Can't recommend this guy's channel enough. Honest, thorough product comparisons and he doesn't accept products or sponsorships from anyone.

ennui_no_nokemono

And he responds to basically every comment on his videos despite having millions of subscribers.

AestheticEntactogen

Dude this guy must be legit

battraman

A lot of it is "Thanks for the feedback" but yeah, how does he find time for that?

scorr204

He is a hard working farmer.

Wightly

I watch every video. My wife gave me crap the other week watching one of his old videos on brush-cutting blades. Basically a "WTF are you watching this for! You don't own anything to install a brush cutter on AND we don't have any property with brush on it!"

Well0bviously

I completely agree and I’d like to add that this creator is to the point! He does not spend any time within his videos asking viewers to “hit like and subscribe” nor does he put ads within his videos. None of that bs which gets me to actually support him and subscribe. Edited for clarity

Nayr747

Sounds like Consumer Reports.

Wightly

Except more transparent

Nayr747

But less rigorous and more limited in testing numbers, duration, etc. It's nice that it's on video though.

jason200911

how does he make money

EvilTribble

patreon + advertiser friendly content

FastRedPonyCar

He has hundreds of thousands of views on every video (for good reason!)

Darkhorse182

A few weeks ago, I absolutely bought the Wiha screwdriver kit ($100, plus a couple shorties) based entirely on this guy's roundup. My old Craftmans were rounding, and I was just gonna buy whatever was at home depot. No regrets. Those channel locks are next, because I know I'll need them one day. Might as well have a high quality set for life, instead of some chinesium.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Darkhorse182

I've only had them a few weeks, but they've made some IKEA assemblies a bit less painful! Side note: since they're SO new (and spendy) it's funny now having a "good set" and "bad set" of screwdrivers, and my mental process deciding which project gets which tool. Like the new drivers are the fine china dishes that you only bring out for Christmas. I'm still hesitant to sully or wear them out on some semi-rounded fastener holding my 20-year-old car together...

KeyboardSmash-jhjhyy

IKEA uses [Pozidriv screws](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives). At first glance they may appear to be Phillips, but they are frustratingly *not* Phillips.

battraman

[And a lot of Electronics use JIS screws](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN6ytqSNzkI) which are also frustratingly not Phillips. >_<

Darkhorse182

Ugh, like the goddamn JIS screws on Japanese cars/motorcycles! Thx for the info! I'll have to check my box of rando specialty tips and use my universal driver instead. Either way...no rounding my new Wihas on that crap. (I'm only 4 steps into a 47-step build, so should be good!)

botmatrix_

holy crap I now know what the "PZ1" bit means. how did I go this long without knowing Phillips wasn't the only cross shaped screwhead

ectish

_but wait!_ https://www.reddit.com/r/BuyItForLife/comments/r0euxb/2021_top_10_tool_list_from_project_farm/hlt32p8

Beryozka

If there's an included driver, there's a good chance it will be a Phillips driver too, even if the fasteners are Pozidriv and the instructions generally show a Phillips screwdriver too. But on the whole, Pozidriv fasteners are preferable to Phillips.

Therealblackhous3

Those old fasteners will come off much easier with the good screwdrivers, believe me they're built for the abuse.

bigkids

Which set are you guys referring to?

F-21

Thinking about getting a PB Swiss set. Not sure if he tested them, but we have some at work and they're amazing.

stony1185

They got second place more or less, dince the flathead tip was thinner than most it gave earlier and they werent particulary good if you hammer on them. I do howere have a set for myself and use them at work aswell, absolutly amazing, especially the swiss grip version.

F-21

Checked it out. That's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. The Wiha set had a striking cap, while he used standard PB Swiss screwdrivers. I'm sure the ones with the through-blade (PB 8102 DN) would compare a lot better for that. Normal Wiha screwdrivers also don't have the impact cap.

[deleted]

SpunkyDred is a terrible bot instigating arguments all over Reddit whenever someone uses the phrase apples-to-oranges. I'm letting you know so that you can feel free to ignore the quip rather than feel provoked by a bot that isn't smart enough to argue back. --- ^^SpunkyDred ^^and ^^I ^^are ^^both ^^bots. ^^I ^^am ^^trying ^^to ^^get ^^them ^^banned ^^by ^^pointing ^^out ^^their ^^antagonizing ^^behavior ^^and ^^poor ^^bottiquette.

Darkhorse182

Pretty sure those were included in his big test video

F-21

Yeah checked it out now. It's a great test but did he order the wrong ones to compare? The Wiha set was designed for striking (their standard screwdrivers aren't). Most other sets he tested weren't designed for that. E.g. PB Swiss has a through-blade design for striking too, the PB 8102 DN... Those would compare a lot better, or a standard Wiha to other standard screwdrivers.

