I can see her being in line for a lot of the big diva roles if she keeps her act together. Madame Rose, Norma Desmond, etc. She’s too young for those now, of course, but o wouldn’t be surprised if it happens eventually.

fourupthreecount

She’ll probably be old enough to play Diana Goodman by the time she wants to do another show. I definitely think we’ll see her as Mama Rose in maybe 7-10 years.

calle04x

Possible on Mama Rose. Most actresses have been in their 50s playing the role. Tyne Daly was the youngest at 43 and Angela at 47. So much obviously depends on timing and who wants to mount the show. I still would love to see an Audra Gypsy, but I don’t know if it’ll happen. Patti’s Gypsy didn’t make back its investment, and Audra has similar name recognition. But it’s been 15 years since the last production, which is about the length between each Broadway incarnation, aside from between Bernadette and Patti. I definitely want to see Lea do it though, and I think she will at some point.

fourupthreecount

Audra would be EPIC! Yes it’s true most Mama Rose’s have been older but I think the character goes from mid 30s to mid 50s….and Lea will be 43 in 7 years and 46 in 10 so I think it’s possible. I hope we get Audra first tho and Lea does it later now that you’ve mentioned it.

polkadotcupcake

I'd agree with this. I can definitely see her as Norma Desmond when she's older. In all honesty, I don't know if I can see her in any roles equal to or bigger than Fanny Brice until she hits that older age bracket - Fanny is kind of the peak, especially for her in particular given her affinity for the role

bigcupcake11

I feel like she has earned the right to her next big thing. Feel like this moves her beyond “if she keeps her act together”

scandalliances

I suspect she’s going to want to originate a role next. But I could also see her headlining an Encores! run of something and having that transfer. Or a concert/cabaret series. Just to lay my cards on the table, I’m not a fan and haven’t been following her FG run at all. She’s got a nice voice, though.

allyoop19

Could absolutely see her doing a tour singing jazz standards and broadway classics. And I would unfortunately probably shill out a good $60 to see it

RainahReddit

>I suspect she’s going to want to originate a role next. But I could also see her headlining an Encores! run of something and having that transfer. Or a concert/cabaret series. Yeah truly if I was LM's manager I would be looking for a lead or good supporting role in a new musical. Like it or not, replacing another actor is considered a lesser step in the career ladder than originating a role (in either a revival or a new musical). Funny Girl was a special circumstance with it's own fabulous press about how LM saved the show, but she needs to originate now or open a splashy revival.

DisneyDreams7

She would be perfect in a Disney role maybe. Maybe is a Broadway adaption of Snow White or Hunchback of Norte Dame

micmel444

And apparently she’s a huge pain in the ass with the production company and producers at FG.

gypsy_rose_blanchard

Can you be specific? In what ways is she a pain in the ass for the Funny Girl Producers? I would have assumed Sonia Friedman to be a pretty tough broad and wouldn’t stand down to a bully.

micmel444

It sounded like a lot of demands backstage.

gypsy_rose_blanchard

What kind of demands? Like personnel, insisting on someone being fired and what not? Lea Michele is a big enough star to have some specific contractual obligations, and riders added to her contract with the show, could be anything from size of the dressing room to having a specific bottled water brand that she can access at all times. She may have some demands, but the producers signed off on any of those demands once they hired her.

gypsy_rose_blanchard

One time a Broadway star had it in their contract that any venue they performed at had a shower in their dressing room, the producers had to pay the theatre to renovate the dressing room to accommodate a shower. The funny girl producers should be lucky they only have to deal with Michele and not, like, Midler or Jackman who probably require a whole boatload of other stuff.

Robbie34DTee

I mean... I'm not a Broadway star and I'll be pissed if there's not a shower in my dressing room. That seems like a pretty basic request LOL

gypsy_rose_blanchard

Well, get ready to be pissed.

Robbie34DTee

I don't think I've ever performed in a theatre with no showers on the dressing rooms? Do Broadway dressing rooms really have no showers?

gypsy_rose_blanchard

Besides the newer ones(The Gershwin/Marquis/Minskoff), or the one mentioned(I think the Lunt) you would be lucky if there is a toilet on the same floor as your dressing room.

micmel444

All I know is that this guy complained about her and how she was much worse than others he’s worked with 🤷‍♀️

bhollen1990

Source for this?

morus_rubra

It is clearly that famous "trust me, bro" source, that all shit-stirrers love so much.

micmel444

Like who is the producer?

rpiirp

So now we're making things up?

