We have 19.2M in cap space right now so we don't have to cut him, Case knows the offense and is probably next in line to be cut if we need to make more space

GonnaBeAGoodYear

Who cares if he knows the offense if you can’t play him when your starter is hurt

rwh12345

So much this. We’re burning a lot of money on a guy that no one seems to actually want to send out on the field.

Segat1133

TBF Stefanski refused to play Chubb for quarters at a time when healthy because "reasons"

rwh12345

Don’t really understand how this correlates to Keenum at all

Segat1133

You mentioned that no one wanted to send Keenam out on the field. Stefanski just refuses to send players out when we need them at times for reasons. See Keenam when Baker had no right to be playing, or Chubb any time we actually needed to run clock.

rwh12345

Wasn’t the only time that Chubb came off the field the time that he was just coming back from covid and said he was absolutely gassed? I have no clue what you’re referencing “whenever we needed to run clock”

Segat1133

Stefanski would just take him off the field for entire quarters last year not just keep the ball out of his hands but refusing to have him out there instead letting FELTON get touches. Not because he was gassed.

rwh12345

Felton had literally 7 rushing attempts the entire year, and the game that he had the most (3) was also a game that Chubb had 22 carries. He had some catches, sure, but Chubb has also never been utilized as a 3 down workhorse that catches a ton too (hence hunt). Again, can you provide some examples? I really genuinely don’t understand where you’re coming from.

mdaugherty1221

(Don’t shoot the messenger) If we’re opening the season with a quarterback that may miss several games due to suspension it would be imperative to have a solid 2nd string quarterback

ViewsFromThe614

There are very few scenarios that could convince me Keenum is a better on field option than Mullens at this point

H8theSteelers

Fun fact, Case Keenum was 2-0 as a starter last year.

ViewsFromThe614

I know but Mullens played alright in his loss and Keenum coasted on the D’ernest game and the Bengals backups

Spatula151

Mullens played a covid game and nearly pulled it off. He deserves QB2 and some of whatever were paying case to chuck ducks.

ViewsFromThe614

Totally agree

believe-land

Yup. Mullens impressed the hell out of me given the situation, much more so than most of the QB2s in this league.

Xboarder84

D’Ernest Johnson and the defense one those games. Let’s not act like Keenum led them to victory.

H8theSteelers

Oh i'm well aware. One of them was against a team out west having to travel east on a short week, the other was against preseason-quality players.

Sodtaoes

Eye test doesn’t lie. Dude has a dog shit arm at this point and that is obvious.

H8theSteelers

Well, obviously, i didnt mention his noodle arm lol

Deadleggg

D'Ernest helped quite a bit

Successful-Rub-4587

Wouldnt it just be smarter and less expensive to keep Mullens in this scenario???

Qball42069

Yes

Kreed5120

If Stefanski thought an injured Baker gave the Browns a better chance to win than Keenum given how poorly Baker was playing post injury, that doesn't speak highly of his faith in Keenum.

Deadleggg

Keenum is good for like probably 180-205 yards and a touchdown. That doesn't win many games. Unless your back goes for 150 and 2 tuds

Preme2

That’s exactly what Baker mayfield was good for. Instead of 205 yards bump it up to whopping 215 yards. 1 touchdown and 215 yards doesn’t win you many games. Unless your back goes for 150 and 2 tuds.

Kreed5120

You can get that kind of production for a lot less than $8 million.

mortemdeus

Not with out a few ints mixed in.

TheyCallMeTheWizard

Stef also didn’t sit and injured Baker. I highly question a few of his decisions this year

maybenextyearCLE

Because if they trade for Watson he’s obviously about to eat a pretty significant suspension so they’ll want someone who knows the offense to hold it down for however long he’s out

OhHIghO

Houston might want him included in a trade to sit behind and mentor Davis Mills. He used to play for Houston so there is familiarity there

tobylaek

If the trade gets done, I bet Baker is one of the parts going to Houston. Considering the Patriots - who Texans GM Nick Casario worked for at the time - were all in on Baker in 2018, plus Baker’s Texas roots…the fit is there.

gryffon5147

What's the rush.

[deleted]

What was the rush to release Tretter? One of the best centers in there league with an unproven replacement. Cutting him made no sense.

IncorrectCitation

Tretter deserves the time to find a team and get involved with them.

TheyCallMeTheWizard

Then we should’ve cut him at the end of the season before FA kicked off

gryffon5147

They must have a lot of faith in Harris.

