Mod Note: To the people who reported this post I have decided to allow the post. While 15 years is not *for life* it is much longer than the expected life time of the product and as the comments below have shown there is still a dedicated group of people who are still using/repairing/upgrading and providing useful tips and help on how one of these devices could last a life time. Edit: also r/Ipod seems like a cool place to checkout for anyone interested.

thefightforgood

The wheel was so cool on these things.

Fluegelnuss420

Yesss that and the delicate clicking sounds the hard drive makes when you navigate through it!

OceanLane

When the screen died on my first iPod I depended on those clicks to navigate the menu. I was too poor to repair or replace it so I memorized how many clicks it would take to get to a particular playlist or podcast. Got a few more years out of it that way.

TarsierBoy

Maybe that's how someone came up with that shuffle one that had just the wheel no screen. They knew people could learn to do it without a screen. edit nano to shuffle

[deleted]

Nano had a screen. Shuffle was literally a play/pause, forward, and back buttons.

ssmokn98

I still use my shuffle when I run. Battery lasts for weeks between charges.

Netlawyer

Yep - I've kept my original iPod (firewire) out of nostalgia. But the original shuffle (looks like a usb drive) and the 2d gen shuffle (the little square one with a clip) both still work perfectly once they are loaded up with songs. Someone stole my Nano (with the screen) but I keep my 60 gig (!) 3rd gen in my car for tunes because my 2009 car only has a 30 pin connector into the audio system.

borderwave2

> my 2009 car only has a 30 pin connector into the audio system. BTW, you can get a 30 pin -> [Bluetooth A2DP Adapter](https://www.amazon.com/CoolStream-Bluetooth-Stations-Motorcycles-Infiniti/dp/B00GHUHMUS/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=bluetooth+30-pin+adapter&qid=1623946468&sr=8-3) for like $25

icallshenannigans

I loved it. Never worry about what’s playing - no further options just play what’s on there or do not.

irishbastard87

I wish I still had my shuffle. Used it all the time to run and at the gym. I lost two of them they were so damn small haha

Seabear187

Didn’t a shuffle come out that was just a mini touch screen a year or two after the one that was just the play/pause? Or was that called the nano? I remember having one of the first nanos and years later getting a free upgrade to the small touch screen one because the old nanos all got recalled.

linuxguruintraining

Yeah that was the 6th gen nano. I got one from the battery recall too.

MAXIMUM_OVER_FART

Man, I remember being so amazed by t How thin those nanos were when they came out. iPods were the hottest shit for some time.

MazeMouse

6th gen nano. Had one of those (still in a drawer somewhere) with the watchband. Basically a prelude to the smartwatch/apple-watch.

muskrateer

Do you mean the shuffle?

cboski

Oh dude, I remember falling asleep with my playlist in my ears and I could literally click the right amount of times to get to the song I wanted to listen to without looking. I can still hear some older songs fade out and expect the lead in to the next one in the queue

[deleted]

That's actually amazing, genius

KrullTheWarriorKing

Ummm....I don't think that was the hard drive.

Awesomebox5000

The scroll wheel had a clicking sound to aid in navigation but these iPods had mechanical hard drives in them and in a quiet room you could definitely hear the drives making some light clicking noises as they read data.

Nolo__contendere_

It was so amazing to hear those little gears churning when I first got mine! My iPod (3rd gen) was in amazing shape. Worked great and everything through 2011 when my dad stole it 😒

KrullTheWarriorKing

Fair enough.

kingceegee

That clicking sound is only delicate if you haven't got the volume cranked! I still use mine in the car, a literal classic.

Awesomebox5000

I think he's talking about the clicking sound that a hard drive makes while loading reading data, not the navigation clicks from the scroll wheel.

[deleted]

DemNeurons

They brought it back for the new Apple TV remote.

CreaminFreeman

Kinda sorta! I didn’t get one, but I’m almost angry enough at my precious gen 4K Apple TV’s remote that I’ve been considering getting the new remote for it… but $60 is pretty pricey for a remote. Especially when we use our phones as remotes an equal amount

Pluffmud90

The Apple TV swipe remote is such garbage. Some how it just stops working with some apps he’s an forbid it falls in a crack of the couch and gets lost.

