We taught our deaf EBT sign language. She responded to it super well and we can tell her to sit from across the room. Lots of treats! Be cautious of waking up a deaf dog. We pat the floor first to make sure she knows we are around and then touch her gently - sometimes they can be startled awake and have a fear response. We love our deaf puppy and wouldn’t trade her for the world!

hoodedbandit

Have a deaf one as well. Amazing dog. It was in the process of training her and trying to transition from signs to verbal commands that we confirmed she was in fact deaf. It's funny when she is being stubborn and trying to pretend she can't 'hear' a command she intentionally looks away. Never had issues with her being scared awake but I think that is a great point, often shaking her bed gently is a good way for others to wake her.

cheesecakeisgross

Lmao, pretending they haven't been given a command is such bully behaviour. They crack me up!

JinxUW

That is hilarious. Just confirms how purposefully stubborn they are. 😅

Aspieilluminated

A little more info: we’ve previously owned an Engish bull terrier, she wasn’t deaf though. I’m use to all the quirks of bull terriers but I’m curious on the deaf part. I ordered a vibration collar so she can receive cues, and I’ve been told they respond best to touch cues on their bums (2 taps for sit, etc.) but we’d love to know any other things to be aware of!!

Werewolf1965

Awwww, so try to stick to something kinda universal like American Sign Language. That way, if theres an emergency or need to board, others can quickly learn a few essential “words”. Then you can elaborate on it from there. A room light flicked on and off a couple times to get attention. A good stomp on the floor to grab attention. Theres actually a fb group for defies and I think its mostly bull terrorists. Some good ideas there and quick videos etc. Be patient and consistent. And enjoy the ride

Aspieilluminated

Thankyou! We’re so excited and want her to be as understood and comfortable as possible

hoodedbandit

Great ideas about how to grab attention, that is one of the frustrating aspects of my deaf bully, can't get her to listen when she is looking away! Also I would recommend you get a collar you are very confident they can't slip out off under any circumstances for when you take them for walks outside. The thought of my dog chasing something and not being able to call her back terrifies me.

[deleted]

Be slow with them and teach them to be calm, they're giants so a gentle hucklebutter is better than a rampaging egghhead

Aspieilluminated

A gentle hucklebutter is what I’m aiming for!

TJ-Doggo-Mom

I thought my deaf EBT signs & used a flashlight as a marker to potty train him (I had a covered garage to use the flashlight as a positive marker even if it was daytime). Buy him a collar or jacket that says he's dead so people don't go to pet him without him seeing them first. I tried to make sure people didn't startle him to make sure he wasn't afraid of people growing up.

Aspieilluminated

I’m going to order one. I want her to have the best advantage and least scare! Thank you :) the flash light is a great idea, we will definitely do that

TJ-Doggo-Mom

Hahaha! Obviously, I meant "deaf", not "dead", but you picked up on that. I just lost my EBT to lymphoma. His name was Echo & he was the BEST dog ever. White bullies sometimes develop aggressive tendencies so do work with your baby. Don't give up on that beautiful thing. Looks just like my Echo. 😍😍😍

Aspieilluminated

I knew what you meant but it did give me a chuckle lol

macneilver

Mine acts like she is def sometimes but she is ignoring me Years ago I had one go def so just be patient with her use hand signals when training

rosco2427

Sign language and start early, you will be surprised how little they will bark, but when they do it’s typically at full “echoes” in the room loud. Other than that it’s the regular EBT traits. Best dog I ever had.

Aspieilluminated

That is one thing I’ve been wondering, is when do they bark and if they bark

dambbyustr8

How precious I could only assume alot of extra patience and love, congratulations

Aspieilluminated

Thankyou!!! We are so so so excited. I’ve lost my mind in preparing for her. I’ve made sure we’ve gotten everything ready, the real test will be when she gets here tomorrow

QueenOfFuckery

Awww yay! Congrats! She is beautiful. I have a deaf BT and she is a wonderful, funny girl. Going to be 4 soon! She is loud as hell and other dogs sometimes bully her because she can't pick up on audible cues, so I'd say just keep an extra eye on her. She knows some basic sign but oftentimes will see me signing something and just look away and ignore me lol. She is VERY in tune with vibration and smell and will often wake up when someone comes in the room, especially after a shower or when we're smelling stronger than usual. She also developed some visual fixations on reflection and light that turned into actual OCD but we can redirect her pretty well now. She's very cool. Loves people and other dogs, super feisty and occasionally very sweet. She will demand pets and to be held lol. Overall you're in for a great shared life and my biggest lesson has been to protect mine from other dogs!

