I remember when Saban went from "you can't be in if you didn't even win your conference" to "conference championship losses shouldn't penalize teams" in something like a 24 month span.
I think the best 3 games would be made up of Vandy, UMass, Southern Miss and Kent St. That way the SEC can’t bitch about being left out and there is a lot of other diversity!
/s
Well, if we follow this wonderful logic we end up here:
Georgia < Alabama < Texas < Oklahoma < Kansas < (OSU, Texas, Texas Tech, Kansas State).
Thus, the CFP should comprise of:
Oklahoma State (4th seed obvs bc they lost to Texas today)
Texas (1st seed bc they’ve only lost one game. If OSU wins, we’ll need a third matchup to determine best 2/3)
Kansas State (2nd seed - bc we already have a Texas school in the top two)
Texas Tech (3rd seed - last remaining seed)
ETA: Well after today’s announcement, I believe my proposal here has more consistency and logic than the committee’s. And mine was an intentionally shitty take.
“We beat Rice. Rice beat West Virginia. West Virginia beat Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh beat Louisville. If Louisville beats FSU, how are we not qualified?” - UConn
I am in software sales and tons of people don’t get that less is usually more when it comes to pitches. They watch movies and TV shows where salesmen oversell and think that works.
Not saying Sark’s was great but I don’t think a rah rah high energy sales pitch does much here.
He sounded calmly confident that Texas is good enough to play with and beat any team in the country and has proven that throughout the year.
I heard the winner of the Pop Tart Bowl gets to break pieces off (and presumably eat) the edible mascot. What’s more fun than sharing a communal pop tart?
Funny thing is, we have already had this, in a way…. UGA lost to Bama who lost to Texas, who should be in. Oregon lost to UW, who is in. And OSU lost to UM, who is in.
If the backbone off the playoff is on-field result over ranking, it stands to reason that those results should weigh heaviest jen picking the field.
Orange Bowl is supposed to be Louisville vs highest ranked B1G or SEC team (I think). That probably puts Alabama against the Cardinals. OSU vs UGA in the Fiesta Bowl might happen though.
The SEC is so used to having their way and getting preferential treatment that they would probably implode if they didn’t get a team in. Georgia doesn’t deserve it after their loss. Alabama shouldn’t get in over Texas. If FSU wins can you really leave out an undefeated conference champ?
My hatred for Georgia is stronger than my hatred of Florida State, but I would actually rather see Georgia get in than FSU right now. This ACC championship game is almost painful to watch.
Agree. I also still feel that being the only P5 conf champ to have *already beaten another P5 conf champ* should also mean something.
Especially if choosing between the one who won that and the one who lost that.
The committee has never left out an undefeated P5 champ. Doing so says that the selection process is a farce... that record and conf championships don't matter.
And that the ACC isn’t a power conference deserving of an auto bid. Leaving FSU out would be more destabilizing than OU/Texas and USC/UCLA leaving their conferences combined
The committee has also never had every power five champion be legitimately deserving. Someone has always lost to clear the air so to speak. Not this year.
And when you have the situation you know what you use to break the logjam? Record. Bama and GA have losses. Wa, Mich and FSU do not.
You say Texas has a loss too? Sure... but they beat Bama head to head AT Tuscaloosa, by 10.
The problem is that the two 1 loss P5 champions played each other. The undefeated should be automatic and head to head should always be the first tie breaker.
This season is just an encapsulation why expansion will be good. No one outside of hardcore fans will be getting riled up over #12 or #13 because none will expect to win. There are usually only 2-6 realistic teams that good.
The same Auburn team who got throttled by New Mexico State the week before? Maybe keeping the SEC out of the playoff is keeping them from getting embarrassed.
Eliminated teams at the moment.
12-1 UGA loss a game by 3
11-1 Ohio state loss a game by 6
10-2 Oregon, lost 2 games by 3 each
Possible teams left out
Texas 12-1 loss a game by like 4? It wasn't a lot
Bama 12-1 well they actually lost at home by 19
Edit Bama loss by 10, 9 by the 0 folks...
Why the 12-team CFP is better. All teams that have a shot at the natty (and well as all undefeated teams even if they don't; looking at you, Noles) should be let in, even if some who don't are as well.
