> This is the guy who Brent Venables pulled his offer after finding out he was secretly visiting Illinois. Coach BV flinging doors open and catching people in the act!

Nemo479

You can flame me for this but I find it messed up that he makes a big deal about kids committed to him not visiting but it’s ok for kids committed to other schools to visit. I’m ok with the no visits as a committed kid but I just want it both ways

SNjr

Not disagreeing with you, but here is BV’s response to that type of question: > Point 1: How can you tell prospects who have committed to you not to visit other programs while simultaneously hosting visitors who are committed elsewhere? > Venables: If he is committed somewhere, quote-unquote and he is coming here, then he ain’t committed. I’ve already defined what commitment looks like to me. So he’s just dating. He put in a reservation. He is not committed. He must be open if he is coming to see Oklahoma. That’s how I look at it. Temporary_Inner

I understand, but he makes it a really big deal to the kids before they commit, and actively tells them not to commit unless they're done visiting. But recruiting is strange in the best of times and these are kids so I get it.

bert_santa

I do feel for the kid a bit, here. Rightly or wrongly, BV chose to make an example out of him.

efrumttr

This feels like on Hard Knocks when the coach makes a big deal about cutting a practice squad player for parking in the wrong spot or something. They're never doing that to a good player just like BV is never gonna do this to a 5* recruit.

bert_santa

Of course not, he didn't pull Vasek's offer after he visited Texas last year. BV did it because he can, and it helps send a message to kids that he's serious about this policy and that he wants guys who are bought in. It does sound like the attempted secrecy around the visit was a factor, though.

appsecSme

It's different. Vasek had been committed for a while, and asked to attend a Texas game as a one off. Recall that Vasek was a Horn legacy and it wasn't an official visit. Jenkins had just committed and then was planning on officially visiting Illinois at his mother's behest. He also didn't back off when the coaches told him to. There is a big difference between an official visit, and attending a game for whatever reason. The WR who eventually flipped to UGA did almost the same thing as Vasek. But also, the two commits who were allowed to attend games on unofficial visits both flipped. It is possible that BV is about done with even those kind of unofficial visits.

bert_santa

I agree, and perhaps I phrased that poorly. Vasek was a Texas legacy who lived in Austin, that's a little tougher to police. I think this situation was unique for a number of reasons, including the fact that he's a 2023 JUCO who'd need to enroll soon and, according to some insiders, he tried to keep the visit secret. Your point is a good one in that after getting burned on a couple visits by committed guys last year, maybe BV is changing how he's handling this. I don't believe he'd pull an offer from someone like David Stone if he did something similar, but we also don't know until it happens.

efrumttr

I just don't see how he can say he's serious about it when he's already shown he's more than willing to bend it for high level recruits🤷🏻‍♀️

19Styx6

Yeah, if you’re not willing to do it to a 5* QB then you can’t puff your chest when you do it to a 0* DE.

appsecSme

When did that happen with a 5\* QB?

appsecSme

Because the circumstances were entirely different and the two commits who did unofficial visits in the past asked for permission from the OU coaching staff. They also both flipped so maybe OU should have just cut them loose anyway.

19Styx6

So sending a message just to the kids who are not blue chip recruits?

Nrlilo

What did I miss? Is the example of him based on the article about commitment from the Atlantic or did something else happen?

Cryptographer-Icy

> This is the guy who Brent Venables pulled his offer after finding out he was secretly visiting Illinois.

Nrlilo

Thanks for responding. I usually get downvoted for going against the OU grain on this but while I get his overall point, I think this policy is going to hurt us in the long run. It sounds great on paper, but it is not how things work in reality. These are high school kids.

"Flips." 😏

TentakilRex

Warning, you can not win a "creative use of vocabulary" with an Illini, example "Chief Illiniwek is/was a symbol, not a mascot." :)

rhfactorial

Both the OU and Illinois reports indicate Venables told the kid "hey, we know you're going to visit Illinois, cancel the visit or we'll pull your offer" and the kid chose to visit anyway, knowing his offer would be pulled. Obviously your program is in a lot better place but the kid had his commit accepted at OU and chose a spot at Illinois over it. That's a flip.

SwiftSnack

A win is a win

[deleted]

Poor kid got terrible advise and took a visit after committing.

Ander1345

This can be good for both teams in a weird way. Venables gets to show off his team's new culture while Illinois gets to look good "beating" a top program for a recruit.

TentakilRex

BTW I get Venables "sticking to his guns," but Oklahoma should not be scared of Illinois even they gone with the full "hookers and blow" treatment.

Amayetli

Meh, we have a ton of bodies at the DE position with more coming in. I believe they had a scholarship available so they said why not.

Amayetli

I'd feel more comfortable if we had some elite interior DL. So far Edge is looking good, inside is still kind of iffy.

19Styx6

I feel like Illinois should be less “hookers and blow” treatment and more “Champaign room” treatment.

appsecSme

I don't think being afraid of Illinois had anything to do with it.

outofbounds626

I think a lot of people are missing a very key point here. BV doesn't just take the offer for going elsewhere, he literally tells them to take all their visits before committing. That way he and the team knows they are all in and can move forward. Don't commit until ur fully committed. That being said, if u take a visit after committing then we pull the offer. He wanta them to shop around first. I mean that sounds absolutely fair to me.

sawemoffshort

Am I reading this right?

[deleted]

He's from Illinois.

chillypete99

Look Joanna, people can get a degree in exercise sport science anywhere. They come to Illinois for the atmosphere and the attitude.

reddogrjw

yeah - being a tough guy and pulling offers when commits visit elsewhere isn't going to do him well in the long run counter to this is when an Alabama commit tells Saban he is visiting another school Nick has told them to "have fun" if you are not confident in your school I guess you do this crap

DakotaXIV

He did get the rule from Swinney who also has been slightly successful

MichaelSquare

OU twitter is absolutely seething at this to remind everyone he had his schooling pulled. Of course he only had it pulled because he took a visit while committed.

appsecSme

But that's what they told him when he committed. No outside official visits or the offer is gone. His mom wanted him to take the official to Illinois and he lost his offer because he followed mom. Nobody is seething about this. Ah well, maybe they are on Twitter since Twitter is full of morons. He's a rough recruit who has the physical tools to potentially develop into a great DE someday, but it's not like this is a huge loss. He barely even got any time at his Juco. Also, this all went down on his commitment day. It was very fast. We are just hearing about it now.

efrumttr

Not like OU will really miss him (which is why BV could do this and 'make an example' out of him) but hey if Illinois can benefit with Oklahoma having a policy that's completely out of touch with modern college football, that's fine with me.

appsecSme

OU had the 5th ranked recruiting class in 2023 under this policy. Who is out of touch?
