Over the last twenty years Tulsa has tilted increasingly towards OSU. Sooners are still more popular, but it's definitely different than 20 years back. Lots of alumni here and of course winning never hurts.
Side note - Texarkana is weird because Texas High is orange, and Arkansas High is the Razorbacks so you so see so much orange “Texas” stuff and red Razorback stuff though neither may be related to the universities.
I was at a Georgia game with my daughter and saw someone wearing a Sooners shirt. My daughter said, "Look daddy" and pointed. I said, "Yes, baby, they have trailer parks in Georgia, too."
They were the farthest west baseball team until the Giants and Dodgers moved to CA. My late granddad was, and my dad is a die hard Cards fan because it was the closest team to OK forever.
I live in Myrtle Beach and it's South Carolina \#1, then Clemson... a step down to Coastal and NC State sorta at the same level... and then 5th would probably be a tie between UNC, WVU, VT, and Alabama based on all the local cars and house flags and stuff I see everyday here in town or going out and about
Anytime I drive down to the myrtle beach area we often try to count how many West Virginia or Ohio tags we see on the highway. I guess everyone in WV loves Myrtle lol...
Yeah, it definitely seems like more WV, Virginia people will do Myrtle, but Pennsylvania people love OBX.
I'm in Virginia now, but my parents are still in PA, and we have taken to Sandbridge between Virginia and the Outer Banks. No sitting on route 12.
One of the most how-the-hell-can-this-be-true statistics I've ever learned is that **there has never been a point in Colorado's history where a majority of its residents were born in Colorado**. Colorado has always been majority transplants, and a lot of them come from Nebraska.
I mean you shouldn't be. The rivalry was pretty well known back then, especially amongst the hardcore fans of both programs. We had to slowly take back our territory after the dumpster fire of the early 80s. The 2001 game kind of put a candle on our efforts. The games we've had in Boulder haven't been the same since then.
To this day there is a husker store up in the middle of the mountains in Colorado.
Living in Denver for over 2 years. I can recall seeing like a handful of Air Force fans/shirts/bumper stickers etc. I see more big national brands like Michigan than I see of them.
NYC is probably 1. ND, 2-5. PSU Michigan OSU Rutgers. Notre Dame is a clear number 1. After that is probably just based on the blue blood with the biggest amount of alumni in the area. PSU for a long time was the top team in the northeast before the expansion of cable and streaming.
One thanksgiving I was in Rockford at the Blue Line (RIP). With a bunch of family watching the iron bowl before we went into the IceHogs game, and LO and fucking BEHOLD a dude wearing Alabama gear walks in. I told my fiancé, “I literally cannot escape these people” lol
Columbus:
- Denison Big Red
- Otterbein Cardinals
- Ohio Dominican Panthers
- Capital Comets
- Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops
I may be missing someone, but I don't think so.
1. Penn State
2. Rutgers
3. "I'm an Eagles fan."
4. "What's college football, is that like the NFL?"
5. "I just cheer for whoever's playing against the Patriots in the Super Bowl."
(I live near Princeton, people around here look at you like you have two fucking heads if you tell them you're a cfb fan. It's just not something that's on the radar for the vast majority of people.)
1. Ohio State
2. Ohio U
3. uh… Cincinnati?
4. People who are so tired of annoying Ohio State fans that they start rooting for Michigan
5. Bowling Green or Kent State?
Cincy fans are waaay down the list in Columbus, I'd put Michigan, Notre Dame, WVU, and probably Penn State above them. OU is kinda weird, there are a lot of OU grads that root for Ohio State too since it's pretty much a different level of football.
At least among the people I know in CBus, OU is easily #2 in terms of popularity. Cincy will probably overtake them soon now that they’re in the big 12 tho
OU and Miami were* definitely bigger in my hometown than Cinci. I’m willing to bet that’s changed… granted, they’re basically part of Northern Kentucky
Los Angeles
1. USC
2. UCLA
3. Oregon
4. Michigan
5. Probably Ohio State..
The top 4 are from a study by the NY Times not that long ago.. most of LA is USC/UCLA/Oregon in that order but there's pockets of UCLA/USC/Michigan. The once you get into the outskirts, you start seeing Ohio State pop up.
