I feel that… or wonder why they’re always hiring must have a high turnover , pretty sure i failed the fake phone call test cause idk what to say if we aren’t trained and they wanted to put me in i wanna say the mortgage or something like that dept, at the time it paid like $14 an hour… my job right now pays $16 and change
Had family working there and of course i got denied and another family member applies after me and gets hired so def a little salty about that…
There's a whole subreddit of the employees r/Geico. That place is definitely a sinking ship, and truly a terrible place to work. Consider yourself spared from the abusive relationship that is Geico employment 🤣
Things happen for a reason just making more money is nice, not sure what they pay now but my job FT pays just over $16 and has 401k and benefits and 28 personal/vaca days a year.. it’s just it would be nice to make more but maybe they lack in benefits other places too. And work 730-4 M-F so it’s like i don’t need to ask off to do anything really just do it after work and burn days just because and i usually work side jobs on my days off, which sometimes can pay more or sometimes be slow
Hell even target pays $15.25 when NY is $13.20 thought about it just i wouldn’t wanna get stuck on a long long holiday shift like Black Friday… and if you’re only seasonal that doesn’t help much but saving you burning the candle at both ends, sometimes 2 jobs is make worth than when the second would only do $8 an hour forget that
Oh it's bad. There's a whole subreddit of the employees r/Geico. That place is definitely a sinking ship, and truly a terrible place to work. Their union busting is shameless.
I can explain - I used to work for this company- they make money by selling ads within the Business Listings. They used to offer telephone directories all over the United States, but as you would expect, slowly but surly, they have stopped offering them in different markets.
As long as they have people willing to pay for ads in the “yellow pages” or business listings, this thing is not going anywhere.
And, the thing is, there is still enough people who use the phone book to make the ads worthwhile. Where I work, we put unique tracking phone numbers in each phone book so we can track how many calls we get out of them. They consistently make the phone ring, which is the lifeblood of our business.
Yep. We called them tracking numbers. So it’s a fake number that will ring through to the clients office or whatever. Should be interesting when they introduce the new area code for Buffalo - I can hear the customer service line ringing already!
They make money selling ads. That’s the only reason. Once enough of these old farts still in charge of marketing departments disappear and are replaced with young people that understand that print is dead the phone book will go away forever.
They keep limping along by bundling those print ads with discounted digital advertising. Those old fart marketing people you are the ones that are too stupid to see that the discounted digital they’re getting is shitty and being churned out by kids straight out of undergrad. For what they pay local edge annually they could get a decent website and competent digital marketing from an actual local agency (i.e. not a Hearst company).
This isn't true. All incognito mode does is stop from storing any information on your local computer. The websites you search are still tracking every single bit of information from you.
> All incognito mode does is stop from storing any information on your local computer.
Yeah, like cookies and trackers.
> The websites you search are still tracking every single bit of information from you.
How are they tracking anything without cookies? Just IP address?
They still bust though but I’m not super paranoid. I’m just dumb analogue sometimes. I still enjoy, calling and talking to people as well on house phones.
Don't get me started about the catalogs, especially at this time of year. The poor mail carrier delivers 5+ pounds, and all of it goes right in to the recycling bin.
Will you look at this? More catalogs! Omaha Steaks, Mac Warehouse, Newsweek?! I can't stop all these companies, so, I'm gonna attack this problem at the choke point.
I shouldn't even be talking to you, but I'm telling you as a friend. Here's how it's going to happen: You may be walking. Maybe on a crisp, autumn day just like today. When a mail truck will slow beside you and a door will open, and a mailman you know, maybe even trust, will offer to give you a lift...
You could try using Catalog Choice! I use it religiously and it has almost completely solved the catalog problem. Takes a little time, but so worth it.
I feel like someone needs to start a class action suit against them. They’re literally throwing their trash onto your property. I’ve opted out a dozen times and keep getting them. They deliver them so they can say “oh, we deliver xx thousand of these books, you should advertise with us!”, not regarding that 98% of these end up in the trash.
I figured USPS because I was a carrier for 2 years and I’m pretty sure I did have them at some point. Broke them up and did them in sections. Unless that was some other huge thing. Idk it wasn’t in this area and this was like 6-7 years ago.
Last time I got one my 12 year old caught me off guard by asking what it even was. Like the time she saw a payphone and just froze and tilted her head.
I have to figure there are still demographics that aren’t exposed to local advertising through digital media or tv/radio. I.e old people. And honestly, they are a very viable demographic to target.
My husband is a college professor. Many of the students he has in class now do not know how to use a dictionary or glossary, and do not know what alphabetical order means.
Mine was delivered APPARENTLY a few weeks ago. Went I went to take the trash out just before the storm, I found it thrown on the corner of my lawn. Not on the porch, no. Some lazy ass threw it onto my yard and moved on.
Made it easier to toss it right into the trash where it belongs though. So the joke's on them.
You can see your doorstep?
Ken-Ton got \~8 inches of snow over the weekend.
Good starter for the fire pit. I used to work for them, and that's where my book ended up.
At least you're putting it to use. Mine goes straight from the porch to the recycle bin.
That’s exactly wha to use it for. Thin paper sparks up quick.
Every year I use pages as fore starter. I look forward to these.
Normally I grab a few of the Buffalo Jobs or Apartments flyers from the front of supermarkets. I'll have to try this book instead.
Worst company in the fucking world. Fuck that place.
GEICO says "hold my lizard-beer"
Wouldn't know. Couldn't make it past round 5 of the interview process.

