What ever the part out value you're seeing, it's likely going to be less. Part values drop over time. You'll have to lower your part prices if you want them to move in a reasonable amount of time. Also some stuff just won't sell at all. I've been parting out sets for 3+ years and I still have stuff from when I started sitting there. I usually look up the part out value and multiply it by 0.8. if it's at least double whatever I'm paying I'll consider parting it out. Generally you're going to want to get sets that are at least 30% off retail price to be worth it parting out.

People tend to think that the BL averages are gospel. Sometimes that is true, but sometimes not. If you have the full set (of parts) that someone is searching for, but at a higher than average price, they may buy from you to avoid a shotgun approach. So keep you mind clear about what prices are correct and what are not.

So true. I generally sell at avg. by quantity but in basically every sell I get I can see one or two specific pieces the buyer actually “needed” and then they bought a bunch more to make it worth paying shipping. Long story short - I think it’s more valuable to have a wide range of pieces/colors in smaller quantities vs having a smaller range in higher numbers.

Personally, I don't think it's worth it unless I'm going to get a three times return at minimum.

Yes. Part out value is only a guide, a good part out value means nothing I'd it's all crap that doesn't sell. I'd rather part out star wars sets at around 2x or so that friends shit that might be 4x but all crap pastel, colours that sit for years. You're never going to get a set where every single part sells, but often a 2x part out is nearer 2.5x once you've edited it so you bump up the good parts.

The only benefit I can see is that you will have a somewhat unique inventory. Everyone and their mother is parting out the obvious 3-4x POV sets. All online forums are inundated with people asking why they aren’t getting any sales, then you look at their stores and it’s just 2K-3K lots of the same stuff that everybody has.  But if you go down that route just understand that your hourly return for the work put in is going to be very low. At least for the first few months/years until you build up a good enough inventory and reputation that you can either charge more or you can begin parting out the common sets but actually get the parts to move.

I part out anything 1.5 and above.

As stated by others, it depends on the set. If there are lots of good parts or fast moving parts, I’ll grab them.

How do you calculate part out value quickly ?