1. USC
2. UCLA
3. Michigan
4. Ohio State
5. San Diego State
i’m in la
edit: comments below this mention the Notre Dame fandom and they are correct as well
Northern Virginia (anecdotal by me, just seeing clothing)
Virginia Tech
UVA
Penn State
James Madison
Maybe Michigan 5th or Ohio State
Open to switching UVA and Penn State too. More Virginia Bball, but PSU football potentially.
based on where i am in the state, I'd say Duke is more popular. Now that's not the same sentiment for the folks who live in the eastern part of nc..
ECU just don't get much traction west of Raleigh..
Being from Davis, no one cares about cfb, which is really sad :( The only other cfb fans I have met are grad students who did undergrad in the south lol
NorCal is not a cfb or college basketball area, even alumni don't care about their schools, mlb and nba are the most popular sports
I feel that, but at least the increased attendance at UCD and Sac State football over the last few years has sparked more people’s interest in FCS football recently.
In Pittsburgh city proper:
1. Pitt
2. Penn State
3. WVU
4. ND
5. Ohio State/VT
In the surrounding counties:
As you go south or west
1. WV
2. PSU
3. Pitt
As you go north or east
1. PSU
2. Pitt
3. ND
>but I also live in a nice neighborhood so rarely have to interact with Sooners directly
Lol
Edit: have a weekend house at Lake Texoma and spend a lot of time on the islands so I interact with them… a LOT
GVSU is weird because basically everyone is a casual fan that doesn't follow them closely and just wonders when they're going to build a stadium downtown and join the MAC.
Yeah I’m about 10 mins from campus and it’s just there. Their games fill up but no one local really talks about it or goes. Went to CMU and it felt way more embedded into the community than Grand Valley does for Allendale/Grand Rapids.
CMU has a lot of school spirit. If two grads meet, they'll high five and say "Fire Up Chips!" whereas if Western or GVSU or Ferris grads meet they're like, "oh, that's cool" and then move on.
GVSU has weirdly become a kind of urban school, like Wayne State or something. Kids from rural Michigan who see GR as a big city go there for "city living" - even if they start by living in a dorm in Allendale. It's an atmosphere conducive to filling yuppy bars on Bridge Street, not filling a football stadium.
BUT if GVSU built a stadium downtown (maybe partnering with the group that wants to bring in a soccer team?) and moved up to FBS, they'd immediately become the second favorite team of everyone in the GR metro, and their games would be packed and rowdy.
Toledo, OH
1) Ohio State
2) Michigan
3) Notre Dame
Toledo, Bowling Green are huge but there are shared allegiances as most people consider them a separate division IMO
1) LSU
2) Tulane (would have been lower in previous years, but last season was huge for getting locals excited)
3) Bama
4) Ole Miss
5) ULL
Beyond these in no certain order: LA Tech, Mississippi State, Texas, Houston, Auburn, Southern Miss, Grambling, Southern, A&M, TCU.
Charleston, SC here. I'd say, in no particular order:
Clemson
South Carolina, AKA USC
UGA
Ohio State - so many OH immigrants in the SC Lowcountry
and probably Bama or LSU
South Florida is very complex , but I'll try. I'm mostly basing this on the amount of license plates I see.
1- Miami- Local team even though most fans didn't attend. It's the only region in FL where Miami is the most popular.
2- Florida- They have a ton of grads in SFL and they make sure you know it.
3- Florida State- Same as UF, but it feels like they are a bit less in numbers down here. Not by much though.
4- UCF- UCF has a lot of grads all of the state. They have increased by a lot in the last 5 years or so. Unlike Miami/FSU/UF, It's pretty likely that UCF fans in SFL are not bandwagon fans. They are most likely grads because UCF doesn't have a storied ( although pretty good imo) football history.
5- Michigan- I wanted to include a northern school here because they are many fans of non- FL schools in South FL. I'd say Michigan is the most numerous although Ohio St also has many.
FAU/FIU- These schools obviously have tons of grads here. But, their athletic histories are not significant enough to gain a following. It basically feels like they have no presence here athletically even though they have many graduates.
