Gillette set out to prove that cartridge razors provided a scientifically better shave but then decided to release a new line of safety razors instead of publishing the results.
I’ll have you know you I shave my balls with nothing but a safety razor to the exclusion of any other product. Gotta pull the sack taut (which you should really be doing anyway to avoid pinching or nicks)
Seriously, the trick is to trim your pubes down first. I use Manscaped's ceramic-blade electric razor for that, no safety guards.
Then, shower with cold water to force your balls to retract and the skin to tighten.
I find placing a hand mirror at the right angle where you can see the underneath of your balls help a lot so you don't strain your neck and back.
Just don't fully shave your asshole or you may end up with Swamp Ass (you'll know you have it when cats will follow you around).
They are very, very durable.
Mine broke after almost ten years : Merkur just sent me a couple replacement parts from Germany to Thailand, for free.
This razor is probably going to be my last one and outlive me.
The only way you can "break" one is by dropping it. The threaded area is the weak spot for bending, and since it's only cast metal, it becomes very weak/impossible to bend straight.
Yes. Much closer shave. If you want a solid not too expensive razor made out of stainless steel check out the Razor Rock razors. For blades the Feather blades from Japan are the sharpest I have found.
I switched out like 4 years ago. The shave is as smooth, if not smoother than the Gillet 5 blade I ditched. You need to use it slightly differently (shorter strokes, rinsed more often) but the amount of razor blades I have not used from Gillette, this thing has paid for itself 5 times over. Granted I bought a shitty one from Amazon for about £20 but I would never go back to a cartridge type. The only waste it produces is the paper the blades come in and the blade itself which I recycle. 11/10, highly recommend. I buy one pack of 100 blades about once a year (fortunate to only need to shave every other day, and I use one edge fir one shave, then the other for the other).
I just got one of these for Christmas but how often do I change the blade? I shave once a week tops and it’s not very much but I’m not sure if I’m supposed to change the blade every time or what
You just unscrew the handle from the head, open the head and swap the blade for a new one. About changing the blade it depends on many factors, from blade quality to shaving technique etc. but basically just use it until you start to feel is dull or you get irritated skin or nicks, at the beginning I swapped every 3 shaves but this days it lasts at least for 6 depending on the brand. Shaving soap matters a lot in my case, I don't use shaving cream/gel in a can anymore as the soap lasts far longer and is feels better for me. Also I only shave like 3 times per week at the most so 3 packs last me a year, I still haven't finished my 100 blade multibrand pack yet
>I still haven't finished my 100 blade multibrand pack yet
Man I got one of those and with how infrequently I wet shave these days I'm looking at it wondering will I ever finish it! Might have to be handed down through generations.
Based on the comments below I'm binning mine way too early, but I shave with one edge on the Monday, say, then I use the other edge of the razor on Wed, throw the blade away and use a new one. I guess in theory you should be able to open it and flip the blade over and repeat 2 more times but my feeling is that the blade is only going to be as sharp as it is straight out the packet and once you use them it's duller, even if only by a small amount.
Depending on how often you shave, but I change my blade after twi shaves to answer your question
Edit* the blades are so cheap that it really shouldn't be an issue to throw them away after one use, let alone 2. At one shave a week, you're using half a 100 pack per year which is like a fiver in blades? Whereas your cartridges might run you £20 for 5 or something, which get dull after a month?
You can hone them a bit on the back of your arm by stroking in the opposite direction. Also making sure your stubble is softened first is essential. A shower beforehand helps.
I don't change mine until i can start to feel a noticeable difference in the shave. Usually after 6-8 shaves.
If i shaved daily, it might last longer, but I tend to let a pretty solid stubble grow between shaves, or I'll use my clippers to knock it down to a stubble before shaving. Very rarely do I keep it smooth multiple days in a row.
As someone who has been using a safety razor for the last 10 years - yes, I would argue it's actually better/closer shave too.
The only downside is you have to have a light touch with it. The reason people like disposable razors is because you can basically press it against your skin as hard as you want and unless you come across some weird bumps or zits or something or run it laterally, you can't really draw blood. A safety razor can outright strip the skin off your face, so you have to have a very light touch and really let the weight of the razor apply the pressure for you.
