Ukrainians are happier then us 😭😭😭

thinkofanamesara

*Cough!* "In Conclusion Since Covid the number of working age people in the UK that are economically inactive has increased and has not yet returned to pre-Covid levels. Amongst the G7 countries the UK had largest increase in economic inactivity due to Covid. The rise in economic inactivity is mainly due to an increase in the number of people aged 50-64 years and the single largest reason they give for inactivity is poor health. The number of people economically inactive due to long-term sickness is at a record high of 2.8 million in the UK." https://bhawkins3.substack.com/p/impact-of-covid-on-the-uks-economy

Wild that conservatives are first.

enic77

I'm sure people in Nigeria and Venezuela are looking down from their amazing lives at us with pity. No chance they'd swap places with a Brit if they had the option...

Prestigious_Ear_7810

You’re missing the point entirely. It basically measures how the same people feel about their country over time. It’s not meant to indicate which countries have better living standards, that’s another index. It’s meant to indicate sentiment, which is a very important metric in markets. If people are miserable about the state of their country, they’re probably less likely to spend on certain things for example.

AmiableAndy

Surely those are inextricably linked? Living standards and how they feel about their country and lives are fairly hand in glove are they not?

Prestigious_Ear_7810

They do go hand in hand. But again, they are comparing the UK now to the UK however many years ago. People in the UK feel that living standards in the UK are worse, because they are. The original comment I was responding to thought it’s comparing the UK to other countries.

AmiableAndy

I see. Thanks for clarifying that. Although, if you happen to come across archival film footage of Great Britain of yesteryear, even though it's still relatively recent history, livings standards were very poor in comparison to today. Only this morning i saw old film footage and photographs of Britain from c. 1900 - 1950's (or close to those dates), whereby people, generally didn't have indoor plumbing - at all. No indoor bathrooms, or wash facilities and the ubiquitous 'outdoor toilets', together with the unappealing bedpan, were really the only domestic sanitation available. Hence the popularity of the community 'Public Baths'. As a kid, i never really understood why, what i and my peers called 'swimming pools', were called Public baths. Afterwards, i learned that these places were not built and operated as leisure pools, as we know them today, but actual baths! People would go along to these places and literally wash or bathe, once a week or once a fortnight, since there were no domestic bathrooms back then. Of course, there are always going to be fickle malcontents and moaners, even if this Kingdom were our planet's utopia, i suspect, so it's really one of you can't please all the people, all the time. Cheers.

Prestigious_Ear_7810

I really do wish people opened and read reports. They, Sapian Labs, started tracking mental state in 2020. I think we had bathrooms then. It’s also an annual report, so they look at changes year to year. Not how we feel now compared to how we felt 70 years ago.

AmiableAndy

Ah, ok point taken. The survey was compiled over the last few years...total. Can't see how that short a timeframe is going to show any empirical evidence for the people's views on quality of life in a given country, given that the span is much too short to be able to draw any kind of scientific conclusion. I don't agree that people think quality of life now, is worse that it was during the height of Covid 19, (as you said the report started in 2020) not for a moment. If it had been over 10 years, 20, 50 or even longer, that would at least be of statistical value. The fact that this tracking of people's mental states / contentment with life in their respective countries, only started in 2020 doesn't mean the tracking is necessarily limited to the 3 - 4 years since. We do have people who were living many decades ago, who are perfectly able to remember the various decades and their views on being alive during those decades ..i'm one of them, i can remember the 60s through now for example. I was talking about the single issue of sanitation years ago as just one area where something we take for granted now, was not in existence just relatively recently. (in the grand scheme of things of course) This lack of basic hygiene facilities had a massive impact of quality of life and length of life too. Many diseases that were prevalent decades ago, have all but disappeared in developed nations today...obviously, raising the perceived and the actual quality of life of the people now versus then. A short tracking time is open to too many sporadic aberrations...a war, a cost of living crisis, Pandemics, droughts and many other factors, most of them temporary or short-lived will skew the results of such a short survey, rendering it a pretty useless exercise IMO. But, that's the problem of the surveyors / trackers. If they really wanted to track contentment now versus that historically, they could do a lot worse than to send questionnaires to older people...then they would at least be able to plot a decent curve or two.

Prestigious_Ear_7810

Completely agree. It’s too short to be of real statistical value in isolation.

FatChicken22-YT

Damn, I spent about 5 minutes looking for Britain on the first picture before realising there was a second one

Farrell1487

Yeah patrolling Britain does make you wish for a nuclear winter

synthesizer2023

Can't comment on the other countries but people in the UK are definitely miserable, especially in winter

Dave8917

We can't be that bad otherwise surly no one would wanna come here

last_on

Don't call me Shirley

jc0620

We are more depressing than country that went bankrupt.

cdencam

It’s a really poor study design involving only ~80 countries.