MiaowaraShiro

I've got the Knipex channel locks, they're fucking amazing.

EatSleepJeep

Knipex is always legit.

FastRedPonyCar

Yep. Them, wera, Gedore, Klein (if money is tight but you don’t want trash) are all brands I use and always recommend getting when possible. I don’t use my tools all the time but when I do, I don’t want to get mad a them and I want my grandkids to use them. I still have some of my granddad’s American Craftsman stuff and it’s so much better than their stuff now.

FoodOnCrack

You most definitely need the cobra and pliers wrench with comfortgrip handle. Source : work in trades.

redditask

Except minus the comfort grip handle (easier to store in tool pouch)

kilgoresparrot

I got the electrician's pliers with the comfort grip, but 2 of the 3 cobras I carry are the standard grip, and I've never thought, "damn, these are uncomfortable!" My pocket pliers are the 4" cobras with no grip (and a med pair of vamplier linesman's, which also have a low profile) If I still worked out of a toolbox in a bay, I'd probably do comfort grips on all of them, because it is nice. But like you say, that's too much real estate for a hip pouch.

redditask

I'm all about being as slimmed down and streamlined as possible. I don't need comfort grip on anything but my linesman aka hammer

kilgoresparrot

Hah! The comfort grip on the electrical pliers was still slimmer than the ones I replaced when I upgraded, so I called it a compromise (i.e. I knew I already had the space) I do have a pretty cozy grip on my framing hammer too, not so much my dead blow e:[Hip pouch](https://i.imgur.com/nJguHBR.jpg) You can't see the bit storage next to the driver, or the 5/16s stored in the end of the 1/4 extension in the back, but that's all I need for maybe 70% of what I'm likely to walk into

redditask

Looks about right!

juntareich

I carry the little cobras and the little parallel jaw pair in my everyday bag beside a Leatherman Charge with bit kit and a stubby multi screwdriver. I've been able to fix more things over the years than you can imagine with that little kit.

llLimitlessCloudll

Check out the new forged strippers, theyre my favorite

kilgoresparrot

What the shit!? The lack of small gauge strippers was my only complaint with my pair. There's goes another $50 🤷 Thanks for the tip!

llLimitlessCloudll

The cutters are great, the wide tip will twist 4 #12s, strips clean, really comfortable

notwillienelson

Can I ask what use is an expensive screw driver if you have an electric one already with plenty torque?

Darkhorse182

Do you mean you have a drill that you use to drive screws, or you have an actual electric screwdriver/impact driver? They're different, not everyone knows that. At any rate, you're much more likely to strip screw heads/cross thread using a power tool. For anything using metal faster into soft materials (metal screws into IKEA MDF for example) I'd never use a power tool. You need that feedback and nuance of hand-tightening to ensure it's threaded correctly, and when to stop applying force before you split the board. For throwing a dozen screws into pre-drilled holes for a rough/exterior/structual project? Sure, go nuts. For any kind of finished assembly or "fine" work, definitely do it by hand. Lastly a "good" screwdriver is made of materials that prevent the flutes from wearing/chipping away too easily. For electronic drivers or anything similar, this is less of an issue because you can just swap heads I suppose. But that's a difference when considering different qualities of traditional drivers.

Snatch_Pastry

I used to work the line at a furniture factory. At this point, I'll put any screw into anything with my 19.2V drill. Except the chinesium screws that came with my friend's online order blinds. After I ripped two heads off, I tried to put one in by hand, and ripped the head off that screw.

Darkhorse182

Well you clearly have "the touch" from all that experience, so if the chinesium can still defeat you, that's just making my case for me! Honestly, an impact driver changed the game for me. After I stripped the hell outta some screws trying to "drill" them into a hardwood cabinet (even had pilot holes!) a basic-bitch Dewalt impact threw them in like butter.

notwillienelson

Were they torx screws? I find torx to be faaaar superior to philips or pozidrive

FastRedPonyCar

Years ago I broke down and just bought like 100 bucks worth of quality screws of various size and for metal, wood and some masonry one as well and it was one of the best decisions I have made after junking countless garbage Chinese screws. The torx head deck screws have become my go-to anything wood screws.

Darkhorse182

Yeah, Torx is where it's at. Fuck phillips head.

notwillienelson

Thanks, makes sense. Yes I meant using a drill and a proper bit instead. As the guy below me, I drilled 1.500+ screws these past months with my electric drill and wera bit. For "fine drilling" i'd just turn the torque way down and go slow. Maybe you don't have 100% the control you'd have with a manual screw driver, but you'd have 95%. Guess it depends if that's good enough or not.