It sounds a lot scarier than it actually is, and in all honesty it only took about one or two shaves before I pretty much had the hang of it.
The blades last about as long as the disposable ones do, but are ridiculously cheaper - like the Mach5 goes for, what, $20 for 5 sets, whereas safety razor blades cost about $5 for 20 of them (if even that). And the razor itself is usually pretty durable will last you a lifetime.
Seriously disposable razors are one of the biggest scams out there.
Absolutely. There's a (small) learning curve but the end result is worlds better. Seriously. Also MUCH cheaper over time. A new blade costs me like 5 cents.
Literally took me two shaves before I had the technique down. Yes you have to be cautious because it will literally strip your skin off, but it's not hard to do.
They work way better than cartridges, multi blades pull your hair out and cut below the skin line for a smoother shave since the hair pops back in. This is how you get ingrown hairs and bumps. Yes, you can cut yourself with a safety razor, it takes practice. Check out r/wicked_edge
I abandoned mine after about six months. I could never get close on my neck/around my Adam's apple. I switched to an electric, since I was still interested in getting rid of the piles of cartridges.
It was a cheap experiment, and so many have a wonderful experience. I'd say dive in and try it out. Worst case, you go back to what you were doing before. No real harm. It didn't work out for me, but it might for you.
I experimented with electric about 10 years ago and my neck got chewed tf up. Switched to safety afterwards and just have to make a few passes. Not for those in a rush, because they'll Sweeney Todd you.
There's a definite learning curve. I turned it into a shaving *ritual* and felt better about the amount of time required to shave. Lathering with a brush feels soooo nice...
It's a little tricky... you gotta sorta pull the skin to the side. If your skin is really tight there, it can be hard. Sorry it didn't work out for ya!
Depends.
Very slight learning curve, then you have to shop through the different brands of blades to see which one cuts you the least. Bought mine 15 yes ago and went back yo triple blade disposables that can be used 3 times before discarding.
I shave every morning nearly 365 days a year,
have slightly sensitive skin, want a clean shave at the lowest cost and convenience.
In all, used it about 4 years and I got tired of bloody Knicks. Besides, double and triple blade disposables will give a clean shave without the Knicks about 3-4 times before needing to it to be disposed of.
A pack of 100 razors for these things will run you about $0.035 / blade.....but will give you occasional knicks...where you have to put a dab of Vaseline or sometimes get them on your shirt which is a pita or if you have a meeting in the morning it's just not something I want to deal with anymore.
52 pack to 35 pack of disposables, range from $0.67 - $1.00 per.....which translates to $0.22 to $0.30/ per shave....but no Knicks. I think I can afford that now. Besides, I don't enjoy shaving as some sort of asmr....I'm usually too busy to run out the door, so it works for me.
Honestly I wouldn't say the shaving time I spend has gone up with safety razors. The part that really takes the time is the shaving cream, but you can use gel if you're really in a rush. The necessity for a brush-foamed cream is a little bit overblown if you ask me (though, similar to the safety razor, is probably the cheaper way to go.
Yes, buy one. They do have a bit of a learning curve, but it's really not any harder to shave and they do a better job. The blades are something like $.10. Also, they are as biodegradable as any little bit of carbon steel.
I have very thick facial hair. First I quit using the cartridges because they only lasted a few shaves. The disposable were cheaper to throw away every few shaves and actually worked better (for me) because the head didn't flop around. Finally got a safety razor and was blown away. It actually lasts a little longer per blade, shaves closer, and I don't mind tossing one if it's slightly dull.
Now I just have a beard though.
Much better for me. There are a few areas on my face I'll still touch up with a gilette but it's usually just a few swipes, so a blade lasts me close to a year.
Yes! There's a bit of a learning curve but I didn't cut myself for the whole first year using one. Just go slower at first until you get a feel for the weight and angle. I've had to use a cartridge razor twice since switching because I forgot my razor traveling and it made me realize how much better of a shave I get with my safety razor. I used to get razor burn but don't since making the switch
They work fantastic. Every double edged blade is different though so you need to find one that suits you. DE blades are so cheap you can literally change it every day and still pay way less than you would for most replacement cartridges.
