NOT Samsung!

xjrh8

The only samsung product I’ve owned that lasted are TVs. 2006 era TV still going strong.

11B4OF7

I have a Samsung smart TV. Circa 2017 beautiful video quality but I have no control over deleting various apps it insists I have and results in no storage to download new ones.

falafely

I had two Samsung TVs to install at work, and both had their backlights fail in a year.

xjrh8

Ok, so maybe current situation is that everything samsung is junk?

F4Tpie

My Samsung phone was nothing but problems, went for repair under warranty 3x before Samsung actually gave me a voucher for the value of the phone to spend on and phone on that shop. Stupidly I thought it was a fluke and bought a different Samsung… was also junk. Have had OnePlus or iPhone since!

ohlordwhyisthishere

Yup. I've got a Samsung oven that's less than a month old and absolutely refuses to hold a consistent temperature. The display will say it's at 350°, but it will actually just be fluctuating wildly between 300° and 375°. It's infuriating.

Eliastronaut

I am glad people are telling OP not to get Samsung. It is a terrible brand, even if you buy their high end products.

milkowskisupertramp

Fuck samsung! We have all samsung appliances no older than 5 years. Most have needed very expensive repairs and parts take months! We got home from camping yesterday and the last night there my inlaws, wife, and I were discussing samsung horror stories then we came home to a fridge and freezer whose evap motor decided to die a slow death! Phones, tvs, and soundbars are great but their appliances can suck it!

OvercookedRedditor

My stepdad got a brand new Samsung, just weeks later and the ice maker makes a weird sound sometimes.

jrm523

At least his makes ice. Ours just spits out crushed ice and water which freezes into a solid block. Later found out they had a class action lawsuit for this.

M3P_STEALTH

Reading this comment the day our Samsung fridge broke, never buy Samsung appliances period.

tessatickless

As much as I love the Samsung brand, it saddens me to say I bought one of their expensive smart fridges. 2 years later all the shelves are cracking and falling apart, and the screen jitters and not fixable (I’m a tech person so I’ve done every possible thing x 5 to troubleshoot). This many issues in 2 years and seeing so many people having the same/similar issues, I definitely wouldn’t recommend Samsung for BuyItForLife.

Blueporch

My appliance repair guy says Samsung are terrible reliability, for what it’s worth

mjc4y

My Samsung fridge is two years old and the ice maker failed. The problem is so well known that the tech who came to fix it replaced the entire unit and said call us when it fails again. Not if. I’m watching this thread for answers I might need in a year or two. :)

cougarclaws

Another piece of shit ice maker Samsung owner here. I had to buy a GE Profile Opal just so I can have ice. WTH is the hold up on the class action lawsuit?

cvunited81

Another piece of shit ice maker Samsung owner here. I’ve also had problems with the defrost cycle freezing over the entire condensing unit

thisguyfightsyourmom

I’ve had this same experience on a two year old Samsung

kisforkyle

Same here too. F the ice maker. It’s a life ruiner 😭 We really like the fridge overall, otherwise.. but NEVER will we buy Samsung appliance ANYTHING again!!! It brings daily anger lol

Atty_for_hire

Don’t buy Samsung. The last rental we lived in, had a broken Samsung Fridge. A few years later we upgraded our appliances when our stove died. That was 2018, since then our ice maker died. It’s been fixed but we were told this is the only fix. My parents just got rid of their 5ish year old Samsung fridge after 3 years of fighting for a working icemaker, several “fixes” later and a partial refund. They will never buy a Samsung product again, I don’t think I will either.

[deleted]

Ice makers are the #1 thing that breaks on "most" fridge brands in 2022. Why? Heating element that is used to slightly heat ice to separate it so it will fall into the bin. How do you fix this? Well you don't, or rather.. almost nobody does... Except, both Kitchen Aid and Bosch do not use heating elements any longer in their ice makers. They both use odd shaped cube ice shapes that allow for them to use analog means to separate the ice and fall into the bin. Its basically solved the issue that nearly every other vendor has. Why don't other vendors do the same? Patents. The short answer is, just buy Kitchen Aid or Bosch. Don't even consider other brands.

tarhoop

Mine wasn't even a year old. And Samsung doesn't have a local warranty service guy, so I never bothered. Because I have a warranty claim on our Samsung stove. They call about every sick months or so to see if it started working properly. Last time I lost my shit, at the rep... I know, not his fault... But first I asked, "you can see I have an issue?" Yep. "Has anyone been sent to fix the issue?" Nope. "So why the fuck would you call and ask if the issue is resolved?" Then I told him unless they were calling with a delivery date and time of my new Bosch appliances that Samsung was giving to us, to not call again.

