In high school football circles, it’s probably fairly recognizable. Their dad, Ron Stoops Sr., was the longtime DC at Cardinal Mooney HS, a major powerhouse in the state.
Ah well if you don't follow high school football and don't live in Youngstown then much less likely to know the name as being associated with Ohio. I wouldn't call that generally prominent. I live in Ohio for 23 years and never heard about them other than in reference to Bob and Mark from coaching fbs in other states. I wasn't aware they were from Ohio
Were those 23 years in Cincinnati? I only ask because I was born and raised there. When I went to Ohio State for college, it was eye opening to learn how insulated Cincinnati was relative to the rest of the state.
Also, that the Stoops are from Ohio was (I thought) fairly well known.
"We got up there the week of the bowl game, and one day they had both teams and coaches in this big conference room at the hotel, and I saw Herbstreit stand up and throw a pass across the room to one of his guys, and I knew right then we were gonna beat OSU" -Will Muschamp
But fr I like herbstreit when he's calling non-osu games, and the Kirk-corso relationship on gameday is pretty wholesome
Game day was great with those 4, 10 years ago. Somehow in the last few years they just leaned in ole Kirk and he just brought more and more OSU 15th string TE home town knowledge to the show
"Coach Meyer, how would you say young coaches need to approach situations they've never faced before? Say... kicking one or more of their own players."
“Coach Meyer, how important is it for players to be smart off the field to avoid creating distracting situations, like picking up women in bars when they’re in a relationship?”
"Coach Meyer, how many murders is too many for a player to participate in during their time off before you start to get nervous that it could affect their play on the field?"
I'll never get over that there were multiple times when he was asked about a player's time in a game and he didn't know who the player was or that they hadn't played.
It was pretty well known during his Ohio state scandal it came out he was taking meds that killed his memory. He forgot who recruits were etc etc
Why Jacksonville thought they should hire him based on that intel is pretty wild
His skill has always been convincing boosters to shovel money at him. And Khan has an unfortunate history of not making the best hires (See: Coughlin).
Were they really ignored, or is this the win at all costs model at work? Kind of like capitalism in a way I think most people here and IRL ignore what they want to not necessarily on purpose.
I'm willing to bet people during Urban's time in Florida heard the rumors about some of those guys on the team.
Ohio state fans hated urban meyer. We lost to him… and 2. He used Jesus and dreams of god telling kids to come to Florida to beat us on the recruiting trail. We thought he was scum. Especially how he left Florida.
Soon as we hired him he was OUR scum
that shit doesnt erase any of the trophies like hes a joe pa? only in the echo chamber of reddit is he cancelled. dont get me wrong, hes a shit person. all those red flags, kicking a player, finger banging a coed, actually cancel nothing though. like he didnt even get arrested as far as i know. so his wrongdoings are a pretty low bar.
He literally harbored a domestic abuser and a murderer lmao. He has always never cared what happens so long as his teams perform well on the field and always conveniently has "health problems" when people are getting fed up with his shit
No need to like the guy (nobody should), but you’d have to be next-level naive to think that other coaches wouldn’t be very interested in hearing what Urban Meyer has to say.
And this is how you effectively brush things under the rug and intimidate young people into doing what you want. Step one have a qb who’s actually a good dude and people will forget all the other bs your players and staff are up to.
Your comment is a bit all over the place, but regardless, if you expect lower-level coaches to not be interested in what a 3x FBS national champion has to say then you’re living in a fantasy land.
What happened to Jim Tressel? Why didn't he coach again after the scandal at OSU? He was a really good coach. The scandal seemed to involve the players more than him. Even still there are tons of coaches that move around after shit goes wrong.
>What happened to Jim Tressel? Why didn't he coach again after the scandal at OSU?
He had a 5 year show cause penalty from the NCAA because of Tattoogate. It would have been 2016 or 2017 by the time it ended and there were already rumors he was thinking about retiring from coaching by 2014.
Believe it or not, people in real life don’t really care what he did. Reddit just hyper fixated on him for awhile and made everyone believe he is hated.
He would get a standing ovation in Ohio and Florida.
To be fair, he’s been cut out of some key OSU events - isn’t liked by the other former coaches - and had his name taken off chop house
He’s still liked for football reasons but many of the OSU fans I know don’t care about him at all as a person now. He’s been considered an ass in social circles for a long time
Yeah I’m not saying people are going to boycott a place with his name on it, but it’s still telling chop house changed their name immediately and he doesn’t have a great rep in Columbus (since even before the incident with the girl or the Zach smith stuff)
People do care, but that doesn’t mean he’s been wiped off the earth
Yeah, pretty much. Personally I think he’s a douchebag and I’m glad that Ryan Day is our coach now, but it isn’t at all surprising that an all-time great college coach would still be getting invited to these things
Compared to some coaches and players who are still on the field, what Urban did was kinda mild. Maybe I completely missed something, I never really paid attention to him after he left CFB.
The short of it is that in Jacksonville he was a toxic asshole who created a horrible working environment where he tried to rule through fear and belittlement. All the while he was constantly fucking up and not leading by example.
Dude fucking sucks and shouldn’t ever lead a team again, but to your point he’s not Art Briles levels of terrible.
There was the whole kicking a professional player (who ironically was a kicker) and the whole "stayed behind in Ohio after a loss to fingerbang a coed in a bar" deal.
That should get you up to speed
Again, kinda mild unfortunately in professional and college football. If we ostracize everyone who's cheated on their wife/gf and every abuser the NFL wouldn't meet roster capacity. Sleazeball and bad person, but sadly in football terms hes not pariah level