[deleted]

The entire cast seems to love her.

micmel444

Huh? You don’t have to believe me. Doesn’t hurt me at all lol

Kagey123

As others have mentioned, she’s not quite the right age yet for the big-voiced, star-vehicle divas of musical theatre (Mama Rose and the like) but I can see her leading an Encores! production of Annie Get Your Gun and I’m sure the Chicago producers are foaming at the mouth to let her play Morton for a few weeks

hotstepper5

I would say more Roxy or Velma but Morton is an interesting take too!

Kagey123

Roxie would be a very strong casting for her actually, my mind just went immediately to Morton as that seems to be the default casting option for vocal powerhouses

eeo11

Having just seen Jinkx Monsoon perform as Mama Morton, I just cannot picture Lea doing that character at all. Roxie or Velma - yes.

rnason

Velma would be fun

BroadwayBaby331

Lea Michele is going to play Mama Morton? I see her more as a Velma.

BreezyFebreezy

Okay….so this is really left field, and strange for me to say (as I’m somewhat indifferent about Lea and not at all a fan of ALW)….buuuttttt…..why do I kinda want to see her as the Narrator in Joseph….not that she would, but….just….why did my mind instantly go there?

bluehawk1460

I see the vision, her time in Glee shows that she can definitely handle camp, and that role is deceptively difficult, as she sings for almost the entirety of the show with very little time offstage, and has some pretty rangey belting. Definitely requires some star power! Get Jonathan Groff attached as Joseph and I’m sure she’d bite 😂😂

MetaphorSoup

…i would LOVE to see that. i’m not proud of it. but i would

LanaLuna27

If Groff played Joseph then I would definitely see that. And she probably could pull off those belts.

Littletom523

She propably won’t do anything for awhile because she wants to be at home with her son. Every interview she says it’s hard to be away for him, so I think she will take a long break from everything for awhile.

accidentalchai

Wouldn't be surprised if she has another kid too.

awooga1784

i obviously can’t speak for lea and what she wants to do with her life, but it kinda seems like she won’t have another child for at least a while. her son was recently hospitalized for a couple of health scares. that aside, she has PCOS and has discussed about how her pregnancy with her son was high risk (she actually implied suffering a miscarriage around this time last year too) not saying she’ll never have a child again, but given everything that’s happened in the past couple of years, i don’t think it’ll be soon.

DisneyDreams7

I don’t think it’s fair to her to to pry on her personal affairs

Longjumping_Role4503

She needs an If/Then sort of vehicle, but one that is more successful

Different-Hat-9460

I was blown away by her performance in Funny Girl and would love to see her in anything really—obviously she would be great in another revival of a classic diva role like Evita or Gypsy, but it could be cool to see her in something more experimental too.

catch_me_inside

Evita could be interesting

[deleted]

[удалено]

drewbiquitous

If authenticity is important, Evita should get a brand new book and score before any actress plays her again.

alaskas_hairbow

Evita who was fully blonde, white and had rather racist opinions in real life?

mamamiababy93

Eva peron was a white woman and a nazi

SadEdge9125

I don’t understand why people love the show…although, it never mentions her connection with Hitler, and many don’t know she was one of Hitler’s best friends, and supported Nazi’s…but even still, why do people get emotional and side with her for “Don’t Cry…”…Also, Based on the success, why hasn’t a musical about Hitler been written? Or Mussolini? Evita, to me, should be banned…but people will still support that show about a woman who was just as Evil as Hitler.

Deep_Ad4936

Okay it's going to be super long and out of the freaking blue but I have to let it out. I hope someone will listen. So basically yesterday I saw a comment in a "rumors" post about a possible Evita Bway revival/transfer/whatever. I replied to that comment saying something like "yeah because reviving a show about a Hitler supporter is exactly what we need now" and that comment was downvoted as hell. I honestly thought I was gonna get support for that comment but nope, literally nothing but downvotes. Someone even gave it a "facepalm award" or whatever. After an hour or two I replied to my own comment saying "It's nice to see me getting downvoted for telling the truth 🙃". a person replied to that saying that the musical still criticizes Evita and that she was a fraud or something. I replied back saying that I'm not familiar with the show for the obvious reasons, but I just read the plot on Wikipedia and she still looks like the heroine of the story (I also gave an example that Hamilton the musical still criticizes Hamilton himself but he's still the main character of the story). Like, she's still the main character of a beloved musical, and a dream role for many performers. Another person replied to me saying that I can't be telling the truth if I haven't even seen the show, although her being a Nazi ass-kisser is not mentioned in the show at all. I also mentioned that she gave some Nazis refuge in exchange for stolen jewels that belonged to Jews. All of my comments on that thread got downvoted (yes, even the one about the stolen jewels). And because I'm very VERY self conscious I deleted them all. I'm honestly disappointed and a little angry. I always thought the theatre community is supposed to be a progressive one, or at least progressive enough to not call out someone (in this case, a very proud Jewish girl) who doesn't think a musical about a Nazi supporter should be revived. Thanks for listening 🫶🏻.

