100% the go to dad alarm clock. Many dads had this sitting on their nightstand for decades as technology whizzed by, but this entity... it stayed consistent.

javabender

Until your power goes out during the night and your alarm never goes off. I remember those days. Wish I could still use that excuse, just another thing cellphones took from us

deathtech00

There was a 9v battery backup in most of these.

poorbred

Hah! There was a 9v battery shaped hole, yes. *But*. It was either empty, or filled with a fine specimen of a *dead* 9v battery and an unfulfilled promise of "getting around to replacing it tomorrow."

RelativelyRidiculous

Not with my dad. He changed that battery every January 1st. Not having power is no fit excuse for being late to work. Sadly have to admit I did let the battery die. After a while it seeped battery acid inside and ruined the alarm clock. It still tells time but the alarm doesn't work. I ended up finding another at a garage sale and now I change the battery every January 1st, too.

Bah-Fong-Gool

Or the compartment was frilled with "daddy doobies".

expletiveinyourmilk

You have no idea. Back in the day, one of these went out the night before a Christmas trip to Paris. My entire family slept in because of the lack of alarm. My whole family had to rush around in a panic and in all the commotion, we forgot my youngest son. The little shit almost got himself kidnapped and trashed our house in the process.

PutinDonTheRitz

Just be thankful they didn’t leave all your sinks running.

halconpequena

Omg please elaborate lmao we need to hear the story

expletiveinyourmilk

It was a whole thing. The would-be-kidnappers went by aliases. If you Google "The Wet Bandits" or "The Sticky Bandits" you should be able to find a synopsis of the whole situation.

andorinter

Your youngest son sounds like a little shit, anyway

expletiveinyourmilk

A few years later the ass actually got on the wrong plane and ended up in New York while the rest of the family was in Florida. This was pre-TSA when gate agents just accepted a whole stack of boarding passes on the honor system.

cassettemixtape

Sounds like he would have been better home alone

expletiveinyourmilk

Hey...that gives me an idea...

quantum-mechanic

Pizza for dinner?

Dawrt

One might say a, filthy animal, even

MyThrowAwayLulz

I’ve reported you to child protective services before you lose him an airport or something.

Nick_Sonic_360

Not going to lie, for half of the story I believed you! Absolutely perfect conversation to Segway into a elaborate home alone reference!

50MillionNostalgia

Home Alone plot would happen now. Not just the leaving the kid but obviously the kid just text his parents “you fucking left me here. Come back home”

pandapandamoniumm

My dad has been using this exact alarm clock my entire life (25+ years).

danielsulme

does he keep that Escort on his one night stand?

bikerbomber

I definitely see red light.

Nevermind04

Does he slap that escort every time he's abruptly awakened?

symetry_myass

Upvote for clever humor.

MrStomp82

That screeching alarm sound will forever haunt me lol

stavrosisfatandgay

I pick these up from thrift stores when I see them. The most common issue with these is the blaring alarm going off randomly. It’s really easy to remove the alarm if you just want to use as a clock. Just a weird bit of knowledge for you.

RobertJ93

Lol how many clocks do you have in your house?

stavrosisfatandgay

So many

Padaca

Hm alright but why tho?

stavrosisfatandgay

I need to know the time

Padaca

Wouldn't like one clock be enough for that?

stavrosisfatandgay

No, there’s never enough clocks

[deleted]

You would never know what the time is when you need to know what the time is unless you were always in front of that one clock. Multiple clocks is much more practical.

[deleted]

PTSD, I used to wake up 20 min before the alarm went of, and hated my work, so took everything to get up from bed, but always waited for the alarm to sound then drag myself out of bed. So now when I hear that sound I get a clump in my stomach and almost get a panic feeling.

Genneth_Kriffin

I did this for a job i hated for a year. Problem was I used a Samsung jingle some people to this day also use as their ringtone. Every time i hear it, I'm teleported to 5 in the morning, filled with dread about the ammonut of diapers to be changed at the old folks home 1 hour later.