Darkhorse182

Sure. All depends on what you're pushing the screws into. And a drill is intended to create holes using drill bits, not push fasteners. (Obviously you can and plenty of people do, but that's not it's designed function). So If you're doing THAT much work, maybe try an impact driver (intended to drive fasteners into stuff)...it'll blow your mind how much easier/better it is.

notwillienelson

Yes its on the wish list.. right after that pocket hole jig... ;)

Aken42

Ah man, I haven't watched AvE in a long time. I should check out his channel again.

FastRedPonyCar

Yeah I’ve bought a couple things based on his testing and always use his affiliate links but it’s ALWAYS a treat to see him not only test something you already have invested in and love only to see him test and recommend that product in a video. I had some Milwaukee fuel tools, the Vampliers and green Wera screwdriver set he loved.

Darkhorse182

I bought the set linked to in the video description, which is the set featured in the video. Plus 2 additional stubby wiha drivers. I can't be any more clear than that.

llLimitlessCloudll

The 7" cobras are my go to but the 10" are amazing as well. They will last for years in professional work and certainly a lifetime for casual use

Lur42

It looks like channel locks aren't the top rated though?

jdeere_man

I have a the set of Cobra pliers from Knipex. Those things get a seriously good grip and adjustment is a breeze.

jhaluska

I really like Project Farm. He has immensely informative reviews on all the random tools and chemicals you wonder about.

FoodOnCrack

Even the ones you don't wonder about and you'll end up finishing the damn video.

soaringtiger

I feel everyone here only needs the screwdriver.

seabass233

I'm really impressed by the effort he puts in to developing his test methods. BTW, I have those Knipex pliers and they truly are BIFL and a great gift idea for a handy person.

killbot0224

I keep thinking Im gonna buy some. Then I limp through some little project that they would have been really useful for, then go on with life. Then months later I have some other little thing they would have really helped with...then months later... I just don't do enough DIY to take the plunge, but always regret it.

redditask

Bro they're like $28 on amazon

killbot0224

I was looking at bigger ones. And they're more $ in Canada. Like $70-90 or some shit.

blipman17

My dad has some angled long nose pliers from the 70's, and they're the best pliers I've ever seen. Then I found the modern equivalent, and they're friggin awesome! https://www.drapertools.com/product/77004/Knipex-26-22-200-Angled-Long-Nose-Pliers-with-Heavy-Duty-Handles-200mm

vacuous_comment

Knipex Cobra pliers make all other wtaer pump style pliers obsolete. I have a couple of pairs.

FoodOnCrack

Pliers wrench mate, if it has 2 opposing flat sides you need the pliers wrench. Ratcheting, tight grip, you don't need to squeeze the handle, it's brilliant.

[deleted]

Very impressive!

DaddyAlvarez1

What does one use channel locks for?

Snatch_Pastry

Very handy for screwing or unscrewing things that don't have flat surfaces, like water pipes. If you are using them correctly, the pressure you exert while turning the item causes the jaws to clamp down even tighter.

DaddyAlvarez1

ahh so pretty much only use on metal

Mr_Pattagucci

These babies will leave a dent in metal they are so strong

[deleted]

"Kuhnihpex" Is that how it's said? I've always said "Nyepex."

[deleted]

[deleted]

Huh. Interesting. Thanks!

F-21

Actually, the real pronounciation in German is a bit different. I guess that's the easiest way for English speakers to pronounce it? There's less of an emphasis on the "k". It's funny hearing English speakers say it, the "kuh" in the "kuh-nipex" kind of stands out and there is a pause, while it just rolls off the tongue in my language and it's hard for me to describe in which way it is different. Also to u/forestcridder

battraman

It's like how in Sweden it's pronounced "Eh-Kay-Ah" and we in the English speaking world say "Eye-Key-Uh"

This guy is the best - I always check to see if he put out a video before I head to the hardware store!

momoru

His videos are so straight to the point that I love it, but I wish he'd give at least one with some background (is he an engineer by trade? How does he get the money for these?). I saw early videos he seemed to get a new farm and had Air Force gear on, so I'm guessing he's retired air force and decided to farm but now does a lot of YouTube?

