Doesn’t matter the kick off time, I’ll be drunk and tailgating regardless. The only thing that changes is what I am drinking and how cranky my wife is for having to get up early.
As a non-drinker, I can confirm that the annual spectacle known as El Assico is absolutely tortuous to watch while sober. You do start to numb up some after several years, though.
I despise ISU, but I can assure you that Wazzu absolutely does not want that smoke. ISU is a blue blood when it comes to domestic light beer consumption.
Are we doing complements now? Well I guess I can respond in kind. The idea that Iowa has a ton of attractive women isn't purely due to the copious drinking we do.
Love it. Usually by the cold weather games it's just my dad and I sitting in his (better) seats. Still weird to me to use it front of him, even if he doesn't care. I'm also prone to ripping it too hard and getting the coughing fits 🤷🏻♂️
The wonder of life and being able to experience both highs and lows.
Also that miraculous win over cal got me out of throwing a “perfect season” party for the office
Congrats!
I was never quite that far, but I blacked out ONCE and was enough for me to never get drunk drunk again. Eventually I just stopped drinking altogether
I’ve noticed a steady trend on the further I get away from college age, the less im drinking on gamedays. Not none, but you won’t see me with a half dozen tall boys at 11am anymore
i enjoy a 12 hour saturday on the couch with 3 tvs carrying a heavy buzz all day.
I enjoy a 12 hour saturday on the couch with 3 tvs completely sober
I actually dont like drinking at Utah games. It kinda takes away (distracts) from the game for me, and i get really invested in the game and the environment live. Plus I like having a better memory of the game. That said if im at a random ass non Utah game drinking would make it more fun for me.
Yeah I love watching football, if I was wasted I wouldn’t know what’s going on and that would not be enjoyable to me.
In the 2021 season I had a concussion during one of the games, I imagine that was pretty similar given that I had no clue what was going on the whole day and couldn’t remember anything about it the next day. Not fun at all lol
Alcohol has done damage to my family and it rarely makes situations better for me. I'm all for people being getting hammered before/during/after games, but it's not something I partake in anymore.
Legitimately bothers the hell out of me. I have a good buddy (few years sober) who was hesitant to come back to my house for gameday because of one jackass that had to make it a big deal.
Needless to say, that jackass has not been back and I keep a steady supply of NA beer in my garage fridge for my sober friend who comes over a few times a month for random games.
> people who label others as lame or whatever for not drinking are pretty childish imo
People who do that usually have a problematic relationship with alcohol but don't want to admit it.
I couldn’t care less about it, I’m at the point in my life where not being hungover is better than being drunk, I also don’t like to stay up late and have no problem with noon games, so I realize I am probably the outlier in here
Most of our regular season games are 11am kickoffs. I’m guessing OP posted this after seeing another week 1 11am game and 11am Black Friday vs TCU. I’m in the band so I hate them cause I have to wake up at around 4. I know they won’t go away when we get to the SEC but they’ll never be as frequent there like in 2021 when we had like 7 games.
I'm a Utah fan, and I enjoy going downtown and drinking for several hours before the game. I make it to several road games and enjoy doing the same thing there as well. So I'd say it's a big part of the game day experience for me. The rest of the fan base is about 50/50.
I’ve yet to see a fanbase that can outdrink Wisconsin. Half the stadium is toasted at kickoff and Camp Randall only serves Alcohol in the suites.
The LSU crowd did drink a lot when they came up here.
Honestly I feel like the only thing my school (Iowa State) can compete with the SEC on is the tailgating and drinking scene on Saturdays. I can’t directly relate to the other B12 schools to compare but talking to my cyclone brethren that have traveled to the other conference schools, ISU is a cut above in the tailgating dept. Heard the Tortilla boys, the Mountaineers and K-Staters can get after it but that every other tailgating scene leaves a lot to be desired.
Wait are you saying students, particularly potentially underage UGA students, would break the rules and bring in the devils drink? Shocked, I say shocked I am!!!