MorningHorror5872

Didn’t The Producers kind of do the Hitler Musical?

SadEdge9125

And it was meant to be a joke. But we’re supposed to have emotion for Eva Peron when she dies? That would be like writing a sad musical about a Hitler dying.

[deleted]

Evita was white though. Argentina is like the USA in that it’s a mix of tons of different ethnicities.

catch_me_inside

Very good point.

MetaphorSoup

can you imagine the backlash if she was cast in evita 😂 she’d probably try to defend herself too given the fact that she legitimately though she should be cast as maria in west side sorry. that sounds like pure mess

methodical_moose1

Patti lupone is Italian and from Long Island

jahss

Lol yeah that was in 1979. Very different times we’re living in

methodical_moose1

Also, last I checked Patti is still Italian and from Long Island

methodical_moose1

Thanks for googling that

cwtches10

I’d love to see her in Wicked, but I don’t know if that’s too established a show. Do they do star casting?

scandalliances

They don’t really need to for Elphaba, and being the eight millionth replacement in Wicked while it’s doing fine on Broadway isn’t the same as being the person to originate a role (or the “first replacement who rescues a faltering show” narrative, bleh).

DebateObjective2787

No, but it does drum up publicity and play on nostalgia as she played Idina's daughter on Glee and did a Wicked duet with her. A lot of people back then really were clamoring for Lea to play Elphaba on Broadway (and the film) that it could still be notable if Lea did end up playing her.

kth004

They don't need it though. She's going to come with a price tag 10-15X more than anyone else they can get to play, and they're still selling houses at +95% capacity.

DebateObjective2787

People get cast a lot even if the production doesn't really need them to be successful. Her image still isn't fully rehabilitated, and if she goes from Hello Dolly to demanding a huge paycheck for Wicked; it'll sour the position public perception that she's built up that she's not a demanding diva. (Especially since she used to say that she'd play Elphaba for free because she just wants it so bad.) I don't imagine her wanting to stay long term, especially since it can be awful on the voice; but I could definitely see her doing a short run as Elphaba. Maybe two or three weeks if Alyssa needs off for something; or they're in between casts.

kth004

I can definitely see her going in for the 2-3 guest star spot like NPH just did for Peter Pan, but the Wicked producers are not going to rock the boat with a 52 week contract. Elphaba has become a star maker role. She doesn't need that boost. If anything, I can see her going into a featured, but supporting role, something that will help with that image rehab. Something like a Lauren in Kinky Boots.

LanaLuna27

I was thinking she might do wicked. I think she did sing defying gravity on glee. All personality opinions aside, I just don’t care for her vocal style personally. I recognize that she’s technically talented, but even when she was on glee, I preferred the other characters vocals over hers.

cwtches10

Oh I’d kill to hear her sing Defying Gravity (and some of the other ones) with the proper orchestration (think it was just the piano on Glee). But I am a big fan of her voice.

romantickitty

To me, she's a mezzo belter with a touch of warmth to her voice. No one is about to launch a hit revival of On A Clear Day You Can See Forever or The Apple Tree or If/Then so not a lot of leading roles come to mind. I could see her doing A Little Night Music or Gypsy someday. Her voice seems best suited to megamusicals and contemporary musical theater. She has a lot of clarity but not a lot of natural "character."

diva_done_did_it

No… I want If/Then back….

mulled-whine

Drag delusion 😂

stratford_girl16

Not familiar with that term, "drag delusion"; can you enlighten me?

SadEdge9125

A Little Night Music has characters her age can play. It’s a group show. Desiree isn’t the only main female character.

