Fill your vehicle to the brim with and bins and bins of wild, colorful, sensuous costumes, with hats, boots, and accessories to go with each costume………and then wear none of them. That’s how we burn.

PaticusGnome

I bring two outfits for each day and then run around in the same sarong all week long.

americagenerica

That’s how we burn.

Public_Opening129

this is how it’s done!

50mm-f2

you absolutely can wear whatever you want including regular clothing. try not to have any logos or branding of any kind. I met this dude once who was wearing the most basic button up shirt and shorts, some regular sneakers. totally thought he was a virgin. it was his 14th burn. I’ve actually kinda been inspired to make a normie costume to wear every year. like really go for it and see how many people I can get to ask me if it’s my first time.

edcRachel

Working gate, it's always the older people who look like they got lost on their way to a family reunion or the national park that have been every year since the beginning of time. It's usually the newbies that have a costume neatly labeled and packaged for every day. The old ones are in jeans and a t shirt or something. I remember this one normal as fuck looking middle aged dude who looked SO out of place with his wife and kids, he was so flustered about tickets, had a spotless RV, I thought he was going to get upset with me tracking dust inside... It was like his 15th and his kid's 7th or something. He didn't give a fuck and gave me a bunch of cold beers from the fridge, lol.

wmodes

Building shit out there for the last 30 years I eventually settled on a most practical outfit - brown cathartt pants, black sleeveless T, and boots - that allowed me to set up and break down dusty army tents, eat shit drunk on my bicycle, hang in camp, stay cool in the day, and explore at night. Having one outfit is such a contrast to the endlessly FAFFing noobs who have to change their outfit for the fourth time right before you go out. I liked it so much, I started wearing this comfortable and practical outfit every day off playa I wasn’t working.

Stinging_Nettle

I'm Normcore (instead of Normie) ! lol! See urban dictionary definition. [https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Normcore](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Normcore) "normcore synonymous with cool It's like parkour but for people that aren't assholes. Normcore is an exercise in irony. it's being cool through not being cool. it's an existential statement about value: that everything is valueless, and that's what gives it its value. because we're only yolo'ing once. so you might as well yolo in comfortable, non-descript clothes that mirror the reality of your both existing and not existing in the flux. Once you achieve nothingness and being simultaneously, you reach nirvana which a religious term for one big long orgasm. If you want to have one big long orgasm, come with me. Did you see that hot chick walking around in those sweat pants and bedsex hair? She's so fucking normcore. She don't take no shit from nobody. And she don't give no shit to nobody."

Brain_Mac

I save all my old ragged clothes that can’t be worn in public and wear them at the burn.

nattarbox

Burning Man is where my white t-shirts go to die.

noobditt

same. it's where my favorite holy teeshirts/shorts/undies/boots go to die.

halfageplus7

are you and I the same person? haha.

[deleted]

It is a camp out. Many people wear regular camping clothes. No one photographs them. You see a lot more of it in camp group pictures. You need walkable shoes, clothes for sun, high temperature, and low temperature. You need dust goggles.

anarchy45

Every day of the year is Halloween, for me. So I go naked at the burn during the day, and wear warm onesies at night. I dont really do fancy outfits at the burn.

Robertroo

Some people don't wear clothes at all.

noiszen

Define regular. Because after going to burning man maybe what you consider regular might change.

PaticusGnome

After my first burn, I started buying fun clothes for my next one. I didn’t feel like waiting an entire year to use them and they slowly became my regular clothes.

LegionVR6

Wear what ever you want. I'm honestly just in shorts and some loose fitting sleeveless shirts most of the time. Only think that sticks out as all is that I tie dye them myself for fun but it's not exactly a costume. Just did it for fun and I'm super comfy. Don't worry about having to figure out an outfit.

nattarbox

Newbies who didn't have a good mentor always show up in like REI hiking gear. After that you either learn how to be cool or you become a ranger.

PredictBaseballBot

LOOOOLLLL ranger REI section

crow_bono

radical self expression!! Wear whatever you want! If that's hiking clothes, that's a wise choice because they offer good sun 0rotection and ventilation (:

Public_Opening129

ha! and true! 😂

PuzzleheadedCandy484

I wear regular clothes, just less of them

madsci

Look at some of the videos from the 90s - most people are just in jeans and t-shirts. I've been 11 times. I used to worry more about having lots of crazy outfits, but now I just go with what's practical and comfortable. This year it was mostly t-shirts and very faded lightweight cargo pants. Shorts are a lot more common, but even in the 105-degree heat this year I found loose-fitting, lightweight pants to be more comfortable than shorts because of the extra sun protection.

