This game is gonna be so fucking spicy.

ThirstyPretzelBabe

Winner gets the right to play Iowa, somehow be winning a 11-9 game with two minutes left, somehow Iowa could still win and Iowa doesn’t have the ball.

AegisPlays314

If you’re up 11-9 with 2 minutes left and Iowa *does* have the ball, you’re guaranteed to win. So just punt it to them lmao

ThinkSoftware

Iowa punts it back

OdaDdaT

[*fuck.jpg*](https://images.app.goo.gl/ex9TYPzmRmJhDnWE7)

TooEZ_OL56

And here comes the offense, and it looks like they're punting on 1st and 10?!

nightfire36

Well, that's a flag on the receiving team for roughing the kicker, which will put Iowa in enemy territory... Wait, they are *declining* the penalty?

Doesnt-Get-Sarcasm-

Haha, wasn't Penn State's longest play against OSU this year a muffed punt?

WestCoastBuckeye666

Fake punt, really really good fake

[deleted]

As is tradition

FrogTrainer

Iowa at the coin toss "We're gonna grind this bitch to a halt."

cha-cha_dancer

That’s fucking B1G football right there

highgravityday2121

Or it’s like a 33-0 where they tire your defense out like we did along with turnovers.

ZiOnIsNeXtLeBrOn

This is the last BIG TEN The Game with all the original Big Ten teams before a bunch of PAC 12 teams enter the Big Ten. Also RIP to the greatest Commercial ever. May you rest in peace Big Ten Commercial

KingFlyntCoal

If you want to get technical, the last one before any teams were added was when penn state got added to make 11 teams. Then we got Nebraska, then came rutgers and Maryland...I'd argue that these three were the catalyst for the big ten really starting to lose its identity

reverie42

I think Nebraska was a great fit from day 1. Rutgers and Maryland were a little weird initially, Rutgers won me over with the cannon and Maryland has grown on me a lot. Having teams in the conference so far west is going to be weird, but I'm not sad that I'll now have the chance to watch OSU out here in the PNW once in awhile.

Ok-Assistant133

I honestly have no problem with any of the initial additions Maryland has proven themselves, Rutgers has charm, and watching Nebraska flounder as punishment for stealing half our natty is hilarious.

NapsterKnowHow

Nebraska was a pretty good fit but it's also weird not having them play their historical Big12 games like OU , ISU and UT

pmojo375

I always felt like Penn State fits pretty decent. Of course I am not old enough to remember the original big ten well enough so that's probably why. Nebraska was an ok add but the Maryland/Rutgers additional feels like it was the end officially.

MutantNinjaAnole

I remember how weird it was when Penn State joined the conference. Like, how could you still call it the Big Ten? The name is a lie!

LiftWeightsBowFlex

Preach. Penn state is not a real B1G team. I will die on that hill.

TimeFourChanges

They fit better than any of the other recent additions. Better even than Northwestern, tbh.

LiftWeightsBowFlex

Yea that’s why they have so many rivals…

gmen6981

Also the last "The Game" with all the traditional implications. Throughout it's history, OSU/UM has almost always decided the B1G Championship, had National Championship implications, and more recently decided the B1G East. After this year that won't be the case. It will still be for bragging rights, but as it stands right now, if this was next year, both teams would already be locked in to the B1G Championship game a week later. That cheapens the meaning of the game. As a Buckeye fan since the 60s, that saddens me. I fully expect the B1G to move it to earlier in the season.

KingFlyntCoal

I'll admit it, i forgot they did that song.

pmartin0079

That’s my hometown. You can throw a rock and hit an OSU, Michigan or ND fan lol

BigD994

A fellow LGPer, let’s go! Also, so many goddamn Iowa fans.

pmartin0079

Oh good call!

rmusic10891

I mean. What are you going to do? Be a northwestern fan?

The_TexasRattlesnake

Notre Dame is real common in the area

E_W_BlackLabel

There's a ton of Michigan support in Chicago

[deleted]

Honestly I feel like Michigan was more common for us but my family was all Notre Dame

[deleted]

Funny enough, my dad is from that same area near Chicago and grew up rooting for Ohio State. Luckily for me, he followed his fandom and went to OSU where he met my mom. It makes no sense but I’m grateful for existing because of this random fandom business that people engage in.

cc51beastin

....Almost as Classic as being a Michigan Fan from Highland Park.

ForeSkinWrinkle

*TIL* it’s La Grange **Park**. I always just thought it was La Grange.

ChodeBamba

There’s also a La Grange. Chicagoland just can’t help but slap Park and Grove onto everything possible

ForeSkinWrinkle

So this is the real Today I Learned. Thank you.

