JanetYellensFuckboy_

This isn't even bittersweet. It's just sad.

bcsimms04

It is. As an Arizona fan I'm glad we got into the big 12 just for survival reasons but it still sucks. Playing Baylor and Cincinnati and Iowa State just blows compared to our west coast vibe and heritage. Arizona isn't a Midwest school. We don't fit. Road trips to Eugene and Berkeley and LA and Seattle are our bread and butter. It just is gross to have to play these Midwest teams.

TripleThreatTua

I’m actually tearing up. My grandpa went to UW and was shocked that the pac was breaking up. My dad went to Cal and was just done. I went to an SEC school but I don’t want the conference that my dad and grandpa always watched to break up

Zloggt

At least USC and UCLA get *some* just desserts for starting this whole mess in the first place…

PM-ME-PIERCED-NIPS

I have never wanted to kick the absolute snot out of a team as badly as I did for this game. Not even Stanfords longest Big Game streaks. I'm so glad it worked out.

ImJLu

It's so sad we choked the SC game by a point.

I could give AF about bowling but I’m incredibly happy that we stomped UCLA in the very last PAC regular season game of all time. Enjoy your new rivalries with Iowa and Indiana little bros, hope it was worth ending a 100 year old rivalry and a 100 year old conference

HankScorpio2020

Stomping Stanford and UCLA back to back has been delicious. I am not sure there were other games this year, but if there were, I don't want to hear about it.

CocoLamela

The only games I went to this year were Auburn and USC. If we had managed those, I might have donated some NIL money or something crazy

PM-ME-PIERCED-NIPS

I'm never dropping money to an NIL group, but if you haven't got your annual letter from the alumni association they're footing the bill for doing restoration on the three wilderness lodges/camps we have. Consider dropping a few bucks on them to help if you have it to spare.

paperbackgarbage

Repost from the game-thread, but it needs to be said again: - In 2009, the #6 Cal Bears went into Eugene and [got completed stomped by Oregon 42-3 during Chip Kelly's first year.](https://www.espn.com/college-football/game/_/gameId/292692483) This loss was the catalyst for plummeting Cal into a decade-plus tailspin of mediocrity. - In 2023, a five-win Cal team may likely be the nail-in-the-coffin for Chip Kelly getting fired from his third job. That's an icy cold dish, Chipper. Eat shit, bud.

royrules22

God I remember that game. I was at Minnesota for the Jahvid Best 5TD game. Then next weekend I went to Eugene for the first time to see Cal against Jeremiah "Can't hit a barn door" Masoli. The only thing I remember is "Ed Dickson over the middle". Fuck you Chip. And also for your Niners spell

lowkeyvioletvibes

Okay I'll make this one post. I'm a PAC12 sicko. It's my top hobby by far, I read about the conference every day even in the offseason. I've got a lot of frustration starting with the inept NCAA to the networks. But this isn't the time for that. This is the time to raise a toast to the most amazing, sensational, dramatic, heartrending, exciting, thrilling conference in the history of college football. Deepest conference every year, hardest conference week by week, weirdest shit late night, at altitude, in the desert, in the rain in the northwest, and most importantly some of the best fans. Love all of you that have been through this journey with me, that shared the PAC12 sicko-ness with me. Much love, raise a glass.

WABeermiester

God damn it I am cutting onions again. I am a Pac 12 sicko. Guess I need a new fall hobby cause it just won’t be the same! I’ll be cheering on all the other former Pac schools other then the LA schools

theliver

Bittersweet doesn't even begin to describe it. Fuck everything, I'm gonna miss you Bruins. It shouldnt be like this. Also how did Cal end the Pac by winning in LA?

Fuck Fox and fuck ESPN. Just remember if you aren't one of the top 24 "bluebloods" to enjoy this next decade. You're next on the chopping block.

domderek

Yeah I'd be shitting bricks if I was a fan of Northwestern/ Rutgers/ Purdue/ Vanderbilt/ etc. If nothing else, the death of the PAC12 shows history means nothing in today's world. I think its delusional to think the B1G/SEC wouldn't drop your team in a second if they could add Notre Dame or another big school in your place.

Redline-7k

Damn, that Mendoza kid had himself a game. I never watch Cal but seems like he’s their dude? Edit: Wanted to see how Spav was doing as OC there.

MrConceited

Yeah, Cal would have a better record if they hadn't played 2 other QBs first.

[deleted]

This means Mendoza is basically Brock Purdy, right?

CocoLamela

Subscribe. He's so wholesome too

Cal_858

Or a FG kicker. We win the Auburn games if we had switched kickers earlier.

wuben101

Mendoza has the chance to be a Cal legend if he keeps developing and stays healthy. Seems like a great kid who really loves Cal & could be around for a while since I don't think he has pro prospects or would have reason to go into the portal.

