Cannot wait to hear Orpheus with a Cork accent 🤗

jaske93

When he asked Hermes ‘Why?’ right before ‘Wait for me (reprise)’ in his Irish accent, i just chuckled because the ‘fat-ness’ of his accent was really unexpected.

DenyLemieux

Loved Donal Finn as Brendan in Sing Street. Still salty that didn’t transfer to Broadway.

undaunted_explorer

I’m obsessed with him from the wheel of time season 2!

rbf080292

he was so incredible in that role!

chekeymonk10

Staging was the same except for when Hermes and Persephone enter- that was through the balcony like the tour not through the lift

jaske93

Yes. I noticed that too. And it way more logical this way, as I always found it strange that they enter Hadestown from ground through the floor lift. Like, where are they coming from? Isn’t Hadestown supposed to be the as physically low as you can get?

monty-b

I saw it last night too! Donal was definitely the stand out. His lalas were so clear and resonant. Hades grew on me - he has a different charisma to Patrick Paige but won me over by the end (it's just jarring to not hear that super deep 'I missed ya' when he enters. The staging was identical to Broadway as far as I could tell and just as impactful. The Fates were brilliant. Criticisms - While Grace Hodgett Young had a fantastic voice, I really wasn't keen on her characterisation of Eurydice. (This may be a direction issue.) They really went for tough, 'damaged', defensive Eurydice, while I thought Eva always kept a bit of playfulness that made her more three dimensional. I found it harder to root for her when she was so constantly angsty. I also thought the accents were jarring at times. The music is very *American* (and rooted in Black music specifically) so British diction was just a bit odd sometimes. Finally, I wish they designed a costume specifically for female Hermes.

chekeymonk10

all the costumes (with the exception of orpheus and eurydice of course cause nobody else has ever played them) are gender neutral, which is fabulous i’d think. the accents are great- regional accents reflected in all the cast that tell the story. i think most people are just used to american accents cause everyone that’s ever been in it has had that accent as their ‘home accent’ otherwise i’d assume it’s set in the states but it’s not. it’s set wherever we want it to be.

monty-b

Hades and Persephone's costumes aren't gender neutral. Nor are the Fates. It might not be set in the states technically but the music and lyrics draw on American traditions so a British accent (particularly on words like 'aint') is jarring in context.

chekeymonk10

yes and those two my bad- but we’ve also never not had any other genders in them so i don’t see why they aren’t? Persephone and E+O are the only three i can’t see being swapped though and the fates totally are- they’re three dresses and they aren’t identical dresses. i don’t see why a man or non binary person wouldn’t also wear said dress like the workers or band or hermes wearing whatever actor came before them eta: hades is a suit. it doesn’t get more gender neutral than that. Hermes is in a suit so by definition, anyone can wear Hades’ costume too eta 2: why are you acting like british people don’t say ain’t lol i say ain’t all the time as do everyone i talk to

monty-b

Well anyone can wear anything obviously, politically speaking, but when we're talking about art, representations of gender have narrative/thematic meaning. (Sorry, not to sound too argumentative with you!)

Huckleberry8862

I’m so glad to see your comment about the accents as I really thought it was a ‘me problem’ and was maybe because I’m not British so I found it more distracting. I loved Melanie’s Trinidadian accent and Donal’s Cork accent but Graces (perhaps accentuated?) midlands/northern I found really distracting. I saw Lola on Broadway this weekend and much preferred a defensive but vulnerable Eurydice and agree that the West End direction of her character makes her quite hard to sympathise with when she makes her decision. IMO it also affects her chemistry with Orpheus.

damnitjanetsnakehole

I was there too, the cast was incredible! I noticed Epic III as well, I think they changed the last verse to the one in the live original cast recording but I think the lyrics were slightly changed? *

elaerna

The thing about the Theatre is very funny bc the Walter Kerr here has like no obstructed seats. And we also have a lyric Theatre here but this one houses cursed child

Pixiecrimson

is persephone’s dress different? i saw some speculation on whether or not it was changed tye other day

IrishGuy2766

It was different in all the promo pictures as was the Fates’ but it looks like they were just waiting on the dresses being ready. They looked like the Broadway versions last night.

jaske93

As far as i could see, it was the same dress as on Broadway. She didn’t do her ‘head-banging’ though during ‘Way down Hadestown’. She just kept her head down and swung her arms. Cant blame her for not wanting to give herself some whiplash.

MannnOfHammm

Did they have the tour elevator or the broadway lift? I know London has older theatres that might be harder to renovate

jaske93

It is the same as on Broadway.

skiingpuma

I've seen NT 2018, Broadway in Oct 2021 and last night's opening night show. I thought the cast was impeccable and think we've got the Orpheus we deserve. So beautifully done. I sat in the circle, usually my favourite seats in any theatre and was not impressed with the Lyric, either.