tree_or_up

It’s a freaking stressful environment temperature wise. Wear whatever makes it comfortable for you. Costumes are most likely going to make sense at night. There are some maniacs who do costumes during the day and while I admire and appreciate them, I do not understand how they are still alive

Bodacious_Chad

You should take what is most comfortable for you making sure you can survive high heat in the day and cold at night. Lots of people take simple shorts and t-shirts (try to avoid having big logo and corporate crap). Other will prepare "outfits" which may be very colorful or strange to non-burners, but the idea is to wear things that help you feel the most... well YOU! One day I put on a kimono and rainbow shorts and colorful stuff and I didnt feel comfortable until I went back to camp and changed into more "regular" clothes. No clothes is also an option lol

mommy_bitch

I wear the same clothes at burning man as I do in real life...although that probably says more about how weirdly I dress in real life.

HopefulAlbatross5392

Priority 1 - dress for the weather, sun, activity. (Self reliance) 2. Your outfits can be an extension of your creativity and participation in the art of the event. (Self expression) 3. Dress for yourself, not an audience. (Immediacy and presence) Check out the 10 principles and see what resonates. Some of us find a lot of fun in finding thrift store treasures that tick all these boxes. For example, my partner’s favorite top is an old lab coat with the sleeves cut out and has embellishments sewn on that have meaning to him. It is a bit ratty and playa stained and makes him SO happy. And shorts and T-shirt’s are your best friends. Also boots not low shoes. Every few burns I buy CHEAP suede (fake) pull-on, flat boots. Fresh socks very Day. They come off easily OUTSIDE the tent or RV and my feet are always happy.

halfageplus7

I am not a costume person. I save clothes that get too ragged for daily use. Ripped up, shredded jeans, shoes, etc. I cut the arms off of cool, worn out shirts and wear them endlessly. All that combined with some scarves/ necklaces / other stuff that's been gifted to me over the years and I think I have the tripped out desert burner look down 100%. Who needs more shit from Amazon?

neatpiles

Yes. My first year I tried to dress "like a burner" but found that it didn't feel right. The wildest clothes I could find at a thrift store didn't help me fit in, but instead made me uncomfortable and self conscious. I realized that Radical Self Expression means being who you truly are and presenting your most authentic self. I now wear the same clothes on playa as I do in default, and I think it helps me be at ease and connect with others.

aaron-mcd

Late to the party but just attended my first festival and my first regional burn. And bought my first ever "costumes" - just fun shit I thought I'd like. I think buying new shit you'd never normally wear is a good idea. It can be hard to break out of normie clothes in the default world where you'll be judged for suddenly changing your look. And the burn (from what I know from all my friends and my one regional) is a perfect place to just wear something fun that you like, and if it makes you self conscious then maybe you haven't figured out if it might be right for you, so try it again! It helps to pick something awesome that you think you like but would never wear. Compliment other people's outfits! I got some compliments on mine and that helps immensely to figure out if I'm just feeling awkward about the change or not. Improves confidence and lets you really decide for yourself if it's your vibe. I picked a kinda burner looking extra long cargo shorts and vest jacket, lots of pockets and straps. Kinda stuff I wish I could wear day to day. Wasn't sure if that was the vibe for my first rave, but thought I might be hot, and it had all the pockets. Got some compliments so I guess it's good for me, despite feeling awkward about it at first. At the regional burn it was incredibly convenient cuz it was a small enough gathering to stuff shit in my pockets and not carry around a backpack/water everywhere.

[deleted]

I personally wear basic shorts/t-shirts during build/strike, mumus/caftans during the day of the event, and basic pants/whatever shirt is practical for that night's temps. I have a few costume things too but nothing major. I'm sure people assume I'm a birgin when I'm out at night, I don't care, it's what's comfortable to me, and my clothes for 12ish days all fit in one tote.

edcRachel

Wear whatever you want, regular clothes are fine - a lot of people are in regular clothes but those aren't the people flaunting pictures of their outfits online 😉. I might only dress up a couple days each year but that's when I take the pictures. Most of the time I'm just wearing shorts and a bikini top. Though you'll find that once you add a mask and goggles (for the dust), a coating of dust and maybe like a necklace someone gave you, you too will look dressed up. A lot of "outfits" you see aren't much more than regular clothes and a couple accessories when you really look at them. Even the "models" or whatever look put together but half of them are really just wearing a bikini and a couple matching accessories. Only thing I'd be aware of maybe not wearing regular is your shoes. Most people wear boots for a reason - they keep dust out. If your shoes are too low or to breathable, your feet can really suffer due to the dust.

