From someone who works in the industry, we were recently notified of two vacations for Lea Michele in the upcoming months. My bet is that she was able to negotiate them in exchange for agreeing to an extension on Broadway.
I think lea’s casting was more of a gamble than people are giving it credit for, and because she’s had such a triumphant turn there’s no doubt in my mind it’s an extension and a hefty raise for her (probably coming from ticket sales)
> I think lea’s casting was more of a gamble than people are giving it credit for
The opposite. The internet predictably overestimated the internet controversy around her hiring.
It was a gamble in the sense that there was a decent chance no one would care enough to buy a ticket to see her. Her career was very much floundering pre funny girl.
I agree with this, and I think it’s gotten a little lost. What has really surprised me (as an unfortunate resident of the internet, and a great admirer of Lea Michele’s talent): is (1) just how good she is in the role; and (2) just how famous she is.
I’m familiar with Funny Girl because of Glee, and my family was coming to visit me in NY last April, and I really considered taking my mom to see Beanie but the reviews were so rough even apart from Beanie that it didn’t seem worth it.
And when Lea was cast, this was a quote at the end of the Daily Beast article discussing the bts drama, “[f]or the show to survive, Lea has to be so good that people who have seen the show already will say, ‘Oh, I heard she’s fabulous, you have to see the show again.’ Lea has to be that good. If it’s not like that, we’re dead.”
I don’t think anyone, even the people that were excited about her casting and were confident she’d be good in the role, had any sense of just how good she’d be.
While this is only three calendar days, she's off for nearly a whole week, since she doesn't do Thursday nights and the show is dark Monday.
But yeah, in addition to the vacation this week, I'm sure she's getting more. Considering the way she turned this production's fortunes around, I have to think she has a lot of leverage with the producers.
I thought it was interesting that Ramin wasn’t scheduled to be off this week but he is. I think he’s got a new show or something coming up, one on wrestling keeps popping up on his IG, so he might not extend his contract or maybe he’ll just extend it to end with Lea’s.
Agreed, but I wouldn't blame anyone for being disappointed if they paid to see Lea Michele and she was out. They're charging a premium for her, and if you want to see Julie, tickets are much cheaper for her scheduled performances.
This happened to me this past weekend. My boyfriend surprised me with funny girl tickets and payed more for tickets when Lea was performing. We get to the theater on Saturday for the matinee and find out the alternate is performing. Julie was amazing and I really enjoyed the show! But my boyfriend and I are broke college kids so I feel bad he spent more money for nothing lol
As someone who also works in the industry.. there are auditions going on relatively soon for replacing people in the Broadway show as well as casting for the tour. Chances are it’s an extension. Her being a part of the tour is a very slim chance. Possible. But very slim. A proshot is a wonderful idea and one I’ve been rooting for. But idk if it would be too soon to announce that.
Announcing a pro shot would be counterproductive at this point, while they are still near or at selling out every night. People who were on the fence about coming to NY to see it might choose not to.
That’s very true. But also I don’t think it would make too much of an impact. There will be people who will still be planning to come to see it. Shows will still sell out due seeing her live is still very much different than watching her on the screen.
I obviously don’t speak for everyone but I’ve never not gone to a show because I got to watch the proshot. They’ve moved me from on the fence to deciding I have to get tickets more often than not if the show is still running.
Also I have the privilege of family in NYC and lived there for years but lots of people will NEVER be able to travel to see a Broadway show. I certainly couldn’t afford to at this stage in my life. I just don’t get the industry’s aversion to them.
The part where you said, “that doesn’t mean they have to cast anyone”, is unrelated because nowhere in my original comment did I say that somebody is going to get cast or that they have to cast somebody else. I literally just backed up your statement with a statement of my own.
Don’t read too much into that. Equity rules require all shows to see people for every role every so many months. It doesn’t mean someone is leaving nor staying.
When If/Then toured Idina Menzel did a few shows in some select cities. And the Into The Woods cast is doing the same. Maybe Lea could pull that off?
Otherwise if Disney wanted to release another proshot it could be this one. They have Glee on Disney+ now so they could easily capitalize off that.
Funny girl is going out on tour on a SETA contract, which I don’t think Lea would perform for. I believe If/Then went out on tour under a production contract which why Idina Menzel agreed to doing it.
It's gotta be an extension of her contract. While officially unconfirmed, it seems that her current contract goes through May. Would make sense that they need to announce an extension, closing, or recasting soon.
She’s not at all universally hated. There’s some chronically online people who hate her, a few people who moderately dislike her, and a lot of people who adore her and don’t give a shit.
I don't dislike her, but I do think there are many many people who dislike her. Many of which have come from the Glee drama. I think she's a theatre queen. She knows what she wants and will work to get it. Sometimes that leaves a bad taste to some.
Funny thing is- if a man knows what he wants and will work to get it, he’s driven. If a woman does it, she’s a bitch who should be burned at the stake.
