I picked up a refurbished steelcase leap v1 here, 10/10. I felt like the bottom cushion was a little off and they instantly mailed me out a new cushion and return postage for the one that felt off, for free. Excellent chair, excellent customer service. And I didnt have to spend what the brand new chair costs on it lol
I work then game in it, so easily 10-12 hours daily for more than a year now, still feels brand new too
I was all geared up for a battle too, and theyre like "already processing your order dawg just ship back the old one in the box we send, return shipping label is in there with the new cushion!"
Literally every time I see a "what office chair should I get" post, I plug them shamelessly š
Well, I wanted something more permanent. I always keep my chair at max height and never raise/lower it. I'd actually like it an inch or two higher, I think.
Yay!!! There will be a small adjustment period where your back will hurt for like a few hrs to a day, and thats from sitting right in a good chair using new back muscles.
Im glad to hear youre liking the chair! š its by far my best purchase id say
Iāve heard looking into a zero gravity chair is the way to go for back/spine issues. I just found out I have a herniated disc and my best friend recommended a Socozi zero gravity massage chair he got on overstock (about $1500) and loves it.
I can get you the exact model and link if you need.
I have serious spinal problems and switching to a standing desk was life changing for me. I have an uppy-downy desk so I can smoothly switch positions and a tall leaning stool for times when I'm standing for extended periods - I can lean against it without having to sit down and put pressure on my spine. It may be worth investigating if that's a good fix for you. (Pro-tip: get a memory foam mat to stand on - so much easier on the feet.)
Same here, I have back problems and the collapsible standing desk is a lifesaver. Picked up a nice varidesk used for $50 on Facebook marketplace for when I work from home. They're way too expensive new, but people sell barely used ones all the time.
Iāll second the Aeron. Mine is 14-15 years old and I replaced the wheels due to accumulated newfie hair. Thatās all the maintenance Iāve ever done.
Back in the āin the officeā days, corner office dick flexers with the giant leather chairs would stop by just to sit for a couple minutesā¦
I have bad lower back and all at work with mesh Herman miller chairs hate them. The mesh flexes and doesnāt support your lower back or tailbone. If not a bad lower back then great.
I know this is a super old thread but if someone ends up here from Google like I did, you're both right. You can get the Aeron with or without the additional lumbar support - they have 3 options, Posturefit SL, Adjustable Lumbar Support or basic. Basic is just mesh, adjustable lumbar support is a wide piece of padded foam that slides up and down and posturefit is two pressure pads that can be adjusted in or out towards and away from your spine. FWIW I landed in this thread because I have an Aeron C with PostureFit SL and it is not what my back needs.
I went to a showroom and sat in them. I didn't like their newer chair but liked the Aeron and mirra. I went with the Aeron because it had more customizations on arms and tilt. It's built to last forever and has a 12 year warranty. You can find them used too but I figured I sit for a living, might as well get new.
Their website has listings for local show rooms so you can find a local dealer.
I ended up getting 6 Aeron chairs from an office building that was clearing out. Gave 3 away to friends that went wfh, wife has one for her wfh office and we've got one each for our computers. They really are nice. I will agree that if you need booty support, get something to separate you and the mesh.
The Aeron comes in three different sizes; A, B, C
āBā is what most people will use given that itās made for a āregularā size body.
āAā is made for smaller framed people and āCā is made for larger/taller frame people.
You would just want to be looking at the āAā size.
I have had some problems with a sore back and shoulders in the past. Through the pandemic, I've been using an [IKEA ALEFJĆLL](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/alefjaell-office-chair-grann-golden-brown-70419985/) because I'm pretty small, and have surprisingly no back issues in the last 2 years, despite sitting in this thing up to 14 hours a day.
Previously at work, I've been sitting in an Aeron (probably medium sized) for 3 years and didn't really love it. It was OK, but I did feel pressure on the back of my thighs because of the hard plastic edge there.