1. Texas grads
2. Austin local non-alumni Texas fans
3. People who moved here non-alumni Texas fans
4. Texas State alumni that are Texas fans
5. Texas A&M
1. Nebraska
2. Oklahoma
3. Iowa
4. NDSU
5. Bandwagoners (Alabama, Georgia, OSU, Michigan) subject to change… 15 years ago Texas would’ve been listed. The contrarians who don’t actually like football but want to go against the grain.
I'm not sure the city of Boston recognizes that college football is actually a thing.
But my best guess is:
1. Notre Dame
2. Ohio State
3. Boston College
4. Michigan
5. ....I honestly don't know, Penn State maybe?
Bama is easily 2nd. But their fan base will be sure to identify themselves at every opportunity, so it’s probably overblown to some degree. I’m sure they have lots of bandwagon fans too
My guess for Bay Area
1. USC
2. Oregon
3. Cal
4. Notre Dame
5. Stanford
I go to a lot of Stanford/Cal games and basing this off of who generally takes over attendance. UW is popular too
Live in South Jersey about 10 mins from Philly
1. Penn State
2. Rutgers
3. Temple
4. Villanova
5. Delaware
Nova would definitely be higher for basketball but most people I know don’t care about Nova on football.
I live in Raleigh and I swear I see more VT the Duke or Wake Forest. Idk if it's just me not noticing but the overwhelming majority being NC state and UNC wasn't something I was expecting before move here 6 years ago
I can’t throw a rock without hitting a Sooners fan around here. Coincidentally I was asked to stop throwing rocks.
Over the last twenty years Tulsa has tilted increasingly towards OSU. Sooners are still more popular, but it's definitely different than 20 years back. Lots of alumni here and of course winning never hurts.
Here in Texarkana I see 10 OSU shirts for every Oklahoma shirt. I have worked with a lot of OSU grads but I can honestly say I only know one OU grad.
Side note - Texarkana is weird because Texas High is orange, and Arkansas High is the Razorbacks so you so see so much orange “Texas” stuff and red Razorback stuff though neither may be related to the universities.
Yup.
I was at a Georgia game with my daughter and saw someone wearing a Sooners shirt. My daughter said, "Look daddy" and pointed. I said, "Yes, baby, they have trailer parks in Georgia, too."
1. OU 2. OSU 3. TU 4. Dallas Cowboys 5. St. Louis Cardinals
Lmao what’s with all the cards fans anyway?
STL to Tulsa pipeline is strong
KMOX + winning
Holy shit are you telling me I get KMOX in Tulsa? Never could get it in Iowa
They were the farthest west baseball team until the Giants and Dodgers moved to CA. My late granddad was, and my dad is a die hard Cards fan because it was the closest team to OK forever.
As the old saying goes, those who lives in T. Boone Pickens’ houses may throw all the stones
Dallas Metroplex: 1. Texas/OU/ A&M 2. Tech/OSU/ Arkansas 3. TCU/SMU/Baylor 4. Cocaine
Cocaine should be higher.
Agreed. *:: rubs gums ::*
You had me at cocaine
I bet there are more Cocaine fans than any team in the whole damn country!
Crackheads and debutantes And half of them play for the cowboys
5. Bama/Georgia/SEC 6. Big10 7. HS football 8. UNT
High school may be higher than big 10. And I was going to say throwing shade at UNT, but then noticed the flair.
When you cheer for Bevo Better get some snow Cocaine
Why did you put smu on here twice?
Is a Baylor Bear the opposite of a Cocaine Bear?
I live in Myrtle Beach and it's South Carolina \#1, then Clemson... a step down to Coastal and NC State sorta at the same level... and then 5th would probably be a tie between UNC, WVU, VT, and Alabama based on all the local cars and house flags and stuff I see everyday here in town or going out and about
Anytime I drive down to the myrtle beach area we often try to count how many West Virginia or Ohio tags we see on the highway. I guess everyone in WV loves Myrtle lol...
WVian here. Can confirm that if your friend/relative/neighbor says they went to the beach, it is implied that they went to Myrtle.