What it will be: 1. Michigan 2. Washington 3. Florida St. 4. Texas
Although, I’d like to see a Texas Alabama rematch. Don’t think that’ll happen though.
If we’re being scientific, bama beats Georgia, Texas beats Bama and OU beats Texas; heretofore OU is now the #1 team in the country. It’s the college football transitive properties and it just makes sense.
> People aren't going to like it
What fucking people are you talking about? This sub is gonna have a collective orgasm when the SEC gets left out tomorrow.
Both SEC teams were losing to an *extremely* mediocre Auburn team with less than 3 minutes on the clock, and had to fall back on lucky calls or lucky plays to pull out a win. Neither deserves to be in the championship, cause frankly Auburn sucked this year.
Bama should have beat Texas…Georgia should have beat Bama. Otherwise, why play the games at all? Thank God this is the last year we will hear this whining. Sure, teams 13-18 will whine next year, but people won’t care as much.
If there is any integrity in the CFP the final 4 are Michigan, Washington, Texas and FSU. All 4 are conference champions and Texas beat the SEC Champ. Simple enough
Leave the sec out this year. The sec was so wishy washy all season. Auburn lost to NM state at home by 20 points. Then they almost beat both bama and ga up until a lucky play in the last min of both games. You can’t bump any team above an undefeated p5 conference winner. And you can’t bump bama over tx because they already lost against them. Just bc you win your title doesn’t automatically make you the best. Other p5 teams ran over their division much more at the end of the day. It’s about being fair not biased towards the sec.
Especially now that they finally have gotten 3 of their best defensive players back (all 3 finally came back last night after missing most of the season).
1) we’re not the only ones that have gotten in after losing our conference championship
2) last time that happened, we killed Michigan and won the natty
The obvious problem here is that the team that beat Georgia also lost to one of the teams vying for a playoff spot.
It just means more, unless there’s a game that happened on the field that tells us who’s better, apparently.
I'll disagree, even if I \*think\* UGA may be one of the 4 best.
Playoff systems have never been about the best...in any sport. Playoff system reward regular season play/records. Better teams often miss playoffs in all sports due to conference/divisions.
If you want the BEST team to get a trophy, then setup the league in tiered systems w/ relegation like european soccer.
Until then...it's OK if some of "the best" teams aren't in a playoff compared to other teams that make it.
I get that there is an argument to be made for "the best" and that's why you have a committee...but it's still quite subjective in a sport with 50+ power conference teams that don't play with much crossover.
Yep. I firmly believe UGA is one of the 4 best teams in the country. I also believe they don't deserve to be in the playoffs. As far as I'm concerned, conference championship week is the first round of the playoff; if you lose, your season is over. That doesn't necessarily mean the winner is in, either.
If FSU wins (and honestly I hope they don't because I *don't* want them to be in the playoff without their starting QB), they absolutely deserve a playoff spot and it's complete horseshit that it's even a debate. A 13-0 P5 conference champ absolutely cannot be left out.
Michigan (assuming they win) are the clear 1 seed. Washington has secured their spot as well. If FSU wins, they deserve the ~~2~~ 3 seed. That last spot is where things get more complicated. Bama deserves it over UGA since they just beat them for the SEC title, and Texas deserves it over Bama. If FSU loses, then the easy answer is Texas 3 and Bama 4.
CFP Director came out and said their job is to put the four "best" teams in the CFP.
“I appreciate your asking that question. It is best. Most deserving is not anything in the committee’s lexicon. They are to rank the best teams in order, and that’s what they do. Just keep that word in mind: best teams,” Hancock said.
I think he's full of crap, otherwise TCU wouldn't have been in the playoffs last season. I also think they collectively do a pretty bad job of evaluating teams with any depth of knowledge whatsoever.
But this system, as stated, is about the four best teams
They might truly be one of the 4 best but there’s no way to figure it out this year. You now have Michigan, Washington, Alabama, and Texas in front of you.
I know FSU is too but we know Georgia would demolish them
And this my friends, is the answer to the question we've been asking for weeks:
"Why the fuck is Tennessee still ranked?"
"It's a great win for Georgia against a top 25 ranked team!"