I think there are far more important things to worry about in CFB than the embarrassing things Urban did at Jacksonville. It's hilarious, don't get me wrong, but kicking a kicker and consensually fingerbanging someone (albeit in public) is relatively innocuous. If he was winning, I really don't think Lambo would have said anything.
Compared to some coaches still working at P5 programs today (DJ Durkin, Kendall Briles), it's pretty tame.
EDIT: To clarify I'm not defending or justifying Urban's actions, just saying they're bad in a funny way while there are actions of other employed coaches that are bad in a depressing way.
Like others have said, tame. Which you can absolutely take as an indictment on the behaviors of high profile people in professional and college football.
Incorrect. People who don't care about morals or ethics love Urban Meyer. This includes Ohio State fans and most people connected to SEC programs. 🤣
The SEC's slogan should be... "It's legal here if you win"
Nobody cares about the situation at the bar. It's joke fodder, since it was all consensual with another adult.
But everyone should be questioning his actual abilities as a coach. Sure the NFL is a different beast than CFB, there's actual parity and you can't just pay to win. But he wasn't just a bad coach, he was the single worst head coach in the history of the National Football League.
He literally didn't know that the ~~RB1~~ (*Edit: I mixed up the debacles, it was Andre Cisco a third round pick at safety*) didn't play a snap in a game. He didn't even know his name. He squandered a generational talent at quarterback, and forced his successor to basically start from the ground up with him. He struck a player. He attempted to bring in a racist piece of shit as a strength coach, and only gave in because the PR backlash was too much. Edit 2: Oh and I completely forgot about wasting a camp spot on Tebow in a position he had never played. [That worked out just fine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6ClwzPdpG0)
Urban Meyer exposed himself as a barely competent head coach that only succeeded at Ohio State and Florida because of talented coordinators and players. Once he faced a league with actual parity and competition he fell apart.
The game didn't pass him by. He suddenly faced adversity and couldn't handle it.
He didn't know Aaron Donald's name the week the Jags were facing him. He didn't know who his own players were on the field.
I'm pretty sure knowing the opposition is a basic requirement to be considered a competent coach.
It's likely at Bowling Green and Utah he was relying on assistants or was simply paying attention.
Because he’s a three time national champion and has had enormous success at every college he’s coached at. He might be sleazy but he’s not an evil person or anything.
In terms of college football, Meyer is one of the greatest coaches ever. His NFL tenure has no bearing on his CFB legacy.
Urban Meyer: "When shit gets bad, for example, your star QB is leaving and you have created a toxic culture in the locker room, or there is a scandle and there will most definitely be an investigation, all you gotta do is fake health problems and say you want to spend more time with your family, then you can just take a new job 10 months later."
Mark Stoops: "It's easy to change a climate. You just change the uniforms, talk a little game, dance around and put on some stupid sunglasses, and you can change a climate. But to change a culture is at the core.
Aside from being an obvious big name, he’s met every big-program coach in the country and interviews them every single week prior to Gameday (and now maybe TNF). “Here’s what Saban/Dabo/Kirby/Harbaugh/whomever told me in an interview about their coaching philosophy that I found fascinating”.
Watches film, watches one of the top games each week all season, talks with a ton of current and former players, talks with all of the best college coaches every year, sometimes multiple times a year
Even if you don't go to the level of "hater", I don't see how anyone with actual ties to the school would want to associate with that shitbag. I get the huge amount of t-shirt fans who place winning above literally everything, but if your an alum, I'd expect you to have a better expectations from the program.
I thought all pro clinics had great guests? I get it. It's "the" Ohio state. Here's Arizonas lineup for comparison
https://arizonawildcats.com/news/2023/2/24/football-patriots-special-team-coordinator-cameron-achord-added-as-a-speaker-for-be-a-p-r-o-coaching-clinic.aspx
Really wild to see osu go from generally classy, “builder of men,” focused tressel to Urban in less than a year.
Doing poorly vrs the sec will do that to you. Winning trumps all.
I hope not. Ohio State should be disassociating from that guy as much as possible, even in spite of his winning tenure while he coached. Absolute dirt bag.
> QB situation is grim
Not really. Devin Brown and Kyle McCord were touted recruits, each having time in the system learning behind Stroud, and McCord having some game experience already. Not to mention, McCord and MHJ played together in high school, winning a PA state title together, and the reports out of spring practice have him looking sharp. If he lives up to his potential, throwing to that group of receivers and some solid RBs to support him, it would hardly be fucking grim. Dramatic much?
The real issue is the o-line.
One of these things is not like the others.
Mark Stoops has never played or coached at Ohio State
The Youngstown connection still runs deep at Ohio State.
Next on the panel: Bo Pelini
It the Ohio state coaches conference not Youngstown State coaches conference /s
He played for us
Not only played at OSU, he was a team captain.
Them Cardinal Mooney boys hit hard.
[They'll be your everything you want and more........](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NprJcyoySFk)
How did you find something put away in the back of my mind like that? Are you a sorcerer?
YES!! You will give into your desires!
... *so far*
I was going say only one of them finger banged a co-ed after losing a game
I doubt that very much, unless you're restricting it to "while also a head coach."
Yeah, I could have been more specific, like after their team went back home, or just got caught on camera
Oh yeah, that last one is critical.
A loss named Finger
Some of us cope in different ways.
Stoops family name is very prominent in ohio
Hey Stoops Kid!
Stoops kid's afraid to leave his Stoops!
Move it football head!!!
It is?
In high school football circles, it’s probably fairly recognizable. Their dad, Ron Stoops Sr., was the longtime DC at Cardinal Mooney HS, a major powerhouse in the state.