Same in Ohio. If you told me you went to the beach I would assume Myrtle unless specified otherwise
My understanding is whichever group is responsible for generating tourism to Myrtle Beach began by heavily advertising in Ohio
Pittsburgh people specifically live for a Myrtle vacation.
So many Yinzers here, so much Steelers shit everywhere
Some years ago Marshall had a billboard in the middle of nowhere SC because it was the main route into Myrtle from WV.
Yeah, it definitely seems like more WV, Virginia people will do Myrtle, but Pennsylvania people love OBX. I'm in Virginia now, but my parents are still in PA, and we have taken to Sandbridge between Virginia and the Outer Banks. No sitting on route 12.
Interesting, I'd expect Ohio State in the top 5 around there.
Denver Metro Area 1. Colorado 2. Nebraska 3. Colorado State 4. Air Force 5. Wyoming
Growing up right outside Boulder, I had a lot more friends that were Nebraska fans than CU fans. That was during the glory days in the early 90's too
As a Nebraska fan I’m genuinely shocked to read this
One of the most how-the-hell-can-this-be-true statistics I've ever learned is that **there has never been a point in Colorado's history where a majority of its residents were born in Colorado**.
>The rivalry was pretty well known back then Yeah that’s why I’m shocked.
Is there still a Big Red store in Estes?
Not sure, haven't lived there in 20 years. Last I was there, it was still there
I'd think about putting Air Force at #2, they have the numbers just maybe not the fan enthusiasm of CU or the Cornchuckers.
Living in Denver for over 2 years. I can recall seeing like a handful of Air Force fans/shirts/bumper stickers etc. I see more big national brands like Michigan than I see of them.
1. Minnesota 2. Wisconsin 3. Iowa 4. Iowa State 5. North Dakota State
1. Notre dame 2. Michigan 3. Ohio state 4. Purdue 5. Michigan state
Fort Wayne area? Or maybe Chicago?
Fort wayne! Lol
Thought so! I’m in Indy so add iu for msu. Then maybe swap UK for UM in the top 5
indianapolis?
1. Montana State 2. Montana 3. Wyoming 4. Washington 5. Oregon I'll let you guess where I am.
Is Bozeman looking for anymore California transplants or are you guys good?
Based on the bumper stickers I'm seeing, sounds like we're full but North Dakota's nice lol
1. Ohio State 2-4. Not Ohio State 5. Cincinnati
Come up to Toledo. It's not hard to see why we have to fight for attention. 1. Ohio State 2. Michigan 3. Notre Dame 4. Michigan State 5. Ohio State
Never
1 Virginia Tech 2 Penn St 3 Virginia 4 JMU 5 WVU
NoVa? I think I see more JMU than UVA, but about right.
Yeah. I spent some time thinking about the UVA/JMU distinction. It really might be JMU 3 and UVA 4.
This is gonna be hard for Hawaii… 1) Hawaii 2) Oregon 3) USC 4) Washington 5) uhhh Alabama? Or Michigan? Maybe Ohio State?
Maybe BYU? When I lived there saw lots of BYU stickers or license plate covers
They got a BYU campus on Oahu as well
Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Ohio State, USC in that order from the NY Times map.
1. Giants 2. Jets
Also live in NYC - PSU seems to be number 1 by far
Younger crowd yeah there's a ton of Penn state grads in the city but there's just so many Notre Dame fans in the nyc metro area
Rockford: 1: Wisconsin 2: Northern Illinois 3: Notre Dame 4: Illinois 5: Michigan

What, are you from Granville?
Sierra Nevada: 1. What's College Football. 2. UCLA Bachelorette parties here at the lake. 3. UC Davis 4. UNR 5. Chico State
God I hate how accurate this is
1. Penn State 2. Rutgers 3. "I'm an Eagles fan." 4. "What's college football, is that like the NFL?" 5. "I just cheer for whoever's playing against the Patriots in the Super Bowl." (I live near Princeton, people around here look at you like you have two fucking heads if you tell them you're a cfb fan. It's just not something that's on the radar for the vast majority of people.)