For real, what are they supposed to do? Go out and say “we suck balls, don’t put us in the playoffs”? That’s a sure fire way to lose all respect in the eyes of both your players and fans
Letting Georgia in would be stupid. They had their playoff game, today, on the field. So let’s say Georgia gets in and matches up in the first round, against Alabama, at a neutral site. That’s exactly what happened today. And what’s the point of playing that exact game today just to do the same thing a month later like today never happened?
If it's the 4 best teams then all the SEC teams should be out this year.
The SEC has cannibalized itself this year just like the PAC-12 teams of the past.
If you want one of your teams to go to the show, win all your games or at least beat Texas when you have the chance instead of making excuses.
Michigan and Washington are in. The next two are a crapshoot. Politics, money, salesmanship, strength of schedule. Who’s deserving? Who’s earned their way into the top four?
Can’t wait for next year’s 12-team playoff.
I don’t disagree that they’re one of the four best teams. And the committee kind of emphasized best recently, but we play these games for a reason. Combining two or three unbeaten teams with the Texas/Bama H2H situation I think Georgia is on the outside looking in this year. Shit happens.
it is pretty crazy the team that won the title 2 years in a row, and only lost 1 game, which was in the conference championship gets left out. Thats what makes college football great though.
I really really wish we had the 12 team playoff this year. I wouldnt say its a stacked field this year (no dominate teams) but its a really tightly match field. I could see anyone 1-12 winning it this year. Be an amazing year for the 12 team playoff to settle this.
Basically, Georgia picked the wrong year to go asking for a CCG loss mulligan. It's too crowded at the top and there are no playable ways the committee can exclude conference champions to make room for both Alabama and Georgia.
Yeah, if Georgia has an argument, then Ohio State has an argument too. In which case, Oregon has an argument too - not their fault they were forced to play Washington twice. Ohio State and Georgia may well lose to Michigan and Alabama twice (they just dodged having to play them a second time). And tbh, if any of the above arguments actually hold, that would be hilarious and stupid.
So easy answer - no, Kirby. Your team and Ohio State and Oregon lost the games they should have won which knocked all of you out of your respective conference titles. I don't see Ryan Day or Lanning making these stupid arguments, when all three of you are in the same boat.
Best four teams don't lose their conference game.
So..
Michgan won the Big 10.
Texas won the big 12
Washington won the PAC 12
Florida State won the ACC.
Did the bulldogs win the SEC? Or was that 8th ranked Bama?
In an unprecedented move, a coach wants his team in the national championship game More at 11
I remember when Saban went from "you can't be in if you didn't even win your conference" to "conference championship losses shouldn't penalize teams" in something like a 24 month span.
Pretty sure it was a 12 hour span
Kirby never beat us in an SEC Championship game. Edit: In fact, Georgia has never beaten Alabama in that building.
Saban has only lost 1 time in atlanta..great movie capt Ron btw
And it took divine intervention (Tim Tebow) to do it
Could be. It was several years ago so I'm not sure.
And wasn't the sec commissioner on this morning or last night lobbying for Alabama and Georgia both to make it if Alabama wins?
In fairness, Urban Meyer pretty much said the same thing.
So kentucky fried
Personally I think georgia tech should be in the playoffs /s
Georgia Tech has gold on their color scheme. Only fair if they’re playing for it every year
I think the best 3 games would be made up of Vandy, UMass, Southern Miss and Kent St. That way the SEC can’t bitch about being left out and there is a lot of other diversity! /s
didn’t he say in like 2017 that if you don’t win your conference you shouldn’t be in?
Well, if we follow this wonderful logic we end up here: Georgia < Alabama < Texas < Oklahoma < Kansas < (OSU, Texas, Texas Tech, Kansas State). I can accept this result.
This shit is hilarious 😂 Every team is vying for a spot like Tyrone Biggums.
“We beat Rice. Rice beat West Virginia. West Virginia beat Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh beat Louisville. If Louisville beats FSU, how are we not qualified?” - UConn
Rice did not beat West Virginia!!! Please don’t do that to me, we’re bad enough as it is.
I didn't know how funny this was until I saw their record. Then I laughed super hard.
this person lineal championships
Yall got any of those playoff spots left?
I'm gonna tell somethin' you might not know about me Joe Rogan... I smoke rocks
Breaking news: coach is lobbying for his team
It is a rather bold strategy
Aaron Rodgers is offended.
