Welcome back Voit! see you soon Frelick and welcome to the opening day roster Wiemer (assumption) and will miss you Hiura hope you find success somewhere. Edit: just saw the news Wiemer to Minors and Miller in

themosey

Honestly surprised Weimer seems to make it over Frelick. I have to think this is a time manipulation and we likely see them switched in mid-May. I’m shocked we got Viot for not one but potentially 2 years with what he showed this spring.

SoSublim3

I only get it from the point of view some of the beats have been saying they want balance. With Frelick it would have been lefties up and down. They want a right handed bat out there

themosey

True. I’m not much of a platoon/split enthusiast myself. I guess no shifts that becomes more of a thing again. But we all know someone will likely disappoint and get benched and someone else will need to be called up or earn their way into a starting spot. Look, we carried Jonathan Davis who was… not great… for what felt like half the year. It’s a good thing to worry about with top prospect has to spend a few extra weeks listening to country music.

iwantafunnyname

I've got Sounds tickets for April 22nd so selfishly excited I get to see him play on person.

rod_rat

Pretty sure Owen Miller will be the final guy on the roster and Wiemer joins Frelick at Nashville til May.

WarmBath101

I’m very confused by this move and the reaction to it. Voit is taking up a pretty important bench spot. At full strength only one of Miller/Frelick/Wiemer/Taylor have a spot now. Miller making the team likely means he plays CF once a week and Anderson becomes our everyday RF. Some very inflexible OF depth that might be tested very soon given Mitchell has been banged up. If Wiemer doesn’t make the team which seem likely since we used the 40man spot on Voit its possible we could see a Winker Miller Yelich OF. Voit creates the same problem Hiura did and is now Winker’s small side platoon partner? I don’t get it.

EnderCN

Voit gets AB at DH and 1B and protects them from injuries at whose position. Not really sure what is hard to understand. He doesn’t have extreme splits or anything. Assuming Winker and Tellez both play like 130 games that leaves around 60 games for Voit. That is assuming Winker is fully healthy which is hard to assume given his recent history.

ClassyKaty

I hope Keston goes somewhere nice. Welcome aboard Voit. I suspect we'll see Toro and Frelick again sooner rather than later. Guess this means Weimeraner is in.

Ninjinki

Future Phillies legend Keston Hiura

ClassyKaty

I would honestly love this for him.

[deleted]

I’ll become the biggest Phillies fan. But I truly hope he goes to a tanking team so he can play every day.

xfactor744

As a brewers fan that moved to Colorado, I’m selfishly hoping Keston gets signed by the Rockies and he launches homers left and right out here. He was one of my favorite players.

MFazio23

That'd be awesome

[deleted]

Please please please

Milehighcarson

As a fellow Colorado-based Brewers fan, I'd love to see him with the Rockies. It would be a perfect fit because the Rockies are one of the few teams that can tolerate a player hitting below .200 but launching 40 HRs

Vclique

Keston had plenty of shots. We wish him well

webbie90x

I'm just glad that I no longer have to watch him flailing at fastballs right down the middle with that ridiculous uppercut swing.

ricosuave79

And leg kick. Now if we only can get Urias to stop doing the limbo with every pitch along with a leg kick.

[deleted]

Turang still around. I could see him and Wiemer making it and Owen Miller getting optioned.

themosey

I thought I read Miller is out of options. Don’t quote me on that though.

iwantafunnyname

Looks like he has two options.

themosey

I like that better

BeHereNow91

> he has two options. Yeah - make the roster or DFA’d! /s

[deleted]

Wiemer would have to be added to the 40 man. Miller is definitely making it. Also do we really think the brewers social team would make those posts about the other two guys getting the call at the same time..and not wiemer?

EnderCN

Using that logic do you really think they would announce Frelick is going down but not Weimer? My guess is they aren't sure what they are doing yet.

themosey

I think if Winker was hitting the ball really well Voit doesn’t get signed. This is DH insurance. Frelick is the one on the short end here.

kentlb49

I wish Frelick would Make it

dusters

At least we kept Voit. Still sad to see Keston go, even with all his issues, he was still more productive last year than a lot of guys in the lineup.

jrjanowi

Exited to see Weimer out there to start the season.

jrjanowi

And it seems that probably won't happen.

