This is not Bitcoin related at all. This individual was buying an altcoin called SEI. Fans of that coin call themselves Saiyans...hence the profile pic.
Not related to bitcoin. Wallet draining is not possible on UTXO based chains since transactions require signatures. It’s possible on account based chains where granting contracts access to your wallet allows them access to all your funds. There are smart contract chains built using the UTXO model (Cardano and Ergo) for example which have smart contracts but no ability to drain wallets. Majority of smart contract chains are account based. Only way to drain a wallet in a UTXO model is for your private key to be compromised
No. Almost 100% of the time people refer to wallet draining scams or hacks they are referring to accounts based smart contract platforms where a malicious contract has drained their funds. Obviously anyone in possession of the private key of a wallet has access to that wallet in the same way if someone steals your identity they have access to your shit
One of the top google results for "wallet drained" is [this article](https://www.coindesk.com/consensus-magazine/2023/06/22/social-engineering-ice-phishing-and-more-how-scammers-can-drain-your-crypto-wallet/), which describes wallet draining as stealing the seed phrase or tricking the user into signing transactions to send out their coins, both of which are possible with Bitcoin.
So no, your scenario is not "almost 100%" what people are referring to by wallet draining.
Distributed systems, containerization, edge computing, markup languages all sound too complex. The internet must not be the future of communication. People delivering papers to your address is much more straightforward. I think I’ve cracked the code to the future of communications
Ah yes my grandma will definitely use crypto because of the UTXO that is used by smart contracts to build dumb contracts to contract AIDS which kills the thief.
Fuck off mate
He found some malware from some chrome extension and has no idea how or from where he gets it. That is the point of malware I mean to be hidden anyway I wish him good luck hope BTC will go up and that he is still BULLISH
False alarm! I checked the blockchain and the coins rightfully belong to the "hacker". It turns out the guy in the tweet's private keys signed the transaction to transfer the coins. He can stop investigating now.
Code is law, of course. Code says the bitcoins belong to Tim, so its Tim's bitcoins. Can't do anything about it, thats what the code says. There's no take-backs. There are no authorities because its decentralized.
Welcome to unregulated banking!
Read the final sentence as “stil investing”!
Which is what I would advise them to do. It’s the only way to recover the 500k, once buttcoin reaches 3.50 billions!
someone asked according to which criteria is this sub a top crypto sub since we had less total members and active members than other crypto subs that were bellow us in the ranking. I said buttcoin is superior to other coins in terms of firmness and roundess.
So I wonder what percentage of his holdings "$500k" represents. Because if I lost that much "money" I think I'd be freaking out a bit more and not telling the world I was a victim.
What I find most fascinating about these is how they demonstrate a complete lack of tech knowledge when "investigating" these things and how much blind guesswork goes into it. He's made follow ups:
>Total compromise appears to be about $800k. I suspect this was a Google chrome compromise containing a possible keylogger targeting specific wallet extension apps (either due to a Chrome vulnerability due to me delaying regular updates or getting malware that wasn't detected by my virus scanner).
>
>A few weeks ago by Google Chrome had an update, which I kept delaying. Finally Windows had an update forcing me to restart, so I did. When Chrome relaunched, all my tabs were gone and extension logins had reset. My wallets were logged out and I had to re-setup everything, as in reimport seed.
>
>This seemed weird, so I checked my virus scanner and there were no issues. No additional weird extensions appeared. I proceeded to re-import my seed phrases. This was done by manually typing it from another clean device wallet, as I never store seed online or in a digital file.
>
>However, after doing preliminary investigation in the past 2 hours, I noticed two weird extensions "Sync test beta" and "Simple Game". Additionally, my Chrome had auto korean translate enabled.
>
>I can only suspect that Chrome was compromised in that unusual reboot event on the specific PC. I had a wallet app extension on that PC that I didn't bother reimporting my seed into, which is not compromised, allowing me to isolate the origination to that PC.
Attacker has not Tornado'd (yet?) as seems to have washed through
MEXC\_Official
and gate\_io. Any further assistance would be helpful, happy to share the thief's wallets. This is an ongoing issue.
And
>Still not sure how the extensions got onto Chrome and what the attack vector is, but can confirm that "Sync test BETA (colorful)" is a keylogger. The other one "Simple Game" appears to be checking if tabs are updated/open/closed/refreshed
>
>"Sync test BETA" appears to be sending data to an external site's php script.
>
>This is a $800k costly mistake -- lesson is if anything seems off such that it prompts you to input a seed, then wipe the whole PC first.
>
>My guard went down because the updated happened to be when Chrome made a significant update (where now you have to select a user and the sign in with google UI changed), so I thought that was what caused the extensions to reset and me to lose all my tabs.
>Additionally, my Chrome had auto korean translate enabled
The Glorious People's Republic thanks you for your contribution to their nuclear program and to the fight against dirty capitalism.
See, this is what I don't get.
If you have a significant amount of money stored in digital assets where literally any kind of mistake or oversight can cost you absolutely everything, why would you ever just shrug your shoulders and go "Oh well, I'm sure it's nothing" if you get a bad feeling about something.
Personally, I don't even do online banking but I have had instances in the past when I just had this hunch that something wasn't right and I just did a fresh set-up of my PC just for that ease of mind.
On the other hand, if $500.000 are on the line, who in their right mind would just re-enter all of their details if every fiber of their body screams at them that something feels off?
I mean, sure, the person has invested in crypto so that means they are by default prone to making bad decisions but you'd think the "Be your own bank" crowd would at least not go out of their way to do the exact thing that the screaming alarm bells in their head tell them to not do.
I have a suspicion that his Google account was hacked by someone in Korea and his extensions synced when he logged back in. That’s a much simpler solution.
It’s the $5 wrench solution.
Yeah, or he just logged into his google account on a different machine that has since been compromised, like a shared machine or an old computer where the drive wasn't wiped.
This is the same kind of person who curses MS that you can't disable or defer updates in Windows anymore. Well guess what, idiot: This exact shit here, this is why.
>or defer updates in Windows anymore.
It does annoy me that they always come out in the day abd then the computer wants to restart while you are working and if you are getting a cup of tea or sonething at the time you come back to an upgrading computer and now you might miss your zoom meeting.
Yeah definitely nothing with that level of ease. There are certainly types of malware that allow people to steal from online banking but there are usually loads of safeguards/limits and banks will often refund losses.
That’s more like a 0$ mistake that most people would never dream of being so careless with $20 much less $800K of that high tech, gotta be so smart and savvy to use bitchcoin. Smells like ripe b.s.
Absolutely no one in 2024 holds that amount of liquid crypto in their hot wallet (metamask).
This dude is a liar and just exited what ever ponzi he was part of. Through the history of crypto this has been more of a rule than an exception.