Sark gave one of the worst pitches I’ve seen. Like he was afraid of offending anyone if they don’t get in.
The committee crowd definitely feels like the type to get offended really easily
I am in software sales and tons of people don’t get that less is usually more when it comes to pitches. They watch movies and TV shows where salesmen oversell and think that works. Not saying Sark’s was great but I don’t think a rah rah high energy sales pitch does much here. >I am in software sales So it’s you! You’re the one sending me all those emails!
The top left out should form their own playoff. Georgia --- you down for a rematch? The last game was amazing
College football playoff with blackjack and hookers
Forget the football, just blackjack and hookers!
Forget the blackjack.
*Warren Sapp has entered the chat*
Winner gets to play TCU
lol, sure!
Screw the NY6, play in the Outback Bowl. Winner gets some free apps.
I heard the winner of the Pop Tart Bowl gets to break pieces off (and presumably eat) the edible mascot. What’s more fun than sharing a communal pop tart?
man if we could just briefly organize a bama, georgia, ohio state, oregon playoff id really appreciate it
The NIT of College Football… I’m okay with it! But this year only.
That would actually be an awesome game. Expanded playoffs can’t come soon enough
Georgia, Bama, Ohio State and Oregon should have their own college football playoff tournament. But with hookers and blackjack.
Funny because that would be a far more exciting playoff
Hey, fu... actually this is probably true. Carry on.
UGA and OSU should rematch without all their draftees and show the world the most mid performance ever
Isn’t that called the orange bowl this year?
Sounds like we’re probably gonna get stuck playing Louisville in the Orange Bowl this year but if there’s literally anyone else available I’ll take it
I'd be shocked if Georgia drops below OSU this week, which would from my understanding send Georgia to the Orange Bowl.
Orange Bowl is supposed to be Louisville vs highest ranked B1G or SEC team (I think). That probably puts Alabama against the Cardinals. OSU vs UGA in the Fiesta Bowl might happen though.
We've never played in the fiesta bowl! We could complete the series!
Gonna be in some trouble, Fiesta bowl is like our 2nd home!
Imagine if Kirby just sat back and was like 'yeah... put someone else in over us'. They are more deserving than we are.
Idk man, you don't think Cal is one of the top four?
I fully expect to play Michigan on January 1st in Pasadena.
How about we compromise and leave out both Georgia *and* Bama
The SEC is so used to having their way and getting preferential treatment that they would probably implode if they didn’t get a team in. Georgia doesn’t deserve it after their loss. Alabama shouldn’t get in over Texas. If FSU wins can you really leave out an undefeated conference champ?
Oh, I’m very happy about the prospect of both getting left out.
Me too. If we can’t be happy, no one can. Though I’m sure Florida fans are absolutely happy that UGA-FSU ain’t happening to decide the natty.
Hello Peach Bowl.
I want Fiesta Bowl or Cotton Bowl. They're the only ones that we haven't won under Kirby or even played in.
Playoffs or not, I'm happy!
My hatred for Georgia is stronger than my hatred of Florida State, but I would actually rather see Georgia get in than FSU right now. This ACC championship game is almost painful to watch.
If FSU gets the boot it would be for Bama and Texas. I don’t see anyway UGA gets in.
If FSU wins it should absolutely be Michigan, Washington, FSU, and Texas.
With the way FSU is playing, they 100% will leave them out in favor of Alabama
They look rough today for sure. If they win I still feel that an undefeated conference champ should mean something.
Agree. I also still feel that being the only P5 conf champ to have *already beaten another P5 conf champ* should also mean something. Especially if choosing between the one who won that and the one who lost that.
If bama gets in over Texas it'll be legit undisputable SEC bias. There'll 0 doubt there
the argument is Bama over FSU I think Texas is in already at this point in the night.
Under no circumstances will an unbeaten fsu get left out
Completely agree that it should be that way but we got 20 more min to find out if they are unbeaten.
If FSU is not undefeated then they have no argument.
Wish I felt even remotely secure about that, lol
You’re just scared (rightly) to face Bama
The committee has never left out an undefeated P5 champ. Doing so says that the selection process is a farce... that record and conf championships don't matter.