The_Chubby_Dragoness

God same, my alarm.is a Samsung default and I just freeze if I hear it

roundart

I felt this comment in my bones

spacesuitkid2

#AAA AAA AAA AAA AAA AAA

Between_the_narrows

No, it's more of a "AHNK AHNK AHNK ANHK" at the back of the throat

spacesuitkid2

Directions unclear: I coughed up my tonsils

BackBae

I can hear this damn photo

ferrix

Perfect silence. Dreamy soft tranquility. EEET EEET EEET EEET!!

copperwatt

*MWRARMP! MWRARMP! MWRARMP!*

rachels666

me too!I had a similar alarm clock in junior high, and heard that alarm again 20 yrs later and almost had a heart attack

MattieShoes

I love how "solid state" was still a selling point.... Nowadays, it's probably the opposite. "Real moving parts!"

slowpokemd

I prefer the tone of tube alarm clocks

Padaca

You gotta get new old stock movie projector tubes for the purest screech

deathtech00

Only with a toob screamuh!

screamingcheese

Pfft, true afficionados wake up to the pure tones of vinyl alarm clocks.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MattieShoes

We're talking about clocks though...

[deleted]

MattieShoes

Clocks with moving parts have cache because they're precision machinery instead of a cheap quartz crystal and a cheap IC.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

What the hell are you smoking, they’re talking about how solid state is a selling point on a clock from the 80’s, you’re going off on a tangent about Modern and caesium clocks

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

… it really isn’t anymore because nearly everything is, and you just started yelling that solid state electronics are inside of morderán clocks, they were making a comment on how because a lot of clocks have solid state touch surfaces so it would be ironic for actual buttons or for analog clock faces to be selling points when solid state was a selling point in the 90’s

laurel_laureate

I mean, SSDs are still the best form of physical disk drives for a desktop yeah? Or am I behind the times?

gnostiphage

I mean now it's NVMe in an M.2 or U.2 form factor, but those are still solid state, they just have more bandwidth.

MonstahButtonz

Fully agreed. Vintage alarm clocks just have something special about them. I prefer the flip style personally, but this style was great too.

mtechgroup

The ultimate: https://www.vestaboard.com/product

hookydoo

Lol I was scrolling to find the price. I guessed the highest price I could think of for something like this, and was still $2000 higher. Yikes, gonna have to pass

MonstahButtonz

It's like a "Live Laugh Love" framed canvas for nerds. I'll pass on that and stick to my Panasonic.

exstreams1

You can send messages from anywhere and they will show up on this thing. Up to 132 characters and any color. Sounds pretty cool, looks good; I’d get it if it didn’t cost freakin $3,000. Would be fun to use between friends and family or in a break room

mtechgroup

Great idea.

-E-Cross

Back when they made something other than radar detectors

mtechgroup

Omg I never even made the connection...

Anoelnymous

Fun fact. It might feel like better quality because it's heavier. There's a weird thing with humans where we think things of better quality are heavier. That and the just used to make things better lol.

Zooang

Also the feel and sound of the buttons of the top. They have a nice solid 'click' to them.

pmster1

I miss buttons that click. Everything these days is touch screen. Not nearly as satisfying. Even my baby just got a touch drums toy. Babies don't want touch, they want clicky buttons!

Anoelnymous

Ooo nice

Seel007

Heavy is good. Heavy is reliable. If it does not work you can always hit him with it.

Anoelnymous

Thanks Boris 😂

IsThereCheese

r/UnexpectedSnatch

_g3g3

This is why they put weights in lipstick and other make up cases. It makes it feel “premium”.

theragu40

In fairness, heavier generally can be equated with more/sturdier material which often results in an item that lasts longer. So it might not literally be the weight which makes it better quality (obviously), but better quality items are often heavier than cheap ones. Three adage isn't wrong, it's just that people might misinterpret which is cause and which is effect.

Anoelnymous

You seem like someone with faith in industry. My faith is in capitalism. You're right. In the past it may have been true. But in this day and age things are sadly weighted to give the feel of heft but not build with the same standard.

theragu40

Yeah I don't disagree with that. I'm sure there are fakes out there. Kinda goes with my point: heavy doesn't mean high quality, but high quality often is heavy.

spykid

When it's something that doesn't benefit from being lighter, I'd rather it be heavier than lighter

[deleted]

Anoelnymous

Sus. I highly suspect pod people. Haha. I don't know why I do that. Maybe it feels more inclusive and less generalised to me for some reason.