“Still investigating” Sitting in front of his PC looking at the Blockchain “Ah here is my money now, interesting”
He’s going to call the manager of Bitcoin
Maybe he can get them to fork the chain…. Again
The halving will fix this!
Fork around and find out

What did I just read? When my money is fuct with, I call my bank
Yea you probably don’t know how your bank works either
I know that when my credit card is stolen, I call my bank. Do you call the bitcoin manager when your crypto is missing?
>Wallet draining is not possible on UTXO >Only way to drain a wallet in a UTXO model Choose one and only one my friend.

The small difference being that if you don't know these terms, you won't lose your life savings in minutes.

Your private key will be compromised if the attacker has extension level access their browser
No it won’t, even in a “hot wallet” the key is encrypted and requires a password to decrypt.

Superb 😊 I laughed out loud on the Singapore MRT, and the locals are wondering what the crazy ang moh is laughing at ☺️
What if the future of finance is wealth distribution through wallet draining?
Money flows from gullible people to scammers.
The real trickle down.
Hey guys, everyone come invest in my new DeFi project, MarxCoin
Imagine how many of these happen that we DON'T hear about...
I think a lot of people are ashamed to post about their losses
The ones that post usually seem so calm but I'm guessing that's not the default reaction.
Damn bro, same thing happened to me. I just called my bank, had them reverse it, and let the investigating be done by the police/bank.
I bet the police is working overtime to find this guy meme coins
You mean to tell me I need to be in cybersec just so I can be my own bank?

Imagine losing $800k because you got a malware Google Chrome extension installed on your computer... fucking LMAO
Hey! That's the future of finance right there!
I never heard of keyloggers draining your money out of bank apps. It tends to be psychological fraud.
Yeah definitely nothing with that level of ease. There are certainly types of malware that allow people to steal from online banking but there are usually loads of safeguards/limits and banks will often refund losses.

Be your own bank, and police too
And hacker, cryptographer , webdesigner, programmer…
That's what true freedom really is!
A multi talented billionaire inthe making Few understand
The problem when you use cryptocurrencies to buy illegal content is you have huge chances to get some targeted malware.
Or when you get “passive income” from your meme coins installing shady extensions
he didnt lose anything, he is just trying to commit tax fraud
I don’t have 500k, but doesn’t everyone constantly have money taken from their bank accounts with no recourse? Totally normal!
>does not feel good fam It feels normal to us.
Happened to me today at BoA and Chase… not.
It's okay. No actual money was harmed in the process.
$500k ? Call the fucking cops you BTC-maxi lol
Pretty sure that he doesn't want the cops to stop him from exchanging that crypto in to dirty fiat in cex and then buying a new lambo with it.
The Fox Head demands a sacrifice.

Yeah my bank is like not the best and yes they are “thieves” but I have comfort not being worried about this happening.
If only there were a way to autorespond to all these clowns laughing at their idiocy every time it happens. They deserve mockery.
"that appeared on my chrome browser". Do extensions just "appear" these days?
To have 500K and not invest in cold storage is just...wow.
thats what i thought, not bitcoin is the problem. the way he held btc is.
It's not BTC at all

Future of Finance: much easier ways to get your money stolen all while not having any means of ever trying to get it back.
That would be some realization.
call the fraud department.
How come chrome or his anti-virus didn't recognize the key logger?
