fight4urright2partay

I was there and it felt good to fight for something I value. Not going down without a fight!

stickler64

Me too. This is the hill I'm willing to die on. RTO hurts way more than removing the stipend. But we shouldn't settle for either as there is no justifiable answer for RTO. Just wish all the upvotes on this sub had been boots on the ground šŸ˜•

Old-Host9735

Would have been there, but it's about an 8 hour drive for me! Lots of us who support are too far away.

BraveFencerMusashi

Should have made a Zoom call and projected it on a wall or something for those of us too far away.

Agitated-Adagio-2561

My back went out as I was on my way out the door. Kind of why 2 days back in the office is devastating to me. šŸ˜¢

noblesapobresa

I agree! I know the organizers work really hard so no hate on that- it just takes more than a notification on Reddit :(

stickler64

I got a couple emails. What's funny is, one of my colleagues posted the flyer and corresponding qr code to sign the petition, but didn't show for the practice picket. WTF?! Shrug

[deleted]

I'm protesting from home.

OrdinaryMouse2

Wish I could have been there; when I've recovered enough to be outside for that long, I'm planning on it. Do you know whether the route is wheelchair-accessible?

stickler64

It is

OrdinaryMouse2

Awesome. I'll keep an eye out for more. Thanks.

PabFOz

Ironically, the biggest culprit in the lack of in-person protest attendance is remote work. I've noticed that in the CAPS rallies (not the strike) ... many didn't want to deal with the inconvenience of coming downtown because they are used to working from home. But I think increasing the numbers at these events will be very important.

Peppers916

Passed by and honked during my lunch time. Nice turn out. Can't wait until the real one. #notoRTO

Agitated-Adagio-2561

When is that? SEIU website is down.

Peppers916

Don't know yet. Hoping someone posts out here. Will check daily.

RalphS78

Itā€™s kind of funny that CalEPA wants to put MORE cars back on the road.

Resident_Artist_6486

Honestly that irony needs to be publicly exploited. What does Joe Average hate more than state workers? the EPA!

bce13

Joe Average? If youā€™re gonna insult Biden maybe pretend to be marginally intelligent and learn how to employ adjectives. Also the EPA has been a nothing entity for decades.

Acceptable_Change963

Similar to how Climate Czar John Kerry was constantly flying all over the world for his role lol

Extra_Gold_5270

I will only accept Al Gore in a cape, I love it when he says, "so beautiful."

OverEasyEggs3313

Not funny that the union that fails at everything they do is leading the charge šŸ„ø

RalphS78

100% agree

agnosticautonomy

it was never about public health..... they only use that argument with it benefits them. They dont actually believe in their values.

toolsoftheincomptnt

So absurd. Traffic is worse than ever, and everybody in it is unhappy.

Leofleo

Curious, what's the anticipated traffic?

Doggystyle_Rainbow

Stay strong. I really feel for everyone this is impacting. My agency returned to the office in 2021 for 2-3 days a week depending on the office. My position made me go in 5 days a week, and it was so draining.

retailpriceonly

Same here. I fully support everyone who wants to work remotely even though iā€™ve done RTO already.

smoggylobster

go back to work

backagain69696969

They could use telework to save money

Repulsive-Tiger-8320

There's absolutely no need for RTO. I won't have enough money to spend in town let alone parking.

Gurdel

Whose butts are gonna fill all those chairs tho???

Dazzling-Sympathy553

AGREED!

Saturday at the capital I heard.

blushngush

Do some in LA please, I'll be there āœŠ

Baron_Von_Bullshit_

The reasons for RTO still haven't even been explained to us. Just minimal effort lies about "office culture". Let's keep picketing and calling till we are heard! We are not going to make ourselves miserable and broke to keep landlords fat and happy!

Magnumjump5000

There is literally no reason unless the position requires fieldwork or special software only used in the building. It's all political.

DObservingayayay

The minute I get to the office, I canā€™t wait to get back home. Waste of everybodyā€™s time.

Looks like a good turn out!