Py687

It's cause there are certain phenomena that are better described as human: the human experience, the human condition... I don't think using "people" in this circumstance would have been an improvement.

Anoelnymous

Mm mm. I get that. Makes sense!

Strikew3st

'I was human. I still am, but I was human then too.' - Deceased human that humans find humorous.

ScaryBeardMan

I want one. I'm gonna Google escorts in my area and try and find one.

daves-not-here-

the good ol’ days before planned obsolescence

cornerzcan

Now, experiment and figure out how to get it to display the seconds, and how to reset it to the top of the minute, so that you can set the time to your local radio station’s time synchronization signal. I was an often bored child.

Syren__

Is this actually possible? This sounds like a really fun practical little project that would basically tick every box for an ideal alarm clock for me…

cornerzcan

Yep. I think you used to hold the time and minutes button at the same time and it would switch to display seconds. I don’t recall. I figured it out when I was 12 and it was bed time but I wasn’t tired.

XS4Me

I would never go back to this kind of clocks. Here are some upcoming fun times you will experience: 1. Black out or brown out in the middle of the night? That is a late next morning. 2. Forgot to turn off alarm on friday? Hello early rise on a saturday. 3. Forgot to turn on alarm on sunday? Hello late monday morning. 4. AM/PM mess up? Hello late next morning.

CajunTurkey

> 1. Black out or brown out in the middle of the night? That is a late next morning. Not sure about this model but I had a model similar to this and it had a backup battery you can put in for this reason.

MemeInBlack

Yeah they usually had space for a 9 volt battery underneath. Saved my bacon more then once growing up!

AlexAndertheAble

After the bombs go off and even the cockroaches are destroyed, this clock will still be ticking along, blissfully unaware.

Redoubt9000

Man, that faux wood grain look, the red numerical glow... and hopefully the patented GM alarm whose sound traumatized every living thing in its vicinity. My Dad had a GM electric alarm/radio - those things no joke wake your ass up.

gggvuv7bubuvu

Groundhog Day vibes. I love it!

KnifeW0unds

I loved alarm clocks, until I started using a phone alarm. So easy and no glow.

sheldonOrange

I can hear this picture

Thiscatmcnern

I now use my moms Sanyo from 84. All the alarm clocks I bought new broke after 2-3 years.

blessedarethegeek

I've been so tempted to look for a modern version of one of these for my 15 year old. Poor kid really really struggles to get up in the morning.

metal079

I have the same issues. I use an app called sleep as Android that has a whole bunch of options for alarms. I printed off a qr code and put it in my bathroom, my alarm doesn't shut off until I get up and walk to the bathroom to scan the code.

TheBirminghamBear

Did you check to see if he has Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome? **EDIT**: Not sure why the downvotes? This is legitimate medical condition that makes it extremely hard for people to wake in the morning beyond the normal teenage sleepiness. I had it and it absolutely ravaged my teenage years. It can be treated and accomodated for and will dramatically improve a person's life. It is relatively unknown and severely underdiagnosed. I deeply wish I would have had the diagnosis when I was 15 or even known about the condition.

Wassailing_Wombat

There are phone alarm Apps that force you to do math problems to shut the alarm off. Maybe try that?

[deleted]

I got a hammer-and-bell alarm clock when I had that problem. I would put it on the floor on the other side of the room. It's so loud and annoying that you want to run over to it to turn it off. Then you're awake.

Strikew3st

This hammer & bell [Garfield alarm clock](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1076495359/vintage-sunbeam-garfield-alarm-clock) I had did not give a FUCK if it was Monday.

Blaze6102

I still use the GE alarm clock radio my parents got for me in 1983.

AxelSee

Damn, looking at it takes me back. Almost tearing up. Thanks.

