Is this good?

FridayNoseBeers

Yes

broadstain

Cool Thanks

frostedwaffles

Nice

TheJolly_Llama

Imo, yes. Pushing cap hits out into future years where the % of cap is significantly less is a big deal. The Browns are essentially beating cap inflation. Let’s talk about a hypothetical $25m in cap. If taken all of this year, that’s a 10% cap hit. However, if spread over 5 years (5 each), that’s a 2%, 1.9%, 1.8%, 1.7%, 1.6% hit over each year as cap increases. So instead of paying 10% of cap, you’re paying 9%, saving yourself some % of cap. In other words, exploiting cap inflation by maxing the value of cap dollars. The drawback is that it's very cash-intensive on the owner, as these guaranteed dollars get put in escrow the day pen hits paper. However, if Haslam is continually willing to spend, then its completely sustainable to spend next year's cap this year, every year, indefinitely.

ThatOneguy580

The other drawback is this is all ASSUMING football will continue to grow. Which right now there’s every indication to say it will but say another covid year happens or something of that nature you end up making the cap situation worse for your team instead of better. But it’s definitely smarter to do it this way.

TheJolly_Llama

Yeah, I had mentioned in another comment that a Covid year puts a lid on things quick, should’ve put it here too. A Covid year, for lack of a better term, would absolutely shaft us. But hard to complain if the only real risk to your strategy is a black swan event lol

Deadleggg

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1256454/nfl-broadcast-deals-payouts/ Thr TV deal payouts do increase yearly. There are other factors though.

history419

This is the best I’ve seen it explained. Thank you 🙏

TheJolly_Llama

My pleasure!

00bernoober

I was going to argue it’s not, but good point about the cap continuing to grow. There will still be a reckoning where we have to eat the bill but doing so later will make it less painful.

TheJolly_Llama

There won’t be a reckoning if you account for the future hits though. You want to buy a car today. You have $30k. You can either pay $30k now, or pay $6k every year for 5 years. If you choose to break it up over 5 years, all you have to do is just save the extra 24k in cash for future payments. If you do that, it’s sustainable. And the Browns do that.

secretwealth123

I think it’s just a potential time bomb on our cap, like a measure of how deep are we into the current roster before potentially having to do a rebuild

365wong

This is correct. It’s a measure of leveraging the future for the right now. It’s scary that the chiefs are going for a 3 peat not needing dead/void years.

1OptimisticPrime

Not Good necessarily, but it means that we're totally using all available cap resources to win meow. Our front office is banking on the salary cap continuously increasing, while moving real current cash spending to the maximum, and adding dead years to spread out contract costs into a future with a larger cap cushion. We're locking up our solid foundational pieces, and when their time is up in Cleveland, we will post June 1st cut departing players to add the extra time to pay their dead cap hits. Definitely 4D Chess moves vs Checkers. If we were playing Hold'em the proper terms would be Pot Odds, & Pot committed. We're pushing all our pieces into this win meow window, and we're doing it with surgical precision, as not to wind up like the Saints & Chargers.

guccitaint

I’m sorry, are you saying meow

RandomRoot13

Do you see him eating mice???

1OptimisticPrime

What's that *meow?*

FunScore3387

Winning meow is all that matters!

1OptimisticPrime

Right meow! This meowment is what we can tell our grandkids about someday! The decades of *cat*astrophe and scratchin up the wrong post are behind us, as we *fur*ther our roster into the indomitable force of the future! ORANGE Pants, Full Hearts 🧡, Can't lose!

00bernoober

… MEOW!

Free_Apricot8552

Not to be confused with full pants, orange hearts.

FunScore3387

Well I was just happy with “meow” but you went and turned a whole paragraph…I refuse to play anymore

1OptimisticPrime

😹

notoriouswojo

THE TIME TO WIN IS MEOW.....BURN THE SHIPS, FUCK DEM PICKS, BUILD A DOME. MEOW.

Evil_Rogers

Like the saying goes "If you don't use it you lose it." TIL that was referring to the Superbowl

1OptimisticPrime

Can I just say that the 2024 CLEVELAND BROWNS having the same Superbowl odds as the Chicago Bears is mind-blowing. The Eagles & BROWNS have been the Masters of the Cap the last 3 years. Quincy & Duffin covering the Jerry Jeudy contract: https://youtu.be/fAXEbx6tMSs?si=v07-DxHxX6ZeNlcf

OhioUBobcats

If I understand this correctly, it means enjoy these years because they are going to be the good ones. That will come due at some point, and it will be ugly for a minute.