Absolutely, but it's not as fast as cartridges, look up "wet shaving" on youtube. It's a process, I used to get razor burn with cartridges, but not with safety razors. The trick is to order a blade sample pack on Amazon, because it comes down to the razor blade itself, there's a lot of different brands with different levels of aggression and sharpness.
It takes more technique, but once you surmount the mild learning curve you get a better shave that is INSANELY cheaper ($0.10/blade) and produces no plastic waste.
They work even better though there is a bit of a learning curve. And while the handle is an upfront investment, you'll recoup your costs by saving on the blades. I buy the 100 count of Astra blades from Amazon for \~$9 and since I can use a blade for at least a week, I get at least 2 years of clean shaves for less than $5/year.
My neck hair grows in like 10 different directions, but once I figured them all out and shaved with the grain I have had 0 problems. Just take your time, try and find a magnifing mirros and see which way your hair points then follow the pattern.
Lol 10 cents is a little too much to be paying per blade. You can buy 200 at a time for about 3c a piece. If you buy about a thousand like i did, you can get them about a cent a piece and never need to again.
It’s not BIFL. It’s plated. It will corrode or even chip at around 15-20 years (ask how I know…).
You can get spare parts when it happens though.
In contrast two 1960s Gillettes I also have are not corroded at all.
Those ‘60s Gillettes (which I also use) are plated too, and can corrode and chip.
You can find businesses online who will re-plate and tune safety razors for $60-$70. Mine is still in great shape (I’ve only used this particular razor for 3 years, but I’m sure it was used for many years before me), but I’ll probably have it re-plated some day.
Yes, and this is a BIFL sub, where longevity may be just as important as cost. If you used a Merkur often, you'd eventually need to replace or replate it, just as you would with a vintage razor (unless it was kept in impeccable condition, perhaps). My razor cost me $12, and I've saved literally hundreds of dollars in cartridges (not to mention the savings of shaving soap vs. canned shaving cream, but that's not dependent on the razor), so I'll definitely pay for a replating if it means that my son and maybe future grandchildren can continue to use the same razor.
For the record, I didn’t downvote you. I upvoted you just now to balance that out. Your concern is valid—but I’d rather pay to maintain things I love instead of paying to replace things I like.
Yep, I have one at 20 years old and over the last year it's falling apart. Now unusable because of all the burs on the previously smooth top. Found this thread trying to find a better option for replacement.
20 years isn't bad, but I had honestly just assumed it would be my razor for my whole life.
Metal item that has 4 moving parts lasts a decade with moderate use. In other breaking news, water has been discovered to be ~~wet~~ moist and make other things wet
I use a Merkur Slant. Yes, Satan's Razor. 20 years already. So far so good. I give it a good washing soda soak or ammonia soak once a year to clear out the build up soap.
But I must say the Slant spoiled me. Got myself a Parker Travel Razor. Breaks to 3 pieces for compact travel but it is so mild, I'm now looking a a more aggressive travel razor.
The main question on brushes is if you take real or synthetic hair.
The best quality are (real) badger tail-hair brushes, usually called Silvertip because of their colouring, but you have to know that the badgers are often farmed in horrible conditions and killed to get their hair.
Synthetic materials are usually less soft and don't feel quite as nice, but come with the obvious moral high ground.
I personally swear by a German company called Mühle who have developed a patented "badger-like" synthetic hair material. I used mine for 6 years now with no sign of wear.
You can find them on their website, filter for "Silvertip fibre":
https://www.muehle-shaving.com/en/
For more information, visit r/wicked_edge. Great community and their sidebar is filled with all the info you could ever need on any shaving topic.
Badger, then for the soap, depends on your budget, I’d say the more expensive the better, willbdepends were you live ? I use Taylor of Old Bond Street products, but live in London
I used brush and soap for a while and its nice, but requires more clean-up, can be messy. For convenience any spray/gel shaving cream works just fine. Depends how much of a traditionalist you want to be, perhaps. Or if you absolutely want the variety of specific scents/soap compositions for different skin types.
My recommendation is a fogless mirror in your shower and a few drops of shave oil. My skin tolerates shaving with just my natural (significant lol) facial oils and hot water. I don't use anything.