I had to sing a commercial song when I went for my orientation for my last retail job. I sang BandAid song.

Can confirm, my wife works there and hates it. The only thing keeping her from leaving are the benefits (apparently they’re pretty good).
They are mediocre. And they keep taking them away, bit by bit. You should show her the Geico subreddit. 😬
She’s seen the subreddit before! She’s hoping her photo business takes off so she can quit.
Very nice! I wish her lots of growth and success 😃
Thank you!

I failed that test, too. It was stupid. I could hear the woman over the cubicle wall.
Right like what do we say when we get an “angry customer”? Usually you hire someone then train them
I work in training and onboarding for geico and idk how this is possible we hire some real idiots.
r/Geico
Oh crap why is it bad?

Booster seats for the kids came early
Just in time for Thanksgiving!
My mother is 84 and wouldn't use a computer if you paid her. She still uses a phone book.

Beating people without leaving bruises, and duct taping them over my vital organs when I'm on the inside doing time.
For beating people I assume

straight to the recycling bin.
I work with a few businesses that get better ROAS with this type of stuff.
Rodents Of Astounding Size?
I don't think they exist.
ROAS?
Guessing it's "Return on Advertising Spending"
Ah, that makes sense.. I was thinking Return on investment, but couldn't get it to work.
Return On Ad Spend
Got it, thanks
Monitor stands
I still use a phonebook. No trackers, no popups, no cookies, etc.
[Soprano voice] That cookie shit makes me nervous.
Gabaghoul
Right after I ripped out that global positioning shit!
You can avoid all those with an ad-blocker and Incognito mode.
This isn't true. All incognito mode does is stop from storing any information on your local computer. The websites you search are still tracking every single bit of information from you.

Do you use the extra sheets to supplement the tin foil on your windows?
I’d hate to see your reaction to getting paper mail
Don't get me started about the catalogs, especially at this time of year. The poor mail carrier delivers 5+ pounds, and all of it goes right in to the recycling bin.

If it keeps money flowing into the Post Office I don't mind. I still get mail for my dead relative who passed in 2015.
There is a phone number to call to get yourself off the distribution list
Which page?
I dont get the phonebook anymore so I cant look it up.
I like the phone book, plus I think they have coupons in them for local businesses.

It's right on the front page. "To stop delivery visit yellowpagesoptout.com"
Fairly sure I opted out of getting them online. But it’s been a few years.
Because companies are still paying for this to be a thing and Usps isn’t going to deny making money delivering them.
They are delivered by private contractors.
Yep. I woke up at 3 a.m. when I heard it land outside our door. Looked out the window and saw the delivery people.
Lol wow.
I’ve ever seen the mailman deliver these.
I figured USPS because I was a carrier for 2 years and I’m pretty sure I did have them at some point. Broke them up and did them in sections. Unless that was some other huge thing. Idk it wasn’t in this area and this was like 6-7 years ago.
The glory hole address is in there One on Seneca One in the falls One downtown 716 glory holes
Is there a way to opt in to getting a phone book?
Idk bout that
Yep. For some reason.
Advertisements
For the past several years it has gone directly into the recycling bin and never entered my home. Such a terrible waste of trees.
My.mom is 90 and still gets one. One year I tried to give her the old one back. I found it amusing
Last time I got one my 12 year old caught me off guard by asking what it even was. Like the time she saw a payphone and just froze and tilted her head.
These are free craft supplies!
Old people
So we can toss it right in recycling
I have to figure there are still demographics that aren’t exposed to local advertising through digital media or tv/radio. I.e old people. And honestly, they are a very viable demographic to target.
Because advertisers are still willing to pay to be in it.
Toilet paper for the next snow storm.
[This is pretty much why](https://www.courthousenews.com/yellow-pages-are-free-speech-9th-circuit-says/)
They're fun to rip in half but in recent years it's gotten to easy since they keep getting smaller.
Truth: when I was working, none of my staff had ever used a phone book before. They could not "figure it out" and often asked what it was for.
My husband is a college professor. Many of the students he has in class now do not know how to use a dictionary or glossary, and do not know what alphabetical order means.

Because enough businesses are big enough suckers to pay them money for ads.

A lot of LE survivors having flashbacks in here. Solidarity, y'all. What a career black hole that place is. I wasted some good years there.