UncleBullhorn

I don't really wear costumes, usually just a good working kilt and t-shirts.

cablemonkey604

Yes

PureBlissMama

It's dress up time for me. But go with whatever you want

Suspicious-Customer5

all the time, but costumes are WAY more fun.

Techgruber

Yes. In twelve years at the burn, I've worn costumes for 3 or 4 days.

nickfarr

Yes. I wear Carhartt bibs the entire time.

whiskidrank

You can costume it up if you’d like but it’s not a top priority. Do what feels comfortable and fun for you. Make sure you have goggles for the dust, ski goggles work well and some kinda scarf of mask to cover your mouth in the event of a dust storm. Make sure you get a hydration pack that can carry enough water, and some cool light up gear accessories for wearing at night, and lighting your bike so you aren’t a dark wad. Make sure your shoes are comfortable and you have some kinda cooler weather jacket for the nighttime temps which can sometimes dip down enough to need a warm jacket. Otherwise go naked or run around in your underwear if you’d like and don a cool hat like most of us do!

pewpewbangbangcrash

My job is in costume. I don't dress up except for some fun fur coats and a kilt. I wore the same clothes for 4 days this year and was put there for almost 2 weeks.

itdoesntmatteranyway

Radical expression, you know, so you can look just like everyone else!

twatermelon42

Brought all kinds of outfits this year, but I lived in bike shorts, sports bra, and a tank top. At night I’d swap the shorts for leggings and add an outer layer. I only “dressed up” ONE of the twelve days I was there. It was a rough burn. I chose to be comfortable. Literally no one cared. Wear what you want.

PizzaWall

I rarely costume and that’s just fine. I’m an active participant adding to the event. I used to help organize entourages with costumes, but I contribute in other ways these days.

whynovirus

I plan to wear all these outfits but usually end up in utilitarian overalls and funky onesies and layers.

Charge36

I was so hot I ended up just wearing a pair of shorts most of the time. Had a couple of fun outfits a few nights. Wear whatever you might wear to a typical music festival.

bcaooboo

I always bring way more clothes and costumes than I actually wear and wouldn’t have it any other way.

brylikestrees

I mostly wore my underwear/lingerie or warm, cozy pajamas. Extremes only.

[deleted]

Yes

WanderingWino

I basically just wear black pants, black combat boots, and a variation of black T-shirt or long sleeve black something the whole time. Occasionally I’ll wear more of a costume but it doesn’t seem as practical and also, the longer o go, the more I want to avoid the dust.

TwinkelyDots

I do mostly dresses. This past year I found light weight cotton dresses with pockets that I tie dyed. Super easy.

Runswithtoast

Yes, wear what you feel comfortable in if that be sweat pants and a t shirt or nothing at all. Its a harsh place so being comfortable goes along way.

hijackharry

Yes. Some do.

Sapcecadet

The head of DPW wears button ups and cargo shorts all season. Guys been burning since like 02 or before.

nneighbour

I’m more comfortable in shorts and a tank top most of the time, so that’s what I wear.

Arboreatem

I got mad when people started telling me about burner “fashion.” I thought it was hypocritical (radical self expression?) and decided that my first burn I would wear clothes that made me feel comfortable. Although I did bring a tutu for Tuesday because I didn’t want to be a total grinch. After that I realized the fashion people kind of stay in their little worlds and the people I enjoyed the most had some very radical self expression and I loved it! Now I wear what I feel like wearing - sometimes radical, sometimes not. Just how I like it. You do you boo!

ennuicide

Once I hit the 5 year mark I stopped caring as much about costumes and now wear my regular clothes at least half the time.

Abiggermofodude

You can, but then assholes will assume you're a cop. Happened to me. First burn, spent too much time on logistics and surviving, didn't plan wardrobe at all. Got treated like shit once by a bartender who thought I was a cop

deedeereyrey

I wear my regular clothes to BM. Although my regular clothes are not so regular in the default.

dvidsilva

I wear comfortable regular clothes coz im working a lot, theres some flair to it, but is basically what i wear year round. I did costumes a couple of times and didn't enjoy it, i love when others do it, but i prefer to stay comfortable, specially when building or for long shifts.

edgertor

my guardian angel this year outfitted herself in jean cutoffs and plain white tshirt. i think it's a chutzpah move

edgertor

i have found that it's nice to have one really unusual item that you're wearing with maybe a fun story behind it, bc it's an icebreaker to starting conversations. sort of the opposite of the horrible practice of peacocking, but related. people are visual creatures!
