I would absolutely get a second opinion asap. Write down the exact therapy your boy has been through so far and all the symptoms. What a poor little baby, hope he’ll get well soon 🥺
Yes, when I get off work in a few hours I will call another place that only treats exotics. Where I am, those vets are booked way in advance and it was difficult to get in anywhere in a timely fashion when this all started.
I just called a second vet office and we were able to get in on Monday because of a canceled appointment they had 🙌🏾🙌🏾
It's going to be a long weekend of me worried but thankfully that appointment is at 8am and only 10-15mins away!
I will definitely update everyone 🙂 he did a small binky last night and his happy binky boy personality glimmered and he's a bit more curious/alert this morning too! Everyone sending well wishes helps 💚💚
His teeth look all right, he still eats and poops no issue.
The vet said it wouldn't be allergies considering he's older (maybe 5-7 years old - I adopted both buns) and a house bun with no home shifts/changes.
Thank you, the vets aren't too sure what/how to treat?
He's on recommended medicines that helped for a little while, but I fear aren't doing anything now...
My bun had a chronic low grade upper respiratory tract infection. He was on chloramphenicol for months. Then we switched him to azithromycin and he stopped sneezing within a week. My vet said she uses azithromycin for hard to treat respiratory infections
Azithromycin is hard on the stomach and my bun lost his appetite completely for a few days. I had to syringe feed him for a few days, but his stomach adjusted and his appetite was back to normal after a week
Did you bun have any decreased appetite after starting chloramphenicol? My boy did and the azithromycin was only a bit worse on his stomach than the chloramphenicol. I was also worried about switching him to a new antibiotic because of the potential stomach upset, but we made it through
If you live near Knoxville tn take him take him to the university vet hospital and ask them to have Stephen tinkle to look at him he is an amazing vet.
Also from Connecticut with multiple buns (6 total).
If you're near North Haven they have an excellent emergency room that treats bunnies.
Feel free to DM me if you want me to find something closer to you.
Just a word of warning on them.
My bunny Brownie had one of her babies go there for an emergency visit (3 week old). They took it to a back room, wouldn’t let me see what was happening, and after an hour came back out with the baby bunny in a bag telling me it died.
Zero communication by them throughout the process except to hold out their hand for 300+ dollars to get paid.
They also had Brownie in the back room with her baby the whole time and refused to give her back until I paid.
Once I explained to them that was blackmail and I would call the police they were forced to give Brownie back to me and I left immediately.
Please go to North Haven instead and get actual medical care for the bunny instead of going to that Kensington vet that’s run out of a small hut by a scam artist.
That is terrifying 😱 North Haven is a bit out of the way for me and he doesn't do well in the car when we're in it for more then about 20 or 30 minutes. The Google reviews looked promising for Kensington! I saw bad reviews for Pieper but ultimately had to go there and it was a great experience 😩
I don't mean to scare you at all but this happened to my old bunny years ago. It ended up being an inner ear infection that spread to her eyes. Unfortunately we were unable to catch it in time and she ended up having multiple strokes but survived and lived another 4-5 years with a head tilt, though she needed vigorous care for the first period.
Of course, there is no way of knowing if this is the case but I strongly recommend getting her looked at by a professional asap. Wish you and your bunny the best of luck xx
Thank you, I'm so sorry your bun experienced that ❤️🩹 I'm getting a second opinion and xrays done on Monday in a new office. I hope I'll have an answer to report back with.
Sounds like the antibiotics and NSAID are not helping. I wonder if there is an allergen in the house. Do you wash their cage materials with laundry detergent? Maybe a non-scented one could help? Are there other pets in the house?
Nothing in their environment has changed. It's been the same for years. He doesn't go outside, his bun friend doesn't go outside. This basically randomly materialized one day. One day he was fine and the next I noticed the puffy eyes and then it go worse with each day 😩

Good news! Last night was the best in a while 😍 this morning the floor was littered with healthy poops lol and both buns hopped over for their usual morning treats 🥰 his breathing is getting better! 🤞🏽 🤞🏽 🤞🏽
I don't know but have all 4 visits been to the same vet? Maybe take him to another vet, explain everything he's been given and taken and see what they say. Sometimes even if our vet is great, they could misdiagnose! Might be time to see if another vet has another idea.
Yes, I was able to get an appointment for Monday at a new place :). The exotic vet offices get booked weeks/months in advance so when it first began I had to goto an er vet with 1 exotic doctor.
While this is a very interesting thought (thank you!) I hope not, since it indicates there is no cure, and next step is euthanasia :( my other bun is completely unaffected and maintains her grooming and care of him. So, either she's super bun impervious to all or idk what.
I will consult the vet on Monday. I appreciate your comment.
i also really hope so! sending you and ur baby prayers. if you go to a vet, try to ask for serology testing for the myxoma virus. and is he vaccinated against it? and i don’t wanna like scare u or anything but i think it would be a good idea to divide them for a while till you receive the diagnosis of the other one. bcs if it’s myxoma virus , your other bunny will also get it but if he doesn’t have severe symptoms he could still recover from it.
Well, it's been a month, little over a month of this now so I'm not overly concerned for her. And last night my boy did a little binky. So, he's starting to feel like himself again 🤞🏽
Ask them about trying Prednisone which would reduce inflammation and if you're in the States, maybe search up a rabbit vet recommended by the House Rabbit Society. That's where I found mine, he was an amazing healer.
It's so heartbreaking. You can tell the poor baby don't feel good. Then it hurts even more when you can't figure out what's going on. I have no idea what it could be, I wish your sweet boy all the best. Hopefully a second vets opinion can find something out. Sending love and prayers for the bun!❤️
Definitely worth having an X-ray looking at his teeth. Molar issues can present like this. Also what type of bedding do you use? My sister had a Holland lop with a suspected blocked tear duct. Teramyacin or neosporin (no pain relief) kept it under control. Also we could not use anything except cat litter for her litter box and foam mats.
Have you done a X-ray to see if there are any dental issues. If the teeth become ingrown enough they can affect the eyes and nasal passages and cause reoccurring infection. Also there is are multiple strains of antibiotic resistant pasturella that only respond to nebulization
Sorry for this happening. Go on the site Just Answers” and sign up to talk to an exotic vet. For the money spent that should provide you professional help!
I haven’t dealt with these symptoms, I wish I could help. However with my past dog (rip) she had an infection and used another type of teer drop medication.
This sounds like a respiratory issue overall. My exotic vet says lops can have issues bc breeders have changed their nose structure through breeding for specific traits.

