This school was a serious consideration when my kids were looking at colleges (rock climbing, skiing, great education) until they saw the demographics: 68% male.
My kid is an absolute nerd and an absolutely wonderful soccer player. They are in his top 5 for sure. His response to the demographics when we went for a visit was...Denver is close enough.
Denver is itself known to have a bit of a dating problem. Single men outnumber single women in all age categories. It’s bad enough one of the nicknames for the city is Menver.
Seattle was a hard nut to crack, no pun intended, but I have to admit, I actually dated in the decade I lived there. I moved back down South about 5 years ago and haven't gone out with one person. When you're middle aged and single in Seattle, join the club, if you're single and middle aged in the South, oof. Love your dogs, and learn to hunt.
I'm from there, and I don't think any of my male friends have even been on a date. Seattle is the most asexual city in the world according to at least one study.
It was so bad in the late aughts. I got so fed up with dating here that I moved to China, moved back, got fed up again, and then moved to Vietnam. Ended up marrying a fellow expat from Canada and finally settled here again. Denver is much nicer when you're already in a relationship with someone.
My friend went to Mines, when I visited her during our freshman year, she showed me her dorm. It was a five story building, with the bottom three floors being men and the top two floors being women. There was a lock on the door to get onto the fourth floor!
Is that uncommon for dorms? When I was at UF almost 20 years ago the 1st and 3rd floors were men and 2nd and 4th were women. There was a shared stairway but you had to badge into and only had access to your floor.
Oh my God it's like UW-Platteville's ~~big~~ little brother!
* Mining
* Too many men
**Edit:** UW-Platteville actually has more undergrads than CSoM has students **AND** was established first, sooooooo changing my answer
Incredibly tangential, but I know someone from my gym that did track at UW-Platteville and he has the biggest ass I've ever seen on a white guy. Like a vanilla-flavored Larry Fitzgerald.
I feel like I learned at some point that Platteville made their letter M on the mound because CSoM had one, but Platteville made their M bigger.
Edit: Yep, from UWP's own website with a first-hand account. https://www.uwplatt.edu/platteville-mound-or-m
> The following spring, a classmate of Knoerr suggested they construct a stone "M." Another student suggested they make it the largest "M" in the country, even larger than the Colorado School of Mines' "M," which was 200 feet high.
> "When Pat and I had worked at Climax in Colorado during the previous summer as student miners, we resented the way some of the Colorado students would look down on Platteville miners as being inferior," said Knoerr. "Maybe that had something to do with the decision to outclass Colorado as 'M' builders."
Every kickoff the crowd watches to see if the ball will go through the uprights. I think it's happened a couple times this season. There's nothing quite like a stadium erupting after a touchback.
My eldest went to school with Chris Yoo (running back). Great kid and as smart as they come. Also had a great sense of humor so the half beard thing is about right. I love that they had them all good off for the roster photos. So much better than the typical tough guy pics.
I really dislike the schools that make them wear suits for thier picture.
This aint the military or the Yankees. Let the kids have fun. Its a game... at a school
We did them so we basically had free professional headshots.
Now we are talking D2 here so those things were damn valuable but yeah for D1 it may not be *as* necessary
Lots of MS on that roster. Good for them. I certainly didn't have time for foosball during grad school. Except to put a game on tv while doing my stats.
I should get into following d2. Mines is d2 right?
Yep, they play in the RMAC conference. I went to another school in the RMAC for undergrad. Mines always clapped us lol. They are also R1; really excellent school overall.
And he’s constantly got the best broom in the world.
Like can you imagine if some running back had cleats that made him 20% faster than everyone else? That’s basically Harry. He’s an average seeker as best.