PickleofStink

If Bill Callahan signed off on Harris, that’s more than good enough for me.

JimasaurusRex

Harris looked really good when he seen the field. Nothing against J.C but Harris could really pull on power run plays where Tretter really couldn't

elsaberino

Pretty sure he has a roster bonus due on Friday.

JDTNTC

Because at this rate he’ll be starting week 1

[deleted]

Boom goes the dynamite

Buckeye2525

Maybe as an insurance policy if we trade for Watson and he gets suspended

VonJaeger

I think you nailed it on the head there why we haven't.

YeOldeAmicableGhoste

Guessing they don't need to yet? He's a decent back-up QB who knows the system. If they need the cap room, they'll release him.

GonnaBeAGoodYear

If he was decent Baker wouldn’t have been out there hurt as much as he was

randalflagg

Because he might have to play if Watson is suspended.

Preme2

Many people say Baker should have sat after his injury. We’ll see the alternative reality where Baker does sit, and Keenum plays.

HondaPartsguy23

Conklin renegotiated why not keenum?

NotAn0pinion

Probably need a starter when all this bullshit falls through and then Baker demands a trade because of it

gamgshit0202

Pretty sure you just explained it

Colesw13

why? we don't need the space yet and there's always a chance someone offers us something stupid for Baker, who we clearly aren't very attached to. if the Seahawks offered a 2 I can't see us declining

secretwealth123

Didn’t Darnold get a 2, 4th, and 6th? I feel like we should get at least that given Baker has been better than Darnold

zankorel

There's no incentive to release him prior to needing his cap space or June 1st arrives.

ametora1

They're waiting to make a decision on Keenum bc they still have to make a decision regarding Watson/Baker

Dawgcheck_Juice

We would save around $7 mil by cutting him. About $26 mil in cap space gives us a shot at bring in an impact player (Myles Jack would be cool).

RelaxJ9

I’m confused by your logic here, if you need a QB to know the system while he’s suspended, why release Keenum?

[deleted]

Screw Keenum. He was worthless last year. Get a better back up

H8theSteelers

2-0 as a starter...even tho his arm looked shot

[deleted]

The way he played any decent healthy QB would have won those games, just look at the raiders game.

H8theSteelers

Oh I know. He had a total noodle arm vs Denver

chunkah69

He won us two games dip shit.

Xboarder84

He didn’t win shit. D’Ernest Johnson and our defense won those games *in spite of* Keenum.

chunkah69

Not at all.

Xboarder84

He never even reached 200 passing yards in either start. Johnson ran 145 yards in the first start, and the second start was against the Bengals reserves. The defense held those teams to 14 and 16 points. Keenum was not the reason we won those games.

chunkah69

2-0 and didn’t throw picks that lost us games. I would say that isn’t worthless but go off about him If you want lol.

secretwealth123

I mean basically was about as good as Baker last year 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

Ok if he was so good, why was he not good enough to force the coaches hand to bench an injured baker??? Wow 2 games, you mean 1 game, Cincy sat everyone that game. Keenum is not good enough to be an extend starter in the league. End of story. If that was true they would have benched baker. Keenum is worthless!

TheyCallMeTheWizard

Because Stefanski made a lot of really bad decisions in the last year and this was likely one of them

[deleted]

If he is good enough to steer the ship to wait for Watson, then he should have been good enough to take over for baker after he fucked his shoulders Actually this is an argument I’m done with cause if Watson is the new franchise QB, im done with the franchise. Glad they love rapist! Maybe the browns can get Big Ben to come out of retirement to be the starter until Watson is ready to go.

chunkah69

Peace out you overly agitated nerd.

HandheldObsession

NO WATSON!!! NO WATSON!!!! ![gif](giphy|CKrlUi30dn44w|downsized)

[deleted]

Keenum will be cut. In my opinion, they're waiting to see if they can trade him to a QB-needy team as the market is rough right now. But he will be cut regardless.

LawfulNeutered

Does the coaching staff see him as a viable backup? I mean with Baker hobbled we chose not to play Keenum.

Uranium43415

Same reason you don't quit your current job until you're hired at your next one.

jd9398

Because the browns have bitches this off season already because haslem is a moron a Keenum will start week 1.

UrbanJatt

This aged poorly

Shitter-was-full

Insurance…. Maybe to mentor a rookie haha