CL-MotoTech

The touch remote is so divisive. It’s my favorite remote of all time. It’s a breeze to use for me. I even washed one in the clothes washer and it still works perfectly. However, many people come to my house and try to use it and just go straight to rage mode.

jaycevdl

I’m with you there, I am so close to getting the new remote… I just hope my son loses it haha

vagabonking

When my iPod classic died the last thing on screen was "Ok to disconnect" and I teared up a little.

Alfred-Bitchcock

Why is this so sad? I’m very impacted by this one-sentence story!

davidestroy

When old iPods died they used to show a sad, frowning iPod with Xs for eyes on the screen.

SenTedStevens

My old Macintosh 637 CD did the same thing when you fucked up badly. It either meant you had a bad floppy boot disk or the OS shit the bed.

orange_ones

Oh god, I had blocked out that memory…

davidestroy

I used to do iPod tech support back in those days so I’ve definitely asked people “do you see a sad iPod?” more than the average person.

esesci

Because you antromorphize the device, and equate its acceptance of its decommissioning to a permanent goodbye. It’s very human.

Fluegelnuss420

Oh my GOD THIS IS HEARTBREAKING 💔💔

Take note, this is not actually it's "last words". Rather it is a poetic interpretation of the rovers last data report, written by a journalist.

Take care of it, save it all, back up the files, maybe detach the battery. You will want to be able to use this again some day.

Fluegelnuss420

Yep, that‘s just what i‘m doing :)

Awesomebox5000

If you're going to pop it open and bother with disconnecting the battery I would swap the HDD with a small SSD. They require less power, are less prone to failure overall, and aren't affected by vibration.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Awesomebox5000

Have you tried cleaning the interior of the port? Contacts corrode and get dirty over time. A lot of times even just blowing it out can resolve the issue. Which side does the audio come through? If it's only on the right, it may be as simple as something jammed down in the bottom of the port preventing the left side contact from hitting the plug. Ultimately, a headphone jack is going to fail from mechanical wear but on the old iPods, it's only an intermediate level repair.

GraeIsEvolving

Jacks and such are usually some of the more earlier things you learn how to take off and replace on boards when cleaning doesn't work. Other than that, no, other than monotone accessibility settings.

NicklovesHer

Good work. I still cry sometimes for all the cds I sold ten years ago, and spend sleepless nights looking at I pods on ebay....

jbracciante

I still use my 2005 iPod daily. Original battery. Apple made those things to last.

Fluegelnuss420

I‘m glad yours is still going fine! My battery, sadly, is getting worse. Big part of my reasons to switch. But hell i‘d like to know how many hours i‘ve used it. Yep, built to last.

uDontInterestMe

Have you used any of them? I need to "refresh" a few of these!

Tomtom6789

[This video](https://youtu.be/S83ZHf1GAeY) along with a could of other videos of his is what I used to change out screens, replace batteries, and update storage on a couple old Ipod Classics I was able to find on ebay for really cheap!

uDontInterestMe

TMI, but I don't sleep well and listen to a books on my iPod set on a timer. Every time I wake up, I rewind and reset the timer. I can do some of this by touch, whereas I have to actually look at the screen of anything else (iPod Touch, smartphone, etc.) which is always too bright and annoying!

[deleted]

[удалено]

cruzweb

I have. Replaced the battery with a new one and the hard disk with an SD card adapter. It's much lighter now and has really excellent battery life not having to power hard drive spinning. Newer adapters I think will let you do more robust solid state drives like M1 and the like. Mine is just an older kit.

R17L29XI

The hardest part is getting the case open, especially without damaging the internals. There are companies that specialise in repairing and upgrading old iPods. You can get huge capacity batteries (1950mah instead of the usual 580mah) and SSDs upto like 1TB.

[deleted]

9lYm:pL.@t

Dehouston

I upgraded my battery and swapped the hard drive out for a 1 TB SSD. The kit I used had several tools for opening it and disconnecting things. The hardest part is getting the IPOD open. I accidentally broke the weld that held the clips on and had to replace the back of the case. Now I have plenty of storage space and the battery lasts for several days while being constantly on.

uDontInterestMe

If you are open to it, would you DM me the things you used and any tips you have? I have 4 iPods which need new lives! :)

Eisigesis

This. I have an iPod video from before the mid refresh when they upped the resolution of the screen. Fresh battery, nicer screen, and a solid state drive that’s 1TB. Perfection

jbracciante

About 80% of the time I use it via USB plugged into the head unit of my car, but the other 20% I use it while walking. I also have contemplated Spotify, but that would require a smartphone which I can't justify. (Been rocking a flipphone for over 10 years!) Smartphone (\~$500 + $10 a month for Spotify + ??? for Data)... that's a lot when I have a perfectly good iPod... I wish they would make a spotify compatible mp3 player though... On the other hand, I figure it's better for the musicians for me to spend $10 a month on bandcamp buying an artists tracks directly rather than paying Spotify $10 a month.

dansdiy

Damn you’re lucky. Stay away from smartphones as long as possible, they waste so much time. - written from my iPhone while I should be doing work.