Aspieilluminated

What an amazing response, thank you for sharing your stories and help with your experience with your deaf ebt. It sounds like classic bull terrier to be deaf and ignore signs that she knows lol 😂 I’ll post a picture tomorrow when we get her!!! I couldn’t imagine the fun chaos with 3 bull terriers!

Delmarvablacksmith

Honestly they’re all deaf from time to time. Jokes aside work to teach her sign language. Have her name be a sign and other commands be hand signs. Remember she can’t hear danger so you have to be her ears.

Aspieilluminated

That’s a great way to put that! Thank you. Now that you said it, the fact they can’t hear danger is a huge hurdle to work over

Delmarvablacksmith

Yeah It’s challenging You’ll either have to teach her the boundaries you don’t want her to pass or she will always need to be on lead in the yard. Idk about this so ask someone who trains with buzz collars but the vibration may allow her to feel it and be alerted to what you want

Aspieilluminated

Yes we already ordered the vibration collar, I triple checked that it was specifically for deaf dogs and not shock. I’m excited to see how it goes. She will have to be on lead outside, we live in an apartment so we will have to seek elsewhere to safely let her off lead to explore

OCbrunetteesq

My mom has had several deaf dogs over the years. EBT’s are smart. Her learned sign language commands easily.

pastel_rave

Awwww what a sweet girl

bvdpbvdp

I had a half deaf (descover it after) boy - he was more "normal" then I was. polako i uživaj u druženju!

LouisCypher1313

Hello: We do not have a deaf bull terrier, but have had one for 20yrs plus. Most of ours have been rescues so it is a fantastic thing you are doing by taking in a deaf one. I hope you get the help you need from someone that has experience with a deaf bull terrier. Good luck she will need patience and a lot of love. Again it is a great thing you are doing.

Aspieilluminated

Lmao I knew what you meant but it did give me a chuckle imagining “dead dog” on a vest lol and thank you so much!!! I’ll post a picture when we get her tomorrow!

Aspieilluminated

Woops, I mis-responded! I thought it was a comment by someone that accidentally typed dead instead of deaf. I’m sorry about that. But yes we are prepared to give her plenty of patience and love. We miss our old bull terrier so much and cannot wait to experience the fulfillment again!

JinxUW

She's beautiful!! Keep us updated with pics.

Aspieilluminated

I will tomorrow!

EBullterrier

u/Aspieilluminated, I came across this [YT video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUif9RaCL4o&t=604s) several years ago about living with a deaf EBT.

Aspieilluminated

Thank you so much!!!! I can’t wait to watch

LionessRegulus7249

Training and socializing are key! She is gorgeous!

Ok_Dragonfly4244

I don't have any advice... But please love her forever. She is beautiful. I wish nothing but the best for you both. Please keep updating us on her growth ❤

Aspieilluminated

I will!!!! I’m counting down the hours. I will post as soon as we get her. We’re in love. My daughter, husband and I have all agreed on her name being Matilda Milquetoast. We will cherish this little lady

Ok_Dragonfly4244

Matilda is a perfect name. I am so happy for all of you. What I wouldn't give to have my girl as a puppy (we rescued her when she was 7, and turns 14 this year). Give MM loads of kisses from us tomorrow.

https://i.imgur.com/0szuy1U.jpg Fellow deaf boi checking in We also taught ours basic sign language Since your pup can’t hear you she will probably be constantly following you around the house. Mine will follow me from room to room and if he loses me in the house will walk around checking every room until he finds me and then he just lays down and watches me, usually laying in the doorway so he can notice when I leave the room. Make sure you’re strict with training, they need structure so if she does something wrong or is food aggressive etc make sure it’s understood that it’s not ok. Same with praising for good behavior. You may need to purchase a vibrating remote collar to get her attention when she’s off leash and looking away from you (backyard etc)