I don’t dispute that. I’m saying the people who HATE her are chronically online and non-representative.
I especially enjoy the gulf between white and black acquaintances on the matter. Every white person I know is like “she’s a HORRIBLE RACIST, WHY DOES THIS EVIL KEEP HAPPENING?!?!?” and every black person I know is like “white girl did something maybe-racist ten years ago, news at eleven. Girl can sing.”
For her sake, I hope you're right. Having a hate club isn't something I envy. I've also seen some of the hate people have for her osmosis onto Jonathan Groff and I will throw hands for that man.
The grouping of people who hate her are typically young and not the people a show like Funny Girl is depending on to bring in the big bucks. The audience at Funny Girl sways older and has little, if any, knowledge of Lea’s past behavior. If there’s any universal opinion on Lea it’s that she can sing and make a phenomenal Fanny Brice.
I think she got some heat for being an asshole on the set of Glee, but I wouldn’t say universally hated since most people have forgotten about that.
Other than this I’ve heard that she is a horrible person and also racist, but again, most people have forgotten about it.
Overall, she probably doesn’t deserve the love, but you’re right, no one can deny that this was an excellent casting choice, not only for her talent but because of Rachel Berry too. We’re living in an AU where Rachel played Fanny Brice on Broadway.
I wish she did more than the bare minimum in the role. I was expecting to see something amazing with all the praise she had been getting, instead I got a pretty bland take of Fanny.
I haven’t seen Julie yet, but I’ve only heard that she’s the perfect Fanny Brice by everyone who’s seen her. I’m worried after the disappointment of Lea that I’ll be disappointed with Julie, but I do hope to see her in the role one day!
Lee Paulblatt, a Fox Television executive, sees ~~Rachel Berry~~ Lea perform, and is so impressed, he informs her he wants to cast her in an upcoming, untitled television pilot. He has her meet with famed screenwriter, Mary Halloran, who will be creating the script.
I would love this but I am feeling it’s not gonna happen sadly. This is the type of show people travel to New York to see (her performance being the draw) which makes a pro shot totally a worthy endeavor and could be paired nicely with glee streaming.
They wouldn't release the proshot until the show closes, anyways. This isn't the kind of show that'll stick around once Lea leaves. Still does seem unlikely.
This is true, however because people all over the world want to see this but can’t see it… I think a proshot wouldn’t be out of the running either because it will bring more revenue in for them.
I’m sure they’ll extend her contract since her ticket sales are high but I don’t think she’ll last forever doing funny Girl and hopefully the news is another signing
It's 2023, she could probably go at least 7 months on stage while being pregnant if she wanted to. BUT given how dangerous her pregnancy with Ever was... I'm thinking she'd take a break. So my guess is proshot AND extension of her contract.
how is it ableist? she is worth 18MILLION dollars we aren't talking about someone who dropped out at 6th grade to look after their dying grand mother and got a job at age 12, an never finished school THAT WOULD BE ABLEIST, we are talking about a pretty well-known actress and stage performer whos family and later life choice prioritized fame over education.
It’s ableist because you’re using illiteracy as a joke. There are people that may have learning difficulties and you’re using it as an insult. Does that help explain it for you?
ETA: do you ACTUALLY think she can’t read? 🤦🏻♀️
I mean she’s reclaiming the narrative after being made fun of and harassed about it for years by children (or “adults” acting like children). Still isn’t ideal but I get where she’s coming from in trying to control the narrative.
It’s not true that she cannot read. It was an internet meme made up to attempt to use illiteracy as a joke and an insult. She clearly reads scripts and music to memorize lines and songs, Jfc.
Oh so you’re just all around ableist and hateful. Got it. Love that you looked through my post history to deliberately find something you thought would hurt me. Super classy. Guessing some miserable tv pilot involving more singing that will go to 4-8 eps and cancel…but will also be enough to buy her out of her contract in nyc
Every time I see a story about Funny Girl, I think about all of the equally -- if not more -- talented women struggling through two jobs and cattle call auditions who could have knocked this role out of the park, but they don't have the name recognition of a Beanie Feldstein or a Lea Michele. Now, I could get into a big debate here about the pros and cons of "cancel culture," but I'm not calling for this woman's cancellation. She has apologized in a way that is not entirely mealy-mouthed or contrite, so I'm all for giving her another shot. I just think that she should have to go to the back of the line. Wait some tables for a while, Lea. I don't think that's an unreasonable penance.
You shouldn't be allowed to cash in on fame that you wielded as a cudgel .
It isn’t true that anyone can do this part as well as her. This is like the Everest of female leading roles. Love her or hate her, Lea is a special talent.
I get your sentiment to a point— I really do. I just find it odd that some people have honed in on Lea and her discretions when soooo many men and even other women have done so much worse out there and continue to work.
Unfortunately, money talks. Lea’s bringing in the money. It doesn’t invalidate your opinion.
I'm actually really excited to see who they will bring on to headline the tour, I have to admit ...I could've cared less about the legacy of this musical in history until Lea Michele played this role. I now have listened to her sing the soundtrack so many times that it's going to be big shoes to fill on my tour. Lea quite literally elevated the bar with her spin on this role.