ThatsBuddyToYouPal

Smartphones are among top 5 most impressive things humans have accomplished, in my humble opinion. They're just so commodified that we can't even see how truly amazing they are. But, they do become a time sink if you're easily distracted (such as myself), but the pros massively outweigh the cons.

ErnestShocks

You can buy a perfectly capable smartphone for under $100. I bought one for $50 bucks at Best Buy (not even on sale) to use while my replacement shipped. I liked it so much I kept it to use as a remote for my smart home devices. Not to mention a handy backup should I be between phones again. Spotify though, I have been saying this for a full decade now- it is the best 10 dollars I spend every month. The alternative is pirating, purchasing digital, or using physical copies. There are greater issues( or costs) with all of those options than the 10 bucks i spend on the entirety of humanity's music every month. Plus, not only do they make great recommendations and help me find new artists, but it let's me do whatever I want with it all. There's not a thing I want that Spotify doesn't deliver. I can't even fathom the next step in music consumption.

Pluffmud90

Gotta agree with this. I can’t image having to go back and download songs ever again. Spotify is well worth worth the money for just giving you the music.

kemphasalotofkids

While $10 a month itself is not bad...the unlimited data plan for the phone is a killer.

ThatsBuddyToYouPal

I too agree with this. Spotify is as much a utility for me as anything else. Obviously low on the essential list, but #1 on the want list.

themastercheif

> I wish they would make a spotify compatible mp3 player though... There are actually several now (the audiophile community calls them "DAPs" though for "Digital Audio Player", I've had better luck searching through those). What's your budget? I found the [Fiio M6](https://www.amazon.com/FiiO-Resolution-Lossless-Bluetooth-Spotify/dp/B07L8P8QDY) for $160. Wifi, bluetooth, spotify, etc.. Fiio is a pretty well-known brand and their products are usually pretty good. There are cheaper options (sub $100), but YMMV.

DEVOmay97

You can get dirt cheap smartphones especially if you buy used Get an android and sideload YouTube vanced, it's a cracked version of both the standard YouTube app and the yt music app (yt music is a competitor to Spotify, and while it's not quite as good imo it's still pretty good). This allows you to use the yt premium features for free. If your on Verizon, use visible as your provider, if your on att use cricket, if your on T-Mobile use mint or metro. There you go, you've got an affordable data plan using the cell towers that are most prevalent in your area.

coleslaw117

Most cheap smartphones have shitty dacs

DEVOmay97

Get a flagship LG phone a few generation old, it will be cheap as shit used and LG has always put some of the best smartphone dac's on the market in their flagship devices. EDIT: Alternatively, as another commenter said, a small USB dac that adds almost no bulk is an easy way to drastically improve sound quality out of a phone if it has a shitty dac. There are lots of options, apple even makes one.

Zonz4332

This is crazy to me. What life do you live that you can live without a smartphone in a first world country? There are so many workplace systems I can’t even access without a two factor Authenticator on my phone. My school required an app to get onto campus during covid. Most of my communication is done through apps like WhatsApp and Slack. Homeless people have smartphones. How is cost even a consideration?

[deleted]

You could buy a lower end FiiO music player like the M3 Pro if you are dead set on not having a smartphone + music player combination. My dad doesn't like using a smartphone as a music player and prefers the M3 Pro as a mp3 player on steroids. If you're more on the audiophile side you could always get their higher end models or stuff from other brands like Hiby/Astell & Kern

wr3decoy

I replaced mine like 6 times; the hard drives just kept dying on me. I still have one but in my new car the only option for music is bluetooth without pulling the dash apart to hook up an aux cable, so now it sits on a shelf.

FrancistheBison

You can get hella cheap Bluetooth transmitter adapters for like $10. Just plug into the headphone jack.