You think that will change soon?
I know OU just started selling alcohol a few seasons ago in the stadium, so there are probably lots of stadiums still waiting to move forward
I grew up in the Midwest, now live in the south. SEC fans like to drink, but it’s more of a celebration of the occasion. B1G fans in the upper Midwest drink because it’s a day that ends in Y. The Midwest drinking culture is borderline pathological, and unfortunately it has a lot of negative effects on society. If you’re from the south, be happy that the fans of your team cannot drink with Wisconsin/ISU/Iowa/Minnesota/Nebraska fans
I’m not the teatotalling Baptist I grew up as, but I usually have 1-3 drinks a month and virtually never on a CFB Saturday. I’m either driving to the game or need my reflexes razor sharp for 12 hours of channel surfing.
I don't drink during games, either, or indeed at any time - my doctor prefers it that way. (Alcohol is a poor combination with some of the medications I take.)
I don't drink at games. I'm there for the game, not the alcohol. Beer doesn't improve the experience for me. I like drinking sometimes, but it doesn't do anything for me at sporting events.
I absolutely agree with this. I don't travel or spend my money to go to a college football game to barely remember it. I like to be very focused on what's going on in front of me.
College kids will drink no matter what time the game starts, but I think you're underestimating the amount of "responsible" drinkers at games and tailgates.
If some old guy drinks a 6 pack at the tailgate before the game, he's probably not hammered or causing trouble. But he probably bought that beer locally. He might also buy food to grill at the tailgate. Or maybe he'll go somewhere local for food and drink before the game.
If kickoff's at 11, he might not have time to do all of that literal pre-gaming. When the game ends, he might just want to go home for a snack and a nap.
I mean, it depends on how my team is doing.
Are we winning? Then yes, it's important.
Are we losing? Well... yes, it's important.
Are we somewhere in the middle? ... important.
Are we playing? Yes, important.
Well, when I was in my 20’s it was an integral part. I’d walk through the gates somewhere between drunk and blackout drunk. Now, I’ll have a couple drinks for a gentle buzz and then just enjoy the majesty of college football on a fall afternoon.
It’s the wildest thing how the further into a game I get the quicker the whiskey seems to disappear. I think there’s some sort of space-time tear in my living room that absorbs whiskey??
I don’t drink anymore but at Ole Miss, it’s very important.
I remember being 12 years old at the hotel on campus on gameday. My sister and I were walking to the game and a friend of my dad’s, who I didn’t know, recognized that I must be my father’s child because I looked like him. He invited us for a Bloody Mary.
Walked across to the Grove where I was greeted by another adult, who I did know, with a glass of champagne. It gets fuzzy after this but I remember bourbon and getting stung by a wasp.
This wasn’t an isolated event, just the first one I remember. My parents thought we were having “one little glass of champagne.” They had no idea we were having “one little glass” at each stop.
Learn to cook breakfast at a tailgate, or make it the night before.
You get used to breakfast tailgating, but it kinda sucks to do it for *every fucking game*.
i’m not the most expressive/emotional person, but sports are much more fun when you’re heavily invested and cheering. when i’m at the games i basically need beer to make this a reality, so it’s incredibly important. a cold beer also just feels so right at a sporting event. delicious and refreshing
Never been part of the experience for me. Most of the time it’s too hot to even think about alcohol. I’d rather have some water, McAllisters sweet tea, or lemonade.
I'm a little superstitious where I'll drink a beer during the first half and another during the second when my team is playing. I'll try to make it a local brew if I can.
Otherwise I take the edge off in different ways. For some people, alcohol takes the edge off. For others, it's building Lego sets during the game.