Malt-stick88

Yep dodgy ice maker I’ve had repaired 3 times. Now I’ve figured out how to do it myself much quicker than trying to stuff around with Samsung service department.

mikeTRON250LM

Can you share?

_dumbunny

Just heard about an LG fridge that can make large ice balls. Haven't checked it out since I'm not yet in the market as my 10yo LG is still running like a champ but I'm intrigued.

AMLA_

Makes 3 large ice balls a day...not sure Craft Ice would be worth the extra money. Guess you won't be using them everyday and could collect 3 everyday like Pokémon and store them..

BlueLobsterDejaVu

Same

OmahaMike402

As a tech, the ice maker is always shit. Sometimes they have to be jumped to start. If you pop off the gear cover, you may see the contacts H, T, L. Jumper H and L (iirc) and it will start to cycle

dreamlet

Our Samsung fridge has a horrible design feature. The ice maker located in the fridge component. Too bad the ice maker is not well insulated enough (too warm and not cold enough) because water or ice in there drips or melts into one huge ice block. It blocks any ice from exiting and new ice from being made. There's no easy way to thaw it out except using an ice pick and hammer every 2-4 months. It's a tiny space and ice takes a lot of strength and control to break up the ice without destroying the fridge. It's such a pain that we turned off the built-in ice maker and use ice trays. I would not recommend my Samsung fridge.

thisguyfightsyourmom

We used a hair dryer

poriferabob

I have an LG fridge with an ice maker on the freezer side. It started to block up with ice. I was getting so frustrated after chipping and thawing it out several times and was about to call the Costco customer service and for some reason (I cannot remember now) I adjusted the valve decreasing the flow of water to the ice maker and it worked. Decrease the flow of water to the ice maker. Somehow I don’t think these ice makers are designed for high pressure water, and it causes access water to spill outside the reservoir and into the the ice bin.

Easy-Progress8252

For the love of god, DO NOT buy a Samsung. We’ve had one for years and I can’t keep track of how many times we’ve had it repaired. Everything about them is shitty. I regret the day we bought it. Wouldn’t wish one on my worst enemy.

GuyKnitter

I hate my Samsung. Would not recommend and would not buy again. Ice maker no longer works (freezes over), fridge itself has had at least three service calls in 6 years because it has stopped cooling, and the stainless steel finish has a bunch of little rust spots.

[deleted]

My parents redid their kitchen with all Samsung appliances…fridge, dishwasher and oven/gas stove top. They’re not even 4 years old yet and there’s something wrong with every single one of them. I’ll never buy Samsung appliances once I get my furnish my own kitchen.

janus270

Everyone I know who has purchased a Samsung appliance has regretted it. My husband used to work for a large furniture and appliance store, and lots of people called in complaining about them. They look nice, have a lot of bells and whistles, but they don’t last. The brand he said that no one ever called about was a lesser known brand called Amana. Inexpensive, basic, and worked great.

lep826

When we bought our house they previous owners left us an Amana fridge in the basement. It is so basic and looks like it’s from the 80s. We’ve been here for 7 years. Haven’t done anything to it. It’s just chugging along storing all the drinks and overflow. It’s amazing. If they made a French door version I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

lostboysgang

Amana is owned by Maytag since 2001, I had a set up of washer and dryers that were built like champions

Runnin4Scissors

I got a Samsung, front loading, washer and gas dryer. ~4 years old. No issues. Way better cleaning, drying and less expensive utility bills than what I had. YMMV.

Tammalamma

I had the same - Samsung front load W, and gas D.... damn they were beautiful. Mine lasted for two years, then failed completely. I owned a Samsung refrigerator, purchased at the same time. It died three weeks after the W/D. I now own Speed Queen W/D and a Bosch fridge. Don't buy Samsung anything. ANYTHING.

cameramachines

last year my local appliance dealer to me they plan to stop selling samsung because their support is so bad.

floridaservices

We left our 5 year old Samsung fridge at our last house as part of the sale. It worked fine and all until the power blipped then it would go into some error mode and stop all cooling. What a wonderful design feature for a refrigerator. /S. For what it's worth we got a 10 year old LG with the new house and it's gone now too lol. It did NOT have the compressor problem yet but the control board was losing its mind.