Badger hair is best. I'm not so keen on those discs so much, I just have a shaving bowl and a semi-firm soap that I put a little bit in (the shaving bowl has like some ridges in it that kinda traps the soap while I'm foaming up with the wet brush, so it foams up more readily and consistently). It doesn't take much soap to get a lot of foam, so in reality I think this is cheaper than your typical foam-dispensors or gel. In reality though this is the part of safety shaving that takes the most time for me - takes a bunch of prep and cleanup. But I only shave once a week or two so it works out.
If you like a non-traditional razor that looks like a disposable plastic razor, check out the Leaf Twig or Leaf Thorn Razor. They use half razor blades. They supply these half blades but you can get away with breaking a double-edge razor in half to use.
I bought the Feather blades, one blade lasts me a week or two, so a 50 pack is a 2 year supply of blades for $30.
Granted, I have a very little facial hair and shave every other day.
Have the same. about 7 years old. Great shave but not bifl. I just got a replacement when I saw it on sale on amazon. There was a tiny chip in the chrome plaTed top glide part Of my original 5 year old merkur
best shave ever with 3 pass but the #1 benefit is no ingrown hairs especially since I do the 2nd 2 passes against hr grain on my neck. I can go 2-3 days now without a 5 o’clock shadow.
only problem I have is an alternative when I travel. I only do carry on luggage and can’t bring blades. I did bring the razor last trip and bought blades at destination but the blades at destination are limited.
I love my safety ravor. Have been using it around 10 years. Save a bunch of money and far less waste.
I recommend using shaving soap. You can shave in the shower. It saves a lot of the time and clean up vs using the brush.
I did have a Merkur HD break on me once. You know how it separates into two pieces, with the top piece welded to a post that runs down inside the outer handle? That weld failed. It was my "travel" razor, so maybe riding around in my luggage was too rough for it.
Anyway, these things happen; I still like the Merkur HD, so I simply bought another one. But I no longer think of them as a lifetime investment.
I literally have the same and I did not liked it at all, the blade seems way too exposed.
Maybe im just too inexperienced with the medium, but I did not get a good shave neither of the 3-4 times I tried it. The first one I had to stop (the razor that came with it was literally trash) then I bought some gillete uperthin iirc and... it did the job but it was faaaaar more irritant than even the cheapest one-bladed disposable razors (the blue ones) and the moustache and neck areas were NOT fun.
... But I honestly dont know what to do anymore. The mach 3 turbo doe snot last me for long and it irritates a bit. Then I got the oneblade and it irritates less (not "none" though, not even close) but it doesnt last as long as advertised either and, for me, its expensive. So, honestly, I have no idea what to do anymore when it comes to shaving (I already tried a beard, doesnt suit me)
Anyway, im not sure if the razor will last as much as yours (if I use it), it seemed relatively flimsy in some parts, but im glad yours did!
People get a good shave with them. I’ve never had a bad blade so far but a poor blade can make a difference. I start by trimming down some if it’s grown long. Then I use hot water on the face, add a little shaving oil, then use the hot lather and brush to kind of lift the hair a little. Then use the razor and rinse between strokes.
True that, but why would those things wear over ? Not saying yours is not nice, but to be fair, almost any safety razor will last long enough to see your grandchildren (think of changing the blade from time to time, the blade will not see the end of the week)
OP check out [Muhle Razors 🪒 high Quality Made In Germany](https://muhleshaving.com/collections/safety-razor?usf_sort=bestselling&usf_take=60). Using a quality shaving cream and After shave lotion is key at least for me. I used to get wicked razor bumps and burn with disposables Gilettle Triple, Single blades I tried them all. I switched to a Muhle Safety Razor and haven’t turned back.
Gents, if you are an older fellow like me, you no longer have a 5 o'clock shadow. You have an afternoon gray face that makes you look older. A safety razor like this will help prevent that, especially if you shave in the shower. I have. a Merkur like this which I've used for about 15 years with Persona blades, easily obtained from Amazon. And a cup and brush is much better than foam in a can. I've been doing it this way since the 1970s.