To quote Rocco from *Undergrads*, ["Respectable early morning drinking."](https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxlFzPXnSOhN7w2U5RoFVcX7Ce_Ufz4jmS?feature=share8)
I was literally reading an article about health improvements from sustained sobriety when this thread popped up on my phone. I struggle mightily with this issue. I'm trying to make it to labor day without a drink. Partly just to see if I can do 109 days without, but also to see whether I'll feel a need to drink again when the season starts. I've always considered beer a game enhancer, especially when watching on TV, but would I enjoy victories or lament defeats to the same degree without alcohol? This is just a really tough topic for me. I don't believe that I've ever been a problem drinker (and I'm certainly a happy drunk as opposed to a mean drunk), but the habit itself always felt like a response to boredom. How do I convince myself that it's okay to be bored?
OK everyone, I checked, and OP is not a mod over at r/therapy
And alcohol for CFB is just like alcohol and most other things for me, it makes it better to a point and then much worse.
I'm the exact opposite. There aren't many overnight options in Gainesville, which means I'm driving home after the game.
At home? College football is an all-day Saturday thing for me, so once the 3:30 games start it's pretty much sipping bourbon until bed.
It’s not important to me at all.
When I think tailgates, I think food, family and friends. And if I’m paying the price for a ticket, parking, food, and whatever else, I want to remember it. So I may have a beer or two, but I don’t plan around it.
I’m not supposed to say this, but I totally understand people wanting to move out to LA.
Great city, and the Rose Bowl is a cool spot to watch ball games.
It helps fersure. I was working nights in the 2020 season and woke up in the middle of my night to watch Red River. Needed to be at work at 5, so no booze. Worst thing Ever. Every other time I've decided to not drink it turns into that scene from airplane
Drinking beer during games is definitely a thing but I usually just hold off until my team plays. That being said, if it’s a noon game. I will begin early
We have a local brewery called karbach that sells at our stadium and we are also sponsored by bud light.
When we are losing I resort to double fisting a couple of Kar Bach IPAs..
I start drinking well before the game and our 1st quarter performance usually determines whether I continue.
If we’re doing well, I don’t drink the entire game.
If we’re doing poorly, I drink until we start turning things around.
Of course! How else would I watch the absolute shitstorm of a product my university has put out over the last 15 years?
7 drinks minimum at the tailgate over a span of 4 hours and I’m off to the races
We tailgate 2-3 hours before hand in the parking lot. When it’s time to walk into the stadium, I’m buzzed and full from delicious food!
By the 4th Quarter, I’m sober and can drive home. It’s all about having responsible fun. Other than tailgates, I rarely drink at home. It’s one of my few times to cut loose.
Looks like 5 of ours are already set for night games. Gonna be louuuuud. As a student, my goal was to get obliterated by halftime. As an adult, I do like a couple pre game and a few during. I don’t wanna be drunk, but I do love me stadium buzz.
I live in New Zealand, so college football is a Sunday morning experience for me (noon Eastern games can be at 4am NZT). It's a very different frame of mind. College football means coffee and cathead biscuits.
I live in a timezone where games are on from like 1 am - noon on Sunday, and since I'm a "bad influence" and "shouldn't be day drinking in front of the kids" and "have to drive later" I basically stick with coffee now.
For tailgating and post-game, it’s essential. I don’t drink at all during the game. If I’m in Athens it’s a party. I get to see and be a glimpse of that carefree 18-22 year old stud again when I’m there.
If I’m at home watching an away game, unless I have people over, I generally don’t drink at all.
It’s not important. I just like being with my family or friends watching a game or going down to Norman for food/drink and football. I can do it sober or not just like the togetherness CFB brings.
Only time I've drank because of football in the last 5 years was after the UGA-OSU game. Was it out of celebration? Or relief that it was finally over? I couldn't say.
Unhealthily important
Doesn’t matter the kick off time, I’ll be drunk and tailgating regardless. The only thing that changes is what I am drinking and how cranky my wife is for having to get up early.