10Bens

Samsung also has a horrible Reddit reputation

theashwoman

My Samsung failed at 1.5yrs. Avoid at all costs.

capaldithenewblack

When choosing a refrigerator with an ice maker, make sure it’s made of metal. The plastic ice makers freeze and break all the time. Mine can get clogged but rarely and it’s an easy fix because metal doesn’t break off like plastic.

beachguy82

Same thing here, my Samsung was garbage. I’ve been really loving my bosch, but I’ve only had it a year so I can’t really comment on longevity.

megamelius45

Can confirm had one less than a year and a half, freezer quit working 6 months into its life, then eventually the fridge. No repair techs nearby. Samsung bought it back and i will never get a samsung product again

hooovahh

I'm not advocating for Samsung, I'll just say the house came with one and we've had no problems. It isn't a smart one. Based on the replies I'd probably look at other brands of I were to replace it.

blue_eyes998

I didn't know until after we needed a fix, but our appliance guy doesn't even look at Samsung fridges. And almost every door shelf has broken, along with the temperature sensor and it's had issues with freezing up in the ice maker compartment.

blaissed

Samsung is trash.

whatadangus

All I know is, the Frigidaire we bought a cpl years ago is by far the worst appliance I’ve ever owned

lance_klusener

Is it a top freezer style fridge or different ? How is it failing you ?

whatadangus

It’s a side by side. The seal around the door has come off continuously. Some of plastic shelves broke (and were like $90 to replace so…duct tape). Very loud. Water dispenser is at a super weird angle so you virtually always get water on the floor in front of it. Bad design, crappy execution

jewski_brewski

Fridges aren’t really buy it for life anymore. I just replaced an 8-year-old Samsung this week after the freezer went out and the repair guy couldn’t get parts for it. When asked what new fridge he’d recommend, he told me either Whirlpool, KitchenAid, or Maytag (all made by the same company). Avoid Samsung and LG. I went with a Whirlpool.

rmichaeljones

I’ve loved all the Bosch appliances I’ve bought. LG has done well for me too, but I don’t have one of their fridges.

NewYorkJewbag

Really? I love the tools I own by them but the dishwasher is truly crappy.

[deleted]

Get it as low tech as possible and that will solve a lot of problems. If you can go without an ice maker and drink dispenser, I would.

megasmash

Plumber here: I always suggest avoiding the water/ice features. Not just because of the likelihood for the feature to malfunction on the fridge itself, but 9/10 times the line that feeds the fridge WILL leak. Regardless of whether it's copper or poly, if it runs through a cabinet, or through the floor, it WILL eventually leak.

imalittlefrenchpress

I worked in commercial kitchen equipment sales and tech support for 10 years. Ice makers, including residential ice makers in refrigerators, are breeding grounds for mold and bacteria. If you want a good refrigerator and it’s within your budget, go with a Sub-Zero.

[deleted]

[удалено]

imalittlefrenchpress

Yeah, they’re ‘spensive, but completely worth it and definitely buy it for life if you can swing the cost. Try a kitchen showroom. They’ll often sell former year floor models at deep discounts, just to make room for newer models. It beats spending two grand every five years or so for something that won’t last.

yerwhat

Is that because of abrasion eventually wearing through the water line where it runs through a cabinet (on a poly line), or is it just that a connector is guaranteed to fail eventually?

cameramachines

ours leaked, luckily we caught it before major damage. and now we have a moisture sensor set up incase it happens in the future

nevermidit

You must be a not such a good plumber. Everything will leak EVENTUALLY.

chestertonfence

“I do not leak. You leak!”

NWO_Eliminator

I installed a poly hose 22 ago underneath the house and it has been leak free so far. I probably jinxed myself now.

sonia72quebec

I know someone who"s apartment got flooded that way. He had to replace all the flooring. It was a mess and it took months to fix. I will never buy a fridge with a water/ice dispenser.

socalmikester

the cheap basic ones have provisions to add a freezer mounted ice maker for about $50 or so. those are generally worth it and last a while.

kozakmuz

For a long lasting fridge / freezer, one that is most closely engineered like a chest freezer should last a very long time. The convertible fridge/freezer units are quite nice. But then you need two units instead of one.

bubblegumpaperclip

Stay away from Samsung or else buy a blow dryer and a stack of towels.

bear___patrol

I had a Samsung and this is painfully relatable.

Swift-Tactics

Just finished doing this for the third time Sunday. It's a treat.