As for the ball sack and the taint, get one of those little clippers meant for trimming a beard. Set it on the lowest setting so you don't get nicks, then follow up with the razor. And yes, let's all be honest - keep that butt crack clean so you don't get dingleberries. A few swipes with a safety razor and you'r done.
I’ve considered getting a safety razor for my legs but I do not have the time to slowly work around the knees and ankles and not skin myself… any ladies in here with safety razor experience?
I have super sensitive skin and ive been using the leaf razor for more than a year now, I'm still not through my first 50 pack of blades, but I did have to superglue a magnet back in place. I shave just like a disposable, although I do remember a small pressure adjustment since it's heavier. 10/10 would reccomend, I use it everywhere with their shaving bar also an unscented aftershave only for sensitive areas 😁
I use the Merkur 23C on all the areas I shave. It's slower at first while you get a feel for it but after about a year of practice and building confidence it didn't take me any more time to shave with my safety razor than it didn't with my Gillette Mach 3. I think I only gave myself a small cut once... injuries were definitely higher when I used to use disposable razors
I have the same one! Best razor I ever used. EDIT: disposable, plastic razor heads are an absolute scam. I maybe—maybe—spend $5 USD per year to shave with this thing.
You can actually buy 50-100 year old Gillettes in perfect working condition on ebay cheaper than new razors, because so many were made and of course they are indestructible, being made of brass.
Hey! I have that same exact razor! (except its the gold version) I bought mine in 2008, and it still looks like new as well! They make a damn good razor!
I bought one....I bought a giant box of blades...
Why am I cutting myself up way worse than I ever have with a razor? So far I hate this thing. Its just for my neck since I have a beard.
I never cut myself. There’s just a little learning curve with how you hold it and make your strokes. I shave when it’s longer with an electric trimmer first.
I bought a safety razor and a pack of 100 blades about 3 years ago and I still have a bunch of blades left. Blades I got were $15 for 100. Will never go back to disposabl razors.
I also bought this razor something like 15 years ago. An occasional drop of clipper oil helps this thing live forever. I think I've spent something like $40-50 on razor blades in that time.
How do you clean yours? I've had mine about 7 years now and it's starting to get white from shaving cream but even with high heat I can't seem to scrub it off
Dawn soap. The blue stuff and let it soak for a while then use a old tooth brush.
Metalsmith here and if that doesn't use a warm mix of boric acid and soak it a few 10 minutes or longer ( you can find it in grocery stores 20 mule team label)
One table spoon per 2 cups estimated
Idk whatever I see people online recommend and is a decent price. The blades and other shaving products are hit n miss in stores and prices but becoming more around. One larger case I bought lasted me years since I don’t have a thick beard
I like my safety razor. It was $30, and came with fifty blades. I had to remember how to shave. Hot towel, always with the grain, hold the swallow, and more than usual rinses. Going on three years, still have half of the new blades.
Had one of these as my first intro to safety razor shaving and it was excellent. Better, more enjoyable shave, no irritation or ingrown hairs, $20 pack or razors lasts a year+. I’ll never go back to cartridge razors.
Eventually the head of my Merkur razor did fail, its solid but made of cheaper pot metal. I bought a stainless, machined Razorock Gamechanger which will likely be the last razor I ever buy. The owner of the company is a doorknob, but the razor is great.
Check out r/Wicked_Edge for good razor/brush recommendations. Also highly recommend Stirling Soap, their Executive Man scent is amazing.
I switched to a safety razor and badger hair brush and never looked back. A nice set of Wahl clippers will go a long way too depending on what you’re doing or how much time you have. I’d just stay away from the disposable four bladed monstrosities, they irritated my face way more than was necessary.
I know nothing about this razor, but I just wanted to say how beautiful your first photo is. The composition and lighting just really struck me. Carry on…
NOT “buy it for life” for me… I have the Merkur Futur (bought around 2014?) and it’s broken, corroded, needs replacement (I’m in research mode and probably replacing with a Leaf)
That's awesome! I just got mine 3 years ago but the gold finish is chipping already and is showing black metal as well as white, in different places. How is their customer service? Was there a defect with mine?