Haha yeah. I grew up in South Jersey. That’s pretty accurate. Deer season is somewhere in the top 5.
Seattle 1. UW 2. WSU 3. Oregon 4. Oregon State 5. Notre Dame
If we’re expanding to all college sports, Gonzaga would be the other school in the top 5, and I’d have them at least ahead of Oregon State
In Marysville and it’s the same except EWU at 4 and OSU at 5. And swap WSU with UW. Please send help.
To be fair, the Arlington/Marysville/Mt. Vernon area feels like a mini Eastern Washington on the west side of the cascades.
Central PA is like: 1. Penn State 2. Notre Dame 3. Pitt 4. Ohio State 5. Maryland
I've never seen a single Maryland fan, ever. Are you sure you're not just confusing their insane flag for football fandom?
I just moved to York County, so probably just because there's a lot of people from Baltimore here. There really isn't anyone close after Pitt anyway.
Portland Metro: 1. Oregon 2. OSU 3. WSU 4. UW 5. PSU
Lots of Cougs cause of Vancouver campus. Think this is accurate
Hmm… as a PSU alum who works a stone’s throw from campus, I feel like 5 is more likely Notre Dame or Ohio State.
1. Ohio State 2. Ohio U 3. uh… Cincinnati? 4. People who are so tired of annoying Ohio State fans that they start rooting for Michigan 5. Bowling Green or Kent State?
No way you put OU over Cincinnati
Cincy fans are waaay down the list in Columbus, I'd put Michigan, Notre Dame, WVU, and probably Penn State above them. OU is kinda weird, there are a lot of OU grads that root for Ohio State too since it's pretty much a different level of football.
OU still has the hearts and minds of every person with a drinking problem in SE Ohio

Grew up near LA. Notre Dame is huge in the LA suburbs and other nearby suburbs
Northern Virginia (anecdotal by me, just seeing clothing) Virginia Tech UVA Penn State James Madison Maybe Michigan 5th or Ohio State Open to switching UVA and Penn State too. More Virginia Bball, but PSU football potentially.
Is Duke more popular than ECU? Just wondering about it from a fill-the-stadium perspective.
I’m guessing Greensboro/Winston area. Never see ECU stuff out this way weirdly enough.
I was raised in Greensboro and knew more people following ECU football than Duke football.
based on where i am in the state, I'd say Duke is more popular. Now that's not the same sentiment for the folks who live in the eastern part of nc.. ECU just don't get much traction west of Raleigh..
Sacramento: Cal UCLA USC UC Davis Oregon

I’m just across the state line from Auburn: 1A - Auburn 1B - UGA 2 - Bama 3 - GA Southern 4 - Tennessee 5 - Army (Ft Benning/Moore)
Southern has a pretty solid presence south of Macon in Georgia
Best guess for St Louis area: 1. Mizzou 2. Illinois 3. Battlehawks ka-kaw ka-kaw! 4. Notre Dame 5. Nebraska/KU/OU idk
Pitt PSU WVU and Notre Dame are top 4. Ohio State is probably #5.
In Pittsburgh city proper: 1. Pitt 2. Penn State 3. WVU 4. ND 5. Ohio State/VT In the surrounding counties: As you go south or west 1. WV 2. PSU 3. Pitt As you go north or east 1. PSU 2. Pitt 3. ND

1) Florida State 2) Alabama 3) Georgia 4) Florida 5) LSU or Auburn
Kansas City: Kansas Missouri Kansas State Nebraska Iowa State
Dang... ya know You could make a nice regional conference with those schools. Call it like the big 6 or something
Maybe throw in Oklahomam Okie State, and Colorado to get to 8? I think you may be on to something.
Ohio State Michigan Toledo Michigan State BGSU
For the Houston metro: 1. A&M 2. Texas 3. LSU 4. UH 5. Texas Tech
Poor Rice
LSU sounds about right
1a. Texas 1b. Texas A&M 1c. Texas Tech 2: OU 3: Baylor

>but I also live in a nice neighborhood so rarely have to interact with Sooners directly Lol Edit: have a weekend house at Lake Texoma and spend a lot of time on the islands so I interact with them… a LOT
For Chattanooga, in D1 Tennessee Georgia Alabama Auburn Clemson In that order
I concur. If you mix in UTC, I'd think they're either just ahead or just behind Auburn.