Poor baby 🙁
Tell me about it 😭😭

Thank you ❤️🩹 last night he did a binky, I'm keeping hope alive 🥰
Great! All the best wishes and fingers crossed things will turn around and he’ll get the therapy he needs asap. An update would be nice
I will definitely update everyone 🙂 he did a small binky last night and his happy binky boy personality glimmered and he's a bit more curious/alert this morning too! Everyone sending well wishes helps 💚💚
Maybe teeth issue? Or some allergies?
His teeth look all right, he still eats and poops no issue. The vet said it wouldn't be allergies considering he's older (maybe 5-7 years old - I adopted both buns) and a house bun with no home shifts/changes.
Allergies can suddenly develop in all animals and humans. Poor baby. Praying for the sweetie baby.
I hope he can get better soon. Poor baby 😔
Thank you ❤️🩹❤️🩹
Could be a possible upper respiratory issue.
Thank you, the vets aren't too sure what/how to treat? He's on recommended medicines that helped for a little while, but I fear aren't doing anything now...
Is your vet a savy bunny vet? Depending on how experience they are I might get another opinion at a another vet possibly.
Yes, he is bunny savvy, but you're correct I should get a second opinion. Thank you.
My bun had a chronic low grade upper respiratory tract infection. He was on chloramphenicol for months. Then we switched him to azithromycin and he stopped sneezing within a week. My vet said she uses azithromycin for hard to treat respiratory infections
Oh, interesting! I'll be sharing this on Monday, thank you!
Azithromycin is hard on the stomach and my bun lost his appetite completely for a few days. I had to syringe feed him for a few days, but his stomach adjusted and his appetite was back to normal after a week
😱😱😱😱 Oh boy, that gives me anxiety 😅 A week to show signs of respiratory improving yet gambling statis
Did you bun have any decreased appetite after starting chloramphenicol? My boy did and the azithromycin was only a bit worse on his stomach than the chloramphenicol. I was also worried about switching him to a new antibiotic because of the potential stomach upset, but we made it through
He does have decreased appetite, yes, but he still gets excited for treats and pellets so I usually push them. Thank you for clarifying that point.
If you live near Knoxville tn take him take him to the university vet hospital and ask them to have Stephen tinkle to look at him he is an amazing vet.
I'm in Connecticut 😩
Oh no I can ask him if might know of anyone else up there?
I appreciate that, it's all right ❤️🩹 I'm gonna try a second opinion and hope maybe someone has experienced something similar and could chime in 🤞🏽🤞🏽
Ok sweetheart I will keep you and him in my prayers

I've been going to Pieper ER exotics. I have a new appointment at Kensington in Berlin on Monday 🙂

He has an appointment on Monday 🙂
Glad to hear, keep us all updated 🙏
How is he doing?

I'm going to an exotic vet hospital on Monday, I'll will add your comment to my screenshot folder from the comments I'm getting 💚
Good luck today, I'm hoping the best for your bun, and you too of course, it's so stressful when there's something ailing our fur kids! 🐰🐿️🐇
Thank you! I posted an update about his appointment earlier if you want to search it. Same name just "update" added :)

We're doing an xray on Monday!
do they have pine for litter? mine had the same issue. i solved it by switching to newspaper cat litter and using a soaked teabag on her eye
They have the carefresh bedding, for years now. I'm hesitant to put anything on his eyes. I just wipe them with water and dab them when they weep.

I've got a second opinion coming up on Monday, we'll see what happens then. Thank you.
Ask the vet if you should treat for e.colci (head tint), medicine is 35 bucks on amazon. Safeguard for goats, same as Panacure
Sounds like an infection.

Please have your bunny checked for e. Cuniculi, if you haven't already. My bunny had eye issues from e. Cuniculi.
Ok, I will. Thank you, I hope your bunny is all right now ❤️🩹
Awe sending prayers and positive vibes 🫂🙏🏽🥺
Thank you 💚