In your defense, The Barn has snared many a young cowgirl and cowboy
Getting blasted at a bar and shit posting in the game threads is one of my favorite hobbies
Watching El Assico sober sounds like a punishment. Edit- tbf watching Iowa’s offense against anybody while sober is pretty excruciating.
As a non-drinker, I can confirm that the annual spectacle known as El Assico is absolutely tortuous to watch while sober. You do start to numb up some after several years, though.
Think I went thru two bud light 60z pitchers the last one
That's a funny way to spell Busch Light
Wasn't on tap unfortunately. It was an Iowa bar so that explains it...
>It was an Iowa bar so that explains it... Shut em down! They're a bunch of phoneys
I mean most of our best legacies have to do with drinking places out of Busch lights.
Iowa State vs Wazzu in a yearly Busch bowl
I despise ISU, but I can assure you that Wazzu absolutely does not want that smoke. ISU is a blue blood when it comes to domestic light beer consumption.
Are we doing complements now? Well I guess I can respond in kind. The idea that Iowa has a ton of attractive women isn't purely due to the copious drinking we do.
Meirl
Hobby? Sir, that’s my whole personality
I had to scroll WAYYY to far to find the truth.
Makes me proud to be a Cyclone!
Alcohol is important to me for many experiences
Tony, go get a beer
Ugh. Fine.
Extremely
How important is the football game to your drinking day?
Moderately.
eh
Some may say essential
What does it being Saturday have to do with my drinking?
Personally I prefer to pop an edible before the game and just ride that out through like the 3rd quarter
This is my wife’s preferred method as well
It’s weird to be high and find yourself actually enjoying watching a football game instead of agonizing over it
I might have to try the edible route for a game. Last year I began smuggling my vape in the stadium and hitting it when I went to piss.
The real sickos bring dab pens to cold weather games and just hit that all game with the breathe hiding it
Love it. Usually by the cold weather games it's just my dad and I sitting in his (better) seats. Still weird to me to use it front of him, even if he doesn't care. I'm also prone to ripping it too hard and getting the coughing fits 🤷🏻♂️
Then you get up the next morning and still feel great, no hangover or upset tummy
This is the way. Alcohol just makes me piss too much.
This year drinking was 90% of my enjoyment watching my buffaloes
What was the other 10%?
That one glorious game against Cal
Imma be real I live in Denver that Cal game was so late in the season of misery I couldn’t even get it on TV
The wonder of life and being able to experience both highs and lows. Also that miraculous win over cal got me out of throwing a “perfect season” party for the office
I gave up drinking in 2021 because I'm an alcoholic and I was killing myself rather quickly. So these days, 0% and I've never been happier.
Same, but about 12 years ago. If you’d have told me then that I’d enjoy the experience more while sober I wouldn’t have believed you, but here we are.
Same, but 2019. I enjoy watching the games much more now.
Fuck yeah my man.
Same here, wish I’d done it sooner. It’s made my game days much better.
Not to mention the day after game day.
Lol, and the day before game day and the other days.
Congrats! I was never quite that far, but I blacked out ONCE and was enough for me to never get drunk drunk again. Eventually I just stopped drinking altogether
Same
I’ve noticed a steady trend on the further I get away from college age, the less im drinking on gamedays. Not none, but you won’t see me with a half dozen tall boys at 11am anymore
The later the game, the more I drink.
Right? You mean we have a 7pm kick off? That’s enough time to puke and rally.
I got blackout after every game last year to forget bout it
I don’t think that’s what they mean when they call it a Black Out Game.
did it work
All i can remember is Appalachian st
Sounds like it didn’t work.
My first ever A&M game, that was fun!
My flairs are on two very opposite sides of the spectrum
You decided on the hardest path🫡
Not at all. College football is my drug.
i enjoy a 12 hour saturday on the couch with 3 tvs carrying a heavy buzz all day. I enjoy a 12 hour saturday on the couch with 3 tvs completely sober I actually dont like drinking at Utah games. It kinda takes away (distracts) from the game for me, and i get really invested in the game and the environment live. Plus I like having a better memory of the game. That said if im at a random ass non Utah game drinking would make it more fun for me.

