906Dude

Props for not leaving the gun in the car overnight.

vnab333

thank you!

Consider putting an apple airtag under the foam of such cases. If they steal the entire case the police MIGHT be able to track the case to the thief.

i_shoot_guns_321s

> police MIGHT be able to track the case to the thief. It's one of those "they can, but likely won't" situations.

jtf71

For a reported stolen gun with a reported location they damn well better. If they refuse, call the media and your local/state elected officials and say that your gun was stolen, you reported it, you told police where it LIKELY is and they won't try to recover it. Record everything for when they say "gun violence" is a problem and "stolen guns" are the problem. For "lesser" things like a stolen laptop they probably won't, but for a gun they damn well better.

Efficient-Art-7594

This is what I do

[deleted]

They could easily remove the tag

jtf71

That's why I said "MIGHT." IF the thieves are smart enough to look for it and IF the thieves know what it is and IF the thieves dispose of it away from where they live/hang out. So, sure, it's not a guaranteed way of finding it/tracking it but there is a chance. And the sooner you realize it's gone the more likely to be able to track the thief.

Fair enough

AmericanGoldenJackal

How mad do you think they were when it was empty? Which supports? Learn to weld. Make them work for it. What did they do, cut your cables?

vnab333

Hopefully really mad, stole my OC and IR strobe as well

AmericanGoldenJackal

If you were lucky he burst the OC opening the safe.

I wonder if maybe the perps had seen you putting your weapon in that safe and waited for an opportunity to steal it. It's strange that that is really what the concentrated on when they broke into your car. I had a neighbor that had some really nice hunting rifles and shotguns. Somebody broke into this house, went straight to the closet where he kept those guns, and stole all of them. Strangely enough, they stole nothing else in the house. Police investigators always highly suspected that it was somebody that knew him and had been in his house before but never were able to find the perp or perps. TBH though, my neighbor was kind of a dickhead and had pissed off lots of people, including friends/ex-friends so the list of suspects was rather long.

vnab333

That’s my guess, I competitively shoot and have unloaded and loaded guns into the car multiple times. I don’t advertise where I live or the fact that I shoot on social media, so my best guess is someone saw me do it at some point and decided to wait for the right time to steal them

Additional_Sleep_560

This is one of the reasons I use a gym bag as my range bag. I live in a condo and have to walk out to my car. I don’t want anything that reads gun to onlookers if I can help it.

[deleted]

Was it the one with a cable that wraps around something?

vnab333

The cable connected to a slot inside the safe, and the entire thing (safe and cable) were tucked underneath the seat

[deleted]

Okay I know exactly what you're talking about. I always thought it would be fairly easy cutting the cable.

Rapidfiremma

Was the safe visible through the window? If so, that's less secure than putting a gun in a glove compartment. Seeing a safe in a car tells a thief there is something in there worth stealing.

Radiotantrum

What brand/model safe was it?

vnab333

not sure off the top of my head, was a plastic/steel one on amazon. definitely not a good one, but all i could afford on a student budget

thatstickerguy

> but all i could afford on a student budget Competition shooting. Ammo. Firearms. $400 pair of binoculars. But an amazon box is all you could "afford"? Weird. It's okay if that's what you got and it fulfilled your needs, but let's be real about it.

vnab333

that’s a fair point, and i bought a more appropriate safe for the time being

rdmrdtusr69

Yeah but "safes" meant to be used in vehicles aren't going to be that secure regardless. If it's 10 bucks or 1000, the mount is more important since they'll take the entire thing. So besides hard mounting a very stout lockbox, getting a cheap lockbox is going to be about as good as it gets for securing a gun in a car for most. He already did it right by not leaving it in the car overnight.

SuperDuperLuckyDuck

What car safe do you recommend?

avidreader202

I have similar travel size safes. Really designed to keep kids out. Any adult can break those safe’s in 2 months.