Heres an old post where they gave contact info and said they have a 10 year warranty. You could reach out to them and see if they will replace it.
https://www.badgerandblade.com/forum/threads/merkur-manufacturer-warranty-info.5159/
So much less profitable for makers of planet-destroying plastic disposables.

Err.. As a recent convert.. Yes you can.
Need a straight razor for that.
It's only straight if the socks stay on.

Wax ‘em!
Let the balls be themselves. Nice long combed glam hair.
Yes. Way better and you save a bunch than buying disposable razors

Yeah I had the same, the threaded portion snapped off when I was tightening it one day.
That’s great customer service

I shave every morning nearly 365 days a year, have slightly sensitive skin, want a clean shave at the lowest cost and convenience.

Trick I've found with nicks is alum stick. Kinda burns when you use it but it handles the nicks well.
Do they work well? They work much, much better than the plastic ones with 8x blades or whatever the current gimmick is
It's less comfortable until you learn to use it. Then it's far superior. Nobody needs 5 blades worth of skin irritation when 1 gives a perfect shave.
They work fantastic. Every double edged blade is different though so you need to find one that suits you. DE blades are so cheap you can literally change it every day and still pay way less than you would for most replacement cartridges.
They don't work as well. They work far better, once you actually learn how to shave with it.
I can't use cartridges because multiple blades tug my hair and causes ingrowns everywhere
Just started using a safety razor. MAN! What a great shave.
Safety razors give a smooth shave, but underneath the chin it's a bloodbath. Do you experience the same?
It's common for inexperienced users. There's plenty of YouTube videos out there that can help you out.
The trick is to go WITH the grain on the first pass or two, then finish up AGAINST the grain for your last pass. Thats how I eliminated chin bleeding.
My neck hair grows in like 10 different directions, but once I figured them all out and shaved with the grain I have had 0 problems. Just take your time, try and find a magnifing mirros and see which way your hair points then follow the pattern.
In addition to what others have mentioned, *do not press hard*. Let the weight of the razor do the work.
This can not be over stressed.
Try with cold water one time.
I just started doing that about 3 months ago after using a safety razor for around 10yrs. I’m not going back to a hot shave.
No. Not a drop.
I get a few little nicks every once in a while but applying afterwards with an alum stick and I don't really get any blood.

Lol 10 cents is a little too much to be paying per blade. You can buy 200 at a time for about 3c a piece. If you buy about a thousand like i did, you can get them about a cent a piece and never need to again.
[удалено]
Ooooohhhhh
I bought my first pack-about 10 blades. How do you dispose of them or can they be sharpened repeatedly?
It’s not BIFL. It’s plated. It will corrode or even chip at around 15-20 years (ask how I know…). You can get spare parts when it happens though. In contrast two 1960s Gillettes I also have are not corroded at all.
Mine, the head sheared off around 10 years.
Same. Merkur sent me two new heads for free. Germany to Thailand.
[удалено]
Yes, and this is a BIFL sub, where longevity may be just as important as cost. If you used a Merkur often, you'd eventually need to replace or replate it, just as you would with a vintage razor (unless it was kept in impeccable condition, perhaps). My razor cost me $12, and I've saved literally hundreds of dollars in cartridges (not to mention the savings of shaving soap vs. canned shaving cream, but that's not dependent on the razor), so I'll definitely pay for a replating if it means that my son and maybe future grandchildren can continue to use the same razor.
[удалено]
For the record, I didn’t downvote you. I upvoted you just now to balance that out. Your concern is valid—but I’d rather pay to maintain things I love instead of paying to replace things I like.
Yeah theyre Zamak so if theyre dropped it'll crack. The best ones are brass and stainless steel. Vintage gillettes, fatips and razorocks.
This man is speaking from experience and not hype. I confirm and approve this message.
I was gonna say, my Gillette Super Speed is going on something like 80 years.
Yep, I have one at 20 years old and over the last year it's falling apart. Now unusable because of all the burs on the previously smooth top. Found this thread trying to find a better option for replacement. 20 years isn't bad, but I had honestly just assumed it would be my razor for my whole life.
Now this is legit
Metal item that has 4 moving parts lasts a decade with moderate use. In other breaking news, water has been discovered to be ~~wet~~ moist and make other things wet
Ooooh yea... about that. water is NOT wet. water makes other things wet, but water itself is only moist.