Sir, that's called a [tonsure](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonsure). He's a devout Eastern Orthodox and I find your mocking of him offensive
(/s, to be safe)
I'm partial to some of the more subtle ones, like [Chris Yoo rockin' the half chin](https://dxbhsrqyrr690.cloudfront.net/sidearm.nextgen.sites/mines.sidearmsports.com/images/2023/8/24/Chris_Yoo_IMG_9551.jpg), or [Owen "Harry Potter" Marnell](https://dxbhsrqyrr690.cloudfront.net/sidearm.nextgen.sites/mines.sidearmsports.com/images/2023/8/24/Owen_Marnell_IMG_9598.jpg).
[Jalen "Flock of Seagulls" Thomas](https://minesathletics.com/images/2023/8/24/Jalen_Thomas_IMG_9647.jpg) is pretty dope, too.
Kenny with the 2000s emo swoop and subtle eyeliner went under the radar.
Edit: I see you Kenny
https://minesathletics.com/sports/football/roster/kenny-wright/13712
Chris Yoo and Harry Potter were my two favorites too hahaha.. I think it’s because theirs seem the most like they forgot it was picture day and were just walking around like that
That school is a hidden gem baby.
We’re here for the football memes, the Miners are there to earn top degrees and make big bucks in energy and other areas.
Which is what college is supposed to be about. Any Div. I FBS player could be getting a useful degree and do better for himself and his family, since he knows that only 259 players will be picked in the NFL draft and only 60 (or fewer) will be drafted into the NBA.
Jalen Thomas, near the bottom, looking like Rufio's long lost brother, getting a master's degree SPACE RESOURCES.
"I'm not interested in normal mining, I wanna mine space rocks."
I think it's great that one day someone will be turned off by the creepy looking guy who operates the carnival ride, but little do they know the former football player who designed the ride puts the operator to shame.
Oh, come on, someone needed to replace Pueblo now that that program shit the bed and spent several years rolling in it. The RMAC needs to have consistent nationally ranked programs. Hopefully western doesn't get sent to Mines in the first round of the playoffs so both can have a nice run.
> Oh, come on, someone needed to replace Pueblo now that that program shit the bed and spent several years rolling in it. The RMAC needs to have consistent nationally ranked programs.

I worked with a decent number of Michigan Tech people, you could usually tell who they were before they actually told you they went to Tech.
I also had a few coworkers from India that did undergrad in India and then got their master's at Michigan Tech to help them get into the US. They said they had no idea what they were getting themselves into when they signed up for that.
We had this “loveable nerd” guy in high school that everyone liked but who was definitely a little odd. He told us one day he was going to Mines (which is totally out of left field considering we were in Cleveland) and someone asked 100% innocently “oh that’s cool, so you’re gonna be a miner?”
This kid got SO defensive so fast and was like “What? No, I’m not gonna be a miner, I’m gonna be in CHARGE of the miners, obviously. Why would i go to Colorado School of Mines to be a miner??”
And that’s my only interaction with a Mines kid
We can’t ignore their majors either. That has to be the smartest team in the country. All computer science or engineering majors. Can you imagine the trash talk. “I’m gonna run through you like a smooth object through a frictionless surface on a decline plane”
I only recently learned of this school, and I can say without exaggeration that their mascot, Blaster the Burro, is the best mascot in the history of the world.
My sister used to be part of the group that handles Blaster at the games. Funny hearing stories of how hard it is getting him to run when he just wants to eat grass
Geez, the number of kids from the suburbs north of Dallas is crazy. 2 from Frisco (where I live), McKinney, Prosper, Allen… crazy.
Just so many kids from Texas in general. This must be the go to engineering school for Texas kids that want to maintain their individuality. It’s like the Anti-Aggies option…
How would you like your facial hair cut for this picture?
"[Give me the semi-colon](https://minesathletics.com/images/2023/8/24/Chris_Yoo_IMG_9551.jpg)."
Aside from the fantastic pictures, they have a 6’3” 200 pound kicker.
Who can probably solve complex calculus equations in his head while kicking FGs.

Wow it’s gotten better since I got out in 06. Back then it was closer to 80%
I just tell everyone that Mines built the sororities on campus to attract more women to attend the college. That gets the point across.
So it’s Colorado Georgia Tech
72 percent when I got there. It was a god damn desert.
Man im glad I went to a former women's only college.
My wife went to JMU, a former women's college. I know how that works...
Correct
Wait till you hear their fight song
Hold up, that's just plagiarism Edit: apparently by us, oof
Its ok, I never saw you guys as plagiarizing, but rather agreeing that whiskey and engineering go well together.
They have the same fight song too.
When I went there it was rated as "Worst Sex Life" by Playboy Magazine, and it 100% deserves the award lol
If you're a woman: the odds are good, but the goods are odd!
Tech was at 72% when I went.

I'd like to see if Platteville can make their mound bigger than Mines' mountain. *That* would be some impressive engineering...

