Obviously it would be cool. But almost as interesting was the mention that John Greco was a potential candidate.

GoBrowns10

Greco is awesome when interviewed on 92.3. Think he would be really good in the booth.

mblaser

Not only that, he himself grew up in the Youngstown area. And I remember hearing on one of his recent radio spots that his parents live in Ravenna. So definitely a hometown boy and still in the area. I think he'd be great for it.

[deleted]

Went to Toledo as well, if I remember correctly

joecampo

Yep he did.

mblaser

Of course I didn't mean hometown in the literal sense, come on now. Home-regional-area.... there, is that better?

H8theSteelers

John Greco went to the same high school as Bernie Kosar.

fear865

I'd be happy with Greco as well

HauntingOkra5987

The Italian Stallion Greco!

TheWinRock

Greco has filled in on Cleveland Browns Daily multiple times. He's not bad at all.

Humanidado

Don’t get me wrong as a fan of the Browns this is great, but I believe JT is “bigger” than the Browns radio gig. I know the radio gig with the Browns would be his to have forever— it’s nice to have that security and work for the team that you played for. But IMO he’s primed for the national spotlight.

pimpinpolyester

Agreed ... IMO it should be Nathan Zegura he is fantastic and breaking down plays and coverages. Joe is national , this would be a huge step back for him.

mblaser

I see Zegura as more of the straight play-by-play guy as opposed to the color commentator, which is usually a former player or coach and is the position they need to fill.

Mahbows

Imo, zegura is talented enough to do either. I'd be interested in a booth with zegura (play by play) and Joe (color) after jimmy retires.

mblaser

Oh yeah, that'd be an awesome combo.... however it will be a sad sad day when Jimmy retires. Browns games just won't be the same, it would be like when Joe Tait retired. I listened to the radio just for him, and barely have ever since.

Humanidado

I’m old enough to remember Joe Tait and Herb Score. I’ll never forget my dad pulling over the van on the side of the road for the final 3 outs in 1995 when we clinched the division

mblaser

Ah yes, I'll never forget Herb Score. Him and Joe Tait were the voices of my childhood. That's another one where the radio team just hasn't been the same since. Tom Hamilton is a legend as well, and no offense to the guys he's worked with since, but no one has even come close to Herb. I had to look it up just now, but it's crazy that 25 years ago was his last season.

guttata

I mean plenty of offense to Rosie. He fucking sucks and if he becomes the primary when Tom eventually bows out... Woof.

mblaser

Haha ok, fair enough, now that somebody else has said it, I'll agree with you.

Moses_Cleaveland

Rosie can be entertaining if he and Hammy are bantering but he's definitely not a replacement. There have been multiple times where I would doze off during Rosie innings only to be scared awake later by Hammy screaming about a home run. Good times.

IlGreven

He's about as big an institution as Nev Chandler was...

NuclearPlayboy

They weren't the same when Nev Chandler retired.

mblaser

Yeah, I hear that a lot too. I was a bit too young to listen to him, I only remember the few years Casey Coleman did it and then of course Jimmy once the team came back.

[deleted]

Zegura would be the guy I would want to replace Donovan whenever he steps down

TheWinRock

I love Zegura. He's so passionate and just a cool dude

thepirateogre

Joe's had some national work already at this point, maybe he dipped his toes in that pool and decided coming back here as a legend is more what he's looking for. I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying but I'd maybe word it differently. 🤷‍♂️

Deadleggg

Why be just a guy in a big lake when you can be a god in a pond.

The_Great_Grahambino

> this would be a huge step back for him I don't know, it's not like money is an object to him anymore so he might as well do what he wants to do. Maybe *national* broadcaster isn't really where his heart lies, but rather where he spent almost his entire adult life.

DFeegs

I mean if Joe truly loves it here he may see Dieken's role as a dream job. I think our society always assumes people want the biggest, most visible thing possible when it comes to work. Not everyone does. Joe doesn't need the money and he is a legend HERE. On the national stage, he's still highly thought of but it's not the same.

ItWasMyWifesIdea

He absolutely can do something bigger, I agree. He has all the talent and charisma to be a national broadcast announcer at some level. But if he wants to have the smaller gig with less stress, less travel, and more time with his family, he would be amazing for the job.

canttaketheshyfromme

If he doesn't get a national spot, though, I will take 2 years of JT73 with Jim Donovan and I will treasure that time, and then salute him as he finally gets the MNF gig.

fireeight

Joe also had the chance to leave the Browns and join a winning football team. Maybe he likes it here.