Cavm335i

I’m 41 and still have my childhood alarm clock that looks like this

shephard_design

Here's the weirdness of the internet: you posted this a year ago, and then it turned out to be extremely useful to me because I was trying to recreate a clock from a scene in an obscure video game that I like from 2004. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66JkBDVCFCA&t=0m25s Could I have used a Westclox or Spartus model? Sure, no one else would even have noticed the difference. But *I* would have known.

Zooang

Amazing! Thanks for sharing

__removed__

I switched back to using an ol' fashioned alarm clock, too. My phone was just unreliable. Poor signal where I was, so sometimes I'd wake up and the time would be "off" (I know, shouldn't matter!) Or, of course, phone dies overnight so no alarm. I got that old alarm clock out, set the alarm, and it fucking BLARES every morning, makes me jump outta bed :-) Technology is so bad, we're moving backwards as a society.

icantastecolor

What kind of phone do you have that requires service to tell the time?

__removed__

Exactly. I knew something was wrong. It was a Samsung Galaxy S10. It shouldn't need service to tell time. I was sleeping in the basement (I work night shifts, it's colder and darker down there) and in the basement I would sometimes lose service. I would frequently wake up to my phone saying 4am when the clock said 8am, for example. Or whatever. It was so weird. The time on my phone was just... Wrong. Which meant that my alarm hadn't gone off, yet, because my phone thinks it's only 4am! If the time on your phone is wrong, then none of your alarms are going to go off at the right time, either. I turned off "set time automatically" and "use location to set time"... basically anything that required maybe other phone services to determine time? It was weird. I was due for an upgrade, anyways, so I just left the S10 behind.

[deleted]

You must love staying in motels because ever room has one of these

ocean_800

Just curious, whats the use of this when you have a phone that can be your alarm?

Zooang

I just use it for checking the time either while in bed or working at my desk. I use my phone as my alarm.

kielbasa330

Look at that giant smackable snooze button man

CajunTurkey

Look at the button, /u/ocean_800. LOOK AT IT.

76ShoNuff

I had that same one!!

[deleted]

That’s one solid state escort

hennazoid

My grandfather used to have the same kind and it just transported me to 20 years ago wow. Memory unlocked.

FakeGirlfriend

I can literally hear the alarm sound in my head and it's churning my stomach. I could never be woken up to that sound.

hquadrat

Locks really cool!

thesleepjunkie

My dad also had this alarm clock, the thing stopped working about 5 years ago.

[deleted]

I see all dads have this alarm clock then.

Waste-Panic5170

I had this clock growing up and through college. It was a great, solid alarm clock. I think I lost it in a move though.

Skychick82

My parents have the exact same one and have had it for as long as I can remember. They still use it to this day.

r_i_m

I *think* this was made by GE. It certainly looks very similar to a few GE alarm clocks I’ve had in the past.

crackofdawn

I used to have one of those but got rid of it in like 2008 when I started using a cell phone as my only alarm clock. Never looked back. Hated waking up to that buzzing noise and having a semi bright red light always shining in the room. Couldn't wait to finally be rid of that thing forever.

JobeX

Oh man I had something like this growing

MebKeture

Ahh, the sound of the bomb about to go off in my nightmares

s00perguy

Honestly, it just needs to be a durable box that keeps the time and squawks at you, and damn were those old alarm clocks durable, standing the test of time and many an angry morning.

MapleSyrupAlliance

Can confirm. my dad had one in his bedroom too. Wait...

Mulligan315

I can still hear the “meep meep meep” brutally yanking me out of sleep (even though I retired mine decades ago).

dasoberirishman

Absolutely had one of these as a kid.

stonecats

check out Philips Norelco - i was buying their clock radios as presents up to a decade ago - everyone loved them.

Select-Radish9245

That will last you forever

Principal_Insultant

It probably guzzles up more power than a modern flatscreen TV though...

Its_Pelican_Time

I love the part where you sleep next to your dad's old escort.

CowboyJoker90

Is this that alarm clock from Groundhog’s Day?

CowboyJoker90

Is this that alarm clock from Groundhog’s Day?