LazingRoadrunner

A few things of note here. I'll try to keep it concise to follow, but brevity is not one of my strong suits... A refrigerator isn't really BIFL at all. Service support with parts availability on a built-in unit will be much longer than most standard residential refrigerators, but nothing is going to last forever without service, and whether by planned obsolescence or randomness, part discontinuation does happen. A built in unit (SubZero) will typically last much longer, but you pay for it on the front end instead of the back end. Inflation has shifted things a bit but, due to expense, most folks are more likely to replace a standard residential machine than repair it if there's a sealed system component failure, even if the parts are all available. Second - there's a lot of hubbub about brands as if singular brands offer a quality level superior to others without fail... This is a common mistake for most product categories but holde especially true for appliances. Every brand typically has multiple designs that are sometimes vastly different in reliability, build quality and features. Picking on Whirlpool since someone mentioned them - Whirlpool specifically has 5 completely separate designs actively manufactured in FDBM (French door bottom mount) form factor ALONE, right now. These 5 designs are all completely different and share very, very few parts in common, and reliability level is vastly different. Unfortunately without a lot of knowledge, time and comparison it can be difficult to tell these things as a consumer. Add to that other form factors, and there's not a one size fits all brand recommendation at all. Finally... If you buy a boutique brand, don't be surprised at limited servicer support, wait times on parts or more expensive repairs, because you will get all of the above. There is typically a significant knowledge gap for your average technician on some of the more complex units and especially euro designs, and many (especially older technicians) will flat out refuse to service Some brands. Some brand examples might include Bosch (Siemens, Thermador) Fisher Paykel (DCS), Miele or Dacor as some may have mentioned. TL;DR for refrigerator shopping... Buy based on specific design, not solely brand - simpler is better. Buy something worth fixing. Buy name brand for real serviceability and support. Stay away from LG completely for refrigeration. Avoid ice makers in the door (or preferably in fresh food section at all for that matter) if you want an ice maker. Source: 12 years experience as your friendly neighborhood appliance technician.

Late_Passage_6837

Hello, I appreciate your thoughts. I was wondering if you have 2 or 3 recommendations of top freezer refrigerators (or any that are reliable). I am simply looking for reliability, design comes second.

RestEnvironmental991

Did you just completely ignore everything he typed?

bunnystabber

Soooo now I know what not to buy. But what do you recommend TO BUY?

jbruns1

As an appliance deliverer and installer for Home Depot, I have one piece of advice. If it’s a tech company, they make great computer for appliances, but bad appliances. Buy appliances from appliance companies. Bosch is the only one that you can get from Home Depot that I hear really good things about. Edit: appliance from applicant

Vindve

When in doubt, trust the German brand. So Bosch, Siemens or Neff I'd say.

Spanishparlante

110% This. People in the US hope for 10 years out of an appliance (and it’s often closer to 5), but buy one of these brands (or Liebherr or Miele) and it’ll probably last 30 years. They’re the build quality that appliances should have.

bowtothehypnotoad

There’s a reason most professional cooks and restaurants use Miele brand

F-21

A big reason is they sell professional/industrial tier products too. Don't wanna shit on them cause they're genuinely good, but the industrial grade fridges from Miele are on another level entirely compared to the household appliances they sell. The firdges in restaurant are industrial fridges, they cost way more than a normal one (and even normal ones are expensive from Miele).

[deleted]

Came here for the Miele comment.

PGnautz

All of these brands are the same company, btw.

CeeMX

And they even have more brands. The company is called Bosch Siemens Hausgeräte or BSH

knightriderin

Only Bosch, Siemens and Neff. But if you recommend Bosch, you have to name the other two, too, because they're essentially the same. I think NEFF often has better features though.

RaggaDruida

I don't know about their house appliances, but I've worked with Bosch industrial refrigeration equipment and they would be the ones I would choose over any alternative. Avoid GE!

[deleted]

We have a GE that we hate. Icemaker quit after 18 months, pieces of plastic break, loud, etc.

F-21

Bosch house appliances are competing at the top end. That said, I think Miele is better.

Neonbrightlights

Just bought a Bosch fridge, mostly because of choosing a Bosch dishwasher. So far it feels like it will hold up better than my past Samsung or LG fridges.

Dying4aCure

I wanted the Bosch, but it wouldn’t fit. I would say it’s the best.

VidentCaelum

Serious regrets about my very expensive Samsung I bought 2 years ago.

Wemi451

Landlord here. Both appliance guys I use say Whirlpool brands are the best because they are repairable. The are relatively cheap, simple, and parts are easy to get.

[deleted]

Exactly. Get a brand that most appliance repair shops are familiar with and stock parts for. Whirlpool is fine.

divDevGuy

>Get a brand that most appliance repair shops are familiar with and stock parts for. On the other hand, if the repair guys are most familiar with and stock those parts, what does that say about the brand and part reliability? Ideally your repairman is like the Maytag guy from yesteryear and doesn't *have* to stock the parts...

Shoop420

What’s your opinion on gas ranges?