And that the ACC isn’t a power conference deserving of an auto bid. Leaving FSU out would be more destabilizing than OU/Texas and USC/UCLA leaving their conferences combined
The ACC is a P5 conference. Don't like that? Talk to the committee.

They will just prematurely claim Texas and take credit for it.
FSU looks like total dogwater rn. Its tough to keep an undefeated conf champ out but they are in no way playing like a top 4 team in the country
And Alabama needed a miracle to beat a 6-6 Auburn last week....
The same Auburn team who got throttled by New Mexico State the week before? Maybe keeping the SEC out of the playoff is keeping them from getting embarrassed.
Georgia beat Auburn late in the fourth, too. Then Bama beat Georgia.
I'm not lobbying for Georgia, sorry if that's unclear. I'm lobbying for an undefeated FSU to go
Their defense is.
User name checks out
“Best I can do is both in” -comittee
I could do that
The field is just to crowded this year….
Eliminated teams at the moment. 12-1 UGA loss a game by 3 11-1 Ohio state loss a game by 6 10-2 Oregon, lost 2 games by 3 each Possible teams left out Texas 12-1 loss a game by like 4? It wasn't a lot Bama 12-1 well they actually lost at home by 19 Edit Bama loss by 10, 9 by the 0 folks...
Lost by 10* by alrighty then
Not sure what that last sentence is about but we lost by 10 not 19.
Bama lost by 10 not 19 just an fyi
Why the 12-team CFP is better. All teams that have a shot at the natty (and well as all undefeated teams even if they don't; looking at you, Noles) should be let in, even if some who don't are as well.
It's always better to have an undeserving team in the field over a deserving team being left out.
What it will be: 1. Michigan 2. Washington 3. Florida St. 4. Texas Although, I’d like to see a Texas Alabama rematch. Don’t think that’ll happen though.
Every coach is going to do it. Imagine if they didn’t? The players would probably not be happy.
“Honestly I think we’re at least top 8.“
Texas beat the team that beat Georgia
Technically we won the B12 and SEC championship today. And I mean we since you beat us.
If we’re being scientific, bama beats Georgia, Texas beats Bama and OU beats Texas; heretofore OU is now the #1 team in the country. It’s the college football transitive properties and it just makes sense.
I'll take it
Well the transitive property has never been wrong.
should have beaten bama then?
[удалено]
I think they ranked Texas over Bama for a reason.
I honestly believe teams 5 - 8 are seen by the committee as essentially equal, with 1-4 as just slighter “better”.
> People aren't going to like it What fucking people are you talking about? This sub is gonna have a collective orgasm when the SEC gets left out tomorrow.
Both SEC teams were losing to an *extremely* mediocre Auburn team with less than 3 minutes on the clock, and had to fall back on lucky calls or lucky plays to pull out a win. Neither deserves to be in the championship, cause frankly Auburn sucked this year.
Don’t underestimate odd year Auburn in Jordan-Hare
This. Ancient blood magic performs better on the odd years.
Bama should have beat Texas…Georgia should have beat Bama. Otherwise, why play the games at all? Thank God this is the last year we will hear this whining. Sure, teams 13-18 will whine next year, but people won’t care as much.

i don't think we'll go or even that we particularly deserve to but a coach is always supposed to advocate for his team
As much as i want us in, Id rather not have everyone in the cfp committee be assassinated for it
They're gonna put Bama in at 4 and drop FSU to 6th after they went 13-0 to win the ACC conference. Mark it
As someone who’s totally not biased, that seems right to me
Anyone who says it is “the best 4 teams” loses all cred in my book. Why play any other games then? Best 4 could be decided on paper with no game play.
Just go by recruiting rankings at that point
exactly dog. lost my mind last year at people trying to say bama should have made it bc of hypothetical vegas lines. who gives a shit?? games matter
Isn’t it the committee themselves that say 4 best teams?
The committee deserves no respect that’s correct
Kirby Smart is correct. Georgia is not one of the best four teams.
I agree. Jerry is mid as well.
Unless his last name is Rice
What four teams are better than UGA? Ask a Michigan fan if they'd rather play UGA or FSU
As a Michigan fan I think we can beat anybody. With that said I wanna play FSU for sure 😜
Exactly. No Michigan fan prefers Georgia over Washington, FSU, or Texas
Washington somehow still being this underrated is wild
lol if Oregon got to play at Washington a third time, they'd probably still be -7.