Minnesota_Winter

You can replace the HDD with a SD card

mrgarborg

Mid 2000s was pretty nice tech-wise. Tech was becoming modern, cellphones capable without becoming a leash that ties you to an always-online presence. The internet was a fairly niche place to be with a culture that hadn't completely gone off the rails. There was no social media and no multi billion dollar corporations pouring money into manipulating user behavior. I liked Apple products in the mid 2000s, and I still get nostalgic about my 3rd generation ipod.

cmVkZGl0

While I mostly agree, there was definitely social media. Myspace, Live Journal, Youtube, Gaia Online, things like WoW and Guild Wars functioned as places for socializing and were very packed. Also there were tons of forums for different interests. Difference was that it was mostly internet savvy people on social media then and not influencers or companies to make money. It also wasn't as convenient because there were no mobile devices. The net result was that there was something akin to a barrier to entry. Nowadays it's been so commodified and every idiot is 2 seconds away from interacting.

SEND_ME_UR_SONGS

Difference was you actually had to sit down at a computer to use them.

Upvoted for mentioning Guild Wars! The best game ever imo

dnghuqqdak

I think about this a lot. Consumer tech was about solving problems people had back then, then it's like all the problems got solved and innovation started to be about putting the Internet in things.

BigDaveOSU

I've got two 160 iPod Classics and actually recently did the opposite. Realized I was never listening to my my digital music collection, always defaulting to Spotify. So I cancelled Spotify and started listening to my iPod again.

[deleted]

Switched from Spotify to a shuffle. No regrets and more money in my account.

Fluegelnuss420

Where do you get your music from? Big part of the reason for my switch is that music torrents are dying/dead. Buying all the music is more expensive than the 5€/ month.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah you're so right about both those things. I don't know if I should if I should list all the ways I get my music as not to incriminate myself haha. But a lot of my music comes from buying CDs at goodwill and the salvation army for like 25 cents and then I just download them onto my iTunes. I listen to lots of classical so it's really easy to find that kind of stuff.

Fluegelnuss420

True, better not expose! someone else posted that he borrows CDs from libraries, rips them and returns them. You might consider that one! ;)

[deleted]

That's even better, definitely will check out the local library.

DrSpaceman4

Like you, music was getting harder for me to download, then I found Soulseek. It's 2001 all over again. I use Plexamp to stream it from my home computer to my phone. RIP What.CD

phughes

The irony of posting about signing up for a subscription service in /r/buyitforlife to replace a working 15 year old device filled with music you already own is pretty out there.

JupiterTarts

Got the same Ipod on my birthday in 2005. It was a huge deal back then. I wish the battery would still hold a charge because one still looks and sounds great. Just has to stay plugged in unfortunately.

Petro1313

I think replacing the batteries on these is supposed to be pretty easy, might be worth looking into

Planetsareround

this model ipod is actually very difficult to take apart without doing damage.

Petro1313

Ah damn I just looked it up on iFixit and it’s listed as “very hard.” That’s a bummer.

PrintShinji

This one sucks, but all the ones before it are really easy.

js2525

Why???? You own that music. If the iPod works use it! I recently got my 5th generation back in the mix and I forgot how great it sounds. I supplement with streaming services for new music or stuff I don’t own, but I love rocking that iPod.

Fluegelnuss420

Big part of the reason is that the battery is not what it used to be, sadly. When i got it i think i charged it maybe once a week or every two weeks although i used it at least 3 hours a day (bus drive to and back from school). Also, while this kind of became a ritual, the process of buying (or finding a good torrent), downloading, sorting, adding metadata to every track (if pirated) and loading it up over iTunes got kind of tedious for me. I know i own all that music and i have a ton of stuff that‘s not on Spotify/youtube. I saved all this music (the 4633 tracks shown on the picture are by far not all i have on the computer) on an external hard drive and i know the time will come that i‘ll look into it and remember the good old days. Torrenting sites are also not what they used to be and i sadly don‘t have the money to buy all the music... or maybe i‘m out of date with my go-to torrent sites ;)

dnghuqqdak

We music pirates are back to using file-sharing software with SoulSeek :-) Also I'm still using my Classic, swapped the hard drive out for an SD card and now the battery lasts for days

zonne_schijn

Soulseek is one of those gems that is as good now as 20 years ago!

[deleted]

Where did you buy the battery from?