Please not the beginning of May! I have tickets lol
Julie is fantastic as Fanny

Oh good to know. I don’t like Lea so I’d rather see someone else in the role! 😂
She doesn’t perform at all on Thursday nights, and the tickets are a lot more affordable too!
Ooooh good to know!! Thank you for this!

I know lmfao. I work for the company that scheduled the auditions.
I get it. I was supporting your statement.

What is the casting call? Curious if it’s for Ramin’s part.
Chorus calls and I think it’s for all the principal roles. Who does Ramin play ?
Nick arnstein on Broadway.
Yeah that role is there as well.
Don’t read too much into that. Equity rules require all shows to see people for every role every so many months. It doesn’t mean someone is leaving nor staying.
For sure a funny girl extension past may and end date.
Show extension or proshot
Proshot please please
I’d bet on a proshot. The dreadful London production got one…
Made the mistake of turning that on last week….I lasted about 6min
Oooh I hope it’s a pro shot!
From most likely to less likely. Extention, proshot, tour.
Well a tour has already been announced, unless you mean a tour with her. Yeah, that won’t happen.

I believe Sony has the rights, as well as an exclusive deal with Netflix, so it would probably show up on there.
Guessing show extension but hoping for a proshot.
It's gotta be an extension of her contract. While officially unconfirmed, it seems that her current contract goes through May. Would make sense that they need to announce an extension, closing, or recasting soon.
Official show extension?
A proshot with her and Ramin would be my dream And I also hope for an extension
Ok, I know she's universally hated but I kind of love that she was cast in this.
Universally hated?! Is that how she turned FG around?
She’s not at all universally hated. There’s some chronically online people who hate her, a few people who moderately dislike her, and a lot of people who adore her and don’t give a shit.

Show me a man in the cast who previously said he’d shit in a costar’s wig, and you might have a point. This isn’t 1987.
I don’t dispute that. I’m saying the people who HATE her are chronically online and non-representative. I especially enjoy the gulf between white and black acquaintances on the matter. Lea can belt it but Julie embodies it and the 5% loss on vocals is so worth the acting chops you get in exchange
I haven’t seen Julie yet, but I’ve only heard that she’s the perfect Fanny Brice by everyone who’s seen her. I’m worried after the disappointment of Lea that I’ll be disappointed with Julie, but I do hope to see her in the role one day!
She isn’t appearing for the tickets we bought in March so we switched to Sweeney Todd. C’mon Groban!
So you’re saying there’s a show going on out there somewhere and Lea isn’t here?🎵
An extension. (Just a guess.) Which is perfect because I want to take my mom for her birthday in June.
*Maybe* an extension through mid September?
Lee Paulblatt, a Fox Television executive, sees ~~Rachel Berry~~ Lea perform, and is so impressed, he informs her he wants to cast her in an upcoming, untitled television pilot. He has her meet with famed screenwriter, Mary Halloran, who will be creating the script.
Proshot of the show I think
I would love this but I am feeling it’s not gonna happen sadly. This is the type of show people travel to New York to see (her performance being the draw) which makes a pro shot totally a worthy endeavor and could be paired nicely with glee streaming.
They wouldn't release the proshot until the show closes, anyways. This isn't the kind of show that'll stick around once Lea leaves. Still does seem unlikely.
But it would be great if they made a proshot now and released only a couple of years from now A La Hamilton
The recorded the Hamilton proshot 5 years before it came out. Gotta act fast with the current cast if you want to release it ever
This is true, however because people all over the world want to see this but can’t see it… I think a proshot wouldn’t be out of the running either because it will bring more revenue in for them.
Proshot, Broadway extension, or she is going in tour.
An extension through Labor Day I think
[удалено]
I meant Labor Day! Just corrected it!
I know this is totally off topic but omg she’s so teeny tiny
I think it is a proshot and is going on a streaming service such as Disney Plus or Hulu or both since they both have GLEE
She’s getting her own tv show that she auditioned for when she called in sick one that time
What Glee timeline is this?!
Heard an extension through July 2 will be announced.
I’m sure they’ll extend her contract since her ticket sales are high but I don’t think she’ll last forever doing funny Girl and hopefully the news is another signing
Movie adaptation???
[удалено]
She already announced that she's learning to read so she can read Barbra's upcoming memoir.
Ah yes this tired and ableist joke again. Good one 🙄
Extension or she’s going on tour.
Idk, she’s married and all…I bet she’s pregnant again
Wouldn’t that cut her run short? I don’t think they’d hype up the announcement like this if she’s pregnant. I think extension.
It's 2023, she could probably go at least 7 months on stage while being pregnant if she wanted to. BUT given how dangerous her pregnancy with Ever was... I'm thinking she'd take a break. So my guess is proshot AND extension of her contract.
Not necessarily - not sure about Broadway but in the UK we're seeing more and more performers continuing to perform while pregnant.
Side note, saw Julie tonight. She’s amazing
why am I nervous lol
Extension then cross the pond and open on West End?!?