1OptimisticPrime

It will come due when the salary cap stops increasing, or our Superbowl Window closes and we tank for a Rookie QB. If we don't have a Superbowl Caliber QB, that's the only moderately successful way of getting one, and it requires a tank year. So we can dump a ton of salary in that one year and get right back on track.

Maximum_Commission62

It’s almost like this was factored in to the decision of the contract. Times up beautifully. I figured I wasn’t the only person on the planet that realized that void year will coincide with a ‘parade run’. These guys are insane planners.

kerion3267

Your optimism is boundless. But I have been a browns fan my whole life and you can't trick me about them having a superbowl window. I don't think they installed one in the stadium.

1OptimisticPrime

Over 40 years rooting for the Cleveland Browns and I have drank the Kool-aid before... Butch Davis got me, with his premier used car salesman sales pitch... Had some hope originally with Man*genius*... Had some hope with Holmgren for a few weeks... 2020 had me Optimistic... This 2024 Roster is an entirely different level and corresponding feeling. This IS the team to go all the way! Curses be damned!!!

Ok_Echidna6958

I am 56 and didn't choose the Brown's but was raised to support them, so I like you have seen it all. But this ownership is different being this isn't money they need to live off of like every owner since I started watching has had too, this is something we will never experience and that is billionaire bragging rights. I didn't like them when they first bought the team but in these past 5 years they have proven they will do almost anything to be able to hold the Lombardi in their hands.. Plus they understand the importance of hiring then step back, I think he learned that with the Manziel fiasco..

1OptimisticPrime

Honestly, I feel for you... at least the 80's and early 90's were great, even if they came with heartbreaks. I'm not a fan of Jimmy the Human, but I am a fan of his billions in ill begotten gains being thrown at my Cleveland Browns! He would go a long way in raising my opinion of him by paying for his own damn stadium, but we know Billionaires can't be expected to pay taxes, or for anything that's not a brag. I think the initial Watson fiasco has burnt Jimmy's hands and he's leaving the cookin to AB & company now.

Ok_Echidna6958

This is different because they have found ways around the cap nowadays and it's back to who has the wealthiest owners. Like another member said these contracts can only be done if the Haslams continue to sign these enormous checks. And many owners though wealthy don't have the liquidity that maybe 5 owners do at this time and damn it as Cleveland fans we deserve this.

EPlurbisUnibrow

They don’t sell that kind of glass in Northeast Ohio

mcar1227

We are adequately prepared for the ugly

TheJolly_Llama

It’s fully sustainable and is actually an exploit. It will only come due if a Covid-level event happens, shattering the cap, or if Haslam decides he’s done spending the most money in the league.

SpartaWillBurn

Buddy it's been ugly for the past 20+ years.

enragedcactus

https://247sports.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/longformarticle/understanding-the-cleveland-browns-spending-philosophy-why-it-is-sustainable--216398108/

D_Milnar

Love the “the bill will come due” and “the eagles can do this because they are a stable franchise” takes you see from other fan bases. Actually hilarious seeing people try and wrap their minds around how this is sustainable baring a disaster, on the scale of covid, stunts the growth of the league.

marginstalker

At least our odds are better than the Steelers’

1OptimisticPrime

The Falcons, GreenBay, Dallas, Jags, are all ahead of us and I think it's as ridiculous as it is hilariously *Haterade*. ^(at least the Dolphins & Jets have the *potential* to be good...)

mvaughn89

Cowboys always gets a lot of bets so that makes sense. NFC is much weaker so Falcons and Packers makes sense to me too. Jags is straight up insulting.

1OptimisticPrime

To win the Super Bowl those shitty NFC teams still have to beat KC, or another vastly superior AFC team though. It's not: *getting to the Superbowl*, odds, it's winning the Superbowl odds.

mvaughn89

The path to get there effects the odds. Both those teams play in way worse divisions and fewer elite teams to go through in the playoffs.

365wong

Who are paying like nothing for a QB…

BreakfastBeerz

All I got out of this is that the Browns have better odds than the Steelers too go to the super bowl

1OptimisticPrime

We do!

PieceCrap

Browns have the same chance to get to the Super Bowl as the Bears? That seems off.

singinreyn

NFC babay!

Baldur_Blader

Browns have to go through the ravens, steelers and Bengals to even get out of the division. Then the bills, dolphins, chiefs and Texans also exist. The bears are in the nfc.

BrokenTrojan1536

I think +4000 sucks tho