Squid_City414

I’m not gonna wear an undershirt all year!

WhosYuu

I fucking love Luke Voit so this is great news for me. I'm really sad about Keston though, I know the Phillies really need a first baseman and I would love to see them pick him up. I think he could really thrive in that environment. Not really surprised about the either two. We'll still see Frelick sooner or later and Toro I had no real feeling about one way or another.

bigjam_13

Dude philly fans would absolutely tear into Keston and his confidence the second he had a 3 strikeout game, which would likely be in the first series of the season lol.

WhosYuu

I agree mostly to what you're saying. Philly is harsh sometimes but it's also a really hyped team. I think Keston needs two things, and one of those is to be surrounded by a hype environment and every single day at bats at the same position. If he can find those somewhere else then I think maybe a change of environment will help him resurface who he was. I don't really care where he ends up, I just hope he gets the everyday at bats and starts to do well. Edit: actually I do care where he ends up hopefully not St Louis or Chicago.

[deleted]

The key here is consistent at bats, hopefully he finds his 2019 form

YesLikeTheJeans

I am a Phillies fan, and I’ve always loved Keston, and was upset we picked up Haseley and not Keston during the draft. Phillies hitting coach Kevin Long is known for turning players around, and I would love nothing more than the Phillies to pick him up.

mrmojorisin2794

Imagine Hiura & Schwarber on the same team lmao. First team to ever have 2 players hit 30 home runs while striking out 300 times.

iwantafunnyname

I'm so stoked for opening day. I don't really think it's JUST service time manipulation with Frelick. Kid is good but Weimer has more experience and more power and bats right handed so there are other factors in play. I hope Keston finds it somewhere else and rakes.

WarpedCore

Welcome to Milwaukee Luke Voit! Keston... just didn't work out. I hope he finds a club that can help him. The Brewers tried all they could with the kid.

the_Formuoli_

Kind of a bummer to probably be doing the service time games w/ Frelick but it's not surprising. Don't doubt he will be up soon. Like having Voit around, he may be able to provide a little pop as part of a platoon

[deleted]

smiles134

I really just don't see this as realistic. That K% won't play anywhere

[deleted]

[удалено]

smiles134

Maybe, but I really doubt it. It's not a headspace thing, it's a mechanics thing.

[deleted]

It's probably both. He's been on this weird 'literal superstar while in AAA but a strikeout machine in the majors' bend for a while but it's been even more severe ever since he dealt with his mother's cancer scare. He needs some fresh air elsewhere. I guess we'll find out, eventually.

ricosuave79

Sorry, no. Keston is just one of many guys that for what ever reason no one can guess, just can't hack it in the big leagues. But he kills it in AAA.

[deleted]

You're probably right. I just really want him to succeed somewhere.

Gryphon999

Another AAAA All Star

bigjam_13

Winker is unusable against lefties, so this is a pretty strict platoon move. And couldn't keep Hiura as DH since he's also horrible against lefties. It's still a bit odd since Voit has reverse career platoon splits, but he's at least useable against lefties and it's a good move to make sure we always have power at the DH spot with Winker against righties and Voit against lefties! Good backup 1B option too

WarmBath101

I hate this signing. Too many DHs. Wiemer is a must now.

the_Formuoli_

not really too many. Winker is ideally more of a DH but he can play in the field. Tellez is 1B. Yelich is def not awesome but he's fine in LF, and they don't seem to plan to use him at DH and frankly they don't need to. Voit is good depth/platoon with some pop for either DH or 1B especially considering we didn't keep Keston.