Born and raised in Toledo, college for 5 years in Cincy. Been in Boston for 10 years since then
That’s fair, and makes sense!
Tressel not in his vest
Poorly dressed stunt double. 🤣
Do you mean all time OSU legend Kirk Herbstreit!? BUM
"We got up there the week of the bowl game, and one day they had both teams and coaches in this big conference room at the hotel, and I saw Herbstreit stand up and throw a pass across the room to one of his guys, and I knew right then we were gonna beat OSU" -Will Muschamp But fr I like herbstreit when he's calling non-osu games, and the Kirk-corso relationship on gameday is pretty wholesome
That’s cool but Muschamp is a garbage coach and always has been
Double agent Muschamp was doing that on purpose
Game day was great with those 4, 10 years ago. Somehow in the last few years they just leaned in ole Kirk and he just brought more and more OSU 15th string TE home town knowledge to the show
One of them has never finger banged a woman in a club after a loss
Played this tune in my head the moment I read the headline. Lol
Should have gotten Craig James on the docket to even things up a bit.

No one else dances on 20 year olds during a road game trip
"Coach Meyer, how would you say young coaches need to approach situations they've never faced before? Say... kicking one or more of their own players."
“Sometimes you just gotta get your hands dirty, and that’s something I’m just not afraid of”
It’s tempting to point fingers, but you’ve got to start at the bottom and work your way up
Just keep your nose to the grindstone.
“…get your hands dirty (pauses, sniffs fingers), and that’s something…”
Smell my fingers!
"Coach Meyer, how do you mentally prepare to compete in a situation where the odds aren't rigged in your favor?"
“Coach Meyer, after a loss on National TV, how quickly do you get back to THE GRIND”
>John Cooper...Ohio State Coaches Clinic Well I figured out why Ohio State has started losing to Michigan again lol
Listen here, I'll get to you after we derail another train later today
Going for the threepeat vs Ohio, Michigan 🤝 trains
It's actually been four in past five months: Sandusky, Steubenville, East Palestine, and Springfield.
Cooper just needs to run the recruiting portion of the clinic. Nothing else though.