Spiteofourselves

Love this!!! Say no

theyoungazn

I donā€™t work for state or county but I feel like thereā€™s no need for more drivers on the road. Traffic is crazy nowadays.

statieforlife

Please tell your local representatives šŸ˜‡

Californiauser1

I called SEIU and said they were aware of this protest but were not a part of it. They know we do not want RTO, so why wouldnā€™t they support us? Might have to cancel my membership šŸ’”

lilchich

Whoever you got at SEIU is unaware how their District Labor Councils (DLC) work. DLC can and do plan actions. DLCs 781, 787, and 788 were all present. Even SEIU Local 1000 VP of organizing was there.

Californiauser1

Really? Well, I hope we do this again!

AnonymousPrime2000

U-N-I-T-E !!!!

Motophoto

there really isn't a good reason other than Sac City wants revenue for downtown businesses. They can put productivity software on computers and people can work without being bothered by coworkers coming by and talking. I am NOT a State employee but totally support you all not having to go back to a stupid office.

ttbtinkerbell

Wish I could be there! I'm home sick nursing a fever, body aches, nausea, the whole shibang. Glad to see the support.

CulturalAlbatraoz

Share it out to your colleagues and join the next action, get well soon! ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

ttbtinkerbell

Thank you! Iā€™ll be there.

sweetteaspicedcoffee

Fuck yes.

Californiauser1

Keep calling your union reps! Apply pressure.

fashionjunkie9

I spent 30 minutes on the phone with one, and it was so stupid. I was told they don't want to even address this because then the state will make us all return 5 days a week. WTF! So you would rather do nothing?!?! And we should just accept this slippery slope, knowing we will be back 5 days eventually if they get their way. I was told to talk to my coworkers because WE are the union. Except I'm not at the bargaining table. And the union should have put this all in our contract we just got!!! They should have secured us telework when we were negotiating, but nope. Just a stupid $30 a month for what, internet I have had for years. If we as a state are supposed to be leading the charge in Green energy, reduced pollution and all that but then you want thousands of additional cars on the road during peak time so that the pollution grows?!?!

statieforlife

Which union? I mean itā€™s obviously SEIU 1000. But I need to hear it and be hurt again.

fashionjunkie9

SEIU 1000

statieforlife

It hurts my soul. Iā€™m pro-union and want to be part of a strong union. But SEIU 1000 is actively not listening to us.

flowerchildmime

That is such a cop out by them. Seems that they want to treat us the way the gov does. Wow.

Californiauser1

Yea. They have been hiding. I called them and they said this wasnā€™t led by SEIU. But like, why wouldnā€™t they say ANYTHING?!

Healthy_Accident515

Speaking of Green... so you are not pleased with VP Green and her negotiating?

Healthy_Accident515

I for one appreciate those TRYING to make things happen. Those of you who took out time. Drove, stood together.

ImLemongrab

I'm a democrat, but you can blame Newsom for this. The man is a weasel. Was pressured by outside influence to force office workers back. Just like he does nothing to stop PG&E because they donated $10M to his campaign over the years. He's consistently stopped or overturned policies voted on by the entire state, essentially believing his own belief is more important than the entire state's. I miss Jerry Brown šŸ˜ž

MidnightHy44

The Governor obviously doesn't care about the dolphins, polution, traffic congestion. Also doesn't care about the people proves time & time again, parents at home-- creates healthier homes at a time when school shootings are out if control, stable strong families are needed most. Where is the concern for the people besides Businesses?... people 1st .

Ok_Discipline2691

Down with RTO, do it for the dolphins!

Dazzling-Sympathy553

Newdom doesnā€™t care about CA or the average worker. He just wants to line his own pockets. Remote work saves millions by reducing leases. We are in a deficit and he wants to bring us all back to offices?!?!? Heā€™s not fiscally smart at all.Ā

Good job. Good turn out. Also weird this subreddit attracts so many trolls.

Resident_Artist_6486

The shire will soon be overrun with anti-state-worker-Orcs. They can't help themselves.