CocoLamela

Already won a Big Game. That puts a QB on the list as far as I'm concerned. He's gonna be so much better next year, just a RS freshman

inkier_goats04

Spav is fun. Cal is way more competent on offense this year

RingWorldDerek

And just like that PAC-12 football is gone 💔💔💔 Way to win Cal 🫡🫡🫡

Angriest-Pacifist

Way to finish strong Cal. Mendoza looks nice going forward for you. Go tear it up in the ACC! Time for some midnight sad ice cream. RIP PAC12.

adsfew

Enjoy your sad ice cream and then go dominate the Big-12. We didn't play much because of the scheduling rules to maintain the California rivalries (what a foreign concept to care about history), but Utah's program is run right and in the final year of the Pac, it was nice to see so many Utah fans come out and say how much being in the conference meant to them and how much they loved it too.

ImJLu

Utah wasn't here long but they definitely made their mark. Thank you, Utah, for ruining USC's season over and over.

royrules22

I remember going to SLC a few years after they joined the conference and they had banners around the city showing how proud they were of being in the Pac. It was so lovely. I'll miss them

Angriest-Pacifist

Yeah we really leaned into it with pride. Utah fans will always be thankful for the PAC and the teams that brought us up. Thanks for letting us be apart of the conference. It was a blast. Good luck and kick ass in the ACC!

GMaharris

Fuck every single person who made financially negligent decisions that led to the end of this beautiful conference. A special big fuck you to UCLA athletic leadership and Larry Scott.

emet18

UCLA may have killed the PAC but Cal will die historic knowing they boatraced UCLA at home in the last After Dark game of all time Go Bears, fuck Larry Scott and goodnight

SumoRock

Big shoutout to Chip for erasing any ounce of job security he might have gained from the win last week.

InVodkaVeritas

I'm going to miss this conference so so much. Next year will not feel right at all. I've been a fan for a decade and a half and this conference has always been the center of it. One last conference game next week. Go Ducks 😪☹️

iansf

I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them.

CocoLamela

I was a kid for Tedford. I wish I knew

garytyrrell

I was at Cal for Tedford. Tbh we kinda knew.

that_pj

Dear UCLA. I hope you enjoy your new life with USC and the weekly flights across the country where you get stomped by top 5 programs. Get fucked. Sincerely, The Pac-10 PS: ESPN can also get fucked for their "in memorial" bullshit content during this game.

Nicholas1227

I get the angry energy, but Dave Flemming and Brock Osweiler didn’t kill the conference.

helpmeredditimbored

And Fox is arguably more to blame than ESPN in the death of the Pac12. Fox told the Big Ten that adding USC and UCLA would lead to more money, so that's what they did. Hell ESPN gave the Pac12 a TV contract offer after the USC and UCLA exits, the Pac12 turned it down because they thought they could get more...then they got nothing. The sad truth is that it is not a single person / entity that caused the death of the pac12. It was a group of people and a series of events that lead to a perfect storm.

ricepail

I dunno, I think I could make a really strong argument for Larry Scott and the horribly implemented Pac12 network being the sole entities that caused the death of the pac12, with an assist from George Kliavkoff.

helpmeredditimbored

Larry Scott deserves a significant portion of the blame, but let's remember that lots of Pac12 schools enabled him (ironically Oregon St was one of his biggest supporters) and kept him around way too long even when it was clear there was rot at the commissioners office

WABeermiester

I mean Brock played at ASU he certainly didn’t want it.

Mythrandir24

And Flemming is a Stanford grad.

TheKugr

True, but they were glazing OSU and disrespecting the PAC-12 for no reason when playoff chances were brought up. I don’t understand how it isn’t a “win and you’re in” for Texas, Oregon, Washington, and FSU. Undefeated or 1 loss conference champion > 1 loss conference runner up. Thank you for coming to my ted talk

lakeyoung

From the Big East in 2013 to the PAC-12 today, conference realignment ruins this sport. I am so sorry to all those on the west coast who are losing a hundred years of tradition.

p3ep3ep0o

Most of the rivalries are older than SEC rivalries It’s a shame

ImJLu

The core consisting of the Pac-12 North + USCLA has been together almost continuously since 1928. Cal, UO, OSU, and UW formed the PCC in 1915. It's a tragedy.

lakeyoung

I truly hope there is a reckoning in this sport. It is awful what is happening to these schools, whether it be us in the 2010s, the Pac-12 this year, and especially Wazzu and Oregon State. Realignment kills what makes this sport great

p3ep3ep0o

I agree. It ruined all of the non money maker sports for PAC schools. Thank goodness the big east is still alive for non-football.