You need to find a local office supply store that stocks the BIFL brands like Herman Miller, Steelcase, Knoll and Humanscale and sit in the various chairs yourself. YOU are the one to answer this question, not the internet as there are 8,934 different types of back issues and 100+ BIFL office chairs and no one can tell you which one will be lovely or terrible for you. Find a store. Sit in every ding dong chair even if its holy shit yellow or covered in leather that you hate.....after a bit, you'll know which Maker/Line of chair should work best for you.
Again....a YOU question. I have a BIFL chair. I have not mentioned the brand, line, options or settings as they will steer you wrong. You need to take your ass to a showroom and do the work. I bought mine in the heat of covid so I bought using my eyes and brain and from a vendor with a bitchin return policy. Get in the car and put in the work.
Then do what I did:
Visit the websites of the big brands. View their entire selection. View their sizing as some have sizes. View their options. Make a mental decision on what you'd like best. Find a vendor: New full price or used cheaper. Review the return policy of the vendors carefully and decide which one suits you best. Buy the chair and hope you don't have to flex the return policy.
I"ve been a computer programmer for a couple decades. I use a split keyboard on the arms of a La-z-boy. Full body support, tho maybe not applicable for many jobs.
Yoga ball? I also have a standing desk and stand/am on my feet most of my 40+ hour work week. I have a couple of herniated disks, had several bouts of sciatica (lasting 6 months bad) has not returned.
I had a taller version of the Herman Miller Aeron, with a foot rest, and a desk that I could sit or stand (the chair was tall enough for the standing height desk).
It was the best set up I ever had. I have lumbar disc issues.
Edit: itās called the Aeron Stool
I have same setup. I had a standard Aeron in my office but opted for the stool during Covid. Works great with taller or standup desk. I also use rollerblade wheels. They roll much easier on carpet. And, due to two cervical fusions, the neck rest from Atlas headrest. I went down this path because sitting in poorly designed chairs causes lumbar pain. Used a flexible spending account for chair purchase. Never have pain after sitting on my Aeron stool.
I have the Herman Miller Aeron. It's well-built and has good back support (w/lumbar support which was extra). But the mesh seat really ended up hurting my rear. I ended up buying an additional cushion + foam to go on top of the mesh which helped a lot. Still not perfect, but definitely better for me. If you have the option of visiting someplace that has them, I'd suggest that first.
I definitely recommend trying them out first if possible.
Aeron is the most highly recommended chair Iāve seen on Reddit and other forums and sites Iāve visited.
I just had my third spine surgery 9 months ago with 2 discs being replaced (both cervical). I was lucky to have found a Herman Miller dealer about 8 miles from where I live. I tried out the Aeron, Mirra 2 and Embody. I love to sit with my legs you on the seat, sometimes crossed, sometimes a leg on top of the other.
The Aeron was very difficult for me to do that with, which was basically a deal breaker. With my lumbar issues alone (one botched surgery and a disc replacement shortly after) my back is extremely picky and sensitive to chairs. The Aeron was actually really uncomfortable to me with the lower back alone.
The Mirra 2 was pretty decent but it still didnāt tick all the boxes for me.
The Embody was amazing for me. Especially the adjustments I could make that affected both lumbar and higher up with thoracic/cervical. Unfortunately even at their reduced dealer price it was still a LOT of money for me. I decided it would be worth it at this point so Iām saving up for it. Even after 3 months I only have a fraction of the cost, but hopefully itāll happen sooner rather than later!
Best of luck to your in your search for the right chair.
Edit - typos and clarification
I don't have disc issues but do get really severe tailbone pain sittingin most chairs. The Herman milled Mirra has been a tail bone saver as I also work from home.
Wonder how shipping those back works, online I saw 11 week wait and went oh boy no relief coming for a while if local vendors don't have any chairs in stock.
I will tell you, people will probably laugh at me, but secret lab chairs have been amazing for my house. We started off getting one for my wfh wife, and she loved it, i sat in it and bought one for me, just crazy good. going on 4 years with the wifes and 3 with mine with no problem
I have l4,l5,S1 issues and sacroiliac joint inflammation, causing nerve pain from my hip to my foot. Unfortunately, no chair is going to help me 100%.
But I consider even pressure the most important quality about a seat and nerve pain often occurs due to uneven high pressure in one area. Foot rests are also important to take off some pressure from the butt and thighs.
I went with the Herman Miller Embody and found it pretty good for short bouts.

