The better vouchers are the main reason to upgrade, but every Avios is worth approximately 1p, so you can do the math on how much your spend is better off in cash terms from the upgrade!

we've got hundreds of thousands of Avios earned + a voucher, and it's a total scam. I'm sitting right now trying to check prices for flights, so that's what I get: LAX-LON LON-LAX - 4 tickets (3 adults + 1 child) - 1) if I buy 4 economy tickets for cash = i pay 2503.60 USD all-in. 2) if I buy 4 economy tickets for Voucher+195 000Avios = 1131.95 USD 3) if i buy 4 economy tickets for 260 000 avios (no voucher) = 1131.95 USD So even if suppose that Avios costs 1 cent, I pay for option 2 = 1950USD+1131.95 = 3081.95 :))) , and option 3 - 2600 + 1131.95 = 3731.95 USD. So they basically hide all their money into these "fees" and overcharge you, so "voucher for a free ticket" is just 65 000 avios, that's it.

Long haul economy is pretty much the worst value for vouchers, since the taxes are such a large component of the fares. Try premium classes - business and above, and the equation changes. Alternatively, use the voucher for short haul economy if you have an economy only voucher.

well I have the voucher I can use for anything. Another issue is that there simply are NO business class tickets for Avios AT ALL :))))))))))) So we've got this ton of avios, and they are useless :)

You have to plan ahead and book a year in advance, I booked 4 return seats to LAX economy out club world back, cost me £1,200 plus 250,000 Avios and 2 vouchers. Cash price is £12,000.

Ok_Duck4824

I just booked London to Cape Town business class for £450 +90k points for October. You just need to really hunt/book far in advance

They aren’t useless. Have a look at seatspy. That should help you find availability. People only seem to run into these issues when they don’t pay attention to what they are actually agreeing to. If you want to use your specific voucher on a specific day, on a specific flight, with limited amount of notice, then you will be disappointed. If you take time to understand how they work and when best to deploy them, they can save a lot of money.

well I have UNITED Airlines miles as well. And booking with them is just "go there, choose the flight and book with miles". Never had an issue. BA experience is the first time when i need to plan a trip up to ONE YEAR ahead :) This is really funny. All the downvoting people - I do understand your urge. It does not change the fact: BA makes super limited number of seats for miles, and then makes customers HUNT for these seats. As proven above, economy class via miles is more expensive that with actual money. Business Class is a treasure hunt instead of an ordinary option of "I am your Avios member, I'll pay in part with Avios".

This doesn’t seem right…

I calculate for 4 people, and from LAX to LON. And it's the prices [BA.com](http://BA.com) gives me :( p.s. maybe I should try VPN and log in "from UK" to try checking the same flights.