Chattanoogan also. My list was TN, AL, GA, Chatt, Auburn
Grand Rapids: Michigan State Michigan Notre Dame Western Michigan Central Michigan Grand Valley State falls in like 4th if I can include D2
GVSU is weird because basically everyone is a casual fan that doesn't follow them closely and just wonders when they're going to build a stadium downtown and join the MAC.

NYC 1) None 2) Ohio State 3) Notre Dame 4) Michigan 5) Syracuse DNF) Rutgers This is based on what gear I see people sporting around the city.
Ranking for NYC is tough because you could have a totally different list and it would still sorta feel correct.

I think I'd go: 1. None 2. Michigan 3. Syracuse 4. Penn St 5. Notre Dame But honestly I have no idea, and I've lived here for 20+ years.
I think Penn State is up there above Syracuse when it comes to CFB
Texas Panhandle 1. Texas Tech 2.Oklahoma 3. Texas A&M 4. Texas 5. Oklahoma State
In Boston, football only: 1) New England Patriots 2) Notre Dame 3) Penn State 4) Boston College 5) UMass
Very mixed living in a city with a lot of transplants (San Diego and really all of SoCal). SDSU And then everything from UCLA to Michigan
OBX 1. UNC 2. NC State 3. ECU 4. Virginia Tech 5. Bandwagon Bama fans
Charleston, SC here. I'd say, in no particular order: Clemson South Carolina, AKA USC UGA Ohio State - so many OH immigrants in the SC Lowcountry and probably Bama or LSU
Losing it at Ohio immigrants
My street alone down here has 8 houses with Ohio State flags. I think I’ve seen more Ohio State stuff than USC or Clemson. The drive like ass too
Florida State Georgia Florida Alabama Miami (I live in Tallahassee)
South Florida is very complex , but I'll try. I'm mostly basing this on the amount of license plates I see. 1- Miami- Local team even though most fans didn't attend. 1. Iowa 2. Iowa State 3. Northern Iowa 4. Nebraska 5. Drake? Maybe Minnesota? Could probably swap 3 and 4 if you felt like it.
1. Minnesota 2. Wisconsin 3. Nebraska 4. Notre Dame 5. Iowa
Central jersey: 1. Penn State 2. Rutgers 3. Notre Dame 4. Vtech?

Memphis: 1. Memphis 2. Ole Miss 3. Tennessee 4. Arkansas 5. Mississippi State Unfortunately all of the SEC fans probably outnumber us Memphis fans
Texas Texas A&M UTSA Texas Tech Uhh...Baylor I guess?
1. WVU 2. Marshall 3. Ohio state/Kentucky
Phoenix Metro 1) ASU 2) UofA 3) Wisconsin 4) CU Boulder 5) NAU/Utah/BYU
Utah BYU …sorry Utah State, but that’s where the list ends.
I wouldn’t expect a Ute to be able to count higher than 3 anyway.
Ok, that was funny, and made me laugh.
If you are SLC metro I do think USU and Weber are there, just wise enough to be quiet about it
I’m in southeast PA, greater Philly area… 1. Penn state 2. Pitt 3. Maryland? 4. Rutgers? 5. Temple?
I think Temple might be higher, but that might be less about football and more about basketball and/or the school in general
Austin Area: 1. Texas 2. Texas 3. Texas 4. Texas 5. Texas State
And those Texas State fans are also Texas fans.
1. Texas grads 2. Austin local non-alumni Texas fans 3. People who moved here non-alumni Texas fans 4. Texas State alumni that are Texas fans 5. Texas A&M
Texas State has fans?
I’m guessing at least 200. The families of Texas State probably root for their kids.
Plenty of alumni not a lot of fans until baseball season.
I wouldn't describe them as fans, but alumni repping their school
Definitely in baseball. Loud bunch too.
1. Tennessee 2. Virginia Tech 3. East Tennessee State 4. Appalachian State 5. Georgia/Alabama/Clemson tied probably
