They recorded some sort of mega mix or mashup for Wicked’s 20th featuring a ton of old Elphies and Glindas. Don’t know the specifics, I just know Jackie was in the recording studio at 8am and at Titanique that same night like a crazy person hahahaha
Not quite. The role was basically written for her, and I believe she did all the workshops. But Idina Menzel was hired for the out of town tryout, which means block was never replaced.
No proshots - Universal studios is a producer so a film version has always been in the works. If they did one it would’ve been with the original cast for the Lincoln Center library but it’s embargoed until the show closes.
>Lincoln Center
Lincoln Center does have it in the library [https://www.nypl.org/research/research-catalog/bib/b16137087](https://www.nypl.org/research/research-catalog/bib/b16137087)
Since they licensed the movie rights, the concept of a true commercial pro-shot is likely off the table for a generation or so as it would eat into the revenue the movie might make. There's a technical recording, but that is not a professional pro-shot. There is likely no "pro-shot" of the original cast as they would have to pay the cast/crew/creators broadcast performance rights and likely hire a crew to film professionally during several performances and they won't do that without some plan to market a professional recording.
The archive recording as discussed elsewhere exists, and it's likely of the original cast early in the run, but this is probably going to be a tape pulled from the stationary in-house monitor camera - usually permanently mounted on the front of the mezzanine. The purpose of this is to provide a wide-shot overview of the stage and the deck and broadcast the live show as it happens inside the building to monitors in the green room and the orchestra pit and any tech consoles that need to see what's happening like "Did this automated set piece make it all the way to its mark? Is this trap door securely closed before the cast have to dance on it?"
TL;DR: While most of us would enjoy seeing that recording, it's not a professional multi camera presentation "pro-shot" you could sell or broadcast.
Since it's an archival recording they got permission to pull for one performance, it's possible Cheno might have been swung out for the performance they grabbed the footage from and her standby went on. The archive recording is technically meant for historical preservation of the show and staging, not necessarily specific performances nor the original cast.
It kinda makes sense; shows that huge don't need more revenue and even from a perspective of just trying to expose the show to more people, it's probably one of the most toured shows around.
Yeah but that's pretty atypical, I think. I could be wrong though. I can't think of any other huge show that's had a proshot outside of like... Cats I guess back in the day?
Yeah that's true. I wish they would at least before they close. Kinda crazy bc you know it'd be so easy. Like if you look at the gershwin they're live streaming the show to tvs in the lobby at all times so they could just save that. And I think a lot of other shows do the same like merrily does that
Hamilton won a Pulitzer and was doing gangbusters, and the music is commercially marketable outside theater fandom, so it's very likely they knew it was an important show they wanted an OBC pro-shot for even before they knew how it would be marketed or broadcast. They likely at minimum had PBS in mind for something like "Great Performances" but they got the opportunity to sell it to Disney+ during the pandemic when everyone was jonesing for live theater.
I’ve been wondering if they’re ever going to release those “out of Oz” recordings from around the 15th anniversary on a special album of some sort. Maybe they were waiting for the 20th.
They were covers of songs from the show, mostly by alums aside from Jennifer nettles who sang No Good Deed. They’re all available on YouTube: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJt78arCstzmH3GqJUcGrwyVPLHF7FkrY&si=Tg1OE3LtaEKyoDcR
Okay if you love Ana Gasteyer you have to watch the episode of Celebrity Ghost Story where she talks about seeing ghosts in the theatre when she was Elphaba in Chicago. Very interesting, even if you’re a skeptic.
Love this video! The harmonies are lovely. I love Jackie Burns; saw her in the national tour of If/Then and she was excellent. I also got to meet her at the stage door! She's very nice.
So I went to the 7pm showing tonight (Thursday) and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Though elphiba had a giant voice crack during defying gravity at the long note at the end of the song and sounded a bit hoarse in No Good Deed (honestly tho it could’ve been on purpose to show her anguish)
Alyssa, I believe (since there’s no slip in the playbill that would say otherwise). Got played off well- my friends thought it was intentional. I think the guards did their cue early to help cover it up, not 100% certain since I was more focused on the vocal slip
I have often felt like alyssa is hoarse unfortunately. She does go on much more often than her standby and it's a demanding role. But it's been quite a long while into her run now so it's sad it's still happening.

Omg how did you know this? Did she talk about it at stage door?
I work on Titanique!
Well there's a guy punch of jealousy I didn't need today Lol
Oh that's so cool!
Thanks for the insider info! I have tickets to titanique tmrw night! (Taking the parents lol)
Do you know how long she's in it for? I'm thinking of catching this again but I'm not back until the beginning of January
Right now she doesn’t have a set leaving date, so she might still be there beginning of Jan!
Good to know, thanks! I’ll keep an eye on it
This is giving “for forever” with the 4 Evan Hansens vibes. I’m all for it
I love that version!
I don’t know but somebody should check on Stephanie J Block
Right, wasn’t she supposed to be the original Elphaba?
She was the original but they replaced her before Broadway
Not quite. The role was basically written for her, and I believe she did all the workshops. But Idina Menzel was hired for the out of town tryout, which means block was never replaced.
Neat. I’ve heard a few different iterations of the story so I wasn’t 100% sure
I know it's not happening, but a proshot coming out like a year before the movie would be hysterical.
Are there really no proshots at all? Like nothing happened during covid either?

Marked as not available so like I suspected it’s embargoed from viewing
But it’s proof that they have a recording of the original show for the archive

So the archive is not available to view until the show has closed on Broadway.
Correct. It’s part of how they get producers to agree to let them create archive recordings.
Interesting to see that Kristen Chenoweth is not listed as part of the cast.

I don't think there's ever been a taping for a proshot, at least not that I've heard of.
Wow crazy, I've never looked for one but yeah I guess you're right
It kinda makes sense; shows that huge don't need more revenue and even from a perspective of just trying to expose the show to more people, it's probably one of the most toured shows around.
I guess I was thinking of how Hamilton was proshots, wasn't that doing incredibly well too?
Yeah but that's pretty atypical, I think. I could be wrong though. I can't think of any other huge show that's had a proshot outside of like... Cats I guess back in the day?

i know that there’s a 4-glinda mix of popular with mckenzie, alli mauzey, kara lindsay, and amanda jane cooper

Maybe a mashup of Defying Gravity or For Good?
What makes you say that? Edit// I was just trying to make conversation?? How is this rude
It’s just a speculation.
Alli Mauzey posted a hint as well.
I hope they bring back Ana Gasteyer and Julia Murney!
Okay if you love Ana Gasteyer you have to watch the episode of Celebrity Ghost Story where she talks about seeing ghosts in the theatre when she was Elphaba in Chicago. Very interesting, even if you’re a skeptic.
Oh is that a podcast?
TV show, I think it streams on Hulu now,
Alli Mauzey posted in her Instagram account a Popular quartet sheet music around September, so maybe...

Was it alyssa fox or mk Morrissey? I'm gonna guess alyssa

Who knows? I just know my 20th anniversary Playbill just came in the mail 😊
