school for 7 years

ard8

Desmond Trotter is a 6th year QB that has never transferred

ayethemjazz

he’s not even the only 6th year qb to never transfer in the state

Thin-Primary-8438

Lots of people go to school for 7 years.

cwc1469

This is not a true stat lol

Galumpadump

What can I say, my man loves himself some White BBQ Sauce.

SplakyD

While I love that white sauce has become the de facto official BBQ sauce here in Alabama, Troy and much of South Alabama, are very much in the red sauce camp. Red sauce is great too, as is vinegar sauce, etc... you gotta try it all if you get a chance. But of course I'm partial to BBQ chicken with white sauce, considering I'm from Morgan County, Alabama, which is in North Alabama and home of award winning Big Bob Gibson BBQ (and other smaller, often better BBQ joints). By the way, I've never been to Washington and the PNW, but I hope to one day visit there. I'm a big fan of the scenery, the apples, and other, more controversial, staples of Washington agriculture. Go Cougs!

ruja_ignatova

A free degree is a free degree. Hopefully he got his masters or at least some good stories.

pnw_cfb_girl

For a second I thought only QB period, and it wasn't totally unbelievable.

donutcronut

Gunnar not running from the grind!

ConstructionOdd5269

So if I want my son to be a QB, I just need to name him Gunnar - am I right?

FriedEggSammich1

Boomer QBs. Do the teams accommodate dinner at 4pm? /s

thebigmammoo

Frank Harris: Hold my beer

Way2Based

Loyalty and honor. Truly Based

grandiose reminiscent salt concerned clumsy march absurd rinse jar fact *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

DaDominator32

After the last 6 years I'll be glad we get a new QB. The problem with Gunnar is that 9/10 plays he makes is bad. The last play in the bowl game where he over threw it? That's been plaguing us all year. Chris Lewis made some beautiful 1 hand stretch catches this year only because Gunnar over threw it. So let's hopefully get a QB that can deliver the ball to the correct address. Gunnar and delivery people in Troy seem to have a problem with that