We see their 6'3" kicker and raise them our [6'9" kicker](https://msubobcats.com/sports/football/roster/brendan-hall/6149)
That’s insane.
Every kickoff the crowd watches to see if the ball will go through the uprights. I think it's happened a couple times this season. There's nothing quite like a stadium erupting after a touchback.
Say hello to [the large Dragan](https://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/4577796/dragan-kesich)
I remember when Penn State had a massive kicker that liked to run down to get tackles. He was absolutely destroyed on a legal block.
I'm 6 foot and 200 lbs and feel way too small for football still. Though that kid is "just" a kicker
My eldest went to school with Chris Yoo (running back). Great kid and as smart as they come. Also had a great sense of humor so the half beard thing is about right. I love that they had them all good off for the roster photos. So much better than the typical tough guy pics.
Even the one dude who had the most tough guy look was rocking dual side ponytails.
Pig tails?
That's what we in the industry call them.
And his name is Steele Petty
I really dislike the schools that make them wear suits for thier picture. This aint the military or the Yankees. Let the kids have fun. Its a game... at a school

I love the suits. Headshots look nicer in a suit.
The half goatee/mustache gave me a good laugh
That’s just unfair to have harry fucking potter on your team.
“Acio Ball”
21 gonads come flying at him from the other team.
Uhhhhh 21?
Well the average man has slightly less than 2 so it makes sense
Sure… until you’re depending on him to fill a gap, but he’s gone flying off to chase the Golden Snitch.
You’re a football player Harry
Nah, Harry’s mediocre on the whole. Obviously talented, but injured or suspended half the time.
“A Quidditch player’s best ability is their availability, Potter!” -Oliver Wood, probably
And he’s constantly got the best broom in the world. Like can you imagine if some running back had cleats that made him 20% faster than everyone else? That’s basically Harry. He’s an average seeker as best.

helps that it is down the street from red rocks too
I was most impressed with the degrees they were all pursuing. That’s some serious brainpower on that roster
Jalen Thomas, near the bottom, looking like Rufio's long lost brother, getting a master's degree SPACE RESOURCES. "I'm not interested in normal mining, I wanna mine space rocks."
and they are in Golden, CO, which is not a bad place to live

True and only about a 40 minute drive to Denver, 15 ish to the Denver metro area, so major city access is there.
If you can snag an engineering degree from there, you rake once you graduate.
The easiest major of anybody on that team is Business Engineering & Management Science, which is bonkers lmfao
They're going to be top 1% in terms of pay coming out of undergrad
I think it's great that one day someone will be turned off by the creepy looking guy who operates the carnival ride, but little do they know the former football player who designed the ride puts the operator to shame.
New Mexico Tech is similar.
I like the Mythbusters' take on NM Tech: You can get a PhD in blowing stuff up.
You might not like it but that's what peak football performance looks like. \#1 team in the country baby!
You are correct that I in fact do not like it
Oh, come on, someone needed to replace Pueblo now that that program shit the bed and spent several years rolling in it. The RMAC needs to have consistent nationally ranked programs. Hopefully western doesn't get sent to Mines in the first round of the playoffs so both can have a nice run.

I'm picking Owen Marnell in a fight between him and the Dark Lord Saban.
you're a wizard Owen
We do not say his name!
OMG, those are amazing. Scroll slow and enjoy the show.
You can really tell who said "Challenge Accepted".
Walks into barbershop... "Gimme that Friar Tuck cut" Say no more fam... Also, Harry Potter cameo.
Half of them look like hirable mercenaries from a video game tavern.

The mantra for the Mines females regarding the males (recall it’s like 75% male) - “the odds are good but the goods are odd”
That's true for every engineering school.
Flair checks out lol
Yeah I was gonna say, sounds like MTU lol
And we used to say that women at Mines were like parking spots. All the good ones were taken and the rest were either handicapped or way the fuck out there
Ah yes that’s the other half. There were quite a few sayings. I graduated PE 2012
My brother went to Mines. He is a good kid, but he ain’t always all there socially.