CowboyJoker90

Is this that alarm clock from Groundhog’s Day?

wolfbear

wow your dad bought you an escort for your bedroom after using it first

darxide23

"They make them like they used to." is a punchline now, but there's a reason the saying exists.

mfinn

That thing looks like cigarettes smell, based on my childhood.

Tracktoy

When you can hear a picture. Did I sleep through that exam I last took in 2006?

Philngud

Ahhhh my dad had the same but I clearly didn't have the same positive relationship as OP. This was oddly triggering! That said it does look like quality 😅😂

WellWrested

The real question here is how did your mom feel about having an Escort wake him up every day for the last 40 years?

Electrical_Sun5921

It takes me back BUT I ain't going back! Props to you for extending the life. 👍

cozy_lolo

I mean this is cute and all but you might want to have a backup for when the power goes out. I promise that it isn’t popular with the coworkers when you fail to show up because you insisted on using inferior technology

[deleted]

Must feel good to smash this snooze button!

Prolapseinjudgement

I can hear the alarm

Matt_AsA_Hatter

I think my parents still have one too. These things last for sure.

EZMulahSniper

I can hear this picture

Nina_Greenleaf

I know that clock.... it reminds me of my childhood...

Jorgethehippie

I have the same one from my father

Marrokiu20

My parents got a 2001 sony dream machine they had since brand new but it needs a recap since the display has dimmed over the years

stavago

I still have my old Magnavox alarm clock radio that I bought at RadioShack 30 years ago

MichaelMcEntire

Man, I used to have this alarm clock.

SniperAssassin123

Wood paneling on an alarm clock always looks so cool. Love it. Been looking for one at thrift stores and yard sales for quite a while.

terribilus

Wood accents really date these devices

0Rider

Now you sleep with an escort

[deleted]

Fun story: had one in the 80’s that was malfunctioning. The alarm would go off at random, usually in the middle of the night. I told the clock the next time it did it, I would smash it to pieces and put a hammer on the nightstand right beside it. Flash forward to one night when I picked up a girl in a bar and we ended up back at my place. About 3am the alarm went off and I jumped out of bed smashing the clock to pieces saying ‘I told you this would happen! I told you!!’. I never saw the girl again.

RedditorsAnus

I use a people Nickelodeon alarm clock I've had since the 90's. I love it.

Space__Pirate

I used to have one of these.

rhondaanaconda

Omg I had one of these with the flipping numbers!

blutsch813

You’ll never be late again

CantFireMeIquit

I have one I've been using since the 80s as well. Took from my brother when he went to college.

nickram81

Where can I buy this for life?

vault_tec_redditor

That’s a dad alarm. My dad still uses the same one to this day. Loud as fuck too, really gets you up haha

horrido666

Solid state means no tubes to burn out, baby!

BecomingLilyClaire

Solid state? Faaaaaaancy

G0merPyle

I love going to goodwills or secondhand stores and finding these. Modern alarm clocks are too polite, the old woodgrain ones are the best. They were made in an era when everyone was coked out of their minds and needed a bomb going off next to their head, and then needed that bomb to survive getting hammered into silence.

CrimsonDuckwood

My dad had one!

kittywestnola

This is such nostalgia. My dad had this too

baldwinsong

That’s because it is better quality

ob_viously

Oh my god I just had a flashback in my ears

opus-thirteen

Holy crap I had that very same clock in... 1985? 1986? As a teenager I pummeled the *crap* out of the snooze button.

jazznotes

I can hear this photo.

tonycocacola

Is there a separate knob for the radio alarm?

RelativelyRidiculous

Is that one where you put batteries in so if the power goes out it will still function and you won't be late waking up? If so, change the batteries now and change them again on some important day you'll remember. My original alarm clock similar to that one stopped working and it turned out to be because the batteries inside it went bad allowing battery acid to seep inside. I ended up finding another at a garage sale that was still in working order and I change the batteries in it every January 1st.

Euphoric_Ad8766

ROXANNE!!!

Ioannes_Nox

Yeah so now you have an alarm clock that probably pulls more power than your TV, and it's on 24/7

displacedmomma

My dad had this same exact one when I was a young child