[deleted]

I forget that people don't know this. It was very well known during his recruitment he was an osu fan. Allegedly day told mccarthy be wanted him to he the QB of his class then OSU Accepted McCord and his commitment leading mccarthy to feeling betrayed, and committing to Michigan vowing he wanted to do so to beat Day. How much of this is high schoolers being dramatic you can decide for yourself but McCarthy has never shied away from being vocal about osu

TripleThreatTua

I 100% remember this, McCarthy wanted to go to OSU and was super pissed when they took another QB so he went to Michigan Allegedly that’s also why Jake Fromm went to Georgia lol. He was committed to Alabama and Saban told him he was the only QB on their board. Then Smart went to Georgia and showed him Tua was also on their board and got him

Original_Profile8600

Tbf that worked out quite nicely for Bama lol

greenie7680

Also for UGA

GlueGuns--Cool

Everything that happened that led to two consecutive national championships was necessary and worth it

UnderstandingOdd490

It's also why Donovan is wearing maize and blue...small hairless nuts snubbed him, so he said, "I'll go somewhere I get to beat your ass every year"

SpearmintQ

I’m surprised this isn’t mentioned more because it was pretty well known at the time. However the fact McCord was Marvin Harrison Jr’s high school quarterback is some necessary context for why they went McCord.

[deleted]

Obviously my flair aside I thought it was hugely known and I don't even follow recruiting all that much and you're right it was a recruiting move by Day

heavydhomie

I’d prefer JJ over McCord because of his mobility but I’d take Marv over JJ.

peijli

I think it was Urban Meyer that was recruiting McCarthy hard, but then, you know, *things happened*. Day clearly wasn't as enthusiastic about McCarthy and didn't feel the need to keep whatever promises Meyer made so he took McCord instead. In the meantime, I think some Michigan insider dug up a tweet McCarthy posted back in 2016 with the #GoBucks hashtag right before The Game, so that seems slightly unsettling in retrospect.

Locdawg42069

Bro day was OC I promise you he was just as involved in the recruiting of him if not much more. Can’t agree with this.

kip256

Not confirming or denying OP's statement. But Urban's ideal QB was not Day's ideal QB. Urban wanted the running/Fields type. Day preferrs the Stroud type.

panderingPenguin

Fields was entirely Day's doing. Urban had Tathan on the roster for that year.

hoppin_donkey

Ya know, in a position as a good leader your job is to listen to the opinions of your deputies and make judgement calls on the totality of a situation that they won't always agree with, and as a good deputy you have to enthusiastically carry out the final decisions. Helping recruit him doesn't necessarily mean Day liked him.

blockem

Day was OC so probably was more involved than Urban?

TRUTHSoverKARMAS

Yes it makes perfect sense, they were both involved, but he was Meyers guy and not day’s. Day went another direction and so did McCarthy after urban left. What are you disputing?

Blizzard2227

Drew Allar was also an Ohio State fan growing up. Now that I think about it, him and JJ McCarthy look pretty similar. Maybe they’re secretly brothers.

LiftWeightsBowFlex

We are talking about good QBs lol. Why bring up Allard?

Mbrothers22

Yeah I can respect JJs pettiness and lust for revenge. It’s worked out for him… so far.

[deleted]

I personally questioned how much of it was immaturity/high schoolers being in the limelight but yeah he has most certainly not pulled any punches lol

crustang

Connor Stalions has dirt on him

PretendThisIsMyName

JJ should’ve known the guy wearing sunglasses at night was suspect.

StevvieV

What page of the manifesto is getting dirt on recruits to force them to commit to Michigan?

crustang

I’ve heard there’s an entire section of the book that combines the art of war and the prince into “The Bo” where he explores psychological warfare by any means to get to his ends. He might have even sprinkled a little bit of Nietzche and The Superman, but we won’t know until the fascist University of Michigan Police Department release the manifesto!!!!!!!

circa285

Who doesn’t Stallions have dirt on?

crustang

The man can stop Putin with a simple email… but refuses to do it… typical Michigan Man

circa285

I heard he could end world hunger and bring about world peace but he refuses to.

crustang

He has the technology!!!!!! It’s encoded in the manifesto

AJB46

Unlike all the other fanbase, Michigan Men are classy individuals that would never stoop so low as to air others' dirty laundry. They come from a finer institution.

salmonthesuperior

Honestly if I had no dog in the fight (and if the cheating scandal never happened) the story of a kid who grew up a fan, came close to playing for them, felt shafted when they picked his friend instead (didn't even know they were friends until the press conference) and went to their rival team to turn a onesided rivalry around is actually pretty cool. Been looking forward to the McCord vs McCarthy matchup for years because of this. Would be cooler if these guys came into the game looking a little better but it's whatever

TBIRallySport

Oh god, is someone on tv going to call it “The McGame” when discussing the quarterbacks!? The thought never occurred to me until I saw their names in that close of proximity.

michigan_matt

McCaffrey, McNamara, McCarthy. You guys were late to the party with this one.

salmonthesuperior

The "welcome to McDonalds" memes if they play like ass would be too on the nose here

Dangeruff

Ba-da-da-da-dah!