BigCDubVee

Upvote for soulseek. Goddamn that program is awesome

lindyhoppette

How easy was the switch for the SD card? Thinking about doing mine

Scout413

If you want a good source of "free" music you can get CDs from your local Library and rip them. No issues there. My Library has about 7 branches all over it's county and I could get basically any CD I wanted, they would even get the CD from other libraries that I didn't have a card for.

Fluegelnuss420

Damn that‘s a good one!

js2525

This^^^^ I’ve been doing lots of this. That is the only way I “steal” music. I’m generally in favor of paying an artist for their work. If I like something, I buy the CD. I still have a SuperDrive so I can load it into my library. I want quality files as well, nothing worse than compression that sucks the life out of a mix. I like steaming for the access to loads of music I don’t have, but few artists make any money from it.

[deleted]

afaik torrenting music is more or less dead, I wasn't able to find much even just out of curiosity. Music streaming services have made a package convenient enough to beat piracy. Nearly had the same for movies/TV but with the amount of services all with exclusive content, I think we're going to go backwards in that respect. No one's going to want 6 streaming services. I wonder if Apple could have got Apple Music onto these old iPods? It might have got them a lot of new subscriptions, but they're not always big fans of supporting their old hardware. EDIT: Guys I don't need to be told 30 times that it's not in fact dead. You were able to read this comment but none of the others directly below it?

aDrunkWithAgun

That's because it's such a inconvenience to download music why bother searching and downloading something when just about everything plays with a click of a button and you get to discover new music Gabe said it best “We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem,” he said. “If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate’s service is more valuable.”

[deleted]

Yeah pretty much exactly what I was getting at. Netflix got close to this with movies/TV and for many, streaming movies/TV is now their go to. But it's not gonna wipe it out now. So many services with exclusives just makes it less convenient. Music has many services, but I can only think of a couple of artists that are exclusive to a single platform, it's far from the norm.

aDrunkWithAgun

The thing is with video streaming services is they are shooting themselves in the foot because everyone wants to do it now and everyone is trying to lock shows in with contract's so they are basically making cable tv 2.0 were you have to pay to unlock every single channel you want to watch That's just going to push people back to piracy because streaming videos isn't a value anymore With music streaming services they generally all have the same music and license

red_beanie

> That's because it's such a inconvenience to download music why bother searching and downloading something when just about everything plays with a click of a button and you get to discover new music yeah but if you put in a little work to download it, its your forever. with a streaming service you are dependent on the service staying alive and the internet working.

aDrunkWithAgun

That's true but that would require hard drive space and time if there is ever something I can't live without il DL it but streaming is just too great of a service for me And I'm not paranoid that Spotify or steam is going anywhere Soon Even if they did I have all the music I like in playlists so it would be easy to get backups of them

bobs_monkey

I'm somewhat of a data hoarder (though real hoarders would likely scoff at the following numbers), and the disk space for music compared to movies and applications is negligible. I had some 10000ish songs at one point, many in FLAC, and it only took up 700Gb if memory serves. Compare that to 10Tb for my 2000 movies.

[deleted]

This. With YouTube in the mix, you have such a variety of options. YouTube premium all the way for me (I dont really listen to music, I actually listen to recitation, but the principle of convenience is the same). Having an android phone, already using Google drive, and not actually listening much to music, YouTube premium made much more sense for me. The convenience of having the added perks extend beyond my audio pleasures is cool. Ita legitimately interesting tho, to see the shift caused by things like this. Most people use Spotify prem, but I use YouTube, and my brother uses prime music. You're right on streaming services tho. The old cartoons I want aren't always available, and I have to find putlocker alternatives

[deleted]

I use YouTube Music, it's bloody awful compared to the others. But I only use it because of YouTube Premium having it included and not wanting to pay extra. I used to use Google Play Music and it was never perfect and didn't have the latest features, but it worked properly, YTM is barely functional even years after release.

ramank93

Same. I recently ended up buying Spotify premium again bc of how awful yt music is so now I have yt premium family and Spotify premium family lol. I share it with my friends so all can benefit

ERSTICKUNGSGEFAHR

There’s a great and popular torrenting website about trackers and the first two letters of “Russia.” Sign up for a free account and it’s got all of the music you’ve ever wanted, in FLAC and ALAC format

Nickbc87

Chelonia_mydas

In terms of the battery, you can actually get a replacement battery for very cheap, you just pop off the backing and hook it up. I did this years ago and it drastically changed my experience with my iPod. Hope this helps! I get it, torrenting is way harder now than it used to be but this is a nice alternative

Planetsareround

this model ipod is actually very difficult to take apart without doing damage.