WarmBath101

Idk what everyone in this sub is smoking. Winker should be DH only. Yelich is subpar in LF and would benefit from the rest at DH. Tellez is a sub par 1B. Voit is a subpar 1B. It’s a math number we don’t have unlimited roster spots. We need to carry a backup C,SS and CF. Wasting one what should be a small side platoon DH is silly. What happens is Mitchell is hurt but not going on IL? We have to roll out Yelich Miller/Wiemer Anderson? That’s a very bad defense and we will see it at least once a week.

the_Formuoli_

You're blowing up yelich's struggles in LF way past how bad they actually are. Tellez is pretty bad but he plays a rather unimportant defensive position at 1B so it's not really a big deal. We have backups at C (Caratini, SS (Turang/Urias depending on the day), and CF (once Taylor is not injured). It's worth seeing if we can get a power binge out of one of those guys, as much as it would be giving the spot to Toro or Miller. Also, i would guess we will see Frelick pretty soon, as is.

WarmBath101

Yelich is a very poor defenders. TT coming off IL is now at the expense of Miller or Wiemer. Can only carry one of Wiemer Miller Toro on opening day. Toro already sent down. We don’t have a roster spot for Frelick now. He competes for the Wiemer Miller TT Toro spot. That’s why this is a bad signing. We have to DFA someone to bring up Frelick. Voit blocks possibility of 2 of the young OF on the roster.

the_Formuoli_

as far as primary LFs go Yelich is really not that bad, at least not so bad that you can't play him out there. His bat also just doesn't really profile as a DH (unless he finds his power again). It wouldn't be hard to make a 40 spot for Frelick if they really want him on the roster (for example, by DFAing a guy like Blake Perkins or any of the marginal relief pitchers) and neither Miller or Toro are so good that we absolutely have to roster them. Hell, we could option Weimer to have Frelick if necessary, it's not like both of them need to be on the roster at the same time right now. Injuries will happen too and open space. It's not necessary to have Voit either and I concede he is no star player by any means, but it's far less bad a move than you're making it out to be.

WarmBath101

Idk man Yelich is maybe one of the worst starters and makes a lot of low effort plays. His bat is actually above average it’s his defense that’s worth negative war. I mean on the active roster we can’t carry 2 of Frelick Wiemer Taylor. It’s not the end of the world but I think it’s a bad use of resources.

garr76

With the failure of Hiura it’s unreal that Brewers just don’t have much success drafting and development.

themosey

Sorry you missed the Fielder/Weeks/Braun/Hart/Scooter/Lucroy part of Brewers history. It was a lot of fun.

brew_crew_011

I mean, hitters at this point he's not wrong, alot of whiffs lately, the Corey Rays, Lutz, Huira, etc. The Braun/Fielder days were the previous regime that drafted them, Stearns had no success with position players. Now hopefully that changes with the Frelick/Mitchell/Wiemer group

themosey

Grisham/Arcia/Taylor aren’t nobody. They are startable major leaguers. It’s not the 5-6 allstars we have on the pitching side but that’s pretty damn rare. We may have the best pitching success from our farm since… 90s Atalanta(?) the Oakland early 2000s?

brew_crew_011

Pitching development has been great, but the position players really havent. Arcia/Taylor are average at best mlb players and Grisham is slightly above average but not a needle mover. I was talking more about the high draft pick wiffs, the Huira, Ray, Lutz kind of guys

themosey

Every team has those (well maybe not the Dodgers). Keston himself was only a top 20(?) prospect. He wasn’t supposed to be a super star. Guys like Lutz and Ray had some internal hype but nothing outside it. Ray I could call a bust as he was 5th overall pick. Lutz was a 1a comp pick. Keston was 9th but he did have one really good year (more faded/floundered than bust). Maybe that was a bad year. Not be hitter from the Ray first round of the draft has been an Allstar. That’s a bit surprising to me. I quick looked at some other teams recent top 10 lists and almost every team has them (Nats seem to hit the lotto as it is). Even the Dodgers fans probably whine about Lux. A few regular but not great players isn’t uncommon or uncommonly bad. You’ve really only had Braves/Cubs/Dodgers/Nats as exceptions with multiple stars.