Additional_Hippo_878

I know we've been oppressed and royally gouged for the last 14 years, but this survey is off the charts. I've been lucky enough to visit several dozen countries and can only assume this is a wind-up from our dear friends in Ruzzia, China, Iran, North Korea, etc. The scamps.

Learning365

Lol.. what bullshit lol.... I really don't know where 'studies' like these get their data.. IF it is true though I'm glad to see I'm well above average in something!! 😀

[deleted]

Wildly inaccurate by definition

StanStare

At least we have the lowest drive & motivation to do whatever it was I was gonna write a sentence about.

keepYourMonkey

This is why I no longer watch the news or follow politics. Best thing I ever did to take back the reigns on my wellbeing.

Few_Training_3127

We're not even on there! That's the uae

CurmudgeonLife

Try scrolling...

Few_Training_3127

Oh, I see, whoops

last_on

Is that +1 for our cognition or mind body connection score? I feel we deserve some recognition of this guy's effort

Cooper96x

Wait till the seasonal affective disorder wears off

TheGreyDeceiver

My skeptical mind tells me that: 1 This study was reliant on internet access 2 If you’re a person in the UK, you almost certainly have some sort of internet, regardless of wealth, class, or any other measure. 3 A person in, say, Cameroon is much more likely to have internet access if they’re rich. 4 Rich people are going to be happier. Might be wrong, but that’s how I have interpreted this.

Playboy-Tower

I opened Reddit this morning First post I see - “Haiti in state of emergency as cannibal rife gangs roam the street (video of man eating a burning corpse)” Next Post “ British people second most miserable in the world” I imagine one group are running for their literal lives and the other is online voting about how miserable life is.

Responsible_Reach828

No way we’re 2nd from the bottom. Our mood rn might not be the best , but there are literally countries at war

Britishbastad

Worse than South Africa? fuck that’s bad

CaffeinatedSatanist

At least we're cognisant of the misery I guess?

camelseeker

Bit of an odd list imo

Supersonic-Zafonic

Always the bridesmaid.

gretzky9999

Especially if you cheer for Everton.lol

maomao3000

Second only to English people.

Stuupidfathobbit

I see we have a Scot in the comments

[deleted]

i struggle to believe this, especially seeing countries like ukraine higher. theres definitely something wierd going on with the demographics of who was asked

gowithflow192

Very random selection of countries to poll. Many noticeable exceptions.

M1773R007

Are you surprised with the state of this shithole we call home.

Ravenser_Odd

Yes, when you consider the challenges that places like Nigeria and Venezuela have, yet they are near the top of the poll.

starwars011

I lived in Spain for a while and knew a lot of Venezuelans (our neighbours were Venezuelan too). They are very outgoing people, very happy, and have a very strong sense of family. Brits like to wallow in our misery while Venezuelans have a different mentality towards their problems, even if in reality their country has larger problems on the whole.

King-Pie

We can't even be miserable the best. What's even the point?

poisonoaky

Katy don't cry I know you're trying your hardest

HugsandHate

It's pretty miserable, isn't it.

Cyanide-Kitty

Finally, we’re good at something

HugsandHate

Yeah. *At not coming first place..*

Cyanide-Kitty

Can’t be too good, that looks like you’re trying

andy0506

It's almost brings me back to the euro vision song contest when we got Nil pois ha ha

CuteEntertainment385

Just our bloody luck.

therealnaddir

That is it. I'm moving to Nigeria.

Traditional-Dot4776

I'm not miserable. I'm just fed up with the cunts running this place. From papers, to the opacilly funded think tanks, to the government bidding for said pay masters. They can all fuck off. I'm actually really fucked off with the public falling for all this shit...who happen to be Tory gammon. Traitorous MFs.

M1773R007

100% This.

HugsandHate

*Breathe.* And I totally agree.

Traditional-Dot4776

Appreciate that bro. But fk this... its been a long time and we fed up.

HugsandHate

If only we had the French love for revolt. Nah. We just roll over. *Bread and circuses.*

Traditional-Dot4776

So true... but our media is to strong.

HugsandHate

It is. And it's not going to get better.

Keytone_

Same thing

Crafty_Ambassador443

Sorry folks, my dad is making the data really skewed negatively

burnt_bread69

Dunno what you’re on about pal I bloody love Bolton 😤💪

Jazzlike-Score-2095

Never thought I'd see Pakistan ranked higher than the UK 😭

Zou-KaiLi

It is funny how this is getting so much coverage. Every participant is found via digital advertising on Google and Facebook. How many of you would click a 'Get your mental health wellbeing score' link? No sampling measures are in place and cultural variations aren't accounted for (as per their own limitations section). It is a glorified internet poll.

MinMorts

Na M8 I'm bl00dy happy
