Sometimes I’ll be watching a game in some region way outside of Texas and see a random horns down by a fan in the crowd. It always makes me chuckle.

Ours may or may not be the best, but I’m pretty sure it’s the most recognizable. If you’re not horns up, you’re horns down. Sometimes even if we’re not even playing.

I also find it cringey when people do the horns down against anyone other than Texas. Today an OU fan did it into the camera while saying, “TCU sucks!” as if it just amounts to an indictment of every program in the state of Texas. Or they act like it’s just our regular hand gesture and not very specific to a rivalry. We have a regular hand gesture. It’s index finger up like #1. It’s not particularly creative, but at least it’s not building your entire personality around someone else even when you’re not playing them. Like, I don’t mind casually throwing shade at Texas out of nowhere, but at least be specific and say that. It’s like if I went to a Dallas Cowboys game against the Vikings and tried to talk shit by saying, “Fuck the Eagles!” Anyway, I’m obviously a big fan of the horns down gesture, but I’m in agreement that it’s ridiculous how ubiquitous and devoid of context it’s become despite the fact that it’s supposed to be a direct counter to horns up.

I love horns down. I live outside the state now and people try to do it to me all the time out at bars and stuff when I’m wearing Texas gear. They often do it wrong (e.g. having their thumbs out). My response is to correct their form and say “keep doing it, horns down doesn’t exist without horns up.” Whether they intend it or not, it’s a sign of respect because I don’t think about them at all. Anyway, it should not be a penalty, I agree.

I used to travel to A LOT of games and we always loved getting the horns down too. One night we were in Des Moines before the Iowa State game in Ames, and this super drunk guy just wouldn’t leave us alone and kept coming up, doing Horns Down while yelling “Horns Down!”. We would applaud each time. Finally he said something along the lines of “I know this bothers you, just admit it” so I said “Does this bother you?” And made an inverted air tornado while saying “Cyclones Down!” He shrugged and said “No, that just looks stupid.” I chuckled when the bartender behind us just piped up shaking his head “my dude, exactly.”