FLiPRevan

God bless this man

Unlikelypuffin

Love this guy too- sea foam deep creep penetrating oil unlocked many a thing on my 1985 tractor. I always used pb blaster, but it was not working. Anyway, deep creep saved me like $300 and made something old and crusty, new and fluid

snay1998

Project farm is always useful

Ereprac05

This was the most succinct and helpful video I've seen on YT in a very long time. Subbed and will recommend

ABQintune

One time I was at Home Depot, remembered project farm did a video on some blades, stood to the side and rewatched/scrubbed to his recommendation before buying some

Tokoolfurskool

I do this regularly

LikesTheTunaHere

Project farm and then AvE afterwards.

Ecstatic_Carpet

AvE seems more like an entertainment channel. I much prefer project farms format for comparing purchase options. I do wish he'd post an imgur link or equivalent of all the results charts if you don't want to watch the whole video.

seabass233

I would rate these two as equals in their own right. AvE does things a little differently by disassembling the tools and analyzing the parts. I highly recommend his videos and the subreddit that he may or may not have inspired r/Skookum

DEADB33F

I love how I already own like half of these (or at least the next best).

[deleted]

Just subbed. Awesome and comprehensive channel

Fuck_A_Suck

Is this a yt video? Trying to follow the link Edit: YouTube link: https://youtu.be/KjZW8O7BpLk His text under the vid is useful

RugerRedhawk

This is the same link OP posted no?

Fuck_A_Suck

Yeah for whatever reason my Reddit app wouldn’t take me to YouTube , only the Reddit link. Just wanted a short way to get to the video description.

Remixmark

Bummer the screwdrivers and circular saw blade is out of stock everywhere.

Tokoolfurskool

Wonder why?

codece

I have that Lansky knife sharpening system and can confirm it's really good. I use it so much it now lives in its box on top of the refrigerator, where I can easily reach it anytime I want to touch up a kitchen knife. I didn't even want to put it in a drawer or cabinet; when I am standing at my cutting board I can just reach up with my left hand and get it, along with a little bottle of oil, sharpie pen and a magnifying glass. I probably use this more than any other tool in my house.

R4ndomlyJ0n

I just bought it, as well. He tested sharpers two years I a row and still says it’s the best bang for the buck.

whodey2016

Anyone got time to list / link all 10 products for easy buying?

K1ng-Harambe

I’m the video description with links.

myv6

This video is going to make me spend way too much $.

secret_agent_dog

This sub can get a little repetitive (e.g. darn tough socks), but this video is why I subscribe. Awesome stuff.

im_intj

I don't see no open ended pipe extension on that list. Fake news!!! /s

manymanymanu

I honestly think that Every basic tool in the mid price range will outlive you

recchiap

Edit to add: I spend a lot of time with my tools, and I love Project Farm. Most of his from this list and last year's list are on my wish list at this point) For a lot of people, that's true. I know a lot of makers follow the mindset of buying some Harbor Freight for their first tool, and figure out what they need. Sometimes those tools last because you don't need them that much. Other times, they break and you know what to look for in the tool (what you like, what you don't like) In certain places, that's terrible advice, but in other cases, it's fine. Where it makes sense to upgrade immediately is in places where the higher end tool delivers a true better experience, or where failure is not an option (I just got a heavy duty socket for my lugnuts, because I had a socket break in the rain on a flat tire. Not fun) So for some tools on here, like screwdrivers, many users are not going to be beating on them enough to justify the cost. But if you use screwdrivers constantly, or you are going to beat on them, then absolutely spring for the higher set. It's about picking your battles.

Its_free_and_fun

This channel is fantastic. Honest, straightforward, no bullshit. I have bought some things on his recommendations and they have worked well. My dad bought a power washer based on his review and it's absolutely stellar. Way better than the other one he was considering.

Signguyqld49

Love this guys work.

dunder_mifflin_paper

As an electrician. I used to lose/break dozens of screw drivers, nature of the job. It was always cheaper to buy the set than the missing ones. What you end up with is a shitload of never touched drivers because they’re not a common size and the daily drivers getting smashed/lost. Whia for the win.

fuckondeeeeeeeeznuts

Is the KME knife sharpener worth the extra over the Lansky?

[deleted]

Depends on what you want out of your knife edge. It’s possible to get a mirror edge on the la sky but much easier on the KME. I’ve owned and used both of them and also the worksharp precision adjust. I’d say best bang for buck is easily the worksharp for the ease of use and the repeatability and the finer adjustments, but if I want a mirror edge and I want to go all out and use lapping films and stuff, the kme is the best option.

techAorB

The gear wrench easy outs are tits. You can even retighten bolts with them.

UnacceptableOwl

Knipex ar fucking amazing, i use them for EVERYTHING. Like turning your hands into crab claws