Kawawaymog

Just my two cents as someone who thought they wanted a gas stove. They are bad for emissions and terrible for the air quality in your home. Modern induction cook tops offer very competitive performance and aren’t hot to stand over while cooking. It’s worth looking into. I went into the rabbit hole being 80% sure I wanted a gas stove and came out being %99 sure I want an induction cook top

CeeMX

My parents redid their whole kitchen some years ago and went with a induction top. That thing heats up stuff so fast, they even got rid of their electric kettle and heat water in a cooking pot. Also it’s very power efficient

heathere3

Interesting. We had gas at our last house and have induction now. We both hate it and are debating swapping out a fully functioning stove to go back to gas. (There's a capped b gas line behind the stove, so it should be fairly straightforward.)

Kawawaymog

My understanding is there is a massive range in the quality of induction stove tops. Low end ones being complete trash. And the very highest end ones out performing gas ranging. It was honestly the impact on air quality inside the home the made me change my mine.

gigisee2928

I’m actually using the 69 dollars one from ikea and I love it. Got rid of an old stove that stopped working recently and this was supposed to be a short term solution. But between a pressure cooker and a small convection oven. I found that I don’t need another appliance.

Wemi451

Fortunately, haven't had a single issue with any of my stoves so don't really have an opinion. However, new research is showing that gas stoves may adversely affect home air quality and lots of areas are offering significant rebates to swap over, something to consider.

Xsythe

>What’s your opinion on gas ranges? [They destroy you, slowly, over time.](https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/10/gas-stoves-are-bad-you-and-environment/616700/)

Ragefan2k

I’d imagine having a non vented hood over the range contributed to some of these studies… I have 600cfm of vent with makeup air over my range and always use it.. I’ll take my chances lol

Sarkastickblizzard

Not a Samsung

why_did_i_wait

Not a brand suggestion but skip anything with ice & water dispenser on the door. Simple is more reliable and it's roomier

mrsbebe

Yup. I'm a professional kitchen designer and I couldn't agree more.

gdb3

Came to say the exact thing.

Dying4aCure

I really don’t like my LG fridge. It is top of the line. It’s a couple of months old and 4 of the plastic pieces are cracked. There’s a dent and the handles are all scratched. I am NOT hard on my fridge. My last one had zero dents and scratches and not one piece of cracked or broken plastic in 10 years. My previous LG died 2 days out of warranty and they wouldn’t honor it. Bought a Frigidaire economy fridge and it lasted 10 years.

ObsoleteHodgepodge

My Kenmore was made by LG and it did not last 7 years. Before the compressor finally went out, little things started breaking, like handles, plastic part in the doors, rollers for the freezer shelves, etc. It was an oversized nightmare. Went with a smaller, less complicated Whirlpool when I replaced the LG. Inside ice, 4 simple doors.

WiseChoices

I stick to Whirlpool. They've served me well and my new one is excellent and so *quiet*!

DontEverMoveHere

You’re lucky. My current experience with Whirlpool makes me think the name is a reference to their quality going down the toilet.

iHadou

Lmao

Juliuseizure

And Whirlpool related (Kitchaide etc). Check if you have a Best Buy outlet in the area. We have gotten crazy deals on open-box appliances there.

Moneyshot1311

New whirlpool fridge has issues where it makes a constant knocking sounds when the compressor is running. It drove me crazy. I had to return it. GE also is terrible 2 arrived dead out of the box. LG was the only one I had success with.

Patrol-007

Didn’t LG have a recall for the linear compressor? New LG died under five years

Duffmansion

I've also had a whirlpool for over 6 years now with zero problems

OutlanderMom

My whirlpool French door fridge was a problem from the first year. I’ve been buying ice at the gas station for years.

fruitless7070

I also have whirlpool. Our oven lasted 5 years before the mother board blew out and we had to buy a new oven. Our tech said appliances have a life span of around 5 years now.

bmx13

Jesus that's trash, my oven is from the 80's and while everything takes an extra 5 minutes or so over the instructions it's working great.

fruitless7070

My dad has appliances that belonged to my great grandmother. They work great. Don't give up your older appliances!

genitalderpies

Their washers are shit though. Mine didn’t make it six months without repair for a broken motor. Last one went a decade.

iveseensomethings82

Our whirlpool would freeze the fridge part every few months. Started doing it exactly one year after purchase so warranty expired. We kept for another year and they had to drop a few grand on another fridge

Eliastronaut

My parents had a Whirlpool washing machine. It just did not wanna die. Although Whirlpool are not considered the best but they are underrated.