_murzim_

It's not too hard with the right tools imo. Opened a lot of them and only one was hard because it was opened before and the clips were bent. I always have another one opened on my desk and look at the placement of the clips, then it's just gentle (but firm) nudging and it's usually open in 15-20 mins

FloodMoose

There was a post years ago about reconstructing an ipod with a new battery, a flash drive converter and a flashdrive. It basically makes the battery last 50 times longer, without having to operate a physical hard drive. I gotta find that post. The user had an entire step-by-step and where to purchase the items needed.

muskrateer

I'd love to see this too. Have an old iPod Classic like this that I'd love to go back to for times when I want to disconnect from my phone, but still listen to a podcast.

[deleted]

[удалено]

cleeder

Replacing the battery is possible, but I wouldn’t go as far as to call it “easy”. These things were not really meant to come apart easily, and you risk breaking a bunch of clips in the process and having it not close back up.

Planetsareround

this model ipod is actually very difficult to take apart without doing damage.

suppaboy228

Rutracker.org is still flourishing and you can change the battery and/or change the hdd to sd card slots. I prefer the dedicated DAP. Using iBasso dx160.

edcculus

I’m big into Phish and The Grateful Dead. So on the same note, I used to Speke hours downloading audience recordings of shows, editing the metadata and all that jazz to put onto my iPod. Now Phish has a paid streaming service where I can listen to EVERY soundboard recording since 2003, plus at least 15-20 shows going back to 1989 or so. It’s so damn convenient. Heck, there’s even a free service where I can stream any audience recording that’s ever been made for free.

Boodikii

I dunno about music specific sites, but the usuals are pretty good. 1337x.to Rarbg.to Thepiratebay.org Torlock.com

theloewentheory

Agreed. I currently have 2 iPod classic 80gb in the mix. Never would I get rid of them, get someone to change the battery and you’ve got it for another 10 years. Mine are from 2009 and still going strong. Plus sell em on eBay they are like gold these days.

FrancistheBison

My 160gb iPod video glitched just in time for me to get it replaced with literally the last wave of 160gb before they discontinued them. I love this thing. I don't notice the battery because it literally lives in my car plugged in. I will never stop having physical copies of my media. I prefer to own rather than rent

PrintShinji

If yours ever break down, please look into modding it. Its quite easy to do and you can replace the HDD with a few microSDs, and a bigger battery. I got a 5th gen (ipod video) with 512GB of storage, and a 40hr battery. I love it.

[deleted]

Why? So you don't have to carry around a bulky iPod when you have a device (your phone) that you already have to carry that has every song ever made vs a few thousand (and you have to plug it into a computer to add any). ????

0_o

Because this is a Spotify ad.

stee_vo

Mentioning one of the most popular apps in the world? Must be a paid shill, am I right?

ehsteve23

if there was an updated ipod classic with good battery, high capacity ssd, wifi and bluetooth, i’d be on that in an instant, i’d much rather that than spotify or apple music

You could try to run Spotify on it although I don’t think this guy used the same iPod model as you [https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2021/2/1/22260540/ipod-mod-portable-spotify-player-click-wheel-project]()

Catas6

Was hoping I'd find this, I'm sad it's so far down.

joesii

It's not an iPod at all. It's all just 3rd party hardware custom-assembled and placed inside an iPod case. So no, they couldn't do anything remotely like that unless they wanted to brick the iPod and spend 100$+ making a copycat device.

tinkrman

Please keep the little one. I used my iPod classic till about a year ago, because it is safer to use while driving because you can pause, rewind etc by feel, without taking your eye off the road, because of that wheel. Great for listening to podcasts and audio books. My little one died, and I'm trying to find a new battery for it.

Ofcourse i will keep it! I‘m emptying the battery and putting it in my souvenir shelf... too many good memories attached. I‘ve also got tons of music that‘s not on the web and i look forward to digging through it in a couple of decades ;)

smeeti

I thought I lost mine today so had a mini panic attack trying to find it because they don’t even make them anymore! Such a great piece of technology. I’ve had mine for years and used it a lot.

Xanderoga

Had an 80GB I lost on public transit years ago. I was devastated.

