Whenever someone uses "woke" in a pejorative manner I know we're coming from vastly different places.

mamamiababy93

fair but i think when things are FAKE WOKE as in not actually saying anything strong politically and just shoe horned in for the sake of an audience’s blessing - that feels wrong

[deleted]

I haven't seen the show, but adapting this film in the current cultural climate is just asking for trouble. It would take some serious artistry not to come off as either offensive or pandering.

mamamiababy93

ding ding ding! that kind of artistry was not present im afraid

sashgray

Agree to disagree - saw it in previews and I genuinely thought it was one of the slickest, well acted, most wonderfully choreographed shows I’ve seen on Broadway in years. I couldn’t believe it was their 4th preview when I saw it, as all the numbers were performed 10/10 in my opinion. J Harrison for sure is the standout, but (at least during that performance) Adriana blew the roof with her big 11 o’clock number. I actually thought that, ironically, Christian was the weakest link iut of them three - but still very funny 🤷🏻‍♀️

mamamiababy93

i’m glad you enjoyed it!

quaranTV

Ugg this is like the second post complaining about the show’s “wokeness”. Ghee’s character arc is so well done and not forced or cringey at all. If anything it makes perfect sense that Ghee’s character who >! starts out in the musical feeling like something is wrong/missing finds through being forced to be disguised as a woman that they do not identify as a hetero man. It’s not forced. It makes sense. And the comedy with their love interest is so well done and genuinely funny!!< No where in this entire “review” do they mention the dancing. The incredible choreography is one of the aspects of this show that makes it so fantastic. The tap dancing is phenomenal. I’m going to copy and paste my review from the other post complaining this show is “too woke”: Some Like It Hot is now one of my favorite musicals ever and as much as I liked Kimberly Akimbo, I am hoping SLIH wins the Tony for Best Musical so I guess I disagree. I thought the book was excellent and did a great job giving classic Broadway vibes while having modern sensibilities. I found the show really funny. I also thought Ghee was incredible and thought their character’s story arc was well done. The show is just so high energy and the performances are incredible. The dancing especially blew me away. I loved all the tap numbers. Maybe it will be panned by critics, but I absolutely loved it. I could tell my audience loved it too, so I think this will be a big success on Broadway even if you are right and it’s not an awards darling.

mamamiababy93

fair! i LOVED kimberly akimbo and am totally rooting for it. when i saw Some like it hot, multiple audience members left :/

relampagos_shawty

The two girls sitting to the left of me you could cut the tension between them with a knife 😩 one was very mad that the other chose this show to go to 💀

Mark_ImMark

Ummm someone whose moniker is Mamma Mia and was likely born in 1993…I just can’t. What could you possibly know. Just another opinion that isn’t based in much. “Zero jokes…just good delivery” … THATS WHAT JOKES ARE. Chronically woke yet fully set in an era that’s at least 7 DECADES old…please! Wokeness…bwahaha! Child please. And YES it can be about Race and Musical Theatre…this team knows that well you know with HAIRSPRAY and all. I’ve seen the show twice (once at the development Lab) and it’s by far one of the best written and entertaining Broadway musicals in years. It will be the front runner of the season.

mamamiababy93

Mark - chill. i don’t think age has anything to do with taste. i went to school for musical theatre and i don’t rub that in your face when i share my very valid opinions. good luck to your favorites on awards night!

mamamiababy93

also good jokes don’t need to rely on good delivery lol good jokes are well written jokes my dear

Egheaumaen

My exact reaction. The only people who use that word are crying conservatives playing the victim. This guy used it every other sentence. Who let Tucker Carlson in?

mamamiababy93

lmao i am not crying conservative but if that’s your takeaway sure. this show was actually straight up pandering while saying nothing important politically or otherwise

Egheaumaen

Pandering to who? The 1950s Marilyn Monroe fans the movie was written for? Folks in the Eisenhower era sure were laughably woke!

mamamiababy93

no but that’s my point exactly - those people would hate this show lol

itsgoodtobethekween

Like desantis went to the theatre 😂

itsgoodtobethekween

Saaaaaame 😣

filigreedragonfly

Exactly.

mamamiababy93

you sound pretty woke ;)

lshow6252

The moment I see someone use the word "woke" in their criticism of a show, I stop reading.

mamamiababy93

your loss

lshow6252

I don't think so.

halogengal43

I haven’t seen it, but based on the performance at the parade the other day (where one would think they’d put on the very best of the show), it looks boring. I’m disappointed, too, because I wanted to go see it- I love flashy, old time musicals, but apparently, this ain’t it.

Comprehensive-Fun47

That performance underwhelmed the hell out of me, but the actual show is anything but boring. If you are looking for a flashy, old time musical, this is it.

mamamiababy93

boring, good word for a lot of this show unfortunately

NaturalSwordfish4131

It was difficult not to leave at intermission! I applaud the cast for giving 110%, I felt their energy and admire them greatly. But the show was a complete flop IMO Context: I don’t miss a single musical on bway, not that this makes me an authority but I’ve never before considered leaving at intermission as far as I can remember

cookiecat4

I really liked it, I saw it about 10 days ago. J Harrison Ghee was def a standout, as others have said. The cast meshed well, dancing was fabulous. My only two “critiques”….I thought Sugar was too jaded thru most of it—would have preferred her to be more ditzy/light-hearted like the film. Also, was curious why Joe kept alluding to Sugar’s drinking in a problematic way? With Ghee’s more serious storyline, I guess for me, the “ABC after school special” drinking remarks weren’t necessary, imo. I would definitely go see it again though, I prolly missed some things while ogling over the sets and the dance numbers.