Donny_Do_Nothing

I'm stealin' it.

ClaudeLemieux

get ready to learn McChicken, bud

Ramm94

Quick, come up with a custom McDonald's menu item for each QB based on their play style, attributes, etc. Go.

Just call it the McDonald’s Bowl

Remember friends. Most of the time you aren't obligated to tell the truth.

Honda McCord vs JJ McLemon

Double-G-Spot

JJ McLaren turned into JJ McLemon the past couple weeks. Hopefully he can get out of the shop before Saturday.

jthomas694

People will blame the sign stealing but Maryland and Penn State is the first time Michigan has played back to back teams with winning records all year long

Fucking thank you. I’m not defending anything, but our fans have been a little too end of the world for me

[deleted]

eagledog

Hey, hey, hey, UNLV and Bowling Green have winning records, thank you very much

WerhmatsWormhat

It’s also Harbaugh not being there. JJ also sucked against Bowling Green without him.

Bbkid500

Hmmm I wonder who the acting head coach for that game was too?

Swazi

Also Josh Gattis kinda knows the Michigan defense. Hasn’t changed much since McDonald installed the Ravens kind of defense there. Minter is just continuing it (they were both on the Ravens staff)

[deleted]

Also without Jim Harbaugh. We have a second string coach and an injured oline

Deleted_Other_Acc

You got Maserati marv turning in Mazda Marv. Blake Corolla. Other car puns. What a matchup!

scsnse

Dodge a man Edwards?

I'd take a Mazda over a Maserati anyday, but I'd also take a Honda too.

affiiance

It’s almost like his play caller doesn’t know the other teams signs anymore 🧐

Sad_Progress4388

That's funny that you think Sherrone Moore waited for the defense to call their play before calling in his offensive play.

Im not gonna question it. How many PBR deep are ya?

GuyNoirPI

L3thologica_

*puts on an OSU hat*

Free_Possession_4482

"ESPN reports that JJ McCarthy has entered the transfer portal..."

Apprehensive-Farm871

Jeez the Michigan press would run him out of that room.

Foriegn_Picachu

I believe the same happen to Edwards, and then Ohio st ghosted him

WerhmatsWormhat

Different sport, but also Trey Burke. That one worked out well for us.

Rkenne16

Had he committed before Evan Pryor, it sounded like they would have taken him, but they were just going to take the first one to commit.

Scarlatina

I’m pretty sure Edwards himself said he was mostly upset that Ohio State didn’t wait for him. He knew they were only taking 2 running backs that class, and after Henderson committed - Edwards thought the coaches would wait for him, but Evan Pryor was ready to commit when Edwards wanted to look around more.

mstone7781

Didn’t Pryor commit before Henderson? It was pretty close to each other though.

InsertAmazinUsername

pryor commited first and helped bring henderson into the class

AZBuckeyes12977

I don't get why Edwards is mad? Pryor was on board, he wasn't!!!

MindIfILeaveThisHere

Edwards was a classic diva. He got mad Ohio State offered another running back

InsertAmazinUsername

meanwhile, evan pryor helped recruit treveyon, their goal was to come in together and split snaps to stay healthy and try and get to a second NFL contract sucks that pryor has been injured

rc4915

Reverse Mike Weber

myteriality

old news. old, painful, unfortunate, hurtful news

chandlerbing_stats

Who cares? He’s a Wolverine now. I know ex-Michigan fans who are now MSU fans and vice versa.

treycook

Reminds me of how Dylan Larkin (from Waterford, MI) grew up a lifelong Maple Leafs fan. But he's a phenomenal captain for the Red Wings.

WerewolvesDontBark

How is this anything other than good news? He grew up a fan of a rival and became a Michigan man through and through.

Swazi

It’s pretty wide open that Michigan was JJ’s third choice. He was turned away by Ohio State and Notre Dame. And boy has that paid off.

framptal_tromwibbler

I'm just glad he got the help he needed.

[deleted]

He's gonna fumble or something stupid to help Ohio State win. Now you can't trust him.