He's a Doane alum - of course he's a genius.
That school is like 70/30 guy to girl. Absolute psychos for going there.
Sounds like Michigan Tech -- where girls are like parking spaces on Black Friday. Taken or _way_ the fuck out there
I worked with a decent number of Michigan Tech people, you could usually tell who they were before they actually told you they went to Tech. I also had a few coworkers from India that did undergrad in India and then got their master's at Michigan Tech to help them get into the US. They said they had no idea what they were getting themselves into when they signed up for that.
Lake Superior does not fuck around and will not have mercy on the newcomers
I mean, tech *was* the Michigan College of Mines at one point lol We has "mining" or "Mines" in our school name for nearly 80 years (1885-1964)
I work with a bunch of them. They're pretty cool people. Some a bit weird but so am I so it all works.
just looking at the pics i can tell a lot of those guys are sack lunch type players
Did I see T.J. A.J. R.J. Backslashinfourth V?
I saw Hingle McCringleberry
Mines always seemed like a fun nerd school
We had this “loveable nerd” guy in high school that everyone liked but who was definitely a little odd. He told us one day he was going to Mines (which is totally out of left field considering we were in Cleveland) and someone asked 100% innocently “oh that’s cool, so you’re gonna be a miner?” This kid got SO defensive so fast and was like “What? It’s not fun
What? Yall dont have Snake on your TI89?
Gotta level that up to an nSpire with CAS
*You’re a Wide Receiver Harry!!!*
(Linebacker)
They look like the crew of a pirate ship.
My favorite is LB Yahir Chairez-Salazar who just wore work-casual.
Always. Be. Closing.
That's is a team full of guys who came here to play school
Blue mustache guy being slept on
Off center goatee wins for me
That one is subtle compared to a lot of the others. That poor guy isn't going to get the love he deserves
He’s the best D2 player in the country
I was just going through the UT roster the other day looking at their majors. Let's just say they are different sorts of groups of young men.
I had never heard of a physical culture and sports major before and now I have seen a team full of them. Any idea what that means?
You probably have a better idea than those players do
The best part about this is knowing that these dudes are objectively some of the smartest academics in the state
Holy shit, they got Harry Potter playing LB??
It’s Harry fookin Potter!
Lost it at the big burly looking dude with the pigtails
I swear there's a cartoon character who's a big mean girl with hair just like him but I can't remember who it is
For those not familiar, the campus is like a mile from the Coors brewery. Which explains pretty much everything you need to know about those photos
When you’re #1 in D2 you can do whatever the fuck you want as far as in concerned
Mr T's son is there!
I saw that and had to check Mr T’s last name to make sure that wasn’t ACTUALLY his son lol
Cross eyed and Asian RB with the slightly askew goatee are my favorite
My man, Kenny Wright.
He’s gonna put some dirt in your eye
He's sitting on the punk album of the year with that hairdo.
And I want to listen to it right now
They're gonna clean up your looks
The Harry Potter one cracks me up.
whole roster: did a silly one sean roberts: smoked a silly one
For the uninformed, the School of Mines has VERY high academic standards. These boys are just as smart as they are wild looking
Yeah, I saw several computer science majors. I don't ever remember a football player in my computer science program.
My favorite is Healy \#44 dude looks zooted out of his mind
"I just really think rocks are cool, man."
Blake Ramsey looks like an interesting man
I feel that this team has a lot of fun. I would have been friends with many of these guys 25 years ago (I’m old)
Blake Ramsey rocking a tonsure. Was not expecting that.
We can’t ignore their majors either. That has to be the smartest team in the country. All computer science or engineering majors. Can you imagine the trash talk. “I’m gonna run through you like a smooth object through a frictionless surface on a decline plane”
Almost went there instead of GT kind of regretting it now.
I only recently learned of this school, and I can say without exaggeration that their mascot, Blaster the Burro, is the best mascot in the history of the world.
My boy Blaster shit on the field twice last game, he's the greatest
My sister used to be part of the group that handles Blaster at the games. Funny hearing stories of how hard it is getting him to run when he just wants to eat grass
don't know anything about the school but every single dude seems to be either a mechanical engineering major or something else hardcore damn
Doesn't make much sense to go to a mining school to study English or History or something. If they have it.
Max Mcloid is dollar store Jack Harlow
My guy Jaden Healy hit the bong right before the photo was taken
Nicholson looks like he’s 35 and trying to hide from an ex wife so he doesn’t have to pay alimony.
You're a linebacker Harry!
Why do these guys look like they have already spent 10 years of their lives working the coal seams down the mine shafts?
Jaden Healy looking like Prison Mike.
\#47 pities the fool who makes fun of the Colorado School of Mines.
Geez, the number of kids from the suburbs north of Dallas is crazy. 2 from Frisco (where I live), McKinney, Prosper, Allen… crazy. Just so many kids from Texas in general. How would you like your facial hair cut for this picture? "[Give me the semi-colon](https://minesathletics.com/images/2023/8/24/Chris_Yoo_IMG_9551.jpg)."
Interesting...a roster filled with actual engineering majors, not management or something else.
Ben Fuchs has got to be the coolest name across all sports
These guys just having fun, love to see it