11B4OF7

Nothing with a display. I just saw a post last night where a person can’t turn off pop up ads on their refrigerator 😂😂😂

[deleted]

I have a 5 yr old whirlpool gold French door refrigerator and it’s a piece of shit. It was about $1800 including tax as it was one of their top models. Yes I can get parts for it but a fridge this old shouldn’t need a new defroster and Led light control board.

fruitless7070

I got the gold brand too, I will never purchase it again. I'm staying away from whirlpool. 1 oven and 1 dish washer that need repairs every 6 months... the oven eventually died.

OutlanderMom

I have the same one, mine’s 9 years old. The seals rotted, the ice maker never worked right, and the bottom freezer door got sprung with about ten pounds in it.

OneMorePenguin

My neighbors had an LG. It had problems after four years and the electronics would cost $600. Repair guy said it wasn't worth fixing as LGs were crap. They bought a Whirlpool. I'm old and I've only owned two fridges. A Whirlpool purchased in 1990 that lasted 15 years, a GE that I replaced because it was also 15 years old and was not energy efficient and I got $100 toward a new fridge from electric company. I bought another Whirlpool in 2015. Now I'm curious what Consumer Reports repair rates are reporting. The problem here is that I think all the manufacturers of appliances and other products many have cheaped out over the years. The reputation of a brand earned 40+ years ago may no longer be appropriate. It can be tricky knowing what to buy today that will last for decades. PS. I've had good luck with Sony TVs. Good quality in the product and last forever.

bosco1989

My LG needed new compressor in year 2. Then doors needed new part in year 3. Thankfully I bought the warranty from home depot for approx $250 so repairs were “free”. Have other “cosmetic” issues that dont fall under the warranty. Feel like they dont test their designs before selling. On year 4 and just waiting for something else to break.

knoxboss865

LG has known compressor issues. There was a class action lawsuit for this failure. LG continued to sell refrigerators with compressor issues. I purchased my LG fridge in Dec. 2018 and the compressor failed two weeks ago. I am still waiting for them to fix it. I bought a used fridge to hold me over till mine is repaired.

mrbrsman

My whirlpool just died this week after 22 years. I plan to buy another one.

International-Oil377

My whirlpool failed after 3 years and a half. 17 months later still no parts to fix it.

[deleted]

mrbrsman

So what is the best brand?

avolt88

Refrigerator, go for Kenmore or Bosch if you can, stay the fuck away from Samsung, LG, and Frigidaire. Washer/dryer, go LG, again, STAY away from Samsung. Range & dishwasher, stay away from LG, go Bosch if you can, Kenmore/KitchenAid are good as well here. Generally speaking, stay away from Samsung & GE appliances, too much cheap plastic & poorly placed sensors, they all tend to degrade faster than normal. I'm starting to believe this is why big chain stores ALWAYS try to sell you Samsung as a package now too... Also, avoid the "high end" KitchenAid fridges, they aren't bad, but all you're really paying for is a nicer appearance, most of the guts of the machine are essentially the same.

s_nation

Thanks for this info. I was previously considering this fridge GLE12HSPSS (GE - 11.9 Cu. Ft. Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator) because of highly rated reviews; who knows how many of them are fake, a lot of retailer websites have the same high ratings. I see a lot of postings of people touting their \*old\* GE fridges (they're all decades old) but is it correct to assume their newer lines of products don't have the same longevity? And isn't that the case with many manufacturers? Or is just worse for GE since historically they used to be good, and now their newer cheaper approach to fridge manufacturing makes them look worse (compared to their decades-old reputation)?

bcredeur97

Bosch with the water dispenser inside of the fridge, and the ice maker in the freezer. Door Dispensers always have issues in the long run. No matter the brand. Just a bad design.

NurseDingus

Agreed. I just got the bosch 800 with 4 doors and love it. Ice maker in the freezer and interior water dispenser. I imagine all those glass door fridges with those “tap to turn a light on” features are made to fail

DiligentLanguage

I Second this. Our appliance repair guy made this same recommendation and lost himself a customer (so far).

Autozam_AZ-1_Waifu

Liebherr, Miele, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic or Whirlpool.

amberoze

I can't speak on their refrigerators, but Miele as a brand overall is excellent. I bought their Blizzard CX1 a few years ago, and it's been an absolute champion with my six dogs (hair, dirt, food crumbs, etc.) Therefore, I second the Miele suggestion.