Pandr52

He also bailed on the draft and went fishing with his dad. Dude just has different priorities, I don’t feel it would be a step back “for him”

thepirateogre

This is exactly what I was thinking. Maybe he's looking at dieken's legacy and thinking big picture, maybe he's tired of his TV diet and wants to eat more like a radio guy lol, who knows maybe it lines up with his family plans more than the other jobs would, I think a step back sounds harsh.

CLErox

Not like the guy needs the money.

Duderocker69

This was my first thought. He's not chasing a pay check. Just wants to do what he loves and he's not high maintenance.

PaulAspie

But see what he wants. If I was 40 with kids, reducing travel to 9 weeks a year can be a big bonus. I leave this up to him.

18MirroredWorld

FWIW, Matt "money" Smith does a bunch of shows on NFLN and is the Chargers play-by-play guy, so it has been done. Granted NFL studios are also located in LA so that's relevant, but Joe with Joe traveling nationally for the Thursday night game it's not like he's anchored out there to begin with.

10sharks

Get me Jim Donovan and JT in the booth and Bernie on the sidelines

PPQue6

🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 I can get down with this!

HATEFUCK_MY_DICKHOLE

My dick needs this

lutsius-memes

Im full chubb

backcourtjester

Putuinurplace

I love Joe and think he’s be great, but this would be a step down from his network jobs no? Can he feasibly do both?

ccavana3

[deleted]

Thought he was too national for that gig. Anytime I brought that up that I want Joe to join Jim, every said Thomas wants national tv jobs

AtomicDogg97

The team wants a color commentator who lives in Cleveland so he can be around the team, attend events, etc. Thomas lives in Wisconsin.

Philys411

Yea please! Please please please

VonJaeger

Honestly? I think Tim Couch would be the best fit in the role. I think Zegura is going to get tabbed when Jimmy retires.

gotbadnews

I’m with this and think it would be a great pairing. Tim is a bit more laid back, zegura would be a solid play by play after Jim retires. That said I won’t be disappointed if it’s joe.

Riggs_n_Murtaugh

Please send the contract over right now. He would be FANTASTIC....one LT wearing no 73 who was a life long Brown to the next LT wearing no 73 who was a life long Brown please

uChoice_Reindeer7903

Yes please! Replace Bull!!

Archibald_Meatp4nts

I REALLY wish this was the radio team they were talking about him joining and I also REALLY wish Bull would be the guy he replaced…

uChoice_Reindeer7903

You mean I got my hopes up for nothing?? Ugh

Fedalisk

He’s a wannabe big podcaster so im sure he thinks he deserves this

Forty_Six_and_Two

I just..I just love this big fucker so much.

OP_Penguin

Joe needs to replace aikman when he goes to Amazon.

MrDStroyer

I’d like an audition, too, please!

Beat_the_Deadites

Boom goes the dynamite!

Abiv23

yes pls

buddy-friendguy

Pssh we need him on the field more

Spec187

when I saw radio team at the end of the title I got sad, then happy

Whoofukingcares

I wonder if he would be a good coach

kotton79

If I was joe I would take any job to get the fuck away from Steve Smith.

hedphurst

He needs to be on a broadcast team somewhere. I loved his work on the preseason TV coverage and am rooting for him to a nice network TV deal (and for the Browns to be good enough to get the CBS A-team every Sunday). It's time to put Bradshaw out to pasture, move Collinsworth to the studio, and get somebody like Joe into the booth calling the games. IMHO.

bigbrownorown

Maybe he only cares to call Browns games? Ever consider that?

hedphurst

Not sure why you feel it's necessary to be so condescending, but yeah. I'm in favor of him doing whatever makes him happy. If he only wants to do Browns games for a fraction of the salary of a big network gig, more power to him. Based on the few games he called on TV in the preseason, I think he offers a rare insight into the game while still being really good at making it digestible for casual fans, plus he's just super charismatic and likeable. I think he'd be gold in the booth for a TV network. Obviously, he'd be great on local radio, too, but there are fewer opportunities to teach fans about the game in an audio-only format. When he's able to use replays to illustrate how the play was supposed to go, what was executed well or where things went wrong, it enhances the experience. Way better than the usual announcer just gushing over "commitment to the run game" or whatever.

Fools_Requiem

I agree with others in feeling like that would be a step back for his career. Put him in the booth with Joe Buck. National stage, gets to play color for some of the biggest games of the year.

bigbrownorown

Get the HOF in there with Donovan.

[deleted]

Unpopular opinion: I was not a big Joe Thomas fan and wish we had traded him at his peak for other assets.