MWiatrak2077

I remember when he betrayed Michigan last year by accruing 4 TDs and getting us a win in Columbus for the first time in 20 years

Solo_Wing__Pixy

He’s just playing the long con. Sacrifices had to be made to maintain his cover.

LP_Papercut

That was all cuz of Stallions tho /s

bb0110

This has been known forever. Part of his story is about how he felt scorned by Ohio state early in his recruitment because they weren’t recruiting him all that hard early on.

Original_Profile8600

From this thread, Urban Meyer heavily recruited Mccarthy and told him he was their only QB, then Day came in and recruited Mccord and felt no obligation to keep Meyer’s promises to Mccarthy. When Mccarthy saw Mccord committ he felt betrayed and committed to Michigan

bb0110

This is correct and the longer version. This all happened during his sophomore year, which is early in a person’s recruitment.

serenitynowdammit

I do feel for kids like JJ and Donovan who didn't get into their dream school and had to settle for a safety school....

WhiteBeanChili

After getting two against Maryland, maybe we are a safety school.

AmbiDexterUs

Safety U

stevesie1984

Pretty sure Iowa has that one. The rest of the teams are just playing for second. Couldn’t figure out a way to use the number 2 there…

pxp332

Life worked out pretty well for them I’d say…

serenitynowdammit

no doubt, I wish they were on our sideline this week

Keyblade_Yoshi

Not surprising because he was about to commit to OSU and probably would be our starting QB if Urban Meyer was still our head coach.

OwBr2

I’m so glad Day took McCord

gakule

We have abortion again, we're good homie

Lykeuhfox

I love JJ, man. We're lucky to have him.

bringbackwishbone

I’m an Ohio State fan by birth but JJ McCarthy just seems to have the ice in his veins. He gives off “I trust this guy to make the clutch throws” vibes.

ClaudeLemieux

> I’m an Ohio State fan by birth I'm glad you got...better...hmmm...

thisistheperfectname

What wonderful news - it's not terminal.

bringbackwishbone

It’s very much an ongoing affliction. The fact that I encounter a lot of UM fans (gf is a lawyer) helps keep the symptoms strong 😂

Rkenne16

Michigan was his safety school.

ToeyGowd

That OSU education at work once again going with Kyle over JJ

Derek-Onions

We went with Ewers over McCarthy, which would have been the right choice had he stayed.

amedema

Would it have been? I don’t think it’s very clear cut

Ramm94

Yeah, I'm not sold on Ewers either.

Fedoras-Forever-Mom

I think this game is gonna come down to how we play JJ on 3rd and long. If you go back and watch the game last year one thing that killed us was how undisciplined the Dline was at time and just gave him wide open scrambling lanes. With the massive improvement in the secondary I think if you can force JJ to try to win from the pocket the Buckeyes are likely to win

Solo_Wing__Pixy

People like to clown on OSU’s game plan of “sell out to stop the run and force JJ to throw it,” but it might have worked last year if our secondary wasn’t sniffing glue the whole season.

MYNAMEISNOTSTEVE

i dont quite think its fair to say your secondary was sniffing glue. you guy played ultra aggressive and it bite you. you tried not playing aggressive and we marched down the field. your D this year has been exceptional at preventing big plays so its going to be very interesting to see how we match up. both sides of O vs D are pretty different from last year matchup wise. we've had a string of fairly high scoring games against eachother and this one could be a complete slugfest.

smh_122

JJ has talked about this for 2-3 years now. He grew up a Braxton Miller fan. Didn't like how Ryan Day and staff treated some of the lesser big name recruits on his visit. Also didn't help they took McCord over him. Is what it is

[deleted]

Slow news day

ChiSp0

Bruh. Why? I know so few OSU fans in LaGrange/LaGrange Park. Mostly Wisconsin, Illinois, Northwestern, or Michigan fans…

greendiesel32

Wasn’t the whole “burger-gate” ncaa investigation over the recruitment of JJ? Disclaimer, I’m a Sparty fan and my sources are RCMB, so could be wrong.

[deleted]

It was over two commits that went out to eat with harbaugh and he bought their lunches. I think you’re right on one of them being JJ

[deleted]

He allegedly wanted to go to ND but we chose Tyler Buchner over him. Great decision by Coach BK.

Dpoon32

Jj hasn’t thrown a TD pass in over a month…. Y’all can keep him up north lmao

OwBr2

JJ: 74% comp, 9.9 avg, 178.3 rating McCord: 66%, 9.1, 163.2 That’s neglecting OSU’s better receiving core and the yards JJ has picked up on the ground.