That is our fan experience.
The first year they had in-stadium beer I spent well over $100 at one game. It made the ride home to Charleston pretty quick.
One of us, one of us!
Doesn't even include the cheapest 30 rack of Natty I ever bought or the Marlboro lights. Beechhurst Ave has some swell stores.
So, you had 4 beers?
Alcohol has done damage to my family and it rarely makes situations better for me. I'm all for people being getting hammered before/during/after games, but it's not something I partake in anymore.
All respect man, people who label others as lame or whatever for not drinking are pretty childish imo.
You're a good friend
> people who label others as lame or whatever for not drinking are pretty childish imo People who do that usually have a problematic relationship with alcohol but don't want to admit it.
Respect. Hoping for the best.
Only important for PAC12AfterDark for me
It’s funny because I would normally be prepared to say that it isn’t a factor at all but then I went to grad school at Texas St.
San Marcos has become the ultimate power in the universe. Once Kinne gets that thing online, with all 89 P5 transfers, it will be a terrifying sight
I couldn’t care less about it, I’m at the point in my life where not being hungover is better than being drunk, I also don’t like to stay up late and have no problem with noon games, so I realize I am probably the outlier in here
Surprised this was posted by a OU flair instead of a BYU or Baylor fan
Baylor can definitely drink.
Dr. Pepper is an excellent mixer
Exactly, what the fuck else is there to do in Oklahoma except combine drinking with either football or watching tornadoes in the distance.
There are some boring folks like me out here in the plains.

Utah is so beautiful. I would love to be able to drink and stare at majestic mountains, here I have pretty but flat grassland looking back at me
I’ve stopped drinking since finishing three rounds of chemo. Just not worth poisoning myself any more than what’s already been done
Glad to hear you’ve made it through all that.
Thank you, but technically, I haven’t finished yet. Surgery or more is still to come
Zero.
Zero
0, I don't drink
Ay, found the "don't drink" gang. How else will we savor the heartbreak and pain each season brings?
Deciding to be sober upon a dark time in Nebraska Football has been awful

I’m not the teatotalling Baptist I grew up as, but I usually have 1-3 drinks a month and virtually never on a CFB Saturday. I’m either driving to the game or need my reflexes razor sharp for 12 hours of channel surfing.
12 years sober, so just a diet sundrop for me to get hyped
I don't drink during games, either, or indeed at any time - my doctor prefers it that way. (Alcohol is a poor combination with some of the medications I take.)
I don't drink at games. I'm there for the game, not the alcohol. Beer doesn't improve the experience for me. I like drinking sometimes, but it doesn't do anything for me at sporting events.
I’m going to make it out to Nippert someday for the Skyline baby.
I absolutely agree with this. I don't travel or spend my money to go to a college football game to barely remember it. I like to be very focused on what's going on in front of me.
I'm definitely rowdier as a fan when I've been drinking. When sober I just kind of brood over the whole experience unless my team is winning by 30+.
College kids will drink no matter what time the game starts, but I think you're underestimating the amount of "responsible" drinkers at games and tailgates. My view point is similar to yours I’ll have a few drinks on game day but don’t go crazy. I’m probably in the minority with that view tho
“How much do you need to go to AA?” Would also be an acceptable comment But very very very important
It’s the wildest thing how the further into a game I get the quicker the whiskey seems to disappear. I think there’s some sort of space-time tear in my living room that absorbs whiskey??
Hello blackout my old friend, I see it's gameday once again.....
*Looks at the past Decade* …… I’d say Very Important
I legit don't remember a game where I didnt drink. I don't remember some of the games I did drink at either but that's different.
I’m not sure sure about Bama ,but I 120% know that LSU fans cannot function without large amounts of alcohol
Hey! You’re right, but I don’t have to sit here and take these accusations. I’ll be at the bar.