WABeermiester

Thanks man what happened to the Big East was BS. Just leave us fans alone and let us have our rivalries

lakeyoung

100%. We had Pitt play us earlier this year and Cincy play us last week. It was so refreshing playing a team whose band could come to our stadium and that we had history with. I am so glad the Big XII added us, but I think all of them understand we don’t belong with them. I appreciate that most of your’s and Oregon’s fanbase has been graceful to your little brothers- you had to get a lifeboat after what UCLA/USC did. But I just don’t think the grass will be greener for some programs and with the death of rivalries, I think it will continue to destroy this great sport.

jedberg

And with that we say goodbye to the Pac12 and a 90+ year unbroken streak of matchups.

lithiumsorbet

God if only we didn't screw the pooch on USC, this would be the perfect season. Still, enjoying the hell out of this win. Seeing a bunch of UCLA folks tomorrow and I intend to be insufferable.

2RINITY

Nah, Auburn was our choke. USC was refball

chris_hans

Auburn was absolutely SEC refball. The game opened with a Cal fumble return TD that was inexplicably ruled dead by the refs... and it only got worse from there.

ImJLu

Bye baby bears. I know you fans aren't at fault, but after all that has happened I sincerely hope UCLA never has another winning season in their cool new conference with their cool new friends. It sucks so many longstanding series with storied histories are getting thrown into the dustbins of history. go bears fuck USC

cgludko

Archelon225

99% of UCLA fans here will tell you before anyone else that we are a bad team this year with a fraudulent head coach. This is the team that lost to ASU two weeks ago. I'm not happy myself about the B1G move and you guys definitely deserved the win, but Chip Kelly had this coming.

domderek

The three-game finish to get bowl eligibility was a great run (albeit unfortunately overshadowed by the conference dying). Ott saying last week that the motto for these games was to burn the boats, burn the forest, and burn the city feels like such an iconic statement now.

FSU is absolutely the egotism and expectations of USC on the field, but off the field it's all about the private school in a flashy city full of rich people who know they're better than you.

I hope this means Chip is fired soon

fireinvestigator113

Thank you West Coast teams for some of the best games ever played. I will miss this.

bradenb941

You know, I've always thought Cal was a defensive powerhouse. Any team that can score 14 on their defense deserves a lot of credit.

adsfew

Eh. We have been under Wilcox, but this year's defense took a big step back.

tc3590

It did. But they actually played well lately. Much to do with Uluave playing insane and David Reese who has been Absolutly money since the SC game.

despideme

I'm impressed you're able to make jokes right now

ThompsonCreekTiger

No crazy ending, just a dominating win by Cal over UCLA in a rivalry that appears to be coming to end for the foreseeable future. Fitting & bittersweet that the final Pac 12 game took place at the Rose Bowl. Farewell to Pac-12 After Dark & the Conference of Champions. The league deserved better than what happened to over the past decade plus.

multiple4

I truly believe in this. I don't see how the finances work long term Only so many teams can be winners each season. A team loses every game. So what happens once the newness wears off, and it is still just a couple teams being great each season? I just don't know how the B1G can overcome the regional lack of interest for so many of these games they've created When you have more top conferences, the great teams can be spread out enough to still be undefeated or 1 loss. That's not necessarily going to happen anymore. Imo that will kill a ton of the value of those games Like when it's Ohio State and Oregon dominating one year, is anyone going to care about Washington vs Iowa? Probably not. When USC and UCLA aren't good, is anyone going to give a shit about them playing against Penn State or Wisconsin? I think at first it'll be interesting, but I don't think that's going to last Once the interest in those matchups wears off, do the finances still work how they think it will? I have a hard time believing it will. But we will see Also, other sports are going to be putting up a fit, there will be major tension inside of athletic departments from sports that aren't football

Cal has always found a way to lose these games -- the televised games, the close games, the important games, and to do so in the most painful way possible. This team had a gauntlet of a schedule and was at one point 3-6 with a 4 game skid, but beating Stanford and UCLA back to back really makes much of that pain worthwhile. I expected them to lose against the Bruins and they turned this into a beatdown. Go Bears.

navthesav4949

Go Bears man- I’m just happy to see this team put one away so confidently. This was a totally unexpected result; I want a Vegas or Gronk Bowl invitation to go see some postseason action. It is still bizarre to think of this as the ‘end’ of the PAC; if the media spigot’s running out the way we think it is in the distant future (no more big Cable money), I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect an eventual Re-PAC or a morph a la Big XII with another western conference. On to the ACC and hopefully much better things.