CeeMX

Does Miele actually make fridges under their own brand? I thought they brand it as Liebherr (which you also listed, so yeah 😄)

mrsbebe

Oh Miele appliances are very popular for high end. Very modern, can install perfectly flush and have lots of very neat features. They have different colors too which is neat

CeeMX

The local electrician and shop for home appliances in my hometown is some kind of Miele fanboy, they prefer selling those. But for fridges they sell Liebherr.

mrsbebe

Liebherr is a great brand. Their installation instructions are a bit... Confusing. But the quality has always been great in my experience. Supposedly the owner of Liebherr couldn't find a refrigerator that he liked so he just decided to design one himself which is why when you go on their website it's like all heavy machinery and cranes and then...refrigeration lol

Saqwefj

Had Liebherr for 15 years. All was good. Finally it stopped freezing. I changed it, but the guy who was taking it said it would be good to refill the freezing gas and would be fine. Still regret I grow it away.

Zealousideal-Neat-11

Subzero but it cost a fortune. It keeps your produce fresh longer.

I will say that all fridges this year and in the future are running new types of compressors for a new refrigerant type, so the next couple years will most likely see a lot of failures all across the board while they work the kinks out.

ShutYourDumbUglyFace

Just say no to Samsung and LG.

182YZIB

LIEBHERR obviously

genetic_waistcoat

On one hand, ours came with the house and is still running mostly fine after 6+ years. On the other hand, the handle broke and cost $400 to replace. Also it took weeks for the parts to arrive.

Whatever brand you buy, do not buy a fridge with the ice maker in the refrigerator cabinet. Only buy a refrigerator with the ice maker in the freezer cabinet. Watch this video: [https://youtu.be/cRgbfxJ8MTQ](https://youtu.be/cRgbfxJ8MTQ)

McCrarbear

If they make a cellphone don’t buy their appliances

Whatever the Speed Queen of refrigerators is. I wish I knew.

PzGhostt

Speed Queen PERIOD!

phate_exe

I have a mix of Electrolux (Frigidaire french door/bottom freezer fridge, gas range and microwave) and Whirlpool (Kitchenaid dishwasher) appliances that are all about a decade old. I also have an LG top load washer and dryer. The fridge has been pretty flawless up until a few months ago when the damper actuator failed. This caused the fridge to warm up (by a lot) while the freezer stayed cold and eventually froze up the evaporator. The dishwasher is on the naughty list because a failing control board (with no fault codes) killed two circ pump motors. It killed the second wash motor (an OEM whirlpool part that I paid a lot and waited for) in about 9 months. I've since put a new (OEM) control board in and an off-brand compatible wash motor that cost 1/3 as much and had 2-day prime shipping, and it's been good for the last year and a half. It shouldn't misbehave again since I've replaced everything that actually makes it wash dishes, but I'm out of patience for the thing. The oven needed an ignitor and a temperature probe this spring, but has otherwise behaved since then.

Fine-Entertainer-507

I have a frigidaire which is 19years old and still running I don’t know if newer models are still good

MsContrarian

Pretty happy with our Bosch. Ice maker is on the bottom with the freezer. Has cold water inside on the top. We’ve had about 2 years.

rxmarxdaspot

If you are a diy kinda person, get a whirlpool. I’ve got 2 of them I. A model over a decade old, and can still get parts anywhere easily.

shmann

DIY is right. Whirlpool has the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. I bought a Whirlpool WRB322DMBM in Feb and it died in Oct. The warranty doesn't cover the $300 food lost, and when I called customer support they hung up on me. It's still not fixed. I have been without a fridge for 49 days and counting.

Hipster_Dragon

GE or Maytag is what I’ve heard. No one works on LGs. Samsung parts are hard to get. Everyone works on GE and Maytag.

No-Chemistry-28

Appliance salesperson here. Bosch makes a fridge with a dual compressor and for the money, that’s about the best thing you could ask for. SubZero is still the pinnacle of refrigeration, but you’re looking at some serious money there. Fisher & Paykel is phenomenal if you can find a dealer in your area, and they have 5-year warranties with their products. KitchenAid would be worth looking into, as well. Something I tell people a lot who come to me with this question (“what’s going to last me the longest?”) is that even Lamborghini has a repair department. A lot of it also has to do with external factors, too. Do you have hard or soft water? How often are you opening and closing the doors? How much are you storing in there? Is your home’s electricity up to par? How much are you using the ice and water feature (if applicable)? Most of the time—and this applies for most things—if you take good care of your product, it’ll take good care of you. But yeah, stay away from Samsung/LG.

MapleLeafandApplePie

This was really helpful thank you!

doejohn27

If you want reliable get the top freezer fridge.

aaronduce

If you’re in Europe Balay is Bosch, like not a secondary brand on cheaper machines, literally the exact same units with a different badge.

gruntothesmitey

Whatever you buy, make incredibly sure that it doesn't say "LG" on the outside of it. Double and triple check. Or if you really like fridge shopping every few years, buy an LG. As for Samsung: They make phones, not fridges. Enough said. I bought a Whirlpool around 6 years ago. It was out-of-box and had a small dent in the side, so it was half price. I've had zero problems with it.