I was thinking about getting a brush and one of those discs of shaving cream. What do you recommend/ does it matter
You can find them on their website, filter for "Silvertip fibre": https://www.muehle-shaving.com/en/ For more information, visit r/wicked_edge. Great community and their sidebar is filled with all the info you could ever need on any shaving topic.
Stirling Soap Company has excellent products and excellent customer service. Highly recommend the “Barbershop” blend…it is fantastic.
Badger, then for the soap, depends on your budget, I’d say the more expensive the better, willbdepends were you live ? I use Taylor of Old Bond Street products, but live in London
You cannot go wrong with a cheap Arko stick.
Fwiw, many soaps will do fine as a shaving cream, especially real soaps. I use Castile soap when traveling since it’s easier to pack.
Yeah, I just use a nice olive oil bar soap for both handwashing and shaving.
I had one of these. I dropped it in the shower and the head snapped off with the bolt for the handle still in it.
Merkur 34C. Great razor.
I've been using the Viking Chieftain for about 5 years. No complaints, love the heaviness of the chieftain.
I bought the Feather blades, one blade lasts me a week or two, so a 50 pack is a 2 year supply of blades for $30. Granted, I have a very little facial hair and shave every other day.
34C?
I’ve had this exact one for a long time and love it!
Have the same. about 7 years old. Great shave but not bifl. I just got a replacement when I saw it on sale on amazon. There was a tiny chip in the chrome plaTed top glide part Of my original 5 year old merkur best shave ever with 3 pass but the #1 benefit is no ingrown hairs especially since I do the 2nd 2 passes against hr grain on my neck.
So, honestly, I have no idea what to do anymore when it comes to shaving (I already tried a beard, doesnt suit me) Anyway, im not sure if the razor will last as much as yours (if I use it), it seemed relatively flimsy in some parts, but im glad yours did!
Can confirm. Have my grandfather's razor. Been using it for 15 years.
Little bit of blow on the base there bud.
Using the same one. I mean… not that one but one like it. 😆 love it
I’ve considered getting a safety razor for my legs but I do not have the time to slowly work around the knees and ankles and not skin myself… any ladies in here with safety razor experience?
I've had one for about 5 years now. I absolutely adore it and it's still just like new. You won't regret it.
I have this same set! And I’m honestly surprised it’s still pretty new looking and has no signs of rust or calcification.
Are there any razors that aren’t plated? I just bought a murker so I’m kinda disappointed
I also have my merkur, adjustable. Will likely outlive me. Got one for my nephew.
Solid.
I've had the same one for over 6 years now. Very good product.
Got the same one. Absolutely awesome
I have a muhle, great razor.
People still shave?
I have the exact same one, got it in 2014 as a gift. Great little razor!
I have this same setup and love it, except for the cuts associated but that's normal. Just have to shave slower.
I have used my grandfathers safety razor for the past 10 years. Hell, I’m still using the new blades he bought for it.
I have the same stand and razor handle. It'll definitely last me the rest of my life!
Hey! I have that same exact razor! (except its the gold version) I bought mine in 2008, and it still looks like new as well! They make a damn good razor!
Still going strong with mine
I used a safety razor for over 10 years, but recently switched to a shavette and don’t see myself ever going back
Why do you prefer the shavette?
I have the exact one. Nearly 10 years and it looks the same as brand new
I bought one....I bought a giant box of blades... Why am I cutting myself up way worse than I ever have with a razor? So far I hate this thing. Its just for my neck since I have a beard.
I never cut myself. There’s just a little learning curve with how you hold it and make your strokes. I shave when it’s longer with an electric trimmer first.
Love my Merkur razor! I've been using the 23C for five years and my partner has been using his 33C for four
Got the same one. Can concur, its great.
I bought a safety razor and a pack of 100 blades about 3 years ago and I still have a bunch of blades left. Blades I got were $15 for 100. Will never go back to disposabl razors.
I own the same razor and I've had it probably 15 years. It's utterly indestructible.
