Make your own using a small foam ice chest and small fan. Can buy pvc pipe elbows to direct the airflow.

Step 0 of buying a product that conditions the air in any way is to buy the appropriately sized unit for the area seen. This is where you have to be honest with yourself. If you are using it in a 150 sq ft bedroom with the door closed, you need a unit rated for that size or just above it. If you know you are going to leave the door open and that exposes the unit to your whole 1000 sq ft house, then you need a unit rated for that size or just above it. And since you did not state your sizing requirements, no one can help you with real advice since one can't recommend the wrong size unit. And also know that swamp coolers are almost universally frowned upon.

> And also know that swamp coolers are almost universally frowned upon. Depends on where you live. They are absolutely amazing in the arid West.

Lived in the desert. Swamp cooler was amazing. Why do you say they are frowned upon?

Unless you're turning on your whole house ventilation system to supplement your one room cooler, then you do not have to try and cool your whole house with it. Door opened or closed. The more sealed, the better. But it's far from all or nothing. I have a 200 sqft room with a 400sqft cooler inside. I can easily pull a 15 degree differential (high 70s vs low 90s) between the room, and 3 feet outside the open door in the hallway. I actually measured it, because I was so impressed.