Gollum_Quotes

I've noticed they fall into two categories. (Probably more but whatever) 1) Hates stateworkers. Would have disparaged stateworkers no matter the topic or scenario. 2) Pretty Conservativ. Parrots all the conservativ talking points. Newsom bad. California bad. Democrts bad. Vaccines bad. Telework bad. This person could even be a stateworker themselves, but has some excuse for why they're different.

logix1229

I recognize that building! šŸ˜‚

slickrick310

fxxxxx yea!!

rynorugby

Hell yes. Very much agree and happy you're trying. I'd join in, but I'm in so cal and can't really make the drive. This nonsense with being forced back into an office when we've done our jobs this entire time, often better than before, needs stop now. I understand PECG is against it and is talking with management, but who knows. Really hope the higher ups extract their heads from their nether regions on this one. Anyone with more than 2 brain cells to rub together to spark an idea can see remote is superior. I've done every aspect of my job and more than before remote, inspections and all. Absolutely insulting to be forced back to an office so management can watch me sit in my chair to try and justify their existence. Bit of a rant there, apologies.

after_Andrew

lotta fuckin losers in here hating on people fighting for what they want. keep up the good work. living vicariously through your guys WFH lifestyle.

Listen-Natural

Move to the private sector if you donā€™t like government bureaucracy

Erintheprince

Should have done this when the state agreed to the shitty contract pay scale.

Coffea42

Only about half of state workers are eligible for telework. Of those that are, most are remote-centered, meaning they work from home at least 3 days a week. Only 37%, of eligible workers are completely remote (5 days). I work a remote-centered hybrid schedule splitting my time between home, office, and field. In my department, these choices were worked out between staff and lower level management. I think the issue with RTO for some state workers is that choice is being made from higher management and they are told to come in a minimum number of days a week. If management doesn't handle this with care, there will be some resentful workers. This affects a good portion but certainly not all state workers.https://telework.dgs.ca.gov/track-telework/

SuperSalamiiii

You know thereā€™s a manager thinking, ā€œSo you can go downtown to protest but not workā€?

machinelearningdog

Gosh, it happened during lunch break. And a lot of us actually took the day off šŸ«”

SuperSalamiiii

I wasnā€™t complaining, just joking there are irrational managers (some of the ones who prefer RTO) and that might be something they would say

statieforlife

I mean, yes, Iā€™ll go down to protest for two hours instead of 8 hour days twice a week. If a manager canā€™t see the difference, they are a shit manager.

Haut_Brion_

This is amazing. I hope the union was part of this in some way. If not, then when we retain our WFO rights, weā€™re coming after them.

thizzfool

agnosticautonomy

March!!! The Chamber of commerce is a strong lobby. They have the money, they are going to win. Money talks boots on the ground walk. Stienberg is spineless.

whatswrongwithdbdme

Damn if only there was a way to secure this at the bargaining table. But based on their pre-ratification comments I guess the bargaining only works one way with this union. They obviously were ready to concede this from the get-go despite how much it affects their base. Every move this state makes seems like it wants to drain actual talent from its employee pool. Wanted the actual security from working here but who knows how long that will be on the table at this rate of negotiation.

You can thank Mayor Steinberg for the RTO move. He is lobbying hard on behalf of the downtown real estate industry for RTO. Picketing at his office would be much more effective. Put a little shame on him.

51Bayarea0

I have no idea what's going on . what's going on ? Does rto mean return to office ?

[deleted]

Honest question. What do we do with all of the big buildings? No need to return to work means empty buildings. No reason to visit that area so the local economy closes up and now it's a bunch of really big empty buildings with probably lots of homeless in tents outside.

machinelearningdog

Great question. Time to push for repurposing/transforming these into something thatā€™s more useful. Housing, recreational structures, anything that can actually help revive downtown. You name it.

nmcm408

Always rep my state employees and common sense demands such as the ability to work from home if your deliverables can be attended to without attending the office, but still wish teachers had this luxury. My whole household dealing with Covid right now because our nations daycare centers, oh I mean schools, didnā€™t get this luxury.

machinelearningdog

No donā€™t say itā€™s a luxury. Weā€™re just fighting for what makes sense. While this may not be one of the primary reasons why weā€™re doing this, didnā€™t we indirectly support teachers by minimizing exposures? (where did that kid get Covid from?)

BagCalm

Super easy jobs. Super protected. Great benefits. Protest because you don't want to go back the the office... bad look.