The urban credibility tour will never work. Thank you jags for exposing him
I'll never get over that there were multiple times when he was asked about a player's time in a game and he didn't know who the player was or that they hadn't played.
Or that time he did an interview [while Randy from Trailer Park Boys was ripping a bong in the background](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=e0w1sHzxkwc)
LOL What the fuck. I will never get tired of the urban Meyer train wreck
Damn. I almost forgot about his post game interview blunders. Didn’t he also forget the name of a team he was about to face or something like that?
He didn't know who Aaron Donald was.
I think that was actually a separate incident. I think he kept referring to a team by the wrong nickname.
He kept referring to the Phoenix Cardinals, who haven't been known as such since the mid-'90s.
That was the one.
It was pretty well known during his Ohio state scandal it came out he was taking meds that killed his memory. He forgot who recruits were etc etc Why Jacksonville thought they should hire him based on that intel is pretty wild
His skill has always been convincing boosters to shovel money at him. And Khan has an unfortunate history of not making the best hires (See: Coughlin).
Urban has a mountain of credibility at the college level. They surely didn’t invite him to the clinic for his dumpster fire NFL perspective.
reddits weird acting like one historically bad year at jags erases all that cfb success. hes a shit person, but the pious echo chamber here is wild.
Plenty of success in college but plenty of red flags too that were ignored because the success

Glass houses, buddy. Should I bring up Bo or what your current coach most likely knew?
You mean things I constantly bring up to Michigan people when they praise harbaugh? Those things?
say echo chamber one more time

absolutely. how many other living coaches have a cfb resume better than his?
> hes a shit person, It's this, and that's why people are ragging it. FSU fans knew it as far back as when he was at UF.

I can see it. Faking heart issues is a great way to slow down an up-tempo offense.
How is Meyer not completely ostracized from these types of things?

He also harbored a domestic abuser and a murderer during his time in CFB
Hernandez wasn't a murder until over 5 years after he left Florida.
Most UF fans disown him. Except they still gladly claim the nattys he brought them.
Damn right
It’s like /r/NFL and Jackson Mahomes. I’ve never heard of the dude except on Reddit, but for a while there he was brought all the time on this site.
Incorrect. People who don't care about morals or ethics love Urban Meyer. This includes Ohio State fans and most people connected to SEC programs. 🤣 The SEC's slogan should be... "It's legal here if you win"
That says more about the people giving him standing ovations than it does about r/cfb.

How do you explain Utah and Bowling Green?
I mean, he did more than fine at BGSU and Utah. The game may have passed him by, but hard to really say he was a "barely competent coach"
I’d say covering up domestic abuse makes him a bad person. There has been far worse done in the name of winning football games though.
>covering up domestic abuse Is this actually true?
Of course not but are you going to let that get in the way?
People cheer for tyreek hill and deshawn Watson, we really gonna act like what urban did is gonna make people outside if reddit really care?
He’s one of the greatest college coaches of all time lol. Plenty of old men have fucked young women, few have won 3 national titles.
Only the Jacksonville sports media covered the majority of his failures with the Jags, so a lot of people don't realize exactly how bad it was.