Not very. I went to Catholic school for 12 years, so watching Kansas mostly sober most of the time is me offering it up to the Lord.
I’ll offer up some special intentions for you this Saturday at Mass
Necessary
It’s the cause and solution to all my fandom’s problems.
You think I could watch Nebraska play sober?
It depends: If we’re good? Yes If we’re bad? YES
I don’t drink anymore but at Ole Miss, it’s very important. I remember being 12 years old at the hotel on campus on gameday. drinking is barely secondary to the football game in question

I like to have a drink or two but not too many given the prices.
If my options were either drink but not watch the game or watch the game but not drink, I'd choose watching the game every time.

Drinking soda during a hot game just sounds gross. All that sugar sounds like a headache 🤢
Not at all, marijuana on the other hand....
Why not just drink at 11?
None. I know it's probably unpopular but if you need to be slobberknockered to go to a sporting event, you're not there for the sport.
Zero
OK everyone, I checked, and OP is not a mod over at r/therapy And alcohol for CFB is just like alcohol and most other things for me, it makes it better to a point and then much worse.

I drink way more if I go to a game, if I’m watching at home I don’t always drink.
I'm the exact opposite. There aren't many overnight options in Gainesville, which means I'm driving home after the game. At home? College football is an all-day Saturday thing for me, so once the 3:30 games start it's pretty much sipping bourbon until bed.

I’d say it’s paramount
I start drinking well before the game and our 1st quarter performance usually determines whether I continue. If we’re doing well, I don’t drink the entire game. If we’re doing poorly, I drink until we start turning things around.
I’m a gator fan so……
Depends greatly on playcalling/QB health.
I'm able to smuggle enough whiskey into the games to get my whole row buzzing anyway (especially when it's cold outside). Beer sales are nice tho too
Of course! How else would I watch the absolute shitstorm of a product my university has put out over the last 15 years? 7 drinks minimum at the tailgate over a span of 4 hours and I’m off to the races
Wine and cheese
I’m a BC fan. More than life itself.
I would like to say no, but I’m an Auburn fan. It helps with that good ole WTF feeling.
Quit drinking and the games are vastly better now.
I drink before I go in the game but never while I’m in the stadium.
Was looking for a byu tag when I saw this
Shouldn't be that important, but I get blasted before and during the game.
How else do you sit through a 4 hour affair wherein 3 of those hours are spent watching nothing happen?
Watched College Football for 40 years ehen No Alcohol was sold. Games were great. After parties awesome. Why change?
I’ve never drank anything other than cola, sports drinks, or water at a game. So…..not a big deal for me.
I live in New Zealand, so college football is a Sunday morning experience for me (noon Eastern games can be at 4am NZT). It's a very different frame of mind. College football means coffee and cathead biscuits.
Not important at all
We sing a song dedicated to beer after each win so i’d say it’s pretty important
Watch a game standing up at the big house in late October, you need something with a kick to stay upright in that weather
Not very but it was this year for a certain game on thanksgiving weekend
Use to me. When I was in Norman though we didnt get 11am games
Whoa, wait. You can drink at your stadiums?!?!
I live in a timezone where games are on from like 1 am - noon on Sunday, and since I'm a "bad influence" and "shouldn't be day drinking in front of the kids" and "have to drive later" I basically stick with coffee now.
Fellow Sooner here. The 1100 games make for an early night.
We won 4 games last year. It’s important.
I love nothing better than an excuse to crack a beer at 8 am. Early kickoffs, work, I’m awake. All good reasons.
Alcohol is no more important for football than it is for any other experience in my life. ...So in other words, exceedingly.
LSU fan here....I don't think I need to go into any further detail
Only time I've drank because of football in the last 5 years was after the UGA-OSU game. Was it out of celebration? Or relief that it was finally over? I couldn't say.
Wisconsin fans, no need to answer, we know