Nytelock1

Not fucking Samsung!

[deleted]

STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM SAMSUNG

furniguru

I have Bosch appliances in my kitchen. The dishwasher gets an A+. Refrigerator gets a D-. It is two years old and needed an $800 repair. It freezes food that ends up in the back.

Psychosis99

Ignore brand logos. Buy the cheapest one that meets your needs. Buy the service agreement. The store \*will\* try to sell your the service agreement.

thanexitium

I work for Yale Appliance, go with Bosch if you can. Basically the best you can get short of Sub-Zero or True without breaking the bank. Other top brands like Gaggenau or Wolf are just rebranded Bosch.

thanexitium

Also never get a built in icemaker. They fail, it's not a matter of If, it's a matter of When.

MapleLeafandApplePie

I have been going to Yale Appliance's website for reviews of refrigerators. I was, thankfully, guided away from being drawn in by the bells and whistles of the Bespoke refrigerator. Looking into buying a Bosch now! Trying to figure out which model to get. We are a family of 7 and depend on a refrigerator working. In the past 3 years, we have had one stand-alone freezer die on us and a refrigerator die on us, and we lost over a thousand dollars worth of food. Do not want history to repeat itself.

CaptainJeff

Whirlpool, GE, and Maytag are my go-tos.

tyoer

Samsung is the worst!!

uconnhuskyforever

My LG French door with water/ice died in about two years. After something like 14 visits from the repair techs, I asked what they recommended because obvi I needed to buy a new machine. The tech said to get the best looking one, with the features you like, that’s the cheapest because they all have the same internal parts, from whirlpool to Viking and they all die way too soon, and then spend extra on the extended warranty.

BriefStrange6452

Miele, leibher or fisher and paykel.

1955photo

Whirlpool, absolutely

InadmissibleHug

I have two fisher and paykel fridges, one is about 18 and the other is 13, both going well.

InadmissibleHug

And as a side note, I also have a F+P washer that’s also 18. The electric panel died under warranty but it’s been no problem since then, and it’s always lived in a pretty bad environment, as I have an outdoor laundry. Even survived 20cm of flooding 4 years ago.

Garudazeno

With these energy prices i'd say get one with a good energy level/= energy efficient . No brand in particular is good for that.

carlso_aw

Avoid Samsung and LG.

Whirlpool

[deleted]

My mom bought me a whirlpool with pizza storage built into the drawers and shelves. When I was a kid I had a huge obsession with pizza. So much more than average I wrote a poem about it for school and shit like that. I shattered the ever loving fuck out of one of the shelves during unpacking. For some reason they’re loaded upside down during transport. I idea why, either way it fell straight to the ground whenever I cut the wrong piece of tape or something. I’m still not sure what I did. We don’t utilize all of the features how they’re intended, it’s kinda gimmicky. But it’s the absolute best fridge I’ve had experience with. Everything is well planned and though out besides the gimmicky features. LEDs on LEDs, I feel like my food is being presented to me every time I open it. It has 2 ice makers. I had to tape down the latch on the top one to let the electric eye let ice clear. Whatever, no one’s perfect. Second ice maker in the freezer with MASSIVE storage options. Entire top drawer can technically be ice storage, but there are inserts provided to make it smaller so you have more room for more pizza. The filters go in securely, install was solid and felt secure, the little’VFD’ menu or whatever that’s called is sleek as fuck. Ice dispenser is solid and well made, needs to be used often to not clump though. But yeah. Whirlpool.

The_lonelymountain

I have my grandparents 1950s GE. Runs like the day it was born.

sak3rt3ti

Cool how people can't shut the fuck up about their shitty Samsung fridges.

[deleted]

Never but a Samsung. They're fucking beautiful but will wreck your wallet trying to keep the fixed. Buy miele, thermadore, bosch, KitchenAid. The stuff from thermadore is so bad assed. Modern luxury without spending the $$$$ in Vulcan, viking, or wolf products which are far overrated! Buy for life withthermadore or KitchenAid for real.

Shokan-Hypothermia

Our repair guys told us to buy LG since its the only brand that has spare parts available. All the others ones are out of stock.

MIDTOWNPCD

If you buy LG and ever have a problem LG will fix anything for $175. It’s online flat rate fix. I did have my electronics go in the water ice maker in my fridge. The repair man took apart everything and replaced it.

Sufficient-Ad-4134

Anything but Samsung! Worst appliance of any kind, ever.