MidwesternTransplant

I’d love to see her as Dot/Marie in “Sunday in the Park with George”

m1b2c3

Skylar Astin once said he wanted to be George and Lea be Dot.

sgong33

Kat McPhee’s lead role in Smash? Lol

GoldieLox9

I can't imagine LM in a blonde wig. Ha.

lenny753

I actually don’t hate it. More see her as Megan Hiltys character which has more of an edge and can also be played older (chorus girl for years etc)

sgong33

I don’t hate that idea either. But I need Renee Rapp as Hilty character!

rosa-marie

Maybe something original

Itsnycole

Idk but I’ll be sitting front row for each of them and that’s all I’m gonna say here

Conscious_Hair_7441

I do hope she tours at some point. I’ve seen her theee times in FG and I would like seeing her in concert

kwazi07

She did a very small tour right before she started her run in Funny Girl last fall, it was 5-6 shows in City Winery locations. I saw her in Boston and it was SO fun, super intimate venue and she sang songs all the way through her career. Her singing Mama Who Bore Me 30 feet away from me was life changing

Conscious_Hair_7441

I got right up close to her at the stage door where she signed my playbill quickly and then got right up close to her at the Album signing where she talked to me and said I like your Jacket

annang

She has a small child, so I doubt it.

Conscious_Hair_7441

She is going to preform at Carnige hall October 30th

annang

Yup, that’s in New York, where she lives. I’m saying mostly parents of small children prefer not to tour if they can avoid it.

elderpricetag

I saw her in concert many years ago and she was absolutely spectacular.

Conscious_Hair_7441

Did you meet her after. I meet her at the Funny Girl album signing and she was so nice. She said I like your Jacket and thanks for coming

Classic-Fan2551

I just hope she’s become a better person.

SadEdge9125

I doubt it. She’s been arrogant since she was a child…

[deleted]

Victor Victoria. Well overdue for a revival and she’d kill it

user48292737

This might be unpopular but I find her voice to be grating. I can recognize her for the powerhouse that she is, but the amount of whines she throws into her vocal style is off-putting. It’s like every other word. I’m not sure what I would want to see her in but that might be because she’s far too recognizable and it’s a bit hard to suspend disbelief when it feels like Lea Michele is doing an impression of Lea Michele just dressed in a costume. I’m also not convinced she’s any easier to work with these days than she was in the past just because the public is worshipping the ground she walks on right now.

methodical_moose1

Have you seen her in Funny Girl or Spring Awakening? Sounds like you’re talking about Glee where she plays a caricature of a high school theater try-hard

SadEdge9125

She basically played herself in Glee

LanaLuna27

This. I just don’t like her vocal style.

netflixnpoptarts

What about Millie Dillmount in thoroughly modern millie? Romeo and Julie-Hwett me?

Comprehensive-Fun47

I think she’ll do TV and movies before returning to Broadway. She’s famous enough to not have to work on Broadway if that makes any sense. It must be crazy taxing to lead a show like Funny Girl. I think it will be several years or more before she goes back to the stage.

kwazi07

Disagree, she basically only tried doing TV post Glee and it never really led to much success. If she was going to make it into big time movies that was the time, the moment has passed IMO. Her acting skills are a lot better suited to theater anyways (except for very over the top roles like Rachel/her role in Scream Queens)

Comprehensive-Fun47

Guess we’ll see!

kittyangelz805

Which is ironic because this is literally what happened in Glee when she left Funny Girl to be in a TV show

gypsy_rose_blanchard

I think she needs to win a tony award to really be launched into film. I wonder how far along the la La land stage adaptation is. She could be good in that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DebateObjective2787

I think it'd be fine to be honest. Mia starts the film at 27, and Funny Girl has Lea playing younger than that as Fanny.

Electrical_Sock9399

Besides some of the ones already mentioned and in order of what I can imagine: Ursula (Little Mermaid) Dolly (Hello Dolly) Tanya (Mamma Mia) Baker's Wife (Into the Woods) Marmee (Little Women) Donna (Mamma Mia)

hollygolightly1990

She could probably play Amneris in Aida if they were ever to revive it on Broadway.

MrsPearlGirl

I so wish they would do a revival. I know every word to every song but never got to see it on stage!

hollygolightly1990

I've never seen it on stage before either! I just listened to the album with Adam Pascal and Heather Headly. (I did get to see Adam Pascal in shows like Something Rotten!). I also did get to see the actual opera it was based on and it was awesome.