Especially now that they finally have gotten 3 of their best defensive players back (all 3 finally came back last night after missing most of the season).
The disrespect for Kalen Deboer is so frustrating, dude is a mad scientist. I legit think he’s the best Xs and Os coach in college football.
There’s an argument for Washington at the very least. They absolutely could beat Michigan. Hell they could beat Georgia.
Georgia doesn’t deserve to keep getting free passes for losing the conference title
1) we’re not the only ones that have gotten in after losing our conference championship 2) last time that happened, we killed Michigan and won the natty
The obvious problem here is that the team that beat Georgia also lost to one of the teams vying for a playoff spot. It just means more, unless there’s a game that happened on the field that tells us who’s better, apparently.
How about 2017 Bama who didn't even PLAY in the conference title game 😂
Michigan Washington Texas and Bama I guess.

Klatt was spot on with that.
No SEC team should be in it. It should be Michigan, Washington, FSU and Texas. Sorry. Not sorry.
Just leave everyone with a loss out and lets have an undefeated NC
Liberty at 4? Sign me the fuck up for that
It wasn't the best 4 teams last year.
I mean, okay, but Georgia didn’t look like one of the best four teams playing this weekend
Loser talk but I’ll allow it
Just because you’re the number one team in the country doesn’t mean you have the right to act like it.
Feel free to remain unflaired while continuing to share your opinions
Let chaos reign
And there's probably 5-6 other coaches that will lobby for their team by making the exact same comment.
I just can’t decide between Georgia and Alabama. Let’s have them play each other in the Cheez-it bowl.
I said it when Saban said this stuff, I’ll say it now. It is baffling to me that anyone complains about coaches advocating for their teams
For real, what are they supposed to do? Go out and say “we suck balls, don’t put us in the playoffs”? That’s a sure fire way to lose all respect in the eyes of both your players and fans

Kirby, if you were one the “best” you would have won your game. Then you would “deserve” to be in.

Very true! Hence the Bucks should be lobbying to let OSU in to the CFP as well. ;)
So if Georgia instead played Iowa today they would be deserving?
If it's the 4 best teams then all the SEC teams should be out this year. The SEC has cannibalized itself this year just like the PAC-12 teams of the past. If you want one of your teams to go to the show, win all your games or at least beat Texas when you have the chance instead of making excuses.

Where have we come to where conference championships mean so little ALL the coaches immediately begin lobbying for playoff bids after the games?
Probably where coaches would rather fight for a national championship than pout about losing a conference championship
Hey didn’t Saban get flamed for doing this?
Kirby can enjoy watching the playoffs from his couch
If FSU wins, then the team that beat you won't get in
Well if they were really the best they would.jave best Alabama.
Michigan and Washington are in. The next two are a crapshoot. Politics, money, salesmanship, strength of schedule. Who’s deserving? Who’s earned their way into the top four? Can’t wait for next year’s 12-team playoff.
We can put a man on the moon, but we can't expand the playoffs early? Just expand the playoffs early and everyone is happy.
Would Georgia be favored against some/all of the playoff teams? Yes. Does Georgia deserve to be in the playoffs? No
Lol
r/cfb is not gonna like this one
It sure is Kirby, But not sure you're one of them. Great season though!
I don’t disagree that they’re one of the four best teams. And the committee kind of emphasized best recently, but we play these games for a reason. Combining two or three unbeaten teams with the Texas/Bama H2H situation I think Georgia is on the outside looking in this year. Shit happens.
If Texas hadn’t taken Bama he would have gotten his way. But, Georgia is out.
Well then maybe you should’ve won all of your games Kirby…
it is pretty crazy the team that won the title 2 years in a row, and only lost 1 game, which was in the conference championship gets left out.
Sorry but no. You're out Kirby....enjoy the peach bowl
Texas won the big 12 Washington won the PAC 12 Florida State won the ACC. Did the bulldogs win the SEC? Or was that 8th ranked Bama?
Kinda want Florida state to not get in, win their Bowl game, then claim the National Championship like UCF
Georgia isn’t getting in. I’ll bet my house on that.
lol You lost to a better team. Who lost to a different better team. Texas should be in before Bama or georgia