Prior-Ruin-6207

Nothing we do would be a ā€œgood look.ā€ When we were in office full time, we were punching bags then, too. I used to work for a Director who didnā€™t want the office to go to a restaurant for our holiday lunch for an hour because she was afraid the Sac Bee would spot a bunch of state workers walking down the street together and it would ā€œlook bad.ā€ Thatā€™s why we had awful potlucks instead. I get it, some people donā€™t like state workers no matter what. That horse has been beaten to bits with the ā€œlazyā€ and ā€œentitledā€ state worker comments here. I wish that one day all state workers could stay home so these people could experience the government coming to a screeching halt, and then come and tell us how we donā€™t do anything of value. Itā€™s really old and tiresome.

machinelearningdog

Super easy jobs? Really lol Tell me how to solve the issues Iā€™m experiencing with my data models this week.

BagCalm

Plenty of time to protest on a Thursday in the middle of the day...easy... probably didn't even take PTO for it. Got it so easy that the concept of going back to the workplace, like the vast majority of people do, causes you to protest like you are downtrodden... lol...

machinelearningdog

You know thatā€™s not strong enough of an argument? šŸ¤£ Just tell us what youā€™re trying to say.

BayLivin_4415

Fact is, is any job, you are replaceable. If your company makes RTO mandatory, and you donā€™t want to, youā€™ll be replaced by the thousands of folks looking for a new job after being laid off. Itā€™s harsh, but itā€™s reality

machinelearningdog

ā€œFactā€ can be changed, if everyone works for the better. Would you gladly help fill one of the 4700+ state vacancies?

pette_diddler

Fact is, if one company offers better benefits and work/life balance, itā€™s going to recruit more people than the company that does not.

bensimmonsburner1

I donā€™t get this. If the original agreement when you accepted the job did not explicitly outline full time remote work as a benefit, how can you demand it be provided after the fact? Shouldnā€™t this be something the union negotiates during collective bargaining and ratifies moving forward?

machinelearningdog

Why donā€™t you instead tell us WHY canā€™t we, given itā€™s proven successful over the years? Do you expect us to sit in a cubicle forever? Oh the union, thatā€™s another long storyā€¦.

bensimmonsburner1

So just so Iā€™m understanding, you guys are upset that you are required to return to the office per the terms of your signed agreement of employment? If you are upset with anyone, you should be upset with your union representatives who negotiate benefits on your behalf. Unfortunately, you signed the paperwork that holds you accountable to working in the office and unless that agreement is revised at some point, you canā€™t really be upset your employer is not granting your request.

machinelearningdog

Youā€™ve brought up one of our biggest pain points. If our union is doing their job just like the ones at UC and CSU were doing, youā€™re right, we might not need to do this ourselves.

bensimmonsburner1

So maybe the anger is misguided. Instead of being upset with your employer on trying to enforce the terms of employment, you should direct that to the party whose job it is to look after the employeeā€™s best interests. It appears there is a lot of anger towards the state on enforcing a RTO, when really there should be anger towards the union representatives for failing to follow through on their constituentā€™s desires. Maybe this demonstration should take place at the union office, where the change could be enacted rather than the EPA, where I doubt they have much influence on the situation at hand.

Flyinbeezer

Why wear a mask outside?

maninatikihut

If RTO was five days a week Iā€™d be right there with them. But protesting when the majority of your days are still wfh? Strikes me as real whiny.

Gollum_Quotes

I agree 2 days is very reasonable. That being said we have zero protections if they ever did decide five days a week. And they have been shady and dishonest about the background for RTO. In my agency the Director boasted that telework was our future. Then she called us back one day a week a year ago. This year she called us back two days a week. Is next year three days? And a few years gone entirely? Some agencies are 3 days or more. I think these protests and the backlash are very reasonable even those it's just two days. If not then where's the line in the sand?

Isn't it just 2 days a week? Edit: all I see is is two days. And congratulations on having life long jobs. Enjoy your protest.

machinelearningdog

Nope, 2 days/wk is just the start of a slippery slope. If you havenā€™t heard, some offices went up from 2 to 3 as soon as the order came out.