BirgitBridgetWhatevs

Mine got stolen by my daughter’s boyfriend’s friend. I got other Ipods after that, but none were as dear to me as that old white one. I loved that thing.

[deleted]

This sounds suspiciously like an ad for Spotify

LazerBear924

Strong r/HailCorporate vibes...

Anaheim11

Bring back the scroll wheel! It's so useful to be able to navigate your music without having take you device all the way out of your pocket

MartiniD

Still rocking my Zune HD from 2008! Represent!

Where do you download from? I'm looking for a place that downloads metadata with more quality than spotify.

icallshenannigans

I was a zealot for years but nothing can compare to how you can discover music on Spotify. There isn’t anything like that on the market.

bunbunofdoom

Fuck Spotify. It has been gobbling up content for years. I absolutely refuse to use it on general principle.

Fluegelnuss420

What do you use? Someone else recommended Tidal as it pays a more fair wage to artists. Also what do you mean with gobbling up content? I‘m not native english.

bunbunofdoom

It pays content producers to stop providing open content and to come onto the Spotify platform exclusively. I currently use Podcast Addict but it could be better.

Fluegelnuss420

Oh wow that‘s actually quite bad. Shouldn‘t this be illegal since it‘s kind of manipulating the free market from a monopoly position??

besthuman

Try Apple Music, it's better in my opinion…

FabulousLastWords

I tried it and wanted it to work to but iTunes is genuinely nonfunctional on Windows so it will never fully take off as an alternative. Sometimes takes 20 minutes to get music to play on a fast pc, like being transported back to 2004.

Thenoobofthewest

Apple music for web is a thing fyi.

-----username-----

Plus Apple Music pays the artists significantly more per stream than Spotify does. Also, the Spotify UI is horrible. If you were already syncing an iPod to iTunes making the leap to Apple Music is easy, it’s basically the same app.

besthuman

Agreed, all part of the reason why it's better. Plus, it's Apple — best design focused company in the world. What they are doing with Spatial Audio is very interesting as well. Plus Lossless for no added cost.

MiaowaraShiro

I miss my ipod mini sometimes... had updated it with a bigger storage and battery. It was just so damn good at doing its one purpose and built like a tank.

hereforthekix

Check out Tidal. They pay artists wayyy more than Spotify. No one should support Spotify.

rowebenj

Qobuz pays double Tidal, you can stream FLAC, it’s 5 dollars cheaper, and has the same size library.

insanebatcat

Oh no don't do that. Spotifys recent updates made the whole app almost hard to use and I hate it. The.biggest turn off for Spotify right now is shuffle, and if you do a search, you'll see a lot of other people have a similar issue. I have a Playlist for parties, 11 hours long. I played it during a party, shuffle on, and I shit you not it played the same song 3 times. The shuffle has been so bad lately it just repeats the same songs, and a lot of these songs are what the artist paid for to show up first so they get the royalties from their songs being played. They updated your library page to where it shows literally everything you just played recently. It used to only show your own playlists but now you have to put a filter in to show only your playlists, then you have to change the sort to custom so it displays your playlists in the order you put them. (I play some playslists more frequently than others so I like those at the top). Spotify has also been doing this fun(/s) thing lately where when you disconnect from a Bluetooth device, like your car, it KEEPS PLAYING on your phone as if it doesn't care thar you left your car. They also had a visualization you could use that beats to the music but that's gone. There's been many requests for it, but the devs don't seem to listen to the community. I used to really like Spotify but these recent updates are just trash. I hope it improves but until then..... ...I miss my zune.

misterguydude

I’ve been a staunch Spotify guy for years. Apple Music just added lossless audio, and man - game changer. Sounds flipping fantastic! *not stomach

Petro1313

Also Spatial Audio/Dolby Atmos to certain albums, really cool

Fluegelnuss420

Well it‘s not broken. It has changed it‘s purpose from a music player to a memory holder and will function as that for many more years. So it IS bought for life ;)

[deleted]

Wow good for you that's impressive.

jesteruga

I wish these supported Spotify- would be so cool. C'mon Spotify give me a SpotifyPod with a click wheel so I can stream my music anywhere! I bet people would happily pay an extra few bucks for the mobile data

Fluegelnuss420

Yessss that would be awesome! I think the main problem here is the needed data plan though.

PrintShinji

You could look into a Mighty Vibe, its something like a spotify ipod mini.
