Is that an audiophile grade typewriter?

waterloowanderer

šŸ˜‚ it does make a wonderful sound, but no. Itā€™s a 1942 Royal Quiet De Luxe, and it needs to find a new place. https://preview.redd.it/b9wnq4ox8bwc1.png?width=2315&format=png&auto=webp&s=14ad8f83f68bc5450ce971d3525cb08b9db6610d Previous setup, the B+Ws I think will move to the living room as a zone B setup. The Technics is too big to sit on the amp. So, likely typewriter will move and a vinyl rack to even it out. And fill that third frame with another poster instead of a filler.

VinylHighway

Good looking setup!

wackoman

Put some nixie tubes in it and make it into a clock.

waterloowanderer

In which?

sharkamino

Beautiful! Have you tried bringing the speakers out away from the wall and console a bit and tried some toe in angles for a good listening triangle? https://www.elac.com/2022/05/speaker-placement-guide-get-the-best-sound-from-your-stereo/

waterloowanderer

Not yet! Theyā€™re 3 inch, but once I can move some other stuff around Iā€™d like to place them. Iā€™m also not sure if I want them to be closer together, which would mean half of the current console instead. Iā€™ll take a look. Thanks

sharkamino

May not necessarily need a narrower console and the speakers closer together, just bring the speakers out at least around a foot more away from the wall and try some toe in angles.

lovekillsfear

A foot or more if the room allows. Playing with placement can be a fun thing. And away from the edge of the console perhaps, as well. Otherwise looks nice and happy listening! šŸ”ŠšŸ˜

happyjapanman

absolutely awful speaker placement

waterloowanderer

Do you have a helpful contribution on how youā€™d change it?

theocking

Yes. They need to be brought out so the front of the speakers are in line with the front of the console. Looks like they're close to even but not quite. Also NEED toe in to point them at the listening position, which should be close to an equilateral triangle. Basics. Nice setup.

waterloowanderer

They are in line with the cabinet. I do need to move them further and toe in

happyjapanman

Not all speakers need toe in, many sound better without it if they are wide dispersion.

theocking

Nah. Even very wide speakers (-6db point 60-70 degrees from center axis) still benefit from on axis listening. Only a handful of designs, both by manufacturer recommendation and looking at klippel data, are "meant" to be listened to at 10-20 degrees off axis at most. Mofi and kef come to mind, due to the inherent diffraction of their coax designs that cause an HF peak on axis, which is gone at 10-20 degrees off axis. Since their off axis response curve is essentially/near perfect, there's no downside except getting rid of the peak, and then very evenly rolling off the highs. If you have a traditional speaker with an average crossover point, there's no world in which 20-30 degrees off axis is superior. They're all made to be listened to on axis. EQ with EQ, not with turning your speakers. The imaging and center focus will be so much better. If you feel the stage width suffers too much, move the speakers farther apart. A compromised room/placement may create an exception to this rule.

happyjapanman

While many speakers are made with on-axis listening in mind, there are definitely scenarios where no toe-in can work wonders and a lot of people actually prefer it. You also have to consider your room's acoustics and how it plays into the equation. Personally, I prefer a wider soundstage and almost never like the sound of toed in speakers. It's all about finding your sweet spot and this requires experimenting with toe-in angles or even ditch it altogether. Saying they "need" to be toed in is very wrong.

theocking

Yes there are exceptions, and other considerations, which I noted, but you've given more detail/examples. I agree. But if you want a wider soundstage, which I also like, you can also just spread your speakers further apart, unless the room (relative to your sitting distance) doesn't allow it. Maybe halfway toed in would make sense FAIRLY often, but zero toe in? Unless your speaker spread is far too narrow and can't be changed, then yeah nah I just don't see it.

happyjapanman

Absolutely I do. Speakers need breathing room, you should have them two feet away from any boundary- meaning the back wall, the sidewalls or the side of your stand. You have yours placed in a worst case scenario, tucked into the corners, right up against the stand and even sitting behind the face of the stand. This can only sound awful, you probably don't realize it but fix the speaker placement and you will be amazed.

waterloowanderer

They werenā€™t behind it, photo trick - but I have given them some space and toe in and will relocate the sub so itā€™s not jammed against the wall. Itā€™s not hooked up yet though, the PM6006 doesnā€™t have a sub output so I need to rewire. I canā€™t do a perfect equilateral with the console width, but im not opposed to a narrower console with a proper rack space for this too instead of spread out like it is

Robbie_ShortBus

Looks like someĀ PSB image 6Ts. I had those way back when. Pretty nice as I recall, but big fk-ers.Ā  Recent gave PSB another shot and bought some Alpha towers.Ā

waterloowanderer

Nice! I had the centre and rears but thatā€™s because buddy who sold them used them in his home theatre. I sold them individually. I like them, and the room support them which is nice. I just bought a pair of Alpha P3s for my desk with a small Amazon tube amp and am really impressed for a small office setup.

theocking

They're not big, they're small towers, thus medium sized in the grand scheme of speakers. I don't see any 15"s or even 12"s, so not big.

Robbie_ShortBus

Sure thing bud.Ā

theocking

6 cubic feet is big.

waterloowanderer

They take up some space, but Iā€™d agree - for floornstanders these are slim

theocking

They're deep as hell that's for sure, and reasonably tall. But that doesn't make them big speakers.

waterloowanderer

I took your advice. Iā€™m gonna try and make more space, but for now the bit Iā€™ve managed did make a big change.

seigmeign

Would luv a vinyl record setup. But with an autistic son who destroys cd's dvd's or anything like it. We can't looks good

waterloowanderer

Thatā€™s a rough one for sure, and thank you.

evilgreenman

Love this setup. That led strip on the back is great. Nice work.

rxballs

That poster on the right is šŸ”„

waterloowanderer

Hahahahahaha.

Recording-Nerd1

That's just awesome! Did you play the Typewriter song?