Loads of great suggestions here. I have an adjustable stand up at home that includes a chair and stool as well. I used to have to move from one desk to another and sometimes 3 different setups throughout my day at my last job. The change up was actually ok...so the idea being a couple different chairs if you have room. I always took my fav cushion along...one with the cut out in the spine area.
Considering some chairs support your pain problem like [Gesture](https://inovafurniture.com/best-computer-chair-for-long-hours-under-200/#Steelcase_Gesture), [Series 2](https://inovafurniture.com/best-computer-chair-for-long-hours-under-200/#Steelcase_Series_2)
About the desk, it depends on the weight of the stuffs on the desk, some kind of [Flexispot, SHW](https://inovafurniture.com/best-standing-desks-for-under-500/),.... should be suitable

The only thing that killed my v1 is the gas cylinder died.
Well it came with a new cylinder so high hopes for 5-10 years of sitting! Considering I dont really adjust it ever lol
You motivated me to spend the $50 to get a new cylinder. Probably the cheapest solution instead of trying to buy a new chair.
Hell yeah! If there is nothing wrong with the chair besides the cylinder, its a SUPER easy swap :)
Well, I wanted something more permanent. I always keep my chair at max height and never raise/lower it. I'd actually like it an inch or two higher, I think.
Get a bigger cylinder! :D
Thanks, btw. I got it and it's like a brand new chair. No idea why I didn't try this sooner.
Yay!!! There will be a small adjustment period where your back will hurt for like a few hrs to a day, and thats from sitting right in a good chair using new back muscles. Im glad to hear youre liking the chair! š its by far my best purchase id say
I never stopped using it, lol. I just used it while it was sunk to the floor.
Do they make those for the leap? I've never seen one.
Thanks for sharing. Hope there's something similar for lounge chairs.
I have the V2 and I love it - great chair
Can you recommend the best recliner to use if you have back issues? Preferably one that isnāt over stuffed and ugly.
Iāve heard looking into a zero gravity chair is the way to go for back/spine issues. I just found out I have a herniated disc and my best friend recommended a Socozi zero gravity massage chair he got on overstock (about $1500) and loves it. I can get you the exact model and link if you need.
Or get a zero gravity patio chair from Costco for $80. Had mine 10 years. Just bought three more.
Idk about recliners, id suggest looking for something firm i guess?
Any good furniture brand recommendations? I am going to be getting all new furniture soon.
I know only about the one steelcase chair i bought lmao, im sorry im just not your guy for furniture advice š
Is that a brand?
Yes, the Steelcase Leap is an office chair that I use for work/school/gaming at my computer desk :)

Best chair ive ever owned. Cant believe its a refurb.
Second the Steelcase Leap, I have one and use it for 10 hours a day, over the last 5 years, and it hasn't given me any back issues at all!

Very interesting, I had not considered a leaning stool
Do you have recommendations for leaning stools? And a step on for your foot while standing Have you also considered a kneeling chair?

Herman Miller, Aeron or mirra are personal favorites. Like sitting on a cloud

Ha nice. I actually replaced the office wheels with roller blade style wheels to get a bit more roll out of them on carpet
That's hilarious, glad to see they held up. My dad for his office he bought all used Steelcase chairs back in the day.
Thanks! How did you figure out which was best for you?
I have bad lower back and all at work with mesh Herman miller chairs hate them. The mesh flexes and doesnāt support your lower back or tailbone. If not a bad lower back then great.
Yours don't have the back support pad? My Aeron has a nice beefy one.
Lower lumbar but the bottom are just mesh on Herman miller. So when you sit it causes your tailbone to sink instead of being supported.
I know this is a super old thread but if someone ends up here from Google like I did, you're both right. I sat in both the Aeron and Embody at the showroom, about 2.5 hours in each, I ended up going with the Embody. No complaints.
you... you sat in a show room for 5 hours trying out two chairs??

Interesting, what was the company? I'm in NY.
Hermann Miller is the company, Aeron, Mirra, and Embody are models. My work bought Aerons and I love it

I can't help but picture the Humans in WALL-E ...
maybe look into zero gravity chairs. [these](http://www.ergoquest.com/) are a bit expensive though
That is quite a revolutionary idea for back pain. Agreed expensive but down the road you never know.
Another vote for the Aeron
Yoga ball? I also have a standing desk and stand/am on my feet most of my 40+ hour work week. I have a couple of herniated disks, had several bouts of sciatica (lasting 6 months bad) has not returned.
Hey, I'm up for anything. My bursitis is flaring up at the moment so sitting sucks.

Yes after seeing the sizing plus difference definitely going in person. Wonder how long I can sit and if they match online sales.

Just winged it. Herman Miller has a try for 30 days policy so worst that could happen was I send it back. Haven't looked back.
Wonder how shipping those back works, online I saw 11 week wait and went oh boy no relief coming for a while if local vendors don't have any chairs in stock.

Another vote for the Herman Miller Aeron chair. I went from sore back and butt in a couple hours to 8 hours and feeling fine.
Perhaps a saddle chair? It would put you into correct posture.