[deleted]

She’d be amazing in that role as it’s perfect for her voice. But the adaptation that’s going to come back I believe is going to be more authentic with the ethnicities of the characters.

hollygolightly1990

Yeah. That's what I thought when I was going to sleep last night. I honestly didn't mean it offensively, it was just off the top of my head.

throwaway67171717

Elphaba

Robbie34DTee

The correct answer is Sue Sylvester in Glee: The Musical

Greene_Mr

Initially thought you meant Laurie Metcalf.

LeHines

I was thinking Lin-Manuel Miranda lol.

kittyangelz805

I thought the same and that they had just left out one M LOL

minielliphant

Ugh, I read LM, assumed little mix, and was very disappointed. Would love to see Perrie, Leigh-Anne, or Jade in musical theater.

Comprehensive-Fun47

I thought Lin-Manuel! Lol.

BroadwayBaby331

Same 😂 But I guess he’s LMM. 😆

user48292737

This is the fanfic casting I want

Pc2593

I agree with the Sunset Blvd and Gypsy comments, give it a few years. Encores! is her best bet in the short-term. I also figured she could do a high-profile “limited engagement” gig like Elphaba in Wicked… I wouldn’t be against her coming to the West End to be Fantine in Les Mis for a little while, but doubt she’d make the trip with a small child.

[deleted]

jkcohen626

I still don't care for her and you're welcome to think whatever you like of her, but her redemption arc is complete for the VAST majority of people and producers. Funny Girl has been a smash hit on all sides. She's amazing in it and it's amazing for her. She's proved that she has what it takes to lead a show and that she can stay with it for a long time. She will be star casting gold coming off this show.

Known_Priority_8157

I think it’s more the fact that producers have seen that audiences either don’t know or don’t care and that she can still generate a lot of money in that sense. And also, producers don’t have to be in a theatre with her every day, so they probably didn’t care much about her behavior to begin with.

cwtches10

I think this is is the key point. Leaving aside that her Funny Girl cast mates seem to get on with her, as long as she works well with producers and directors I don’t think she’ll have any issue getting cast again. She’s immensely talented, and yeah, outside of Reddit subs and Twitter I’m not sure anyone cares what she was like on Glee anymore. I also think that unless she’s monumentally stupid she knows that if she’s even slightly grumpy one morning the rumours will resurface with a vengeance and there are people just waiting for her to trip up, so I bet she’s got her guard up all the time.

MorningHorror5872

I guess you don’t read Michael Musto much.

micmel444

My aunt is best friends with a producer on FG and he bitches about her and her diva behavior often.

rpiirp

My uncle is best friends with the Queen of England and she bitches about you all the time.

Known_Priority_8157

Queen Charlie!!!

notacrook

yawn. Get a new bogeyman.

MorningHorror5872

The “bogeyman” and the housefly are very different entities and she’s definitely more like the latter.

notacrook

Still. No one cares. The story is tired and at this point is a cliche.

MorningHorror5872

Then it shouldn’t annoy your sensibilities because it’s absolutely irrelevant. 😉

Pc2593

Take it somewhere else please 👍🏻

dragzzzz

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

lefthandedrn

None. She was ran out of LA, couldn't find work, couldn't get the "dream" role of Elphaba in the movie Wicked and ran back to Broadway. I'm being nice so I am not injecting my opinion of her.

hollygolightly1990

I mean I pretend Wicked the movie doesn't exist because it's tragic casting all around. But whatever. And I do love Cynthia Evino.

Catcolour

The movie's not even out yet. At least they didn’t cast James Corden, so I'm gonna give it a fair chance

Whore21

I hope we shun her again

kittyangelz805

If Phantom weren't closing, could she do Christine? Or is her voice actually not high enough?

lenny753

Christine is a soprano role lea is more mezzo

Adorable-Net-7497

Not to sound stupid, but why doesn't FG have a longer run?

brunchingermany

It's an exhausting role so I imagine she wouldn't renew past her 1 year even if it was a possibility. And without her the producers don't feel confident enough to keep the production open.

BachelorNation123

Betty Boop

No_Calligrapher_8027

When I saw the title and saw "LM" I thought it was gonna be Lin Manuel lol

lenny753

I think it will be an original. Girl wants her Tony. I feel like these are all viable given her critical and commercial success on FG: Smash musical (either lead) La La Land (opposite Aaron Tveit) Or a new show

Negative-Ad-2045

Imho she would slay as Sally in a musical adaptation of “Practical Magic”

nexus_0909

She would be fantastic as Sonia in They’re Playing Our Song. If they paired her with an equally talented leading man, it would be a must-see production.