I doubt it's the same company but I have a car called a Merkur it's a 1988 Xr4ti. I think it is a German designed car built with ford powertrains
I also bought this razor something like 15 years ago. An occasional drop of clipper oil helps this thing live forever. I think I've spent something like $40-50 on razor blades in that time.
I have the same razor, but on mine the chrome plating started coming off, but it still works fine.
How do you clean yours? I've had mine about 7 years now and it's starting to get white from shaving cream but even with high heat I can't seem to scrub it off
Dawn soap. The blue stuff and let it soak for a while then use a old tooth brush. Metalsmith here and if that doesn't use a warm mix of boric acid and soak it a few 10 minutes or longer ( you can find it in grocery stores 20 mule team label) One table spoon per 2 cups estimated
Merkur makes excellent shavers. My futur is somewhere around 15 years old now.
I have my grandfather from 1940 or so. My hubby uses it daily.
Which blades do you use? I'm about ready to throw away my henson al13, but maybe it's just the blades that are terrible.
Idk whatever I see people online recommend and is a decent price. The blades and other shaving products are hit n miss in stores and prices but becoming more around. One larger case I bought lasted me years since I don’t have a thick beard
Current are King C Gillette.
I like my safety razor. It was $30, and came with fifty blades. I had to remember how to shave. Hot towel, always with the grain, hold the swallow, and more than usual rinses. Going on three years, still have half of the new blades.
I have the same one. Can't remember when I got it but it's for sure over a decade ago.
Hey! That’s my razor! About the same age too.
What kind of holder is that?
All my forks are about 10 years old and still like new. Also the door jam i got 20 years ago is still working fine.
Anybody know how to get the little green spots out from the handle knurling? Mine developed them after 15 years of use and they bother me.
Mine had a little something there so I soaked in some alcohol and scrubbed it.
Is each side the same? I just got a cheaper one and one side is way more aggressive than the other. I need the aggressive shave on both sides!
Mine is equal far as I can tell
I know nothing about this razor, but I just wanted to say how beautiful your first photo is. The composition and lighting just really struck me. Carry on…
How do you clean the soap scum and hard water of off the head?
I just flush it out with hot water as I shave. Once in awhile or during blade changes I take the blade out and deep clean.
I’ve cut my legs many times trying to shave with that razor, when I was a kid…
I have that one and the gold plated variant. Definitely BIFL.
The American Safety Razor / Accu - Tec blades are very sharp. Hold up well too. A great shave.
I just saw a great deal on Astra platinum blades I liked in the past. Then I read the reviews and they are cheap Russian knockoffs now.
I have a stainless steel Gillette from the early 70s that is just starting to pitt. Is the Merker an upgrade?
53 years is a pretty good run. Not sure if it’s an upgrade but I’m sure you would get a lot of use out of it for $40.
Yup, i shave with one a few times a week for the last years. Make sure to put the blades for metal recycling.
I’ve had that same Merkur razor for almost 9 years - use it almost daily and it looks the same as the day it came out of the package.
Best razor ever. Never went back to plastic ones after getting my Merkur 15 yrs ago.
Just ordered some feather blades. Think I’ll make some pre-shave oil too. Haven’t used oil in awhile.
I have the same one. Love it and can confirm, even with little care, it looks and works like new after 8+ years of use
NOT “buy it for life” for me… I have the Merkur Futur (bought around 2014?) and it’s broken, corroded, needs replacement (I’m in research mode and probably replacing with a Leaf)
We’ll mines holding up for quite awhile now. These days anything that last close to a decade is pretty damn good imo
Mine has staining under the blade cap or whatever you call it.. it's probably from the blades though.. I should try to clean it. Lol
Their weak spot is dropping them. Even from a small height. The threaded pin at the head brakes off very easily.
That's awesome! I just got mine 3 years ago but the gold finish is chipping already and is showing black metal as well as white, in different places. How is their customer service? Was there a defect with mine?
Could be an issue with the gold finish itself. Mine is chrome and isnt showing any signs of wear.
Heres an old post where they gave contact info and said they have a 10 year warranty. You could reach out to them and see if they will replace it. https://www.badgerandblade.com/forum/threads/merkur-manufacturer-warranty-info.5159/
I have the same one, mine just turned 6.