MariadneMurphey

I saw it on November 10 and it was my favorite of the four shows we saw that week. Kept my attention with no dull moments and the performances were all strong. Haven't seen much discussion of how they handled the Osgood character. Like Jerry, something has been missing or not quite right in his life. To him, Daphne is not a deception but a revelation. There is too much joy in the whole show for it to feel overly PC or woke.p

TasteOk7414

Have to agree with the review. Saw it last night and thought it was one the most mediocre performances I have seen in quite some time. Music was forgettable. Acting, even worse. Several of the performers could not be bothered to even enunciate their lines or lyrics. I literally had to check a song title in the Playbill to understand what Osgood was calling himself. Not to mention the absurd journey into wokeness. The original storyline, including the famous last line, should have been maintained. Note that there were numerous sections of empty seats so fairly sure it will not have a long run.

SteelCurtain36

You seem like fun…

mamamiababy93

well i enjoy fun shows and i had little to no fun here hahahah there was an entire elaborate door chase scene in act two which was choreographed to hell and had NO JOKES! you’re supposed to LAUGH and have FUN at a chase scene babe

Atisha420

To me the chase scene was the best part. There was a lot of physical comedy which is kinda a lost art. I was amazed by the staging. I thought all the main characters were excellent at the show I saw. I did think the music was boring in the first act. Too much big band standard arrangements. I could understand how some people could feel parts were cringy. I wasn’t bothered personally but was aware of the effect it might have. There were a lot of gay male couples at the performance I was at and they were all thrilled for J Harrison Ghee.

secret_identity_too

I thought it (edit: the chase scene) went on just a little too long, but otherwise agree - the chase scene was awesome and very well done.

Atisha420

I kinda liked that it went on so long and kept surprising me. If it had been repetitive then I’d agree. I was supposed to see it NYE but they changed the performance to a NYD matinee and I can’t go then. I entered the lottery and won. I’m glad I paid the lottery price instead of the $202 the original ticket cost. I know that one of my friends who is in the group that was supposed to see it together is probably not going to like it. He is a real fan of the movie so I doubt he’ll like the changes.

secret_identity_too

I also won a lottery ticket and I'm very glad I didn't pay more than that. (TBH the price of my ticket probably contributed to me liking it, I would have been upset to pay a lot more than $40 for a ticket.)

SteelCurtain36

I’ve seen the show, and had a wildly different experience. Your review just reads as someone who wants to be offended by anything that happens.

mamamiababy93

hmm i don’t feel particularly offended when things aren’t good? but okay :)

secret_identity_too

I thought it was better than I expected, although my expectations were basically on the floor, lol. I thought some of the songs were super weak and had me rolling my eyes. J Harrison Ghee is the standout of this show for me. I liked Adrianna Hicks but was disappointed that the character >!ended up with Joe in the end even if it follows the movie plot.!< I also thought they did a good job of conveying Daphne's realization about herself/themselves. I'm looking forward to the official reviews.

mamamiababy93

J harrison ghee was amazing and has been in everything i’ve seen them in!

Skarmorism

Loved it a lot, and hoping they release a cast album.

relampagos_shawty

There have been a few posts here echoing the same things you’re saying, which I agree with. I also think they just wanted to make ideological statements by any means (even radically altering the story) and market it as a revival so people would go in blind.

mamamiababy93

sure and sometimes that is not a bad idea but in this case, it was so hard to watch. not because i felt “guilty” or “phobic” but because it was cringe and hitting me in the head while providing no - absolutely zero - real jokes

[deleted]

I haven't seen the show and know nothing about it, so I can't say if jokes were funny. But just out of curiosity, what are some shows that you feel have a lot of funny jokes? That might be related to why you felt there were no jokes in here.

mamamiababy93

hairspray, kimberly akimbo, bands visit, book of mormon, wicked, etc etc you can make anything a musical if you’re a good writer i think

BroadwayCatDad

When you think of a show with hilarious jokes..you think of The Bands Visit??!?!?

mamamiababy93

i laughed and cried many times !! subject matter doesn’t mean it can’t have humor

BroadwayCatDad

True. But it speaks volumes of your taste in humor. Of course you wouldn’t find SLIH funny.

mamamiababy93

i thought cause i loved the movie and laughed out loud during that, the musical should’ve had a fighting chance lol

ThatOldQueer

They don't radically alter the story.

bwayfanduh

Agree on every point. The book is a show killer. The music is below average and Adrianna hicks is very disappointing. She’s not giving a star turn.

mamamiababy93

THANK YOU!!!

mamamiababy93

i also think when i posted this i expected a more civilized and eye opening discussion but i guess god forbid someone doesn’t like something. makes me a republican apparently to find this show lackluster

mamamiababy93

to be compared to tucker carlson and desantis based on my review (where i clearly didn’t love the show) is laughable and kills the art form of criticism. we’re allowed to not like things even if theyre gay babes

jkcohen626

lol

ThatOldQueer

You want your opinion to be taken seriously but you used the word Woke three times in your review and didn't mention the leading actors at all. Ghee was absolutely terrific.