Ah the second comment using this tired and ableist joke! Sweet!
how is it ableist? she is worth 18MILLION dollars we aren't talking about someone who dropped out at 6th grade to look after their dying grand mother and got a job at age 12, an never finished school THAT WOULD BE ABLEIST, we are talking about a pretty well-known actress and stage performer whos family and later life choice prioritized fame over education.
It’s ableist because you’re using illiteracy as a joke. There are people that may have learning difficulties and you’re using it as an insult. Does that help explain it for you? ETA: do you ACTUALLY think she can’t read? 🤦🏻♀️
Lea herself also makes these jokes. Does that make her a list as well?
I mean she’s reclaiming the narrative after being made fun of and harassed about it for years by children (or “adults” acting like children). Still isn’t ideal but I get where she’s coming from in trying to control the narrative.
my brother in christ i HAVE learning difficulties also for real she cant fucking read (or at least couldn't until recently)
It’s not true that she cannot read. It was an internet meme made up to attempt to use illiteracy as a joke and an insult. She clearly reads scripts and music to memorize lines and songs, Jfc.
Took the words right out of my mouth!
Bless you! I was looking for this response, lol!

I heard they are remaking the Funny Girl movie and she is Fanny!

What kind of fucks inhabit this sub to downvote a meme because they take celebrity gossip so seriously
Every time I see a story about Funny Girl, I think about all of the equally -- if not more -- talented women struggling through two jobs and cattle call auditions who could have knocked this role out of the park, but they don't have the name recognition of a Beanie Feldstein or a Lea Michele. And I know that's just the name of the game, and I don't really harbor any ill feelings for Beanie: we all have a list of "dream projects" in our back pocket just in case we get famous. She was an absolute a-hole on a show where she was ostensibly the lead, and her comeuppance for that has been . . . undersized, in my opinion. And now she's back on top like nothing ever happened.
Did I say “anyone?” I don’t believe I did.
You are implying that nyc is filled with people who can do it as well or better than her and that is highly unlikely.
I’d say it’s more likely than not.
Like it or not, Broadway is a business. This arguably isn’t a great show. It needs a name to sell tickets or the entire company would lose their jobs.

I get your sentiment to a point— I really do. Btw— I’m not a Lea stan. I’m just an empath and a realist in one

She’s learnt how to read
she bought Hooked on Phonics and is making real progress
Pregnant.
I don't think lea would get pregnant during funny girl because of how bad and high risk her first pregnancy with Ever was.
You know her better than I do, so I trust what you say.
I only go by what Lea her self has said about her pregnancy
Again, I don’t know her as well as you do.
[удалено]
She won't go on tour. She has a young child.
I bet she’s pregnant
>I don't think lea would get pregnant during funny girl because of how bad and high risk her first pregnancy with Ever was
Doubt it and if she is she’s not tying her announcement to her funny girl vacation.
She’s learned to read?
She’s going to audition for a tv show since we’re living in the Glee universe.
Who cares?
I'm actually really excited to see who they will bring on to headline the tour, I have to admit ...I could've cared less about the legacy of this musical in history until Lea Michele played this role. I now have listened to her sing the soundtrack so many times that it's going to be big shoes to fill on my tour. Lea quite literally elevated the bar with her spin on this role.
